We present the analysis of the absorption troughs of six outflows observed in quasar SDSS J1130+0411 ($z \approx 3.98$) with radial velocities ranging from $-2400$ to $-15,400$ km s$^{-1}$. These spectra were taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph over the rest frame wavelength range of $1135-1890$ \r{A}. In the main outflow system ($v \approx -3200$ km s$^{-1}$), we identify Fe II and several Fe II* absorption troughs as well as Si II and Si II* troughs, which we use to determine the electron number density $\log n_e = 2.6_{-0.7}^{+0.8}$ cm$^{-3}$. Using the column densities of these and other ions, we determine a photoionization solution with hydrogen column density $\log N_H = 21.44_{-0.33}^{+0.24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and ionization parameter $\log U_H = -1.75_{-0.45}^{+0.28}$. From these values we derive the distance $R = 16_{-11}^{+23}$ kpc, the average mass flow rate $\dot{M} = 4100_{-2400}^{+6600}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and the kinetic luminosity $\log \dot{E}_k = 46.13_{-0.37}^{+0.41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This $\dot{E}_k$ is $1.4_{-0.8}^{+2.2}$% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity, and therefore contributes significantly to AGN feedback., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, published in MNRAS

We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. Quasar Q0059–2735, one of the first known iron low-ionization broad-absorption-line quasars (FeLoBAL), has a plethora of outflow absorption features at different velocities. Given multiple outflow systems, their troughs from high-ionization transitions form very wide BAL features, e.g. C iv troughs extend from ∼−1000 to −25 000 km s−1. The troughs from low-ionization transitions show more than 1000 narrow absorption lines (NALs) with velocities from −1000 to −3000 km s−1. These include troughs from iron-peak elements, e.g. Fe ii, Fe iii, Cr ii, Mn ii, Ni ii, and Co ii, which are rarely detected in quasar outflows. Most of these troughs are non-black saturated. We constrain the physical conditions of the NALs by fitting the observed Fe ii and Fe iii absorption troughs. We find that the Fe ii absorption arises from a region with an electron temperature (Te) of ∼8000 K and an electron number density (ne) of ∼108 cm−3. The same model also fits well the troughs from other iron-peak elements. In contrast to the Fe ii lines, Fe iii lines are formed in a hotter region, i.e. Te ∼20 000 K. To fit the Fe ii and Fe iii lines simultaneously in a single photoionized cloud, they require a supersolar iron abundance and/or other heating mechanisms for the Fe iii region. The distance (R) of the outflows to the central quasar is determined to be ∼40 pc. The high-resolution data afforded by the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/UVES observations from 2006 and 2018, along with the narrow lines, allow us to constrain the smallest outflow deceleration in any known quasars.

We found a broad absorption line (BAL) outflow in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar SDSS J235702.54-004824.0, in which we identified four subcomponents. We measured the column densities of the ions in one of the subcomponents ($v$ = -1600 km s$^{-1}$), which include O I and Fe II. We found the kinetic luminosity of this component to be at most ~2.4% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity. This is near the amount required to contribute to AGN feedback. We also examined the time-variability of a C IV mini-BAL found at $v$ = -8700 km s$^{-1}$, which shows a shallower and narrower absorption feature attached to it in previous SDSS observations from 2000 and 2001, but not in the spectra from 2005 and onwards., 10 pages, 6 figures. We analyze VLT/X-shooter data for 7 quasars, where we study the relationships between their broad absorption line (BAL) and emission line outflows. We find: 1) the luminosity of the [OIII] $\lambda$5007 emission profile decreases with increasing electron number density (n$_e$) derived from the BAL outflow in the same quasar, 2) the measured velocity widths from the [OIII] emission features and CIV absorption troughs in the same object are similar, and 3) the mean radial velocity derived from the BAL outflow is moderately larger than the one from the [OIII] emission outflow. These findings can be explained by the physical interpretation that the [OIII] and BAL outflow are different manifestations of the same wind. When we have outflows with smaller distances to the central source, their n$_e$ is higher. Therefore, the [OIII] emission is collisionally de-excited and the [OIII] luminosity is then suppressed. Comparisons to previous studies show that the objects in our sample exhibit broad [OIII] emission features similar to the ones in extremely red quasars (ERQs). This might imply that BAL quasars and ERQs have the same geometry of outflows or are at a similar evolutionary stage. We found that the physical parameters derived from the BAL outflows can explain the amount of observed [OIII] luminosity, which strengthens our claim of both BAL and [OIII] outflows are from the same wind. We analyze Very Large Telescope/UVES observations of the quasar SDSS J024221.87+004912.6. We identify four absorption outflow systems: a C iv broad absorption line (BAL) at v approximate to -18,000 km s(-1) and three narrower low-ionization systems with centroid velocities ranging from -1200 to -3500 km s(-1). These outflows show similar physical attributes to the [O iii] outflows studied by Liu et al. (2013). We find that two of the systems are