We present a novel multimodal neural network for classifying astronomical sources in multiband ground-based observations, from optical to near infrared, to separate sources in stars, galaxies and quasars. Our approach combines a convolutional neural network branch for learning morphological features from $r$-band images with an artificial neural network branch for extracting spectral energy distribution (SED) information. Specifically, we have used 9-band optical ($ugri$) and NIR ($ZYHJK_s$) data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 5. The two branches of the network are concatenated and feed into fully-connected layers for final classification. We train the network on a spectroscopically confirmed sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey cross-matched with KiDS. The trained model achieves 98.76\% overall accuracy on an independent testing dataset, with F1 scores exceeding 95\% for each class. Raising the output probability threshold, we obtain higher purity at the cost of a lower completeness. We have also validated the network using external catalogs cross-matched with KiDS, correctly classifying 99.74\% of a pure star sample selected from Gaia parallaxes and proper motions, and 99.74\% of an external galaxy sample from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey, adjusted for low-redshift contamination. We apply the trained network to 27,334,751 KiDS DR5 sources with $r \leqslant 23$ mag to generate a new classification catalog. We report on the discovery of a significant and compact over-density of old and metal-poor stars in the KiDS survey (data release 4). The discovery is confirmed by deeper HSC-SSC data revealing the old Main Sequence Turn-Off of a stellar system located at a distance from the sun of $D_{\sun}=145^{+14}_{-13}$~kpc in the direction of the Sextans constellation. The system has absolute integrated magnitude ($M_V=-3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$), half-light radius ($r_h=193^{+61}_{-46}$~pc), and ellipticity ($e=0.46^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$) typical of Ultra Faint Dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The central surface brightness is near the lower limits of known local dwarf galaxies of similar integrated luminosity, as expected for stellar systems that escaped detection until now. The distance of the newly found system suggests that it is likely a satellite of our own Milky Way, consequently, we tentatively baptise it Sextans~II (KiDS-UFD-1)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Large sky spectroscopic surveys have reached the scale of photometric surveys in terms of sample sizes and data complexity. These huge datasets require efficient, accurate, and flexible automated tools for data analysis and science exploitation. We present the Galaxy Spectra Network/GaSNet-II, a supervised multi-network deep learning tool for spectra classification and redshift prediction. GaSNet-II can be trained to identify a customized number of classes and optimize the redshift predictions for classified objects in each of them. It also provides redshift errors, using a network-of-networks that reproduces a Monte Carlo test on each spectrum, by randomizing their weight initialization. As a demonstration of the capability of the deep learning pipeline, we use 260k Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra from Data Release 16, separated into 13 classes including 140k galactic, and 120k extragalactic objects. GaSNet-II achieves 92.4% average classification accuracy over the 13 classes (larger than 90% for the majority of them), and an average redshift error of approximately 0.23% for galaxies and 2.1% for quasars. We further train/test the same pipeline to classify spectra and predict redshifts for a sample of 200k 4MOST mock spectra and 21k publicly released DESI spectra. On 4MOST mock data, we reach 93.4% accuracy in 10-class classification and an average redshift error of 0.55% for galaxies and 0.3% for active galactic nuclei. On DESI data, we reach 96% accuracy in (star/galaxy/quasar only) classification and an average redshift error of 2.8% for galaxies and 4.8% for quasars, despite the small sample size available. GaSNet-II can process ~40k spectra in less than one minute, on a normal Desktop GPU. This makes the pipeline particularly suitable for real-time analyses of Stage-IV survey observations and an ideal tool for feedback loops aimed at night-by-night survey strategy optimization., Comment: 23 pages and 31 figures. During the early stages of galaxy evolution, a significant fraction of galaxies undergo a transitional phase between the ``blue nugget" systems, which arise from the compaction of large, active star-forming disks, and the ``red nuggets", which are red and passive compact galaxies. These objects are typically only observable with space telescopes, and detailed studies of their size, mass, and stellar population parameters have been conducted on relatively small samples. Strong gravitational lensing can offer a new opportunity to study them in detail, even with ground-based observations. In this study, we present the first 6 \textit{bona fide} sample of strongly lensed post-blue nugget (pBN) galaxies, which were discovered in the Kilo Degree Survey. By using the lensing-magnified luminosity from optical and near-infrared bands, we have derived robust structural and stellar population properties of the multiple images of the background sources. \rui{The pBN galaxies have very small sizes of $\rm R_{eff}<1.3$ kpc, high mass density inside 1 kpc of $ \rm \log (\Sigma_1/M_{\odot} \mathrm{kpc}^{-2})>9.3$, and low specific star formation rates of $\log (\mathrm{sSFR/Gyr})\lesssim0$, The size-mass and $\Sigma_1$-mass relations of this sample are consistent with those of the red nuggets, while their sSFR is close to the lower end of compact star-forming blue nugget systems at the same redshift, suggesting a clear evolutionary link between them., Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ

The galaxy total mass inside the effective radius encode important information on the dark matter and galaxy evolution model. Total "central" masses can be inferred via galaxy dynamics or with gravitational lensing, but these methods have limitations. We propose a novel approach, based on Random Forest, to make predictions on the total and dark matter content of galaxies using simple observables from imaging and spectroscopic surveys. We use catalogs of multi-band photometry, sizes, stellar mass, kinematic "measurements" (features) and dark matter (targets) of simulated galaxies, from Illustris-TNG100 hydrodynamical simulation, to train a Mass Estimate machine Learning Algorithm (Mela). We separate the simulated sample in passive early-type galaxies (ETGs), both "normal" and "dwarf", and active late-type galaxies (LTGs) and show that the mass estimator can accurately predict the galaxy dark masses inside the effective radius in all samples. We finally test the mass estimator against the central mass estimates of a series of low redshift (z$\leq$0.1) datasets, including SPIDER, MaNGA/DynPop and SAMI dwarf galaxies, derived with standard dynamical methods based on Jeans equations. Dynamical masses are reproduced within 0.30 dex ($\sim2\sigma$), with a limited fraction of outliers and almost no bias. This is independent of the sophistication of the kinematical data collected (fiber vs. 3D spectroscopy) and the dynamical analysis adopted (radial vs. axisymmetric Jeans equations, virial theorem). This makes Mela a powerful alternative to predict the mass of galaxies of massive stage-IV surveys' datasets.

