Abstract

Optical conductivity [$\sigma(\omega)$] of YbCu$_2$Ge$_2$ has been measured at external pressures ($P$) to 20 GPa, to study the $P$ evolution of $f$ electron hybridized states. At $P$=0, $\sigma(\omega)$ shows a marked mid-infrared (mIR) peak at 0.37 eV, which is due to optical excitations from $f^{14}$ (Yb$^{2+}$) state located below the Fermi level. With increasing $P$, the mIR peak shows significant shifts to lower energy, reaching 0.18 eV at $P$=20 GPa. This result indicates that the $f^{14}$ energy level increases toward the Fermi level with $P$. Such a shift of the $f$ electron level with $P$ has been expected from theoretical considerations, but had never been demonstrated by spectroscopic experiment under high $P$. Abstract

Spin-transfer-torque, a transfer of angular momentum between the electron spin and the local magnetic moments, is a promising and key mechanism to control ferromagnetic materials in modern spintronic devices . However, much less attention has been paid to the same effect in antiferromagnets. For the sake of investigating how the spin current interacts with the magnetic moments in antiferromagnets, we perform spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements on Co20Fe60B20 4nm/Ir25Mn75 tIrMn nm/Pt 4 nm multilayers under a spin Hall effect of Pt. The effective magnetic damping in Co20Fe60B20 is modified by the spin current injected from the Pt layer via the IrMn layer. The results indicate that the spin current interacts with IrMn magnetic moments and exerts the anti-damping torque on the magnetic moments of Co20Fe60B20 through the IrMn. It is also found that the reduction of the exchange bias in the IrMn/Pt interface degrades the anti-damping torque exerted on the Co20Fe60B20 layer, suggesting the transmission of the spin torque becomes less efficient as the interface exchange coupling degrades. Our work infers that the magnetic moments in IrMn can be manipulated by spin torque similarly to the one in a ferromagnetic layer.

Abstract

We evaluate the exposure during nadir observations with JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. Designed as a mission to explore the extreme energy Universe from space, JEM-EUSO will monitor the Earth's nighttime atmosphere to record the ultraviolet light from tracks generated by extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In the present work, we discuss the particularities of space-based observation and we compute the annual exposure in nadir observation. The results are based on studies of the expected trigger aperture and observational duty cycle, as well as, on the investigations of the effects of clouds and different types of background light. We show that the annual exposure is about one order of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating ground-based observatories., Comment: published in Astroparticle Physics by the JEM-EUSO Collaboration

Each prefilled syringe of OVD was stored at room temperature for 0, 15, 30, 60, or 120 mins after a small amount of viscoelastic agent was discharged from the needle. The extrusion force values (kgf) of these OVDs when reused after storage were measured with a texture analyzer. Moreover, 10 healthy adults (5 men and 5 women) used a pinch sensor to measure the extrusion force values for the HA/CS combination without D-sorbitol which was stored in the above manner, and used a 4-step scale to score the usability of OVD.Results: For the HA/CS combination without D-sorbitol, the extrusion force value was increased from its initial value (storage duration, 0 min) as storage duration increased. However, for the HA/CS combination containing 0.5% or 1.0% D-sorbitol, this value remained almost unchanged over time. Likewise, the pinch sensor-determined extrusion force values of HA/CS combination without D-sorbitol increased, depending on storage duration.Conclusion: The addition of D-sorbitol to viscoelastic agent may suppress the needle clogging that occurs with OVD storage, and may improve the usability of OVDs during surgery.Keywords: ophthalmic viscosurgical device, extrusion force, cataract surgery, vitreous surgery

Abstract

Two-fluid flowing equilibrium configurations of a helicity-driven spherical torus (HD-ST) are numerically determined by using the combination of the finite difference and the boundary element methods. It is found from the numerical results that electron fluids near the central conductor are tied to an external toroidal field and ion fluids are not. 29. Eutectic Al2O3-GdAlO3 composite consolidated by combined rapid quenching and spark plasma sintering technique

Abstract

A mixture of Al2O3 and GdAlO3 was melted and rapid quenched to produce an amorphous film. Dense eutectic composites were consolidated from ground amorphous powder using both conventional and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Conventional sintering at temperatures above 1600degreesC for 24 h was required for complete sintering. However, using SPS complete sintering could be obtained at temperatures between 1300 and 1500degreesC with no soaking. The SPS technique could consolidate ultrafine eutectic structure from rapid quenched amorphous material, whilst conventional sintering was not successful owing to grain growth. A combination of rapid quenching and SPS resulted in an ultrafine eutectic Al2O3-GdAlO3 structure.
