Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous plasma process that transforms magnetic energy into particle energy during eruptive events throughout the universe. Reconnection not only converts energy during solar flares and geomagnetic substorms that drive space weather near Earth, but it may also play critical roles in the high energy emissions from the magnetospheres of neutron stars and black holes. In this review article, we focus on collisionless plasmas that are most relevant to reconnection in many space and astrophysical plasmas. Guided by first-principles kinetic simulations and spaceborne in-situ observations, we highlight the most recent progress in understanding this fundamental plasma process. We start by discussing the non-ideal electric field in the generalized Ohm's law that breaks the frozen-in flux condition in ideal magnetohydrodynamics and allows magnetic reconnection to occur. We point out that this same reconnection electric field also plays an important role in sustaining the current and pressure in the current sheet and then discuss the determination of its magnitude (i.e., the reconnection rate), based on force balance and energy conservation. This approach to determining the reconnection rate is applied to kinetic current sheets of a wide variety of magnetic geometries, parameters, and background conditions. We also briefly review the key diagnostics and modeling of energy conversion around the reconnection diffusion region, seeking insights from recently developed theories. The Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway (LOP-Gateway, or simply Gateway) is a crewed platform that will be assembled and operated in the vicinity of the Moon by NASA and international partner organizations, including ESA, starting from the mid-2020s. It will offer new opportunities for fundamental and applied scientific research. The Moon is a unique location to study the deep space plasma environment. Moreover, the lunar surface and the surface-bounded exosphere are interacting with this environment, constituting a complex multi-scale interacting system. This paper examines the opportunities provided by externally mounted payloads on the Gateway in the field of space plasma physics, heliophysics and space weather, but also examines the impact of the space environment on an inhabited platform in the vicinity of the Moon. It then presents the conceptual design of a model payload, required to perform these space plasma measurements and observations. It results that the Gateway is very well-suited for space plasma physics research. It allows a series of scientific objectives with a multidisciplinary dimension to be addressed.

The twisted local magnetic field at the front or rear regions of the magnetic clouds (MCs) associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) is often nearly opposite to the direction of the ambient interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). There is also observational evidence for magnetic reconnection (MR) outflows occurring within the boundary layers of MCs. In this paper a MR event located at the western flank of the MC occurring on 2000-10-03 is studied in detail. Both the large-scale geometry of the helical MC and the MR outflow structure are scrutinized in a detailed multi-point study. The ICME sheath is of hybrid propagation-expansion type. Here the freshly reconnected open field lines are expected to slip slowly over the MC resulting in plasma mixing at the same time. As for MR, the current sheet geometry and the vertical motion of the outflow channel between ACE-Geotail-WIND spacecraft was carefully studied and tested. The main findings on MR include: (1) First-time observation of non-Petschek-type slow-shock-like discontinuities in the inflow regions; (2) Observation of turbulent Hall magnetic field associated with a Lorentz force deflected electron jet; (3) Acceleration of protons by reconnection electric field and their back-scatter from the slow shock-like discontinuity; (4) Observation of relativistic electron near the MC inflow boundary/separatrix; these electron populations can presumably appear as a result of non-adiabatic acceleration, gradient B drift and via acceleration in the electrostatic potential well associated with the Hall current system; (5) Observation of Doppler shifted ion-acoustic and Langmuir waves in the MC inflow region., Comment: 43 pages, 10 figures, accepted in J. We investigate compressive turbulence at sub-ion scales with measurements from the Magnetospheric MultiScale Mission. The tetrahedral configuration and high time resolution density data obtained by calibrating spacecraft potential allow an