Abstract: We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced μ± and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, pμ>400 MeV/c and θμ200 MeV/c⁠, θπ600 MeV/c⁠, θp

Abstract: This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the ν μ charged current quasielastic (CCQE) cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ( p μ ) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ( θ μ ). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be ⟨ σ ⟩ = ( 0.83 ± 0.12 ) × 10 − 38 cm 2 . The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, M QE A , of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) p μ − cos θ μ distribution, the effective M QE A parameter was measured to be 1.2 6 + 0.21 − 0.18 GeV / c 2 ( 1.4 3 + 0.28 − 0.22 GeV / c 2 ).

It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the finegrained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron–positron pairs, we achieved 95% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738 ´ 1020 protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of NC induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114 ´ 10-38 cm2 (90% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of ⟨En⟩ ~ 0.6 GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals.

Abstract: A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more than 1020 at the GeV scale.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the flux-integrated cross section for inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon. The double-differential measurements are given as a function of the muon momentum and angle. Relative to our previous publication on this topic, these results have an increased angular acceptance and higher statistics. The data sample presented here corresponds to 5.7×1020 protons on target. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be (6.950±0.662)×10−39 cm2 nucleon−1 and is consistent with our simulation.

Abstract: The single $\pi^0$ production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water in a neutrino beam with a peak neutrino energy of 0.6 GeV has been measured using the P{\O}D, one of the subdetectors of the T2K near detector. The production rate was measured for data taking periods when the P{\O}D contained water ($2.64\times{}10^{20}$ protons-on-target) and also periods without water ($3.49 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target). A measurement of the neutral current single $\pi^0$ production rate on water is made using appropriate subtraction of the production rate with water in from the rate with water out of the target region. The subtraction analysis yields 106 $\pm$ 41 (stat.) $\pm$ 69 (sys.) signal events, which is consistent with the prediction of 157 events from the nominal simulation. The measured to expected ratio is 0.68 $\pm$ 0.26 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.44 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.12 (flux). The nominal simulation uses a flux integrated cross section of $7.63\times{}10^{-39}$ cm${}^2$ per nucleon with an average neutrino interaction energy of 1.3 GeV., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters θ 23 and Δ m 2 32 governing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, the parameters are measured separately for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Using 7.482 × 1 0 20 POT in neutrino running mode and 7.471 × 1 0 20 POT in antineutrino mode, T2K obtained sin 2 ( θ 23 ) = 0.5 1 + 0.08 − 0.07 and Δ m 2 32 = 2.5 3 + 0.15 − 0.13 × 10 − 3 eV 2 / c 4 for neutrinos, and sin 2 ( ¯ θ 23 ) = 0.4 2 + 0.25 − 0.07 and Δ ¯ m 2 32 = 2.5 5 + 0.33 − 0.27 × 10 − 3 eV 2 / c 4 for antineutrinos (assuming normal mass ordering). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed.

Abstract: The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of 14.7(7.6)×1020 protons on target in the neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 νe candidates and seven anti-νe candidates are observed, while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for δCP=0 and normal mass ordering. The obtained 2σ confidence interval for the CP-violating phase, δCP, does not include the CP-conserving cases (δCP=0, π). The best-fit values of other parameters are sin2θ23=0.526+0.032−0.036 and Δm232=2.463+0.071−0.070×10−3 eV2/c4.

Abstract: The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $\nu_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_\nu \sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $\nu_{\mu}$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_\mu$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($\theta_\mu$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_{\mu}cos\theta_\mu$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

Abstract: International audience; In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to $2\times{}10^{22}$ protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with $3\sigma$ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.

13. Diffusion-Dominated Luminescence Dynamics of CsPbBr 3 Studied Using Cathodoluminescence and Microphotoluminescence Spectroscopy.

Abstract: Time-resolved or time-correlation measurements using cathodoluminescence (CL) reveal the electronic and optical properties of semiconductors, such as their carrier lifetimes, at the nanoscale. However, halide perovskites, which are promising optoelectronic materials, exhibit significantly different decay dynamics in their CL and photoluminescence (PL). We conducted time-correlation CL measurements of CsPbBr 3 using Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry and compared them with time-resolved PL. The measured CL decay time was on the order of subnanoseconds and was faster than PL decay at an excited carrier density of 2.1 × 10 18 cm -3 . Our experiment and analytical model revealed the CL dynamics induced by individual electron incidences, which are characterized by highly localized carrier generation followed by a rapid decrease in carrier density due to diffusion. This carrier diffusion can play a dominant role in the CL decay time for undoped semiconductors, in general, when the diffusion dynamics are faster than the carrier recombination.

14. Attosecond-Resolved Coherent Control of Lattice Vibrations in Thermoelectric SnSe.

Abstract: Manipulating lattice vibrations is the cornerstone to achieving ultralow thermal conductivity in thermoelectrics. Although spatial control by novel material designs has been recently reported, temporal manipulation, which can shape thermoelectric properties under nonequilibrium conditions, remains largely unexplored. Here, taking SnSe as a representative, we have demonstrated that in the ultrafast pump-pump-probe spectroscopy, electronic and lattice coherences inherited from optical excitations can be exploited independently to manipulate phonon oscillations in a highly selective manner. Specifically, when the pump-pump delay time ( t mod ) is in the electronic coherence time range, the amplitude, frequency, and lifetime of all phonon modes are simultaneously following the optical cycle. While extending t mod into the lattice coherence time range, the amplitude of each coherent phonon mode can be selectively manipulated according to its intrinsic period without changing the frequency and lifetime. This work opens up exciting avenues to temporally and discriminatorily manipulate phononic processes in thermoelectric materials.

15. Photoinduced Ultrafast Symmetry Switch in SnSe.

Abstract: Layered tin selenide (SnSe) has recently emerged as a high-performance thermoelectric material with the current record for the figure of merit ( ZT ) observed in the high-temperature Cmcm phase. So far, access to the Cmcm phase has been mainly obtained via thermal equilibrium methods based on sample heating or application of external pressure, thus restricting the current understanding only to ground-state conditions. Here, we investigate the ultrafast carrier and phononic dynamics in SnSe. Our results demonstrate that optical excitations can transiently switch the point-group symmetry of the crystal from Pnma to Cmcm at room temperature in a few hundreds of femtoseconds with an ultralow threshold for the excitation carrier density. This nonequilibrium Cmcm phase is found to be driven by the displacive excitation of coherent A g phonons and, given the absence of low-energy thermal phonons, exists in SnSe with the status of 'cold lattice with hot carriers'. Our findings provide an important insight for understanding the nonequilibrium thermoelectric properties of SnSe.

Abstract: Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

17. Microstructural deformation process of shock-compressed polycrystalline aluminum.

Abstract: Plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials under shock wave loading is a critical characteristic in material science and engineering. However, owing to the nanosecond time scale of the shock-induced deformation process, we currently have a poor mechanistic understanding of the structural changes from atomic scale to mesoscale. Here, we observed the dynamic grain refinement of polycrystalline aluminum foil under laser-driven shock wave loading using time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Diffraction spots on the Debye-Scherrer ring from micrometer-sized aluminum grains appeared and disappeared irregularly, and were shifted and broadened as a result of laser-induced shock wave loading. Behind the front of shock wave, large grains in aluminum foil were deformed, and subsequently exhibited grain rotation and a reduction in size. The width distribution of the diffraction spots broadened because of shock-induced grain refinement and microstrain in each grain. We performed quantitative analysis of the inhomogeneous lattice strain and grain size in the shocked polycrysalline aluminum using the Williamson-Hall method and determined the dislocation density under shock wave loading.

Abstract: The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of 14.7(7.6)×10^{20} protons on target in the neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 ν_{e} candidates and seven anti-ν_{e} candidates are observed, while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for δ_{CP}=0 and normal mass ordering. The obtained 2σ confidence interval for the CP-violating phase, δ_{CP}, does not include the CP-conserving cases (δ_{CP}=0, π). The best-fit values of other parameters are sin^{2}θ_{23}=0.526_{-0.036}^{+0.032} and Δm_{32}^{2}=2.463_{-0.070}^{+0.071}×10^{-3} eV^{2}/c^{4}.

19. Coherent control theory and experiment of optical phonons in diamond.

Abstract: The coherent control of optical phonons has been experimentally demonstrated in various physical systems. While the transient dynamics for optical phonons can be explained by phenomenological models, the coherent control experiment cannot be explained due to the quantum interference. Here, we theoretically propose the generation and detection processes of the optical phonons and experimentally confirm our theoretical model using the diamond optical phonon by the doublepump-probe type experiment.