energetic enough to contribute to active galactic nucleus feedback, with one system reaching above 5% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity. We also find that this system is at a distance of 67 kpc away from the quasar, the farthest detected mini-BAL absorption outflow from its central source to date. In addition, we examine the time-variability of the BAL and find that its velocity monotonically increases, while the trough itself becomes shallower over time. Quasar outflows may play a crucial role in regulating the host galaxy, although the spatial scale of quasar outflows remain a major enigma, with their acceleration mechanism poorly understood. The kinematic information of outflow is the key to understanding its origin and acceleration mechanism. Here, we report the galactocentric distances of different outflow components for both a sample and an individual quasar. We find that the outflow distance increases with velocity, with a typical value from several parsecs to more than one hundred parsecs, providing direct evidence for an acceleration happening at a scale of the order of 10 parsecs. These outflows carry ~1% of the total quasar energy, while their kinematics are consistent with a dust driven model with a launching radius comparable to the scale of a dusty torus, indicating that the coupling between dust and quasar radiation may produce powerful feedback that is crucial to galaxy evolution., 10 pages, 4 figures in main text. From Swift monitoring of a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we found a transient X-ray obscuration event in Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3227, and thus triggered our joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations to study this event. Here in the first paper of our series we present the broadband continuum modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) for NGC 3227, extending from near infrared (NIR) to hard X-rays. We use our new spectra taken with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/COS in 2019, together with archival unobscured XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/STIS data, in order to disentangle various spectral components of NGC 3227 and recover the underlying continuum. We find the observed NIR-optical-UV continuum is explained well by an accretion disk blackbody component (Tmax = 10 eV), which is internally reddened by E(B-V) = 0.45 with a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law. We derive the inner radius (12 Rg) and the accretion rate (0.1 solar mass per year) of the disk by modelling the thermal disk emission. The internal reddening in NGC 3227 is most likely associated with outflows from the dusty AGN torus. In addition, an unreddened continuum component is also evident, which likely arises from scattered radiation, associated with the extended narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 3227. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) continuum, and the 'soft X-ray excess', can be explained with a 'warm Comptonisation' component. The hard X-rays are consistent with a power-law and a neutral reflection component. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity of the AGN in NGC 3227 is about 2.2e+43 erg/s in 2019, corresponding to 3% Eddington luminosity. While this active galactic nucleus was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad, and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad-line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad-line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission-line variability. The correlation recovered in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 entered a less obscured state. The short C iv and Lyα lags suggest that the accretion disk extends beyond the UV broad-line region. © 2021. The American Astronomical Society. We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Determining the distance of quasar absorption outflows from the central source (R) and their kinetic luminosity are crucial for understanding their contribution to active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. Here we summarize the results for a sample of nine luminous quasars that were observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that the outflows in more than half of the objects are powerful enough to be the main agents for AGN feedback, and that most outflows are found at R>100 pc. The sample is representative of the quasar absorption outflow population as a whole and is unbiased towards specific ranges of R and kinetic luminosity. Therefore, the analysis results can be extended to the majority of such objects, including broad absorption line quasars. We find that these results are consistent with those of another sample (seven quasars) that is also unbiased towards specific ranges of R and kinetic luminosity. Assuming that all quasars have absorption outflows, we conclude that most luminous quasars produce outflows that can contribute significantly to AGN feedback. We present an analysis of the broad absorption line (BAL) velocity shift that appeared in one of the outflow systems in quasar SDSS J1042+1646. Observations were taken by the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph in 2011 and 2017 in the 500 -- 1050 $\r{A}$ rest frame. The outflow's velocity centroid shifted by $\sim$ --1550 km s$^{-1}$ from --19,500 km s$^{-1}$ to --21,050 km s$^{-1}$ over a rest-frame time of 3.2 yr. The velocity shift signatures are most apparent in the absorption features from the Ne VIII $\lambda\lambda$ 770.41, 780.32 doublet and are supported by the absorption