We have investigated the vortex dynamics in a thin film of an iron-based superconductor FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ by observing second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the THz frequency range. We visualized the picosecond trajectory of two-dimensional vortex motion in a pinning potential tilted by Meissner shielding current. The SHG perpendicular to the driving field is observed, corresponding to the nonreciprocal nonlinear Hall effect under the current-induced inversion symmetry breaking, whereas the linear Hall effect is negligible. The estimated vortex mass, as light as a bare electron, suggests that the vortex core moves independently from quasiparticles at such a high frequency and large velocity $\approx$300 km/s., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Torsional oscillator (TO) is an experimental technique which is widely used to investigate superfluid responses in helium systems confined in porous materials or adsorbed on substrates. In these systems, heat capacity (HC) is also an important quantity to study the local thermodynamic properties. We have developed a simple method to incorporate the capability of HC measurement into an existing TO without modifying the TO itself. By inserting a rigid thermal isolation support made of alumina and a weak thermal link made of fine copper wires between a standard TO and the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator in parallel, we were able to carry out simultaneous TO and HC measurements on exactly the same helium sample, i.e., four atomic layers of $^4$He adsorbed on graphite, with good accuracies down to 30 mK. The data reproduced very well the previous workers' results obtained independently using setups optimized for individual measurements. This method is conveniently applicable to a variety of experiments where careful comparisons between results of TO and HC measurements are crucial. Giant second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is observed in a thin film of an s-wave superconductor NbN, where the time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$-) and space-inversion ($\mathcal{P}$-) symmetries are simultaneously broken by supercurrent injection. We demonstrate that the phase of the second-harmonic (SH) signal flips when the direction of supercurrent is inverted, i.e., the signal is ascribed to the nonreciprocal response that occurs under broken $\mathcal{P}$- and $\mathcal{T}$-symmetries. The temperature dependence of the SH signal exhibits a sharp resonance, which is accounted for by the vortex motion driven by the THz electric field in an anharmonic pinning potential. The maximum conversion ratio $\eta_{\mathrm{SHG}}$ reaches $\approx10^{-2}$ in a thin film NbN with the thickness of 25 nm after the field cooling with a very small magnetic field of $\approx1$ Oe, for a relatively weak incident THz electric field of 2.8 kV/cm at 0.48 THz., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Deep Neural Networks are often though to lack interpretability due to the distributed nature of their internal representations. In contrast, humans can generally justify, in natural language, for their answer to a visual question with simple common sense reasoning. However, human introspection abilities have their own limits as one often struggles to justify for the recognition process behind our lowest level feature recognition ability: for instance, it is difficult to precisely explain why a given texture seems more characteristic of the surface of a finger nail rather than a plastic bottle. In this paper, we showcase an application in which deep learning models can actually help human experts justify for their own low-level visual recognition process: We study the problem of assessing the adhesive potency of copper sheets from microscopic pictures of their surface. Although highly trained material experts are able to qualitatively assess the surface adhesive potency, they are often unable to precisely justify for their decision process. We present a model that, under careful design considerations, is able to provide visual clues for human experts to understand and justify for their own recognition process. Not only can our model assist human experts in their interpretation of the surface characteristics, we show how this model can be used to test different hypothesis of the copper surface response to different manufacturing processes.

Higgs mode in superconductors, i.e. the collective amplitude mode of the order parameter does not associate with charge nor spin fluctuations, therefore it does not couple to the electromagnetic field in the linear response regime. On the contrary to this common understanding, here, we demonstrate that, if the dc supercurrent is introduced into the superconductor, the Higgs mode becomes infrared active and is directly observed in the linear optical conductivity measurement. We observed a sharp resonant peak at $\omega=2\Delta$ in the optical conductivity spectrum of a thin-film NbN in the presence of dc supercurrent, showing a reasonable agreement with the recent theoretical prediction. In low temperature experiments, resins have many applications as glues or thermal and electrical insulators. Cyanate ester resins (CEs) are a high-temperature compatible thermoset resin whose glass-transition temperature $T_g$ is ~300 $^\circ$C. Recently, we found that CEs also withstand low temperatures without microcracking by measuring $^4$He permeability. Here, we measured specific heat C, thermal conductivity \kappa, and magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ of different kinds of CEs in the wide temperature range from room temperature to 0.5 K for C and 2 K for other two. The thermal properties, C and \kappa, of different kinds of CEs are surprisingly coincident with each other. We discuss chemical structures and crystallinity of CEs and their blends based on the measured thermal properties. Compared to Stycast 1266, a commonly-used epoxy resin in low temperature experiments, C of CEs is larger by a factor of 3 (<= 30 K), \kappa is lower by a factor of 4 (<= 10 K), indicating the small thermal diffusivity. The \chi values are as small as Stycast 1266, indicative of their high purity. We have measured surface morphology and gas adsorption characteristics of uncompressed pyrolytic graphite sheet (uPGS) which is a candidate substrate for AC and DC superflow experiments on monolayers of 4He below T = 1 K. The PGS is a mass-produced thin graphite sheet with various thicknesses between 10 and 100 {\mu}m. We employed a variety of measuring techniques such as imagings with optical microscope, SEM and STM, Raman spectroscopy, and adsorption isotherm. PGS has smooth and atomically-flat external surfaces with high crystallinity. Although the specific surface area (<0.1 m$^2$/g) is rather small, by making use of its smooth external surface, the thinnest uPGS of 10 {\mu}m thick is found to be suitable for the superflow experiments on the strictly two-dimensional helium systems., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Journal of Low Temperature Physics. We have made thermal and electrical transport measurements of uncompressed pyrolytic graphite sheet (uPGS), a mass-produced thin graphite sheet with various thicknesses between 10 and 100 {\mu}m, at temperatures between 2 and 300 K. Compared to exfoliated graphite sheets like Grafoil, uPGS has much higher conductivities by an order of magnitude because of its high crystallinity confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. This material is advantageous as a thermal link of light weight in a wide temperature range particularly above 60 K where the thermal conductivity is much higher than common thermal conductors such as copper and aluminum alloys. We also found a general relationship between thermal and electrical conductivities in graphite-based materials which have highly anisotropic conductivities. This would be useful to estimate thermal conductance of a cryogenic part made of these materials from its electrical conductance more easily measurable at low temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures
