In this study, we synthesized a self-oscillating polymer chain with N-ethylacrylamide (NEAAm) as the main-chain. This exhibits a higher lower critical solution temperature than an N-isopropylacrylamide main chain. We subsequently measured the transmittance self-oscillation of poly[NEAAm-co-Ru(bpy)3] [Ru(bpy)3 = 4-vinyl-4’-methyl-2,2’-bipyridinebis(2,2’ bipyridine)bis(hexafluorophosphate) ruthenium] solutions comprising three Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) substrates (malonic acid, sodium bromate, and sulfuric acid), under stirring at constant temperature. The soluble-insoluble self-oscillation of the polymer solution originated from the different solubility of the Ru(bpy)3 moiety as a catalyst of the BZ reaction in the reduced and oxidized states. We demonstrated that the self-oscillating behavior was significantly affected by the initial concentration of the sodium bromate. Moreover, we clarified that the lifetime of the transmittance self-oscillation can be predicted from the initial concentration of malonic acid.

In this study, we investigated the lifetime and self-oscillating behavior of a polymer chain with a high lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The polymer chain comprised 4-vinyl-4´-methyl-2,2´-bipyridinebis(2,2´-bipyridine)bis(hexafluorophosphate) ruthenium as catalyst for the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction and N-ethylacrylamide as the polymer main-chain with a high LCST when compared to N-isopropylacrylamide. We demonstrated that the self-oscillating behavior was significantly affected by the polymer concentration and measuring temperature. Moreover, we established that the lifetime of the transmittance self-oscillation can be predicted from the polymer concentration and measuring temperature.

In this work, we fabricated a fiber-stiffened soft actuator with PEDOT/PSS films as electrode. Embedding nylon fibers in the soft actuator successfully suppressed twisting deformations, resulting in a large and persistent actuation displacement. We evaluated the effects of the fiber spacing (1, 2, 3 and 4 mm) on the displacement and assessed the actuation displacement as a function of applied voltage (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 V) and frequency (0.2 and 1 Hz) with an actuation time of 500 s. We demonstrated that the fiberstiffened actuator with 2 mm fiber spacing exhibited steady actuation cycles (4.2 mm average displacement) in comparison with those with different spacings (1, 3, and 4 mm) and that without the fiber.

The development of actuators for power sources is essential for the efficient manipulation of fluids in microfluidics systems. In this work, a capacitor-type three-layer paper actuator was fabricated by sandwiching a polyelectrolyte layer between two films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS). The paper actuator exhibited stable large electromechanical deformations in bilateral symmetry under alternating square-wave electric field. The actuation properties were examined in a function of voltage (±0.5, ±1, ±1.5, ±2, and ±2.5 V) and frequency (1, 0.5, 0.2, and 0.05 Hz). In addition, the PEDOT/PSS electrode films with different thicknesses were prepared, and the effects of actuator thickness on actuation properties were examined. As a result, it was found that the actuator displacement increased considerably with reducing actuator thickness. In addition, the actuator with a thickness of 48 μm demonstrated a maximum displacement of 5.8 mm at a voltage of 1.5 V and a frequency of 0.05 Hz. The proposed actuator can be potentially used in the development of power sources for micropumps and check valves of microfluidic devices.

Anisotropic chemical wave propagation of self-oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was demonstrated in the poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) gel films embedded with macroscopically aligned liquid crystalline inorganic nanosheets. Although the average propagation rate of chemical wave v̅ was 3.56 mm min -1 in the gels without nanosheets, the propagation was retarded in the gels with 1 wt % of nanosheets: [Formula: see text] = 1.89 mm min -1 and [Formula: see text] = 1.33 mm min -1 along the direction parallel and perpendicular to the nanosheet planes, respectively. Thus, the wave propagation is anisotropic with the anisotropy ratio [Formula: see text] = 1.42 in these gels and the periodic patterns formed by the BZ reaction were concentric ellipses, different from circles seen in isotropic gels. Furthermore, the propagation rate and degree of anisotropy were controllable by nanosheet concentration. These phenomena can be explained that the diffusion of molecules inside the gel is effectively hindered along the direction perpendicular to the nanosheet planes due to the very large aspect ratio of the aligned nanosheets. The present systems will be applicable for anisotropic self-oscillating soft actuators with one-dimensional motions as well as for ideal model system of BZ reactions.

A simple fabrication method for patterned carbon nanotube (CNT) films is presented, using the concept of light-induced dispersibility switching with a photoresponsive dispersant. A comparison with other dispersants highlights the important role played by an azobenzene-derived cationic molecule as a photoisomerizable dispersant in the successful manufacture of patterned CNT films. Upon UV irradiation for a short time (∼0.5 min), a dispersion composed of CNTs and photoresponsive dispersant exhibited a dispersibility change due to the photoisomerization of the photoresponsive dispersant, and then the dispersant detached-CNT deposited onto the substrate. Our method enables patterned CNT films to be obtained directly from CNT dispersions onto various substrates such as glass, polyethylene terephthalate, and silicone rubber, expanding the possible applications of CNT films. Furthermore, the process minimizes the amount of the residual dispersant in the fabricated CNT film, reducing the amount of impurities, and improving the quality of the patterned CNT film.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are components of the innate immune system and may be potential alternatives to conventional antibiotics because they exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The AMP cecropin P1 (CP1), isolated from nematodes found in the stomachs of pigs, is known to exhibit antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we investigated the interaction between CP1 and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is the main component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, using circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). CD results showed that CP1 formed an α-helical structure in a solution containing LPS. For NMR experiments, we expressed (15) N-labeled and (13) C-labeled CP1 in bacterial cells and successfully assigned almost all backbone and side-chain proton resonance peaks of CP1 in water for transferred nuclear Overhauser effect (Tr-NOE) experiments in LPS. We performed (15) N-edited and (13) C-edited Tr-NOE spectroscopy for CP1 bound to LPS. Tr-NOE peaks were observed at the only C-terminal region of CP1 in LPS. The results of structure calculation indicated that the C-terminal region (Lys15-Gly29) formed the well-defined α-helical structure in LPS. Finally, the docking study revealed that Lys15/Lys16 interacted with phosphate at glucosamine I via an electrostatic interaction and that Ile22/Ile26 was in close proximity with the acyl chain of lipid A., (Copyright © 2016 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

We have investigated the self-breaking mechanism of atomic scale Au nanocontacts at room temperature in air. In the conductance traces, we frequently observed traces showing both a 1G(0) (2e(2)/h) and 3G(0) plateaux, or only a 2G(0) plateau in the conductance regime below 3G(0). The statistical analysis showed a negative correlation between the appearance of 1G(0) and 2G(0) peaks, and a positive correlation between 1G(0) and 3G(0) peaks. This conductance behavior suggested that the symmetric triple atomic rows changed into a symmetric single row, while the asymmetric double rows broke without changing into a symmetric single row. The regular self-breaking process can be explained by the breaking of the thermodynamically stable Au nanocontacts which were formed during the self-breaking of the contacts.