troughs from OV $\lambda$ 629.73 and the Mg X $\lambda\lambda$ 609.79, 624.94 doublet. This is the first time where a quasar outflow velocity shift is observed in troughs from more than one ion and in distinct troughs from a doublet transition (Ne VIII). We attribute the velocity shift to an acceleration of an existing outflow as we are able to exclude photoionization changes and motion of material into and out of the line of sight as alternate explanations. This leads to an average acceleration of 480 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ (1.52 cm s$^{-2}$) in the quasar rest frame. Both the acceleration and the absolute velocity shift are the largest reported for a quasar outflow to date. Based on the absorption troughs of the O V* multiplet, we derive a range for the distance of the outflow ($R$) from the central source, 0.05 pc $, Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJS

We present the analysis of two outflows (S1 at --5500 km s$^{-1}$ and S2 at --9700 km s$^{-1}$) seen in recent HST/COS observations of quasar SDSS J0755+2306 (z = 0.854). The outflows are detected as absorption troughs from both high-ionization species, including N III, O III, and S IV, and very high-ionization species, including Ar VIII, Ne VIII, and Na IX. The derived photoionization solutions show that each outflow requires a two ionization-phase solution. For S1, troughs from S IV* and S IV allow us to derive an electron number density, $n_{e}$ = 1.8$\times$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$, and its distance from the central source of $R$ = 270 pc. For S2, troughs from O III* and O III yield $n_{e}$ = 1.2$\times$10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$ and $R$ = 1600 pc. The kinetic luminosity of S2 is $>$ 12% of the Eddington luminosity for the quasar and therefore can provide strong AGN feedback effects. Comparison of absorption troughs from O III and O VI in both outflow systems supports the idea that for a given element, higher ionization ions have larger covering fractions than lower ionization ones., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJS

Aims. We aim to investigate and characterise the photoionised X-ray emission line regions within NGC 7469. Methods. We apply the photoionisation model, PION, within the spectral fitting code SPEX to analyse the 640 ks RGS spectrum of NGC 7469 gathered during an XMM-Newton observing campaign in 2015. Results. We find the emission line region in NGC 7469 to be multiphased, consisting of two narrow components with ionisation parameters of $\log \xi = 0.4$ and 1.6. A third, broad emission component, with a broadening velocity of $v_b \sim 1400$ km s\textsuperscript{-1} and an outflow velocity of $v_{out} \sim -4500$ km s\textsuperscript{-1}, is required to fit the residuals in the O VII triplet, at around 22 \AA. Assuming a volume filling factor of 0.1, the lower distance limits of the narrow emission line region components are estimated for the first time at 2.6 and 2.5 pc from the central black hole, whereas the broad component has an estimated lower bound distance between 0.004 to 0.03 pc, depending on the assumed plasma parameters. The collisionally ionised plasma from the star burst region in NGC 7469 has a plasma temperature of 0.32 keV and outflow velocity of $-280$ km s\textsuperscript{-1}, consistent with previous results in this campaign. In addition, we model the photoionised plasma of the warm absorber (WA) in NGC 7469, and find that it consists of three photoionised phases, with different values of $\xi$, $N_H$ and $v_{out}$. The upper bound distances of these WA components are 1.9, 0.3 and 0.6 pc, respectively, consistent with archival results. Conclusions. The environment of NGC 7469 is a complex mix of plasma winds absorbing and emitting X-rays. We find the picture painted by our results can be attributed to line emitting plasma located at distances ranging from near the black hole to the torus and beyond the ionised outflows., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Aims. Our aim is to determine the distance of the UV outflow components from the central source, their abundances and total column density, and the mechanism responsible for their observed absorption variability. Methods. We studied the UV spectra acquired during the campaign as well as from three previous epochs (2002-2010). Our main analysis tools are ionic column-density extraction techniques and photoionization models (both equilibrium and time-dependent models) based on the code Cloudy. Results. For component 1 (at -600 km/s) our findings include the following: metallicity that is roughly twice solar; a simple model based on a fixed total column-density absorber, reacting to changes in ionizing illumination that matches the different ionic column densities derived from four spectroscopic epochs spanning 13 years; and a distance of R=6+2.5-1.5 pc from the central source. Component 2 (at -1430 km/s) has shallow troughs and is at a much larger R. For component 3 (at -1880 km/s) our findings include: a similar metallicity to component 1; a photoionization-based model can explain the major features of its complicated absorption trough variability and an upper limit of 60 or 150 pc on R. This upper limit is consistent and complementary to the X-ray derived lower limit of 12 or 31 pc for R. The total column density of the UV phase is roughly 1% and 0.1% of the lower and upper ionization components of the warm absorber, respectively. Conclusions. The NGC 7469 outflow shows super-solar metallicity similar to the outflow in Mrk 279, carbon and nitrogen are twice