Abstract

In this research, trying to verify learners' vocabulary development through the practical lessons using storytelling in Japanese language education. In the lessons, targeting sixth graders, took not only storytelling but also story related activities by the concept of whole language approach which connects other subjects. Based on the results of the practical lessons,the storytelling promotes output skill. In the class, the joint storytelling had been conducted for 10 to 15 minutes each time in a single story and continuedonce a week, 8 times in total. In other words, the whole lesson was taken 80 to 120 minutes in total. Each class took 40 minutes that is taken only a couple of hours to retell the story. This result demonstrate that it is possible touse storytelling in Japanese language education. In addition, the class evaluation for the practical lessons increased learners' vocabularies and gained high satisfaction. As a result of pre and post tests, learners are understanding meaning of the word in meaningful sentences more than single separated word.

Abstract

Comparative analysis is crucial to academic studies of public administration because it provides understanding of the nature of different types of public service institution: in particular, it helps to show what they do and don’t have in common, what kinds of institution they are, and what kinds of problems they face. However, in order to effectively conduct comparative research of public service institutions it is important that some thought is given to how they can best be compared. Accordingly, it is argued in this study that the differences between public service institutions can be appropriately analysed by examining their respective risk control cultures. This study makes use of the grid and group cultural theory, as developed by Mary Douglas, Aaron Wildavsky and Christopher Hood, to analyse the risk control cultures of the English and Japanese prison services in regard to two specific types of risk, namely suicide and violence. The results show that particular patterns of organizational behaviour within the English and Japanese prison services can be identified with their respective risk control cultures. More specifically, the English prison service tends to try to control risk by using formal rules and granting strong leadership roles to governors. By contrast, the Japanese prison service tends to use informal rules and group pressures to control risk. Furthermore, the peculiar organizational patterns of risk control within both organizations are often not recognised by their members. As a result, the strengths and weaknesses of organizations can be identified by analysing the patterns of risk control behaviour within them.

36. Molecular and cellular insights into auxin-regulated primary root growth: a comparative study of Arabidopsisand rice

Abstract

Auxin regulation of primary root growth in Arabidopsisand rice was compared by analyzing root growth in response to changes in auxin levels. A bell-shaped root-growth curve was identified in both Arabidopsisand rice in response to change in auxin levels. In Arabidopsis, cell division was the main regulator of root growth in response to auxin; in rice, auxin promoted root growth by regulating cell division and cell length. The expression levels of PLETHORA (PLT) genes in response to change in auxin level followed a bell-shaped curve and closely correlated with cell division in Arabidopsisbut not in rice, implying that PLTgene expression plays key role to control root growth in Arabidopsis. The level of auxin in Arabidopsiswas optimal for primary root elongation, while in rice it was higher than optimal. 45. Characteristics of Hospital-Based Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy in Japan

Abstract

Objective: This article explores characteristics of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) in Japan, a country which provides an egalitarian, low cost, and easy-access health care system. Methods: We sent a questionnaire survey to 11 leading doctors in the child abuse field in Japan, each located in different hospital-based sites. Child abuse doctors answered questions regarding the characteristics of MSBP cases for whom they had helped care. Results: Twenty-one MSBP cases (20 families) were reported. Characteristics of the victims included: no differences based on sex, 4.6 years of age on average when MSBP was confirmed, and an average of 1.9 years duration of MSBP abuse. Biological mothers were at least one of the perpetrators in 95% of cases. Among the 12 cases (57%) who remained with their families, 2 victims died. Only 5% of perpetrators had a medical background or relatives who engaged in healthcare work. Conclusion: There are similar features of MSBP cases between Japan and other English-speaking countries, such as the UK or the US. However, perpetrators of MSBP in Japan did not have a medical background. Easier access to hospital resources in Japan may give greater opportunities for perpetrators to obtain medical knowledge from doctors or nurses. Practice implications: The findings suggest that perpetrators of MSBP should not be assumed to possess a medical background in a country which provides universal medical care such as Japan. A contributory factor of MSBP may be the high frequency of medical consultations and equal level of accessibility of medical resources for Japanese citizens. Social welfare services that need to decide on custody for MSBP victims should recognize the relatively high risk of life-threatening danger in their family of origin. Further collaboration between hospital staff including pediatricians, nurses, medical social workers and staff at the social welfare services is needed to protect children from MSBP.

47. Novel Colloidal Dispersing Concept in Aqueous Media for Preparation by Wet-Jet Milling Dispersing Method.

Abstract

Dispersing particles in a liquid phase is significant for producing various functional nano/bio applications. The wet-jet milling method has been gaining attention as an attractive dispersing method in the preparation of soft material suspensions. This is because the main driving force of dispersion by the wet-jet milling method is the shear force, which is weaker than that it is in the ultrasonication dispersing method. In the wet-jet milling method, the pressure of the narrow channel which the liquid is passes through and the number of passes are used as the control parameters for dispersing the particles. However, the values of the pressure depend on the size (diameter and length) of the narrow channel, thus, it is not a commonly used dispersing parameter in dispersing by wet-jet milling to set the dispersing condition by various wet-jet milling instruments. In addition, wet-jet milling users must optimize the dispersing conditions such as the pressure and number of passes in the narrow channel, therefore, a simple prediction/optimization method of the dispersing size by the wet-jet milling method is desired. In this study, we established a novel colloidal dispersing concept, the dispersing energy input based on a calorimetric idea, for particle suspension preparation using the wet-jet milling method. The dispersing energy input by wet-jet milling was quantitatively calculated under various conditions during the dispersing by wet-jet milling, and then, the dispersing size of the particles was easily predicted/optimized. We demonstrated the usability of the concept by preparing aqueous suspensions of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles with various surfactants using the wet-jet milling method. Based on the established concept, in a case study on dispersing CaCO3, we found that changes in the micelle sizes of the surfactants played a role in wet-jet milling. The novel idea of the representation of energy input makes it possible to estimate the appropriate condition of the dispersing process by wet-jet milling to control the size of particles.