investigation of the turbulent density fluctuations in the solar wind and their three-dimensional structure in the sub-ion range. The wave-vector associated with the highest energy density at each spacecraft frequency is obtained by application of the Multi-point signal resonator technique to the four-point density data. The fluctuations show a strong wave-vector anisotropy $k_{\perp}\gg k_{\parallel}$ where the parallel and perpendicular symbols are with respect to the mean magnetic field direction. The plasma frame frequencies show two populations, one below the proton cyclotron frequency $\omega<\Omega_{ci}$ consistent with kinetic Alfv\'en wave (KAW) turbulence. The second component has higher frequencies $\omega > \Omega_{ci}$ consistent with ion Bernstein wave (IBW) turbulence. Alternatively, these fluctuations may constitute KAWs that have undergone multiple wave-wave interactions causing a broadening in the plasma frame frequencies. The scale-dependent kurtosis in this wave-vector region shows a reduction in intermittency at the small scales which can also be explained by the presence of wave activity. Our results suggest that small-scale turbulence exhibits linear-wave properties of kinetic Alfv\'en and possibly ion-Bernstein/magnetosonic waves. Compressive plasma turbulence is investigated at sub-ion scales in the solar wind using both the Fast Plasma Investigation (FPI) instrument on the Magnetospheric MultiScale mission (MMS), as well as using calibrated spacecraft potential data from the Spin Plane Double Probe (SDP) instrument. The data from FPI allow a measurement down to the sub-ion scale region ($f_{sc}\gtrsim 1$ Hz) to be investigated before the instrumental noise becomes significant at a spacecraft frame frequency of $f_{sc}\approx 3$Hz, whereas calibrated spacecraft potential allows a measurement up to $f_{sc}\approx 40$Hz. In this work, we give a detailed description of density estimation in the solar wind using the spacecraft potential measurement from the SDP instrument on MMS. Several intervals of solar wind plasma have been processed using the methodology described which are made available. One of the intervals is investigated in more detail and the power spectral density of the compressive fluctuations is measured from the inertial range to the sub-ion range. The morphology of the density spectra can be explained by either a cascade of Alfv\'en waves and slow waves at large scales and kinetic Alfv\'en waves at sub-ion scales, or more generally by the Hall effect. The Electron Diffusion Region (EDR) is the region where magnetic reconnection is initiated and electrons are energized. Because of experimental difficulties, the structure of the EDR is still poorly understood. A key question is whether the EDR has a homogeneous or patchy structure. Here we report Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) novel spacecraft observations providing evidence of inhomogeneous current densities and energy conversion over a few electron inertial lengths within an EDR at the terrestrial magnetopause, suggesting that the EDR can be rather structured. These inhomogenenities are revealed through multi-point measurements because the spacecraft separation is comparable to a few electron inertial lengths, allowing the entire MMS tetrahedron to be within the EDR most of the time. These observations are consistent with recent high-resolution and low-noise kinetic simulations.

We investigate the accuracy with which the reconnection electric field $E_M$ can be determined from in-situ plasma data. We study the magnetotail electron diffusion region observed by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) on 2017-07-11 at 22:34 UT and focus on the very large errors in $E_M$ that result from errors in an $LMN$ boundary-normal coordinate system. We determine several $LMN$ coordinates for this MMS event using several different methods. We use these $M$ axes to estimate $E_M$. We find some consensus that the reconnection rate was roughly $E_M$=3.2 mV/m $\pm$ 0.06 mV/m, which corresponds to a normalized reconnection rate of $0.18\pm0.035$. Minimum variance analysis of the electron velocity (MVA-$v_e$), MVA of $E$, minimization of Faraday residue, and an adjusted version of the maximum directional derivative of the magnetic field (MDD-$B$) technique all produce {reasonably} similar coordinate axes. We use virtual MMS data from a particle-in-cell simulation of this event to estimate the errors in the coordinate axes and reconnection rate associated with MVA-$v_e$ and MDD-$B$. The $L$ and $M$ directions are most reliably determined by MVA-$v_e$ when the spacecraft observes a clear electron jet reversal. When