Microstrip patch antennas have been widely used in contemporary mobile communication technology, including 5G. Previous studies in the area have shown that such antennas can be optimized to operate in different bands of 5G. This study proposes a microstrip patch antenna designed to operate at 26 and 28 GHz and aimed at improving the gain and other radiation characteristics by adding a combination of different slot shapes to a single rectangular patch that is very common and popular in 5G antennas. The results show that the gain is noticeably increased by inserting two hammer slots and a rectangular slot in the middle between them. The dimensions of the slots are optimized using the CST Studio Suite simulator. A comparative analysis was performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed over previous designs in terms of gain value and other radiation parameters. Previous works in the area demonstrated that such antennas can be designed to operate in the low, mid, and high bands of 5G networks. This paper focuses on high-band millimeter-wave 5G mobile applications. In particular, the proposed microstrip patch antenna was designed to operate at 26 and 28GHz, which are the first introduced and widely used frequency bands of the 5G. This study aims to enhance the gain and other radiation characteristics of the antenna by adding a combination of different slot shapes to a single rectangular patch that is commonly used in other 5G antennas. The results show that an extremely high gain is achieved by inserting two symmetric L-slots and a middle-placed square slot. The dimensions of the slots were simulated and optimized using the CST Studio Suite simulator. A comparative study was also conducted showing that the proposed antenna features higher gain and directivity and provides very good VSWR and efficiency along with a reasonably large enough bandwidth at the two resonance frequencies considered. The microstrip patch antenna is used in various communication applications including cellular phones, satellites, missiles, and radars, due to its several attractive features such as small size and weight, low cost, and easy fabrication. The microstrip patch antenna consists of a top radiating patch, a bottom ground plane, and a dielectric substrate in between. The patch can have different shapes, the rectangular patch being the most commonly used. In practice, the microstrip antenna suffers from narrow bandwidth and low gain efficiency. This paper aims to enhance the bandwidth and efficiency of a rectangular-patch antenna using the High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). Initially different patch sizes and substrate materials are investigated and optimal antenna parameters are achieved. Then, the antenna performance is further enhanced by inserting single and double slot designs into the patch. Two cost-effective feeding methods are involved in the investigation. Nowadays, there is an increasing attention on novel metaheuristics and their applications in different problems of science and engineering. A new efficient optimization method, called the League Championship Algorithm (LCA) is applied in this paper for the optimal design of electromagnetic devices. This method is inspired by the competition of sport teams in an artificial sport league for several weeks and over a number of seasons. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested against two benchmark problems: the magnetizer and the outrunner-type brushless DC motor. Teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) is a rising star technique among metaheuristic techniques with highly competitive performance. This technique, which has been recently introduced, is based on the effect of influence of a teacher on learners and learners on their colleagues. This paper intends to apply an improved version of TLBO in the field of electromagnetics. To demonstrate its effectiveness in this area, the proposed technique is applied to two benchmarks related to brushless direct current wheel motor problem and testing electromagnetic analysis methods problem number 22. The quality of the results presented shows that the proposed technique is very competitive with other well-known optimization techniques; hence, it is a promising alternative technique for optimization in the field of electromagnetics.
