A new molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been prepared for the high selective extraction of lamotrigine (LTG), a widely used antiepileptic drug, in human serum. The MIPs were polymerized by bulk polymerization using our synthesized compound, 2-(4-vinylphenyl) quinolin-4-carboxylic acid, as functional monomer, which achieved better adsorption specificity than universal MIPs. Then, the molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) based on this material was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the detection of LTG in human serum. The results of method validation showed that the developed method presented a good precision and accuracy, and the linearity was in the range of 1.50–40.00 mg/mL with the limit of quantitation (LOQ) at 0.20 mg/mL. The recovery ranged from 80.8% to 83.8% with RSD ranges from 5.5% to 11.1%. The validated method was successfully used to determine the concentration of LTG in human simulate serum samples.

Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) imposes a heavy global disease burden. However, current etiology, diagnosis and treatment remain unsatisfactory and no previous study has resolved this problem. Building on the strengths and limitations of previous cohort studies of MDD, the prospective cohort study of depression (PROUD) is a 3-year large-scale cohort study designed to collect multidimensional data with a flexible follow-up schedule and strategy. The goal is to establish a nationally representative, high-quality, standardized depression cohort to support precise diagnosis and treatment of MDD and address the gap in current research. Methods PROUD is a patient-based, nationally representative multicenter prospective cohort study with baseline and 3-year follow-up assessments. It will be carried out from January 2022 to December 2026 in 52 qualified tertiary hospitals in China. A total of 14,000 patients diagnosed with MDD, according to the DSM-5 criteria, and aged ≥ 16 years, will be recruited to PROUD. Participants aged 18-65 years who have not received any treatment during a depressive episode will be included in the precision medicine cohort (PMC) of PROUD (n=4,000). Patients who meet the general eligibility criteria but not the PMC criteria will be included in the naturalistic observation cohort (NOC) of PROUD (n=10,000). A multiple follow-up strategy, including scheduled, remote, telephone, external visits and patient self-reports, will be implemented to collect comprehensive sociodemographic, clinical information, biospecimens, neuroimaging, cognitive function and electrophysiology data and digital phenotypes according to strict standard operating procedures implemented across centers. Trial registration: ChiCTR2200059053, registered on 23 April 2022, http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=165790. Conclusions PROUD is a prospective cohort study of MDD patients in China. It will provide a comprehensive database facilitating further analyses and aiding the development of homeostatic and precision medicine in China.

Most comparative studies of media are undertaken between different countries. It is normally assumed that there are considerable commonalities between the media in a given country and it is usually argued that these are sufficient to form a ‘media system’, which can usefully be contrasted with that of another country. It is relatively unusual to find two sets of media within one country that are sufficiently distinct as be considered as different systems. This paper explores one of the exceptions to that general rule: the case of the Hong Kong media as compared with those of mainland China. Given the different historical and current situations of the two locations at the time the research was conducted, it is to be expected that the kinds of journalism practised would be radically dissimilar. The results of a content analysis of five mainland and three Hong Kong papers demonstrate that, at the aggregate level, there are indeed important differences. A more detailed analysis, however, demonstrates that each of the three Hong Kong papers is in fact closer to mainland groupings than they are to each other. One Hong Kong paper, Ta Kung Pao, is closest to the most ‘official’ grouping of mainland papers, while Ming Pao falls in to a grouping with the ‘liberal’ mainland paper. The now defunct Apple Daily, on the other hand, has the closest links with the ‘popular official’ mainland press. Taken together, these findings suggest that the common assumption that different forms of journalism are best compared on a national basis is incorrect and that factors like market position and ideological orientation have an important influence on the kinds of journalism practised across borders.

AIM: To quantitatively analyze the retinal intermediate and deep capillary plexus (ICP and DCP) in patients with retinal deep vascular complex ischemia (RDVCI), using 3D projection artifacts removal (3D PAR) optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: RDVCI patients and gender- and age-matched healthy controls were assessed and underwent OCTA examinations. The parafoveal vessel density (PFVD) of retinal deep vascular complex (DVC), ICP, and DCP were analyzed, and the percentage of reduction (PR) of PFVD was calculated. RESULTS: Twenty-four eyes in 22 RDVCI patients (20 in acute phase and 4 in chronic phase) and 24 eyes of 22 healthy subjects were enrolled as the control group. Significant reduction of PFVD in DVC, ICP, and DCP was observed in comparison with the controls (DVC: acute: 43.59%±6.58% vs 49.92%±5.49%, PR=12.69%; chronic: 43.50%±3.33% vs 51.20%±3.80%, PR=15.04%. ICP: acute: 40.28%±7.91% vs 46.97%±7.14%, PR=14.23%; chronic: 41.48%±2.87% vs 46.43%±3.29%, PR=10.66%. Sexual conflict over parental investment is widespread among species with biparental care. Studies have indicated that a high degree of behavioural similarity between the two parents can increase offspring survival; however, it remains unclear how sexual conflict over parental care is resolved. In this study, we examined whether similarity of personality traits between the two parents plays an important role in affecting the provisioning behaviour of each sex in a wild population of the chestnut thrush, Turdus rubrocanus. First, as expected, the mating pairs with more similar personality traits had higher provisioning rates than those pairs with dissimilar traits. Moreover, we found that the similarity of personality traits can modulate the sexual conflict over provisioning in this species, as both parents with more similar partners had relatively higher and less divergent provisioning rates. A partner removal experiment revealed how the sole female or male parent responded when the level of conflict over care increased (the removed partner does not provide any care). The majority of males always reduced their provisioning investment, while females’ decisions depended on the degree of similarity with their partners. Females compensated by provisioning more frequently in pairs of similar personality traits (i.e. accepting a high level of conflict), but reduced their provisioning investment in extremely dissimilar pairs. Our results promote a better understanding of the resolution of sexual conflict over provisioning and highlight the evolutionary significance of mating with similar partners based on certain personality traits.

Aromatic stacking exists widely and plays important roles in protein-ligand interactions. Computational tools to automatically analyze the geometry and accurately calculate the energy of stacking interactions are desired for structure-based drug design. Herein, we employed a Behler-Parrinello neural network (BPNN) to build predictive models for aromatic stacking interactions and further integrated it into an open-source Python package named AromTool for benzene-containing aromatic stacking analysis. Based on extensive testing, AromTool presents desirable precision in comparison to DFT calculations and excellent efficiency for high-throughput aromatic stacking analysis of protein-ligand complexes.

Several machine learning algorithms have been increasingly applied to predict the rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms. We performed the present diagnostic meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate the diagnostic value of machine learning algorithms for assessing the rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms.We systematically searched 3 electronic databases, including Medline (via PubMed), the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials (via Ovid), and Embase (via Elsevier), to retrieve eligible studies from the databases' inception through March 2021. The latest update was performed in June 2021. StataMP, version 14, was used to estimate all pooled diagnostic values.A total of 4 studies involving 6 reports were considered to meet the inclusion criteria. Our diagnostic meta-analysis generated the following pooled diagnostic values: sensitivity, 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75-0.90); specificity, 0.78 (95% CI, 0.68-0.85); positive likelihood ratio, 3.8 (95% CI, 2.4-5.9); negative likelihood ratio, 0.21 (95% CI, 0.12-0.35), diagnostic odd ratio, 18 (95% CI, 7-46), and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.88 (95% CI, 0.85-0.90).Our findings have demonstrated that the diagnostic performance of machine learning algorithms for the rupture risk assessment of AIs is excellent. Considering that the negative effects resulted from the limited number of eligible studies, we suggest developing more well-designed studies with larger sample sizes to validate our findings.

Drylands occupy about 41% of Earth’s land area and are home to more than 2 billion people, at least half of whom are dependent on dryland ecosystem services for their livelihoods and wellbeing. Because drylands are by definition climatically challenged, and because so many peoples’ livelihoods depend on managing these challenges, climate and other environmental changes have the potential to impact dryland inhabitants early. Such impacts affect ecosystems and people in but also beyond drylands, for example where people are forced to migrate.

Digital photography and spectrometry are widely used for colour measurement, but both methods have a number of advantages and disadvantages. Comparative studies can help determine the most appropriate method for quantifying animal colour perception, but few have attempted to compare them based on colour model conversion. Here we compare colour measurements from digital photography and spectrometry in a controlled standard experimental environment using the three-dimensional colour space model CIE L*a*b* which is designed to approximate colour perception in humans and assess the repeatability and agreement of the two methods. For digital photography, we first extracted RGB values from each colour patch and transferred these to L*a*b* values using colour model conversion. For spectrometry, we measured the spectral reflectance (SR) value and subsequently transferred SR values to L*a*b* values. Using a consensus of correlation analysis, intraclass correlation coefficients, concordance correlation coefficients, and Bland-Altman analysis, we found that although spectrometry showed a slightly higher repeatability than photography, both methods were highly repeatable and showed a strong agreement. Furthermore, we used Bland-Altman analysis to derive the limits of agreement, which can be used as criteria for identifying when photography and spectrometry could be as a suitable alternative for measuring colour perception in humans and other trichromatic species. We suggest that our workflow offers a practical and logical approach that could improve how we currently study colour perception in trichromats. Measuring colour efficiently and accurately is necessary for investigating the evolutionary biology of colour perception in animals. Digital photography and spectrometry are two methods widely used for colour measurement, but there are benefits and limitations to using either method. Comparative studies based on colour model conversion are therefore critical for helping researchers determine which method is most appropriate. Here we test the repeatability and agreement of the two measuring methods using standard colour patches, as a comparative case study of broader interest in measuring colour perception in humans and similar primates. Our results demonstrate that both methods are highly repeatable, and the two methods may be used interchangeably to measure colour perception in humans under experimental conditions.

To delineate the nature and origin of a chromosomal aberration detected in a boy with mental retardation.The proband and his parents were subjected to routine G-banded chromosomal karyotyping and single nucleotide polymorphism array (SNP-array) analysis.The karyotype of the proband was determined as 46, XX, add(8)(p23). No karyotypic abnormality was detected in either of his parents. SNP-array has identified a 34.9 Mb duplication at 8p23.1q11.1 and a 6.78 Mb microdeletion at 8p23.1pter in the proband. No copy number variation was detected in either parent.The child was diagnosed with 8p inverted duplication deletion syndrome, which might be induced by non-allelic homologous recombination between olfactory genes in the 8p23.1 region.

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is widespread in animals, especially in lizards (Reptilia: Squamata), and is driven by fecundity selection, male–male competition, or other adaptive hypotheses. However, these selective pressures may vary through different life history periods; thus, it is essential to assess the relationship between growth and SSD. In this study, we tracked SSD dynamics between a “fading‐tail color skink” (blue tail skink whose tail is only blue during its juvenile stage: Plestiodon elegans) and a “nonfade color” tail skink (retains a blue tail throughout life: Plestiodon quadrilineatus) under a controlled experimental environment. We fitted growth curves of morphological traits (body mass, SVL, and TL) using three growth models (Logistic, Gompertz, and von Bertalanffy). We found that both skinks have male‐biased SSD as adults. Body mass has a higher goodness of fit (as represented by very high R 2 values) using the von Bertalanffy model than the other two models. In contrast, SVL and TL for both skinks had higher goodness of fit when using the Gompertz model. Two lizards displayed divergent life history tactics: P. elegans grows faster, matures earlier (at 65 weeks), and presents an allometric growth rate, whereas P. quadrilineatus grows slower, matures later (at 106 weeks), and presents an isometric growth rate. Our findings imply that species‐ and sex‐specific trade‐offs in the allocation of energy to growth and reproduction may cause the growth patterns to diverge, ultimately resulting in the dissimilar patterns of SSD.

Central pancreatectomy (CP) has been applied for treating benign and low-grade malignant tumors in pancreatic neck, but studies regarding CP for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are quite limited. We aimed to investigate the role of central pancreatectomy in the treatment of PDAC in the neck of the pancreas. Patients who underwent CP at our hospital between 2009 and 2016 were identified. Patients treated by distal pancreatectomy (DP) were matched according to the tumor size, location, and staging. The surgical and survival outcomes were compared between the CP and DP groups. Nine patients had CP. Five (56%) had postoperative complications and three (33%) had clinically significant (grade B + C) fistula. No significant difference was found between the CP and DP groups for the rate of overall morbidity, pancreatic fistula, reoperation, and readmission. Tumor size was smaller in the CP group compared to the DP group. The mortality of both groups was zero. The median postoperative survival was similar between the two groups (20.4 months for CP vs 19.4 months for DP, P = 0.842). CP is safe for patients with small PDAC at the neck of the pancreas. Considering the good preservation of pancreatic endocrine and exocrine functions, CP could be considered as an alternative procedure for single small PDAC in pancreatic neck.

Ethambutol(EMB)has been used as first-line antibiotics to treat tuberculosis. Side effects of ethambutol have been well documented since its original use, with the most serious one being optic neuropathy. EMB-induced optic neuropathy(EON)may be reversible in the early stages, but delayed diagnosis has been shown to result in permanent visual loss. Thus the reversibility of EON is dependent on early detection. In this review, we discuss risk factors, detection methods, treatment and prevention of EON.

The current situation of land development intensity control index of container logistics park at home and abroad is analysed, the PENT (politics, economy, society and technology) analysis method is used to analyse the factors influencing the land development intensity control index of container logistics park, and the index system structure of influencing factors is constructed. Finally, index value is obtained quantitatively with the proposed calculation method of the land development intensity index of the port container logistics park. Its practicability is verified in case analysis.

To explore the clinical and genetic characteristics of a child with MEGDEL syndrome.Clinical data of the child was reviewed. Peripheral blood samples of the child and his parents were collected. Mitochondrial genome and the whole exome of the child were analyzed by next-generation sequencing. Candidate variants and its origin were verified by Sanger sequencing and fluorescence quantitative PCR.The patient, a 2-year-and-6-month-old male, has featured hypoglycemia, mental and motor retardation with regression. Cranial MRI showed bilateral putamen damage suggestive of Leigh syndrome. Testing of urine organic acid indicated that the level of 3-methylpentenoic acid was slightly increased. Whole exome sequencing revealed that the child has harbored heterozygous deletion of exons 6 to 17 and c.307AT nonsense variant of the SERAC1 gene, which were respectively inherited from his parents who were asymptomatic. Treatment with Levocarnitine, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, coenzyme Q10, baclofen and glucuronolactone resulted in improvement of sleep and mental state.A case of MEGDEL syndrome without deafness was diagnosed. Discovery of the nonsense mutation and large fragment deletion have enriched the spectrum of SERAC1 gene variants.

Psychiatric disorders are severe, debilitating conditions with unknown etiology and are commonly misdiagnosed, when based solely on clinical interviews, because of overlapping symptoms and similar familial patterns. Until now, no valid and objective biomarkers have been used to diagnose and differentiate between psychiatric disorders. We compared clinically tested serum indicators in terms of inflammation (C-reactive protein, complement proteins C3 and C4, and serum Immunoglobulins A, M, and G), nutrients (homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12), and neurohormones (adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol) in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ, n = 1659), bipolar disorder (BD, n = 1901), and major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 1521) to investigate potential biomarkers. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic potential of these analytes. We found that compared with MDD, serum levels of C-reactive protein, C3, C4, and homocysteine were higher in SCZ and BD groups, and folate and vitamin B12 were lower in SCZ and BD groups. In contrast with BD, adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol increased in patients with MDD. Although ROC analysis suggested that they were not able to effectively distinguish between the three, these biological indicators showed different patterns in the three disorders. As such, more specific biomarkers should be explored in the future.

Endothelium can secrete vasoactive mediators and produce specific extracellular matrix, which contribute jointly to the thromboresistance and regulation of vascular cell behaviors. From a bionic point of view, introducing endothelium‐like functions onto cardiovascular stents represents the most effective means to improve hemocompatibility and reduce late stent restenosis. However, current surface strategies for vascular stents still have limitations, like the lack of multifunctionality, especially the monotony in endothelial‐mimic functions. Herein, a layer‐by‐layer grafting strategy to create endothelium‐like dual‐functional surface on cardiovascular scaffolds is reported. Typically, a nitric oxide (NO, vasoactive mediator)‐generating compound and an endothelial polysaccharide matrix molecule hyaluronan (HA) are sequentially immobilized on allylamine‐plasma‐deposited stents through aqueous amidation. In this case, the stents could be well‐engineered with dual endothelial functions capable of remote and close‐range regulation of the vascular microenvironment. The synergy of NO and endothelial glycocalyx molecules leads to efficient antithrombosis, smooth muscle cell (SMC) inhibition, and perfect endothelial cell (EC)‐compatibility of the stents in vitro. Moreover, the dual‐functional stents show efficient antithrombogenesis ex vivo, rapid endothelialization, and long‐term prevention of restenosis in vivo. Therefore, this study will provide new solutions for not only multicomponent surface functionalization but also the bioengineering of endothelium‐mimic vascular scaffolds with improved clinical outcomes., An endothelium‐mimicking coating NO‐releasing property and grafted glycocalyx molecules on a cardiovascular stent is reported. The dual functions endow the stent with antithrombosis, smooth muscle cell (SMC) inhibition, and endothelial cell (EC)‐compatibility, which result in efficient antithrombogenesis ex vivo, rapid endothelialization, and long‐term prevention of restenosis in vivo.

This article examines the news coverage of a nonmilitary conflict: The US–China trade conflict by major news media outlets in the USA and China using the war and peace journalism framework. Role in the conflict as initiator/responder, medium difference, the press role in each press system, and partisanship of news media were hypothesized to affect the war and peace journalism practice. Moreover, the trade conflict was divided into three stages to test the applicability of the “foreign policy market equilibrium hypothesis” by analyzing the changes in the uses of sources and presence of competing frames over time. US news media were found to employ more war journalism and less peace journalism than their Chinese counterpart. They also had much lower coverage of the conflict than their Chinese counterpart. Newspapers were more likely to use war journalism than television. US partisan liberal media selectively supported and opposed the US government trade policy.
