This paper is concerned with asymptotic theory for penalized spline estimator in bivariate additive model. The focus of this paper is put upon the penalized spline estimator obtained by the backfitting algorithm. The convergence of the algorithm as well as the uniqueness of its solution are shown. The asymptotic bias and variance of penalized spline estimator are derived by an efficient use of the asymptotic results for the penalized spline estimator in marginal univariate model. Asymptotic normality of estimator is also developed, by which an approximate confidence interval can be obtained. We study the properties of light mesons in the scalar, pseudo-scalar, and vector channels within the light-front quantization, by using the (one flavor) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with vector interaction. After taking into account the effects of chiral symmetry breaking, we derive the bound-state equation in each channel in the large N limit (N is the number of colors), which means that we consider the lowest q\bar{q} Fock state with the constituent quark and antiquark. By solving the bound-state equation, we simultaneously obtain a mass and a light-cone (LC) wavefunction of the meson. While we reproduce the previous results for the scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons, we find that, for a vector meson, the bound-state equations for the transverse and longitudinal polarizations look different from each other. However, eventually after imposing a cutoff which is invariant under the parity and boost transformations, one finds these two are identical, giving the same mass and the same (spin-independent) LC wavefunction. When the vector interaction becomes larger than a critical value, the vector state forms a bound state, whose mass decreases as the interaction becomes stronger. While the LC wavefunction of the pseudo-scalar meson is broadly distributed in longitudinal momentum (x) space, that of the vector meson is squeezed around x=1/2., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures, minor modification, to appear in Phys. We apply the light-front quantization to the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the vector interaction, and compute vector meson's mass and light-cone wavefunction in the large N limit. Following the same procedure as in the previous analyses for scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons, we derive the bound-state equations of a q-qbar system in the vector channel. We include the lowest order effects of the vector interaction. The resulting transverse and longitudinal components of the bound-state equation look different from each other. But eventually after imposing an appropriate cutoff, one finds these two are identical, giving the same mass and the same (spin-independent) light-cone wavefunction. We study the O(N) symmetric linear sigma model at finite temperature as the low-energy effective models of quantum chromodynamics(QCD) using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis(CJT) effective action for composite operators. It has so far been claimed that the Nambu-Goldstone theorem is not satisfied at finite temperature in this framework unless the large N limit in the O(N) symmetry is taken. We show that this is not the case. The pion is always massless below the critical temperature, if one determines the propagator within the form such that the symmetry of the system is conserved, and defines the pion mass as the curvature of the effective potential. We use a new renormalization prescription for the CJT effective potential in the Hartree-Fock approximation. A numerical study of the Schwinger-Dyson equation and the gap equation is carried out including the thermal and quantum loops. We point out a problem in the derivation of the sigma meson mass without quantum correction at finite temperature. U_A(1) symmetry breaking is studied by introducing the flavor mixing interaction proposed by Kobayashi, Maskawa and 't Hooft. Combining the one gluon exchange interaction, the rainbow like Schwinger-Dyson equation and the ladder like Bethe-Salpeter equation are derived. The anomalous PCAC relation in the framework of this approximation is considered. The masses of the pseudoscalar mesons pi,eta and eta' are calculated. It is found that the pion mass is not sensitive to the strength of the flavor mixing interaction. On the other hand, the masses of eta and eta' are reproduced by a relatively weak flavor mixing interaction, for which the chiral symmetry breaking is dominantly induced by the soft-gluon exchange interaction. The decay constants are calculated and the anomalous PCAC relation is numerically checked. It is found that the flavor structures of the eta and eta' mesons significantly depend on their masses and therefore it is quetionable to define a flavor mixing angle for eta and eta'., Comment: 31 pages, LaTex, 8 figures

The Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) method is applied to finite temperature systems for the study of non-perturbative methods in the field theory. We choose the O(N) linear sigma model as the first step. Under the local potential approximation, we solve the Wilsonian RG equation as a non-linear partial differential equation numerically. The evolution of the domain is taken into account using the naive cut and extrapolation procedure. Our procedure is shown to yield the correct solution obtained by the auxiliary field method in the large $N$ limit. To introduce thermal effects, we consider two schemes. One in which the sum of the Matsubara frequencies are taken before the scale is introduced is found to give more physical results. We observe a second order phase transition in both the schemes. We study the finite quark mass effects of the low-energy QCD using the improved ladder Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations which are derived in the manner consistent with the vector and axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identities. The non-perturbative mass-independent renormalization allows us to calculate the quark condensate for a non-zero quark mass. We explicitly show that the PCAC relation holds. The key ingredients are the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, the generalized Noether current and the introduction of the regularization function to the Lagrangian. The reasonable values of the pion mass, the pion decay constant and the quark condensate are obtained with a rather large $\Lambda_{QCD}$. The pion mass square and the pion decay constant are almost proportional to the current quark mass up to the strange quark mass region. It suggests that the chiral perturbation is applicable up to the strange quark mass region. The Bethe--Salpeter equation for the pion in chiral symmetric models is studied with a special care to consistency with low-energy relations. We propose a reduction of the rainbow Schwinger--Dyson and the ladder Bethe--Salpeter equations with a dressed gluon propagator. Dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in effective models of QCD is studied. Introducing a cut-off function or a non-local interaction, the Noether current must be modified and thus the Ward-Takahashi identity and the PCAC relation are modified accordingly. We point out that the pion decay constant must be defined consistently with the Noether current so that the low-energy relations are satisfied. We define the proxy of the Noether current for general effective models, which is consistent with loop expansion of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action. A general formula for the pion decay constant in terms of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude is derived. The effective Pagels-Stokar formula is proposed which is useful to estimate the decay constant without solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX
