Oak lace bug (Corythucha arcuata) has caused increasing damage throughout Europe since its appearance in 2000. In Hungary, it has become a dangerous pest of Quercus species in recent years. They frequently appear on ornamental and fruit trees, either, but this type of damage is not significant. Castanea species are known as their common host plants in their native area, but in Europe, it was detected only in Bulgaria. In this paper, we provide the first record of oak lace bug on sweet chestnut (C. sativa) in Hungary, which represents only the second European data on Castanea species. The pest was found in Debrecen, East Hungary.

Traps baited with the synthetic pheromone of Anarsia lineatella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) frequently captured also Euxoa tritici L. males (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in field tests in Hungary. As (E)‐monounsaturated compounds are uncommon among sex attractants or pheromone components of Noctuidae, it was hypothesized that the Euxoa catches may have been due to impurities of the (Z) isomer in synthetic (E)‐5‐decenyl acetate, which is the major component in the pheromone lure of A. lineatella. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)‐5‐decenyl acetate captured large numbers of E. tritici, and the compound showed a clear dose–response effect. Reanalysis of the synthetic batch of (E)‐5‐decenyl acetate used in preparation of the A. lineatella lure showed the presence of 10% of the (Z) isomer. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)‐5‐decenyl acetate can be used in the future for detection and monitoring purposes of E. tritici, a widely distributed pest of cereals and other field crops. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the most important invasive noctuid pests. Its appearance and rapid spread can be monitored with sex pheromone traps, but the catches can be confused by catches of non‐target similar species. Here we present non‐target catches of commercial pheromone traps of S. frugiperda in the Carpathian basin, which is a potential area of the pest. Sizable catches of Cucullia umbratica (L.), Agrotis bigramma (Esper), and Allophyes oxyacanthae (L.), common noctuids in East‐Central Europe, were recorded in numerous sampling sites. Although they can be distinguished from the target species by their different morphology, it is necessary to draw the attention of agricultural experts to their possible presence in the traps to avoid misleading conclusions.
