Biochar has been promoted as a soil amendment that enhances soil quality and agronomic productivity and reduces greenhouse gas production. However, these benefits are not always realized. A major hurdle to the beneficial use of biochar is our limited knowledge regarding the mechanisms directing its effects on soil systems. This project aimed to eliminate some of this uncertainty by examining the biological responses (plant productivity, greenhouse gas production, soil microbial community structure) of a suite of soils (10) to the addition of biochars produced by different processes (pyrolysis, gasification, burning) from a range of feedstocks (corn stalks, hardwood, grass). Results indicated that these three responses were not significantly impacted by the addition of pyrolysis biochars from different feedstocks at 1 and 5% (w/w) addition levels. On the other hand, both an open-air burned corn stalk (5%) and raw corn stalks (1 and 5%) additions did alter the measured soil functionality. For example, the 5% burnt corn stalks addition reduced total above ground plant biomass (∼30%), increased observed N2O production by an order of magnitude, and altered soil bacterial community structure. The bacterial groups that increased in relative abundance in the burnt corn stalks-amended soils included families associated with cellulose decomposition (Chitinophagaceae), plant pathogens (Xanthomonadaceae), and biochar/charcoal-amended media (Gemmatimonadetes). In contrast, the abundance of these bacterial groups was not impacted by the pyrolysis biochars. Therefore, this research suggests that pyrolysis biochar represents a stabilized form of carbon that is resistant to microbial mineralization and has negligible effects on soil biological responses.

Groundwater in karst aquifers constitutes about 25% of drinking water sources globally. Karst aquifers are open systems, susceptible to contamination by surface-borne pollutants. In this study, springs and wells from two karst aquifers in Illinois, USA, were found to contain microplastics and other anthropogenic contaminants. All microplastics were fibers, with a maximum concentration of 15.2 particles/L. The presence of microplastic was consistent with other parameters, including phosphate, chloride and triclosan, suggesting septic effluent as a source. More studies are needed on microplastic sources, abundance, and impacts on karst ecosystems.

Nitrapyrin is a nitrification inhibitor that is co-applied with nitrogen fertilizer in agroecosystems. There is limited information on the fate of nitrapyrin after it is applied to agricultural soils. Over the course of one year (March 2016 to June 2017), 192 water samples from seven streams across Iowa and Illinois were analyzed for nitrapyrin, its metabolite 6‑chloropicolinic acid (6‑CPA), and three widely used herbicides acetochlor, atrazine, and metolachlor. Additional environmental samples were collected and analyzed in spring 2017: 63 water samples from eight subsurface drains in Illinois, and 33 soil samples from a field in Iowa that received direct application of nitrapyrin. Nitrapyrin was detected in all seven streams (56% detection) with concentrations ranging from less than LOD to 1200 ng/L; 6‑CPA was detected in six of the seven streams (13% detection) with concentrations ranging from less than LOD to 13 ng/L. Nitrapyrin was detected in 10% of the subsurface drain samples with concentrations ranging from less than LOD to 12 ng/L; 6‑CPA was detected in six of the eight subsurface drains and in 33% of drain samples with concentrations ranging from less than LOD to 6 ng/L. Nitrapyrin was detected in 67% of the soil samples collected, and concentrations ranged from less than LOD to 42 ng/g. Generally, all three herbicides were detected more frequently and at higher concentrations than nitrapyrin in the streams, subsurface drains, and soils. The environmental fate of nitrapyrin after application is dominated by sorption to soil and off-field transport via leaching and overland flow.

A high performance exfoliated biochar carbon with a layered nanosheet structure was prepared from a low cost agricultural residue (corn cob) via a novel synthesis strategy involving biomass pre-treatment, nitrogen pyrolysis, and a high temperature thermal–chemical flash exfoliation. The exfoliation strategy resulted in porous carbon nanosheets with BET specific surface area of 543.7 m2 g−1, far higher than the 7.9 m2 g−1 of the natural biochar produced without any pre- or post-treatment modifications. The exfoliated material also showed increased oxygen functionality in the form of electrochemically active quinone and pyrone surface groups. This combination of high specific surface area and highly active surface functional groups resulted in very promising capacitive performance, demonstrating a high capacitance of 221 F g−1, over 100 times greater than the natural biochar. The exfoliated biochar electrodes fabricated without any conductive or organic additives showed outstanding high rate capability retaining 78% of their low rate capacitance at a fast 40 A g−1 discharge. This combination of high capacitance and fast charge–discharge capability distinguishes this material from most other high surface area activated carbons; in fact, the electrochemical behaviour more closely resembles that of designer nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. The biochar electrodes were also extremely durable showing only a 3% reduction in capacitance after 5000 successive potential cycles. The exfoliation strategy developed here could provide a novel route for the low cost production of high performance energy storage materials from a variety of waste biomass feedstocks.

Manure-containing water (MCW) is frequently used for agricultural amendment, a practice that introduces natural and synthetic hormones to the environment. Advanced treatment processes are not practical for most animal operations, so inexpensively removing hormones from MCW by capture with vegetable oils was evaluated. Estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (E2) were used as model hormones due to their high biological activity and prevalence in MCW. Eight vegetable-based oils were able to remove >94% of E1 and >87% of E2 from nanopure water (NPW), and tested oils had log10 Koil-water values of 1.96-2.66 for E1 and 1.51-2.47 for E2. System parameters were optimized at 3 min of shaking time and 1:10 corn oil:water (v/v). Removal from real MCW and NPW was assessed at several initial concentrations of E1 and E2. While E1 removal was comparable across all initial concentrations and both water types (>93%), E2 removal exhibited concentration-dependent interaction with MCW matrix. Treatment capacity was assessed by using the same oil for multiple batches of NPW or MCW. After 18 cycles, removal dropped to 50–64% of E1 and 35–37% for E2. Treating MCW with vegetable oils may be a promising approach to inexpensively remove microcontaminants before MCW is used for land application.

Biochar prepared from the pyrolysis of maple wood was studied as supercapacitor electrode materials. Three kinds of electrodes were fabricated: mini-chunk electrodes, thin-film electrodes, and large-disk-chunk electrodes. Their capacitive behaviors were studied using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The mini-chunk supercapacitor shows an electrochemical behavior similar to the supercapacitor using the thin-film electrodes. It exhibits outstanding performance characteristic of a high specific capacitance of approximately 32 F g−1 and a high stability without obvious capacitance decays upon 2,600 potential cycles. This indicates that the mini-chunk supercapacitor can be used as an mF-scale power source for electronic device applications. Moreover, the mini-chunk electrode provides a simple and fast technique to evaluate biochar materials used as potentially high-performance, low-cost, and environmental friendly supercapacitor electrodes without the need of binder and complicated fabrication procedures. However, the supercapacitor using large-disk-chunk biochar electrodes shows lower specific capacitive performance due to the high ohmic resistance stemming from long tubular structures within biochar.

Woody biochar monolith with ultra-high carbon content and highly ordered macropores has been prepared via one-pot pyrolysis and carbonization of red cedar wood at 750 °C without the need of post-treatment. Energy-dispersive spectroscope (EDX) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies show that the original biochar has a carbon content of 98 wt% with oxygen as the only detectable impurity and highly ordered macroporous texture characterized by alternating regular macroporous regions and narrow porous regions. Moreover, the hierarchically porous biochar monolith has a high BET specific surface area of approximately 400 m 2 g −1 . We have studied the monolith material as supercapacitor electrodes under acidic environment using electrochemical and surface characterization techniques. Electrochemical measurements show that the original biochar electrodes have a potential window of about 1.3 V and exhibit typical rectangular-shape voltammetric responses and fast charging–discharging behavior with a gravimetric capacitance of about 14 F g −1 . Simple activation of biochar in diluted nitric acid at room temperature leads to 7 times increase in the capacitance (115 F g −1 ). Because the HNO 3 -activation slightly decreases rather than increases the BET surface area of the biochar, an increase in the coverage of surface oxygen groups is the most likely origin of the substantial capacitance improvement. This is supported by EDX, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman measurements. Preliminary life-time studies show that biochar supercapacitors using the original and HNO 3 -activated electrodes are stable over 5000 cycles without performance decays. These facts indicate that the use of woody biochar is promising for its low cost and it can be a good performance electrode with low environmental impacts for supercapacitor applications.

The changes in the concentrations of Ca, dissolved silica, and alkalinity of the recovery waters of four short-term aquifer thermal energy storage test cycles with respect to the injection waters and the correlation of these concentrations with recovery water temperatures indicate that quartz and calcite dissolved during hot water storage. This hypothesis was supported by chemical equilibrium modeling and mass balance calculations. Magnesium concentrations were lower in recovery waters than in injection waters. Chemical equilibrium modeling indicated that a Mg silicate (talc) could have precipitated. Potassium concentrations correlated well with temperatures, probably because of ion exchange involving potassium feldspars in the aquifer.

An intriguing concept in convexity theory is the characterization of sets having property Pm,n. A set is said to satisfy property Pm,n if for any collection of m arbitrary points at least n of the (m, 2) line segments determined by the points is contained in the given set. Valentine did the initial work with property P3,1, showing that a set with this property could be expressed as the union of 3 or fewer convex sets. This work was extended by Kay and Guay, who worked with the more general property Pm,n _ Convex: sets and graph theory were linked by Guay, and I have sought to continue this work by combining property P m,n and graph theory. A graph G is said to have property P m,n if given any m arbitrary points in G, there are at least n edges joining these points, n < m. The aim of this paper is to present some results which were obtained while seeking to characterize graphs having property P m,n The maximum diameter of a graph having property P m,n, and the minimum number of edges necessary for property P3,1 have been found. In any graph G, property P m,n can be extended to property P m+1, n+1. Finally, a graph can be generated having no star-complete points. There seem to be several other methods for characterizing graphs having property Pm,n, but I did not have time to study them.