and four times more abundant than their solar values, respectively. From Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra of five quasars, 16 outflows are detected. For 11 outflows, we are able to constrain their distances to the central source (R) and their energetics. In instances of multiple electron number density determinations (used in the calculation of R) for the same outflow, the values are consistent within errors. For the 11 outflows, eight have measurements for R (between 10 and 1000 pc), one has a lower limit, another has an upper limit, and the last has a range in R. There are two outflows that have enough kinetic luminosity to be major contributors to active galactic nucleus feedback. The outflowing mass is found primarily in a very high-ionization phase, which is probed using troughs from, e.g., Ne VIII, Na IX, Mg X, and Si XII. Such ions connect the physical conditions of these ultraviolet outflows to the X-ray warm absorber outflows seen in nearby Seyfert galaxies. The 180-day Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign on NGC 5548 discovered an anomalous period, the broad-line region (BLR) holiday, in which the emission lines decorrelated from the continuum variations. This is important since the correlation between the continuum-flux variations and the emission-line response is the basic assumption for black hole (BH) mass determinations through reverberation mapping. During the BLR holiday, the high-ionization intrinsic absorption lines also decorrelated from the continuum as a result of variable covering factor of the line of sight (LOS) obscurer. The emission lines are not confined to the LOS, so this does not explain the BLR holiday. If the LOS obscurer is a disk wind, its streamlines must extend down to the plane of the disk and the base of the wind would lie between the BH and the BLR, forming an equatorial obscurer. This obscurer can be transparent to ionizing radiation, or can be translucent, blocking only parts of the SED, depending on its density. An emission-line holiday is produced if the wind density increases only slightly above its transparent state. Both obscurers are parts of the same wind, so they can have associated behavior in a way that explains both holidays. A very dense wind would block nearly all ionizing radiation, producing a Seyfert 2 and possibly providing a contributor to the changing-look AGN phenomenon. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. To elucidate the location, physical conditions, mass outflow rate, and kinetic luminosity of the outflow from the active nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 we used coordinated ultraviolet and X-ray spectral observations in 2012 to follow up our lengthier campaign conducted in 2009. We observed Mrk 509 with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 2012-09-03 and 2012-10-11 coordinated with X-ray observations using the High Energy Transmission Grating on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our far-ultraviolet spectra used grating G140L on COS to cover wavelengths from 920--2000 \AA\ at a resolving power of $\sim2000$, and gratings G130M and G160M to cover 1160--1750 \AA\ at a resolving power of $\sim15,000$. We detect variability in the blue-shifted UV absorption lines on timescales spanning 3--12 years. The inferred densities in the absorbing gas are greater than log $n \rm~cm^{-3} \sim 3$. For ionization parameters ranging over log $U = -1.5 \rm~to~-0.2$, we constrain the distances of the absorbers to be closer than 220 pc to the active nucleus. Context. Obscuration events caused by outflowing clumps or streams of high column density, low ionisation gas, heavily absorbing the X-ray continuum, have been witnessed in a number of Seyfert galaxies. Aims. We report on the X-ray spectral-timing analysis of the December 2016 obscuration event in NGC 3783, aimed at probing variability of the X-ray obscurer on the shortest possible timescales. The main goals of this study are to obtain independent constraints on the density, and ultimately on the distance of the obscuring gas, as well as to characterise the impact of variable obscuration on the observed X-ray spectral-timing characteristics of Seyfert galaxies. Methods. We carried out a comparative analysis of NGC 3783 during unobscured (using archival 2000-2001 XMM-Newton data) and obscured states (using XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data from the 2016 observational campaign). The timescales analysed range between ten hours and about one hour. This study was then generalized to discuss the signatures of variable obscuration in the X-ray spectral-timing characteristics of Seyfert galaxies as a function of the physical properties of the obscuring gas. Results. The X-ray obscurer in NGC 3783 is found to vary on timescales between about one hour to ten hours. This variability is incoherent with the variations of the X-ray continuum. A fast response (on timescales shorter than about 1.5 ks) of the ionisation state of the obscuring gas to the short timescale variability of the primary X-ray continuum provides a satisfactory interpretation of all the observed X-ray spectral-timing properties. This study enabled us to put independent constraints on the density and location of the obscuring gas. Our Swift monitoring program triggered two joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and HST observations on 11 and 21 December 2016 targeting NGC 3783, as its soft X-ray continuum was heavily obscured. Consequently, emission features, including the O VII radiative recombination continuum, stand out above the diminished continuum. We focus on the photoionized emission features in the December 2016 RGS spectra and compare them to the time-averaged RGS spectrum obtained in 2000--2001 when the continuum was unobscured. A two-phase photoionized plasma is required to account for the narrow emission features. These narrow emission features are weakly varying between 2000--2001 and December 2016. We also find a statistically significant broad emission component in the time-averaged RGS spectrum in 2000--2001. This broad emission component is significantly weaker in December 2016, suggesting that the obscurer is farther away than the X-ray broad-line region. In addition, by analyzing the archival high-resolution X-ray spectra, we find that nine photoionized absorption components with different ionization parameters and kinematics are required for the warm absorber in X-rays., accepted to A&A

We analyze new HST/COS spectra for two quasar absorption outflows seen in the quasi-stellar object LBQS 1206+1052. These data cover, for the first time, absorption troughs from $S_{IV}$, $Si_{II}$, and $P_V$. From the ratio of the $S_{IV}$* to $S_{IV}$ column densities, we measure the electron number density of the higher-velocity ($-1400$ km s$^{-1}$, v1400) outflow to be log($n_e$) = $4.23^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$ cm$^{-3}$ and constrain the lower-velocity ($-730$ km s$^{-1}$, v700) outflow to log($n_e$) $>$ $5.3$ cm$^{-3}$. The $n_e$ associated with the higher-velocity outflow is an order of magnitude larger than reported in prior work. We find that the previous measurement was unreliable since it was based on density-sensitive absorption troughs that were likely saturated. Using photoionization models, we determine the best $\chi^2$-minimization fit for the ionization parameter and hydrogen column density of the higher-velocity outflow: log($U_H$) = $-1.73^{+0.21}_{-0.12}$ and log($N_H$) = $21.03^{+0.25}_{-0.15}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We calculate from $U_H$ and $n_e$ a distance of $500^{+100}_{-110}$ pc from the central source to the outflow. Using an SED attenuated by the v700 outflow yields a two-phase photoionization solution for the v1400 outflow, separated by a $\Delta U \approxeq 0.7$. Otherwise, the resultant distance, mass flux, and kinetic luminosity are similar to the unattenuated case. The most robust way for determining the distance of quasar absorption outflows is the use of troughs from ionic excited states. The column density ratio between the excited and resonance states yields the outflow number density. Combined with a knowledge of the outflow's ionization parameter, a distance from the central source (R) can be determined. Here we report results from two surveys targeting outflows that show troughs from S IV. One survey includes 1091 SDSS and BOSS quasar spectra, and the other includes higher-quality spectra of 13 quasars observed with the Very Large Telescope. Our S IV samples include 38 broad absorption line (BAL) outflows, and four mini-BAL outflows. The S IV is formed in the same physical region of the outflow as the canonical outflow-identifying species C IV. Our results show that S IV absorption is only detected in 25% of C IV BAL outflows. The smaller detection fraction is due to the higher total column density ($N_H$) needed to detect S IV absorption. Since R empirically anticorrelates with $N_H$ the results of these surveys can be extrapolated to C IV quasar outflows with lower $N_H$ as well. We find that at least 50% of quasar outflows are at distances larger than 100 pc from the central source, and at least 12% are at distances larger than 1000 pc. To understand the nature of transient obscuring outflows in active galactic nuclei, we observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 on two occasions in December 2016 triggered by Swift monitoring indicating strong soft X-ray absorption in November. We obtained ultraviolet spectra using COS on HST and optical spectra using FEROS on the MPG/ESO 2.2-m telescope that were simultaneous with X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We find new components of broad, blue-shifted absorption associated with Ly$\alpha$, \ion{N}{v}, \ion{Si}{iv}, and \ion{C}{iv} in our COS spectra. The absorption extends from velocities near zero in the rest-frame of the host galaxy to $-6200$ $\rm km~s^{-1}$. These features appear for the first time in NGC 3783 at the same time as the heavy soft X-ray absorption seen in the XMM-Newton X-ray spectra. The X-ray absorption has a column density of $\sim 10^{23}~\rm cm^{-2}$, and it partially covers the X-ray continuum source. The X-ray absorption becomes more transparent in the second observation, as does the UV absorption. Combining the X-ray column densities with the UV spectral observations yields an ionization parameter for the obscuring gas of log $\xi =1.84^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$ $\rm erg~cm~s^{-1}$. Despite the high intensity of the UV continuum in NGC 3783, F(1470 \AA)=$8 \times 10^{-14}~\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~\AA^{-1}$, the well known narrow UV absorption lines are deeper than in earlier observations in unobscured states, and low ionization species such as \ion{C}{iii} appear, indicating that the narrow-line gas is more distant from the nucleus and is being shadowed by the gas producing the obscuration. Despite the high continuum flux levels in our observations of NGC 3783, moderate velocities in the UV broad line profiles have substantially diminished. We investigate the ionic column density variability of the ionized