Abstract

Dissolution testing is part of the target product quality that is essential in approving new products in the pharmaceutical industry. The prediction of the dissolution profile based on spectroscopic data is an alternative to the current destructive and time-consuming method. Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopies are two fast and complementary methods that provide information on the tablets' physical and chemical properties and can help predict their dissolution profiles. This work aims to compare the information collected by these spectroscopy methods to support the decision of which measurements should be used so that the accuracy requirement of the industry is met. Artificial neural network models were created, in which the spectroscopy data and the measured compression curves were used as an input individually and in different combinations in order to estimate the dissolution profiles. Results showed that using only the NIR transmission method along with the compression force data or the Raman and NIR reflection methods, the dissolution profile was estimated within the acceptance limits of the f2 similarity factor. Abstract

Drying is broadly used to enhance the stability of thermosensitive biologics (for example proteins, probiotics) despite the risk of inadequate product quality after the drying process. Continuous fluidized bed drying is an attractive technology for these active pharmaceutical ingredients owing to the short mean residence time at elevated temperatures, compared to batch-type drying technologies and the possibility to closely monitor and precisely control the process. In this work, an integrated continuous granulation – drying – milling line was used to manufacture granules ready for tableting from a suspension of probiotic bacteria. A mechanistic drying model suitable to predict the product temperature in the dryer and the moisture content of the granules was built. This allowed finding the optimal operating conditions for maximal bacteria load and low residual moisture content in the product, which has the potential to enable direct integration with the tableting unit. A continuous experiment was carried out with the in silico - optimized process parameters. The produced granules had high probiotic content and were suitable for tableting, which demonstrates the usefulness of the model-based process optimization in complex integrated pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

Abstract

The benefit of applying foliar fertilizers is that crops can uptake them faster than soil fertilizers. The aim of this study was to test and valuate the effects of one zinc (Zn) and two amino acids-containing (AS) foliar fertilizers on a fodder corn hybrid’s physiological and biochemical processes. The experiment was conducted in field conditions. The following parameters of a fodder maize hybrid were measured one, two, three, four, five, and six weeks after the treatments (WAT): physiological (relative chlorophyll content and the effectiveness of PSII); biochemical (activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD); ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and guaiacol peroxidase (POD); the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA); and proline. The yield increased by 10%, 6%, and 10% at Zn, Zn+AS1, and Zn+AS2 treatments. The yield parameters, such as grain/cob and ear weight, were also significantly higher under the applied three treatments relative to the control. The relative chlorophyll content was significantly higher one, two, and four weeks after Zn-treatment, and some changes were also observed when Zn and amino acid-containing fertilizer were applied in combination. The latter sampling did not show any notable changes. In addition, the activity of SOD increased when Zn-containing fertilizer was applied, although the effect of AS-containing fertilizer did not show. There was a correlation between the SOD activity and some of the yield parameters. The increasing SOD activity indicated a higher yield (t/ha) and a higher cob weight.

Abstract

Analogical transfer, denoting the ability to use an action that solved a given problem in order to successfully handle a seemingly different but functionally similar problem, requires well-developed self-regulation, as it draws on previous knowledge and demands selecting and shifting between relevant features while ignoring irrelevant ones. Thus, analogical transfer involves executive functions (EFs), yet the contribution of specific EFs is unclear, particularly during the development of the capacity before the age of 5. Here, for the first time, we investigated the contribution of world knowledge, working memory and set-shifting in 2.5- to 4.5-year-olds’ (N = 86) capacity to single-event analogical transfer in a simple, non-verbal, tool-use task. Analogical transfer was independent of age but was predicted by a measure of world knowledge and a measure of working memory across the age-span tested. Our results suggest that world knowledge and working memory underscore analogical transfer early in development.