the magnetic field data has errors as small as 0.5\% of the background field strength, the $M$ direction obtained by MDD-$B$ technique may be off by as much as 35$^\circ$. The normal direction is most accurately obtained by MDD-$B$. On 22 October 2015, VAP and MMS obtained near-continuous observations of the full radial extent of the duskside equatorial plasmasphere and plume. The plume is evident in in situ plasma data and an equatorial mapping of the ionospheric total electron content. The properties of the equatorial plasmasphere change dramatically from its the inner radiation belt to its outermost boundary (the magnetopause, near a reconnection site). The density decreases by a factor of $\sim$1000 over this range and scales with $L$-shell as $L^{-4.3\pm0.4}$, in good agreement with with theoretical expectations of the expansion of a flux tube volume during outward radial transport. The proton temperature increases by a factor of $\sim$100 over this same range, with the most pronounced heating occurring at $L>7$, which was covered by the orbit of MMS., Comment: Submitted to Geophysical Research Letters

We investigate the time dependence of electromagnetic-field-to-plasma energy conversion in the electron diffusion region of asymmetric magnetic reconnection. To do so, we consider the terms in Poynting's theorem. In a steady state there is a perfect balance between the divergence of the electromagnetic energy flux $\nabla \cdot \vec{S}$ and the conversion between electromagnetic field and particle energy $\vec{J} \cdot \vec{E}$. This energy balance is demonstrated with a particle-in-cell simulation of reconnection. We also evaluate each of the terms in Poynting's theorem during an observation of a magnetopause reconnection region by Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS). We take the equivalence of both sides of Poynting's theorem as an indication that the errors associated with the approximation of each term with MMS data are small. We find that, for this event, balance between $\vec{J}\cdot\vec{E}=-\nabla\cdot\vec{S}$ is only achieved for a small fraction of the energy conversion region at/near the X-point. Magnetic energy was rapidly accumulating on either side of the current sheet at roughly three times the predicted energy conversion rate. Furthermore, we find that while $\vec{J}\cdot\vec{E}>0$ and $\nabla\cdot\vec{S}<0$ are observed, as is expected for reconnection, the energy accumulation is driven by the overcompensation for $\vec{J}\cdot\vec{E}$ by $-\nabla\cdot\vec{S}>\vec{J}\cdot\vec{E}$. We note that due to the assumptions necessary to do this calculation, the accurate evaluation of $\nabla\cdot\vec{S}$ may not be possible for every MMS-observed reconnection event; but if possible, this is a simple approach to determine if reconnection is or is not in a steady-state., Comment: Resubmitted to GRL after minor rev. on 1 February 2018

We identify a dayside electron diffusion region (EDR) encountered by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission and estimate the terms in generalized Ohm's law that controlled energy conversion near the X-point. MMS crossed the moderate-shear (130 degrees) magnetopause southward of the exact X-point. MMS likely entered the magnetopause far from the X-point, outside the EDR, as the size of the reconnection layer was less than but comparable to the magnetosheath proton gyro-radius, and also as anisotropic gyrotropic "outflow" crescent electron distributions were observed. MMS then approached the X-point, where all four spacecraft simultaneously observed signatures of the EDR, e.g., an intense out-of-plane electron current, moderate electron agyrotropy, intense electron anisotropy, non-ideal electric fields, non-ideal energy conversion, etc. We find that the electric field associated with the non-ideal energy conversion is (a) well described by the sum of the electron inertial and pressure divergence terms in generalized Ohms law though (b) the pressure divergence term dominates the inertial term by roughly a factor of 5:1, (c) both the gyrotropic and agyrotropic pressure forces contribute to energy conversion at the X-point, and (d) both out-of-the-reconnection-plane gradients (d/dM) and in-plane (d/dL,N) in the pressure tensor contribute to energy conversion near the X-point. Driven by the support and interest of the international space plasma community to examine simultaneous physical plasma scales and their interactions, the Cross-Scale Mission concept was submitted and accepted as an ESA Cosmic Vision M-class candidate mission. This report presents an overview of the assessment study phase of the 7 ESA spacecraft Cross-Scale mission.