outflows associated with NGC$\sim$7469, to estimate their location and power. This could allow a better understanding of galactic feedback of AGNs to their host galaxies. Analysis of seven XMM-Newton grating observations from 2015 is reported. We use an individual-ion spectral fitting approach, and compare different epochs to accurately determine variability on time-scales of years, months, and days. We find no significant column density variability in a 10 year period implying that the outflow is far from the ionizing source. The implied lower bound on the ionization equilibrium time, 10 years, constrains the lower limit on the distance to be at least 12 pc, and up to 31 pc, much less but consistent with the 1 kpc wide starburst ring. The ionization distribution of column density is reconstructed from measured column densities, nicely matching results of two 2004 observations, with one large high ionization parameter ($\xi$) component at $2, Comment: 13 pages, 9 Figures

We conducted a multi-wavelength six-month campaign to observe the Seyfert galaxy NGC~7469, using the space-based observatories \textit{HST}, \textit{Swift}, \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR}. Here we report the results of the spectral analysis of the 7 simultaneous \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} observations. The sources shows significant flux variability within each observation, but the average flux is less variable among the different pointings of our campaign. Our spectral analysis reveals a prominent narrow neutral \ion{Fe} K$\alpha$ emission line in all the spectra, with weaker contributions from Fe K$\beta$, neutral Ni K$\alpha$ and ionised iron. We find no evidence for variability or relativistic effects acting on the emission lines, which indicates that they originate from distant material. Analysing jointly \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} data a constant photon index is found ($\Gamma$=$1.78\pm0.02$), together with a high energy cut-off $E_{\rm{cut}}=170^{+60}_{-40}$ keV. Adopting a self-consistent Comptonization model, these values correspond to an average coronal electron temperature of kT=$45^{+15}_{-12}$ keV and, assuming a spherical geometry, an optical depth $\tau=2.6\pm0.9$. The reflection component is consistent with being constant, with a reflection fraction in the range $R=0.3-0.6$. A prominent soft excess dominates the spectra below 4 keV. This is best fit with a second Comptonization component, arising from a \virg{warm corona} with an average $kT=0.67\pm0.03$ keV and a corresponding optical depth $\tau=9.2\pm0.2$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted by A&A

We analyze absorption troughs from two outflows within PKS J0352-0711 (S1 at $-$1950 km s$^{-1}$ and S2 at $-$3150 km s$^{-1}$) from spectra taken with Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph, which cover the diagnostic-rich 585-900 Angstrom rest frame wavelength range. In S2, for the first time we clearly detect absorption troughs from Ca IV, Ca V, Ca V*, Ca VII*, and Ca VIII*. The column density measurement of Ca V suggests S2 has a super-solar metallicity. Both outflows require at least two ionization phases where the column density of the very high-ionization phase is roughly 15 times larger than the corresponding high-ionization phase. These high column densities and very high-ionization potential ions are similar to X-ray warm absorbers. The two phases of S2 show a unique velocity centroid shift between associated troughs. Through Monte Carlo measurements of the O V* absorption troughs, we determine the electron number density of S2 (fully corroborated by independent measurements from the Ca V* and Ca VIII* troughs), yielding a distance of 9 pc and a kinetic luminosity of 2$\times$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) has opened a new discovery space for studying quasar absorption outflows and their contribution to AGN feedback. Specifically, COS provides high-quality far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra covering the diagnostic-rich 500-1050 Angstrom rest frame (hereafter, EUV500) of medium redshift objects. The quality and quantity of EUV500 diagnostic troughs allow us to probe the very high-ionization phase, which carries 90% or more of the outflowing material, as well as to determine the distance of most outflows from the central source ($R$). The first objective is impossible to achieve with ground-based spectra, and $R$ can be measured in only $\sim$1% of them. Here, we summarize the main results of the first dedicated survey of such outflows, including the following: 1) Measurements of the three most energetic outflows to date, which can be the main agents for AGN feedback processes in the environments of the host galaxies. 2) All the outflows have a very high-ionization component, similar to the one found in warm absorbers, which carries most of the outflow's kinetic luminosity. This finding suggests that all the high-ionization outflows observed from the ground also have a similar undetected very high-ionization component. 