Abstract: The vomeronasal organ (VNO) that preferentially detects species-specific substances is diverse among animal species, and its morphological properties seem to reflect the ecological features of animals. This histological study of two female reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) found that the VNO is developed in giraffes. The lateral and medial regions of the vomeronasal lumen were covered with sensory and nonsensory epithelia, respectively. The vomeronasal glands were positive for periodic acid-Schiff and alcian blue (pH 2.5) stains. The VNO comprises several large veins like others in the order Cetartiodactyla, suggesting that these veins function in a pumping mechanism in this order. In addition, numerous thin-walled vessels located immediately beneath the epithelia covering the lumen entirely surrounded the vomeronasal lumen. Abstract: T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135 μ-like events, and 7.471×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66 μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin^{2}2θ_{13} have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δ_{CP} spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal mass ordering. The CP conservation hypothesis (δ_{CP}=0, π) is excluded at 90% C.L.

Abstract: The olfactory system of mammals comprises a main olfactory system that detects hundreds of odorants and a vomeronasal system that detects specific chemicals such as pheromones. The main (MOB) and accessory (AOB) olfactory bulbs are the respective primary centers of the main olfactory and vomeronasal systems. Most mammals including artiodactyls possess a large MOB and a comparatively small AOB, whereas most cetaceans lack olfactory bulbs. The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is semiaquatic and belongs to the order Cetartiodactyla, family Hippopotamidae, which seems to be the closest extant family to cetaceans. The present study evaluates the significance of the olfactory system in the hippopotamus by histologically analyzing the MOB and AOB of a male common hippopotamus. The MOB comprised six layers (olfactory nerve, glomerular, external plexiform, mitral cell, internal plexiform, and granule cell), and the AOB comprised vomeronasal nerve, glomerular, plexiform, and granule cell layers. The MOB contained mitral cells and tufted cells, and the AOB possessed mitral/tufted cells. These histological features of the MOB and the AOB were similar to those in most artiodactyls. All glomeruli in the AOB were positive for anti-Gαi2, but weakly positive for anti-Gαo, suggesting that the hippopotamus vomeronasal system expresses vomeronasal type 1 receptors with a high affinity for volatile compounds. These findings suggest that the olfactory system of the hippopotamus is as well developed as that of other artiodactyl species and that the hippopotamus might depend on its olfactory system for terrestrial social communication., (© 2017 S. Abstract: We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π^{+} production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al.

24. Bandgap modulation in photoexcited topological insulator Bi2Te3 via atomic displacements.

Abstract: The atomic and electronic dynamics in the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 under strong photoexcitation were characterized with time-resolved electron diffraction and time-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy. Three-dimensional TIs characterized as bulk insulators with an electronic conduction surface band have shown a variety of exotic responses in terms of electronic transport when observed under conditions of applied pressure, magnetic field, or circularly polarized light. However, the atomic motions and their correlation between electronic systems in TIs under strong photoexcitation have not been explored. The artificial and transient modification of the electronic structures in TIs via photoinduced atomic motions represents a novel mechanism for providing a comparable level of bandgap control. The results of time-domain crystallography indicate that photoexcitation induces two-step atomic motions: first bismuth and then tellurium center-symmetric displacements. These atomic motions in Bi2Te3 trigger 10% bulk bandgap narrowing, which is consistent with the time-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy results.

Abstract: T2K reports its first measurements of the parameters governing the disappearance of ν[over ¯]_{μ} in an off-axis beam due to flavor change induced by neutrino oscillations. The quasimonochromatic ν[over ¯]_{μ} beam, produced with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at J-PARC, is observed at the far detector Super-Kamiokande, 295 km away, where the ν[over ¯]_{μ} survival probability is expected to be minimal. Using a data set corresponding to 4.01×10^{20} protons on target, 34 fully contained μ-like events were observed. The best-fit oscillation parameters are sin^{2}(θ[over ¯]_{23})=0.45 and |Δm[over ¯]_{32}^{2}|=2.51×10^{-3} eV^{2} with 68% confidence intervals of 0.38-0.64 and 2.26-2.80×10^{-3} eV^{2}, respectively. These results are in agreement with existing antineutrino parameter measurements and also with the ν_{μ} disappearance parameters measured by T2K.

27. Ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction revealing the nonthermal dynamics of near-UV photoexcitation-induced amorphization in Ge2Sb2Te5.

Abstract: Because of their robust switching capability, chalcogenide glass materials have been used for a wide range of applications, including optical storages devices. These phase transitions are achieved by laser irradiation via thermal processes. Recent studies have suggested the potential of nonthermal phase transitions in the chalcogenide glass material Ge2Sb2Te5 triggered by ultrashort optical pulses; however, a detailed understanding of the amorphization and damage mechanisms governed by nonthermal processes is still lacking. Here we performed ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction and single-shot optical pump-probe measurements followed by femtosecond near-ultraviolet pulse irradiation to study the structural dynamics of polycrystalline Ge2Sb2Te5. The experimental results present a nonthermal crystal-to-amorphous phase transition of Ge2Sb2Te5 initiated by the displacements of Ge atoms. Above the fluence threshold, we found that the permanent amorphization caused by multi-displacement effects is accompanied by a partial hexagonal crystallization.

28. Measuring quantum coherence in bulk solids using dual phase-locked optical pulses.

Abstract: Electronic and phonon coherence are usually measured in different ways because their time-scales are very different. In this paper we simultaneously measure the electronic and phonon coherence using the interference of the electron-phonon correlated states induced by two phase-locked optical pulses. Interferometric visibility showed that electronic coherence remained in a semiconducting GaAs crystal until ~40 fs; in contrast, electronic coherence disappeared within 10 fs in a semimetallic Bi crystal at room temperature, differing substantially from the long damping time of its phonon coherence, in the picosecond range.

Abstract: Femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe experiments were carried out to study ultrafast lattice dynamics of ferroelectric lithium tantalate. Both the fully symmetric (A 1 mode) and doubly degenerate (E mode) coherent phonons at the center of the Brillouin zone were excited via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, as confirmed by the excitation intensity dependence.

30. Optical manipulation of coherent phonons in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films.

Abstract: The coherent phonons of YBa2Cu3O7-delta are believed to be strongly coupled to its superconductivity. Controlling the phonons below its transition temperature, therefore, may serve as a promising scheme of the control of superconductivity. Here we demonstrate optical manipulation of the Ba-O and Cu-O vibrations in a thin-film YBa2Cu3O7-delta below its transition temperature using a pair of femtosecond laser pulses. The interpulse delay is tuned to integral and half-integral multiples of the oscillation period of a specific phonon mode (Ba-O or Cu-O vibration) to enhance and suppress its amplitude, respectively.

31. Pathway for the transformation from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite into amorphous diamond.

Abstract: We report the discovery of a novel pathway for the transformation from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite foils into amorphous diamond platelets. This pathway consists of three stages of neutron irradiation, shock compression, and rapid quenching. We obtained transparent platelets which show photoluminescence but no diamond Raman peak, similar to the case of amorphous diamond synthesized from C60 fullerene. Wigner defects formed by irradiation are considered to make a high density of diamond nucleation sites under shock compression, of which growth is suppressed by rapid quenching.

32. Diagnostic system to measure spatial and temporal profiles of shock front using compact two-stage light-gas gun and line reflection method.

Abstract: A diagnostic system has been developed to obtain spatial and temporal profiles of shock front. A two-stage light-gas gun is used to accelerate impactors in velocity range with 4-9 km/s. The system consists of the Faraday-type electromagnetic sensors to measure impactor velocity, optical system with high-speed streak camera to measure shock-wave velocities, and the delay trigger system with self-adjustable pre-event pulse generator. We describe the specifications and performance of this system and data-analysis technique on the tilt and distortion of the shock front. Finally, we obtained the Hugoniot data of copper for system demonstration.

33. Nanosecond rapid freezing of liquid benzene under shock compression studied by time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract: Nanosecond time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate the shock-induced liquid-solid phase transition and crystallization of liquid benzene. Temporal evolution of the Raman shift of the ring-breathing and C-H stretching modes is investigated. A metastable supercompressed state and a liquid-solid phase transition are observed under shock compression. Time-resolved Raman spectra reveal that the liquid state is initially a metastable state and rapidly transforms to the solid state within 25 ns under shock compression at 4.2 GPa.

34. Prepulse effects on the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with high-Z solids

Abstract: Kalpha emission of high-Z solid targets irradiated by an intense, short (<100 fs) laser pulse in the 10 keV region is shown to be sensitive to the electron energy cutoff, which is strongly dependent on the density gradient of the plasma corona formed by a long prepulse. The absorption rate of short laser pulses, the hot electron distribution, and x-ray emission from a Cu slab target are studied via a hybrid model, which combines the hydrodynamics, collisional particle-in-cell, and Monte Carlo simulation techniques, and via a direct spectroscopic measurement. An absorption mechanism originating from the interaction of the laser pulse with plasma waves is found to increase the absorption rate by over 30% even for a very short, s-polarized laser pulse. Calculated and measured x-ray spectra are in good agreement, confirming the electron energy cutoff.
