Abstract

For chiral liquid crystals that express topologically protected defects and thermally driven mechanical rotation, the size- and temperature-driven reversal of the rotational direction of their droplets was demonstrated even under a fixed temperature gradient. This unconventional reversal indicates the dependence of thermomechanical coupling on the molecular orientational order, this dependence is justified through an examination of the size, temperature, and molecular structure as well as by phenomenological arguments on the order parameter.

20. Protective Effect of Edaravone Against Oxidative Stress in C2C12 Myoblast and Impairment of Skeletal Muscle Regeneration Exposed to Ischemic Injury in Ob/ob Mice

Abstract

Background: The aims of this study were to analyze the effects of the administration of edaravone on C2C12 myoblasts exposed to oxidative stress; to evaluate the skeletal muscles in ob/ob mice; and to analyze the effect of the administration of edaravone in the regeneration of skeletal muscle after ischemic injury.Methods: In C2C12 myoblasts, oxidative stress was induced by the exposure to 250μM H2O2 for 4h with or without pretreatment of 100μM edaravone. Thereafter, the viability and expression of TNF-α were analyzed by MTS assay and PCR, respectively. Furthermore, an in vivo study was performed on male C57/BL6-ob/ob mice (10 weeks old) and the respective control mice. The skeletal muscles of tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius were excised for histological analysis and TBARS assay after the measurement of blood flow. In addition, the regeneration of the skeletal muscles was analyzed for the expression of MyoD 7 days after the ligation of the right femoral artery.Results: Edaravone significantly inhibited the reduction of the viability as well as upregulation of TNF-α expression by treatment with H2O2. In ob/ob mice, wet weight of muscles was significantly lower than that in control mice. In histology, ob/ob mice had significantly less multi-angle shaped myofibers and a significantly high level of MDA. Furthermore, MyoD expression was lower in ob/ob mice than in control mice after the ischemic injury, while edaravone (3 mg/kg) increasingly enhanced MyoD expression.Conclusion: Edaravone attenuated the oxidative stress on C2C12 myoblasts, and was effective to regeneration of skeletal muscles after ischemia in ob/ob mice., 本文/Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, Mie University, Tsu, Japan, 10p

Abstract

The synthesis and structural characterization of mono- and multilayers of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles on a gold substrate were investigated. CdS-nanoparticle mono- and multilayers were fabricated by an alternate immersion of the substrate into ethanolic solutions of dithiol. A layer-by-layer structure of dithiol self-assembled and cadmium sulfide monolayers was confirmed with the aid of Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at each stage of fabrication of the composite film.

Abstract

Controlling the very small amount of inclusion of impurity elements by addition to the plating bath of various organic additives was found to be very effective in developing electrodeposited high-[B.sub.s] CoNiFe soft magnetic thin films with desirably high resistivity. Included impurities were suggested to cause not only electron scattering but also decreasing grain size, both of which led to an increase of the resistivity. Chemical state of impurities was indicated to be controllable by selection of additives based on the functional group for adsorption. Index Terms--Electrodeposition, impurities, organic additives, resistivity, soft magnetic thin films.

Abstract

The thermal stability and high-frequency permeability of high-[B.sub.s] CoNiFe thin films were investigated. CoNiFe films exhibited excellent soft magnetic properties and good thermal stability up to 350 [degrees] C. Annealing in longitudinal magnetic field enabled to achieve [H.sub.k] as high as 35 Oe, while the [H.sub.k] value after annealing in a transverse magnetic field was less than 20 Oe. By suppressing the core loss, the effective permeability of high-[B.sub.s] CoNiFe thin film at high frequencies was improved successfully. Index Terms--Soft magnetic thin films, CoNiFe, high [B.sub.s], thermal stability, [H.sub.k], high-frequency permeability.

Abstract

In order to increase the resistivity of electrodeposited high [B.sub.s] CoNiFe thin film, the effect of an organic additive such as diethylenetriamine (DET) added to the plating bath was investigated. The values of [Rho] and [H.sub.c] were gradually increased as a function of DET concentration. The desirable soft magnetic CoNiFe thin film with [Rho] = 25-90 [Mu][Omega]-cm under the conditions of [B.sub.s] [is greater than] 1.9 T and [H.sub.c] [is less than] 2.5 Oe was developed as function of carbon in the deposited films. Additionally, the high resistivity CoNiFe thin film with [Rho] = 130 [Mu][Omega]-cm was established under the conditions of [B.sub.s] = 1.7 T and [H.sub.c] [is less than] 6 Oe. Abstract

The enantioselectivity of the self assembled monolayer (SAM) of homocysteine (Hcy)(HSCH2]CH2CH(NH2)COOH formed on the (111)-oriented gold surface and the redox behavior of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) which is an electrochemically active chiral molecule, are analyzed. The appearance of the two pairs of redox waves reveals that there are two different paths for the electron transfer between the DOPA molecule and the electrode.

Abstract

Enantioselective crystal growth of leucine on a solid surface modified with the SAM, where leucine molecules are covalently attached is shown by X-ray diffraction method. It is shown that enantiomers attached to the SAM play an important role in inducing enantioselectivity through the interaction with the prenucleation aggregates formed in solution.

The enantioselective adsorption of phenylalanine onto self-assembled monolayers of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2, 2E-dithiol (BNSH) on gold is detailed. The monolayer of BNSH self assembled monolayer and the l-phenylalanine molecules, the monolayer of BNSH provides a hydrophobic surface for the adsorption of the aromatic amino acid.