3) Of the 13 studied EUV500 outflows, 9 have $100, Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We present a study of the BAL outflows seen in quasar SDSS J1042+1646 (z = 0.978) in the rest-frame 500 -- 1050 $\r{A}$ (EUV500) region. The results are based on the analysis of recent Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations. Five outflow systems are identified, where in total they include $\sim$70 outflow troughs from ionic transitions. These include the first non-solar detections from transitions of O V*, Ne V*, Ar VI, Ca VI, Ca VII, and Ca VIII. The appearance of very high-ionization species (e.g., Ne VIII, Na IX, and Mg X) in all outflows necessitates at least two-ionization phases for the observed outflows. We develop an interactive Synthetic Spectral Simulation method to fit the multitude of observed troughs. Detections of density sensitive troughs (e.g., S IV* $\lambda$ 657.32 $\r{A}$ and the O V* multiplet) allow us to determine the distance of the outflows ($R$) as well as their energetics. Two of the outflows are at $R$ $\simeq$ 800 pc and one is at $R$ $\simeq$ 15 pc. One of the outflows has the highest kinetic luminosity on record ($\dot{E_{k}}$ $ = 5\times 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$), which is 20% of its Eddington luminosity. Such a large ratio suggests that this outflow can provide the energy needed for active galactic nucleus feedback mechanisms., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, published in ApJS

We detect four very energetic outflows in the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph spectra of quasar 2MASS J1051+1247 with a combined kinetic luminosity ($\dot{E_k}$) of 10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Remarkable similarities are seen in these outflows: velocity centroids between 4900 and 5700 km s$^{-1}$, distances from the central source ($R$) of a few hundred parsecs that are all consistent within the errors, and an $\dot{E_k}$ within a factor of two for all outflows. Hence, a common origin for the outflows is probable. Most of the outflowing mass resides in a very high-ionization phase evident by troughs from Ne VIII, Na IX, Mg X, and Si XII, which connect the physical conditions of these ultraviolet outflows to the X-ray warm absorber outflows seen in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Three of the outflows have two or three independent diagnostics for the electron number density, yielding consistent values for each outflow, which increase the robustness of the $R$ determinations. Troughs from never-before-seen ionic transitions of Ar VI, O IV*, Ne VI*, and Ne V* are identified. With a combined $\dot{E_k}$ that is $7.0^{+6.5}_{-2.3}$ % of the quasar's Eddington luminosity, these outflows are prime candidates to be major agents for various active galactic nuclei feedback effects., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

Supermassive black holes in the nuclei of active galaxies expel large amounts of matter through powerful winds of ionized gas. The archetypal active galaxy NGC 5548 has been studied for decades, and high-resolution X-ray and UV observations have previously shown a persistent ionized outflow. An observing campaign in 2013 with six space observatories shows the nucleus to be obscured by a long-lasting, clumpy stream of ionized gas never seen before. It blocks 90% of the soft X-ray emission and causes simultaneous deep, broad UV absorption troughs. The outflow velocities of this gas are up to five times faster than those in the persistent outflow, and at a distance of only a few light days from the nucleus, it may likely originate from the accretion disk., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures. We conducted a survey of quasar outflows using the VLT/X-shooter spectrograph. When choosing the 14 BAL and mini-BALs comprising this sample, the data did not cover the S IV and S IV* troughs, whose ratio can be used to determine the distance of the outflows from the central source (R). Therefore, this "Blind Survey" is unbiased towards a particular distance scale. Out of the eight outflows where R can be measured, six have R > 100 pc (spanning the range 100-4500 pc), one has R > 10 pc, and only one (at R < 60 pc) is compatible with a much smaller R scale. At least two of the outflows have a kinetic luminosity greater than 0.5% of their Eddington luminosity, implying that they are able to provide significant AGN feedback. The outflows span a range of 0 to -10000 km s$^{-1}$ in velocity; total column density between 10$^{20}$ - 10$^{22.5}$ cm$^{-2}$ ; ionization parameter ($U_H$ ) in the range 0.01 - 1; and electron number density between 10$^3$ - 10$^{5.5}$ cm$^{-3}$ , with one upper and one lower limit. Spectroscopic observations of quasar outflows at rest-frame 500-1000 Angstrom have immense diagnostic power. We present analyses of such data, where absorption troughs from three important ions are measured: first, O IV and O IV* that allow us to obtain the distance of high ionization outflows from the AGN; second, Ne VIII and Mg X that are sensitive to the very high ionization phase of the outflow. Their inferred column densities, combined with those of troughs from O VI, N IV, and H I, yield two important results: 1) The outflow shows two ionization phases, where the high ionization phase carries the bulk of the material. This is similar to the situation seen in x-ray warm absorber studies. Furthermore, the low ionization phase is inferred to have a volume filling factor of 10^(-5)-10^(-6). 2) From the O IV to O IV* column density ratio, and the knowledge of the ionization parameter, we determine a distance of 3000 pc. from the outflow to the central source. Since this is a typical high ionization outflow, we can determine robust values for the mass flux and kinetic luminosity of the outflow: 40 solar masses per year and 10^45 ergs/s, respectively, where the latter is roughly equal to 1% of the bolometric luminosity. Such a large kinetic luminosity and mass flow rate measured in a typical high ionization wind suggests that quasar outflows are a major contributor to AGN feedback mechanisms.

In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring program to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration produces broad and blue-shifted UV absorption lines of Ly$\alpha$, C IV, and N V, together with a new high-ionisation component producing Fe XXV and Fe XXVI absorption lines. In soft X-rays, only narrow emission lines stand out above the diminished continuum as they are not absorbed by the obscurer. Our analysis shows that the obscurer partially covers the central source with a column density of few $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, outflowing with a velocity of few thousand km s$^{-1}$. The obscuration in NGC 3783 is variable and lasts for about a month. Unlike the commonly-seen warm-absorber winds at pc-scale distances from the black hole, the eclipsing wind in NGC 3783 is located at about 10 light days. Our results suggest the obscuration is produced by an inhomogeneous and clumpy medium, consistent with clouds in the base of a radiatively-driven disk wind at the outer broad-line region of the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 6 pages, 6 figures

Outflows in active galaxies (AGNs) are common, although their launching mechanism, location, and physical impact on the host galaxy remain controversial. We conducted a multiwavelength six-month campaign to observe the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with several observatories in order to better understand and quantify the outflow in this AGN. We report on the time-integrated line-resolved X-ray spectrum of NGC 7469 obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton. We use the RGS spectrum to discern the many AGN outflow components. A global fit is applied to obtain their physical parameters. We find that the AGN wind can be well described by three narrow velocity components at -650, -950, and -2050 km/s. The RGS clearly resolves the -20 50 km/s component in C5+ Ly$\alpha$, while the -650 km/s and -950 km/s velocities are blended. Similar velocities are resolved in the UV. The H-equivalent column densities of these components are, respectively, NH = 7x10^20, 2.2x10^21, and 10^20 cm^-2, for a total of 3x10^21 cm^-2. The -650 km/s component shows a broad ionisation distribution. We identify a photo-ionised emission component blue-shifted by -450 km/s which we ascribe to the same outflow that produces the absorption lines. The elemental abundance ratios of C, N, Ne, S, and Fe to O in the outflow tend to be between 1 - 2 times solar. Preliminary estimates of the absorber distance from the AGN center suggest it is at least a few pc away from the center, but more advanced methods need to be applied in order to obtain better constraints. The complex X-ray spectrum of NGC 7469 demonstrates the richness of high energy phenomena taking place in AGN cores. The subtle spectroscopic differences between the various components require deep, high-resolution observations, such as the present RGS spectrum, if one is to resolve them and perform quantitative plasma diagnostics., Comment: To be published in A&A

CRTS J084133.15+200525.8 is an optically bright quasar at z=2.345 that has shown extreme spectral variability over the past decade. Photometrically, the source had a visual magnitude of V~17.3 between 2002 and 2008. Then, over the following five years, the source slowly brightened by approximately one magnitude, to V~16.2. Only ~1 in 10,000 quasars show such extreme variability, as quantified by the extreme parameters derived for this quasar assuming a damped random walk model. A combination of archival and newly acquired spectra reveal the source to be an iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar with extreme changes in its absorption spectrum. Some absorption features completely disappear over the 9 years of optical spectra, while other features remain essentially unchanged. We report the first definitive redshift for this source, based on the detection of broad H-alpha in a Keck/MOSFIRE spectrum. Absorption systems separated by several 1000 km/s in velocity show coordinated weakening in the depths of their troughs as the continuum flux increases. We interpret the broad absorption line variability to be due to changes in photoionization, rather than due to motion of material along our line of sight.