We compare the structural properties and dark matter content of star-forming galaxies taken from the CAMELS cosmological simulations to the observed trends derived from the SPARC sample in the stellar mass range $[10^{9}, 10^{11}]\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$, to provide constraints on the value of cosmological and astrophysical (SN- and AGN-related) parameters. We consider the size-, internal DM fraction-, internal DM mass- and total-stellar mass relations for all the 1065 simulations from the IllustrisTNG, SIMBA and ASTRID suites of CAMELS, and search for the parameters that minimize the $\chi^{2}$ with respect to the observations. For the IllustrisTNG suite, we find the following constraints for the cosmological parameters: $\Omega_{\textrm{m}} = 0.27_{-0.05}^{+0.01}$, $\sigma_{8} = 0.83_{-0.11}^{+0.08}$ and $S_{8} = 0.78_{-0.09}^{+0.03}$, which are consistent within $1\sigma$ with the results from the nine-year WMAP observations. SN feedback-related astrophysical parameters, which describe the departure of outflow wind energy per unit star formation rate and wind velocity from the reference IllustrisTNG simulations, assume the following values: $A_{\textrm{SN1}} = 0.48_{-0.16}^{+0.25}$ and $A_{\textrm{SN2}} = 1.21_{-0.34}^{+0.03}$, respectively. Therefore, simulations with a lower value of outflow wind energy per unit star formation rate with respect to the reference illustrisTNG simulation better reproduce the observations. Simulations based on SIMBA and ASTRID suites predict central dark matter masses substantially larger than those observed in real galaxies, which can be reconciled with observations only by requiring values of $\Omega_{\textrm{m}}$ inconsistent with cosmological constraints for SIMBA, or simulations characterized by unrealistic galaxy mass distributions for ASTRID., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables. The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) is currently the only sky survey providing optical ($ugri$) plus near-infrared (NIR, $ZYHJK_S$) seeing matched photometry over an area larger than 1000 $\rm deg^2$. This is obtained by incorporating the NIR data from the VISTA Kilo Degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, covering the same KiDS footprint. As such, the KiDS multi-wavelength photometry represents a unique dataset to test the ability of stellar population models to return robust photometric stellar mass ($M_*$) and star-formation rate (SFR) estimates. Here we use a spectroscopic sample of galaxies for which we possess $u g r i Z Y J H K_s$ ``gaussianized'' magnitudes from KiDS data release 4. We fit the spectral energy distribution from the 9-band photometry using: 1) three different popular libraries of stellar {population} templates, 2) single burst, simple and delayed exponential star-formation history models, and 3) a wide range of priors on age and metallicity. As template fitting codes we use two popular softwares: LePhare and CIGALE. We investigate the variance of the stellar masses and the star-formation rates from the different combinations of templates, star formation recipes and codes to assess the stability of these estimates and define some ``robust'' median quantities to be included in the upcoming KiDS data releases. As a science validation test, we derive the mass function, the star formation rate function, and the SFR-$M_*$ relation for a low-redshift ($z<0.5$) sample of galaxies, that result in excellent agreement with previous literature data. The final catalog, containing $\sim290\,000$ galaxies with redshift $0.01

Bulge-disk (B-D) decomposition is an effective diagnostic to characterize the galaxy morphology and understand its evolution across time. So far, high-quality data have allowed detailed B-D decomposition to redshift below 0.5, with limited excursions over small volumes at higher redshifts. Next-generation large sky space surveys in optical, e.g. from the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), and near-infrared, e.g. from the space EUCLID mission, will produce a gigantic leap in these studies as they will provide deep, high-quality photometric images over more than 15000 deg2 of the sky, including billions of galaxies. Here, we extend the use of the Galaxy Light profile neural Network (GaLNet) to predict 2-S\'ersic model parameters, specifically from CSST data. We simulate point-spread function (PSF) convolved galaxies, with realistic B-D parameter distributions, on CSST mock observations to train the new GaLNet and predict the structural parameters (e.g. magnitude, effective radius, Sersic index, axis ratio, etc.) of both bulge and disk components. We find that the GaLNet can achieve very good accuracy for most of the B-D parameters down to an $r$-band magnitude of 23.5 and redshift $\sim$1. The best accuracy is obtained for magnitudes, implying accurate bulge-to-total (B/T) estimates. To further forecast the CSST performances, we also discuss the results of the 1-S\'ersic GaLNet and show that CSST half-depth data will allow us to derive accurate 1-component models up to $r\sim$24 and redshift z$\sim$1.7.

[Abridged] Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally-bound systems in the universe and are widely considered to be an effective cosmological probe. We propose the first Machine Learning method using galaxy cluster properties to derive unbiased constraints on a set of cosmological parameters, including Omega_m, sigma_8, Omega_b, and h_0. We train the machine learning model with mock catalogs including "measured" quantities from Magneticum multi-cosmology hydrodynamical simulations, like gas mass, gas bolometric luminosity, gas temperature, stellar mass, cluster radius, total mass, velocity dispersion, and redshift, and correctly predict all parameters with uncertainties of the order of ~14% for Omega_m, ~8% for sigma_8, ~6% for Omega_b, and ~3% for h_0. This first test is exceptionally promising, as it shows that machine learning can efficiently map the correlations in the multi-dimensional space of the observed quantities to the cosmological parameter space and narrow down the probability that a given sample belongs to a given cosmological parameter combination. In the future, these ML tools can be applied to cluster samples with multi-wavelength observations from surveys like LSST, CSST, Euclid, Roman in optical and near-infrared bands, and eROSITA in X-rays, to constrain both the cosmology and the effect of the baryonic feedback., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures. The unprecedented number of gravitational lenses expected from new-generation facilities such as the ESA Euclid telescope and the Vera Rubin Observatory makes it crucial to rethink our classical approach to lens-modelling. In this paper, we present LeMoN (Lens Modelling with Neural networks): a new machine-learning algorithm able to analyse hundreds of thousands of gravitational lenses in a reasonable amount of time. The algorithm is based on a Bayesian Neural Network: a new generation of neural networks able to associate a reliable confidence interval to each predicted parameter. We train the algorithm to predict the three main parameters of the Singular Isothermal Ellipsoid model (the Einstein radius and the two components of the ellipticity) by employing two simulated datasets built to resemble the imaging capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming Euclid satellite. In this work, we assess the accuracy of the algorithm and the reliability of the estimated uncertainties by applying the network to several simulated datasets of 10.000 images each. We obtain accuracies comparable to previous studies present in the current literature and an average modelling time of just 0.5s per lens. Finally, we apply the LeMoN algorithm to a pilot dataset of real lenses observed with HST during the SLACS program, obtaining unbiased estimates of their SIE parameters. We explore the kinematic scaling relations of 38 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster using observations from the SAMI integral field spectrograph. We focus on the Fundamental Plane (FP), defined by the physical properties of the objects (scale length, surface brightness and velocity dispersion) and the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, where surface brightness is replaced by stellar mass, and investigate their dynamical-to-stellar-mass ratio. We confirm earlier results that the Fornax dEs are significantly offset above the FP defined by massive, hot stellar systems. For the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, which shows much lower scatter, we find that young and old dwarf galaxies lie at about the same distance from the plane, all with comparable scatter. We introduce the perpendicular deviation of dwarf galaxies from the Stellar Mass Plane defined by giant early-types as a robust estimate of their DM fraction, and find that the faintest dwarfs are systematically offset above the plane, implying that they have a higher dark matter fraction. This result is confirmed when estimating the dynamical mass of our dEs using a virial mass estimator, tracing the onset of dark matter domination in low mass stellar systems. We find that the position of our galaxies on the Stellar Mass FP agrees with the galaxies in the Local Group. This seems to imply that the processes determining the position of dwarf galaxies on the FP depend on the environment in the same way, whether the galaxy is situated in the Local Group or in the Fornax Cluster., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The multi-band photometry of the VOICE imaging data, overlapping with 4.9 deg$^2$ of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) area, enables both shape measurement and photometric redshift estimation to be the two essential quantities for weak lensing analysis. The depth of $mag_{AB}$ is up to 26.1 (5$\sigma$ limiting) in $r$-band. We estimate the Excess Surface Density (ESD; $\Delta\Sigma$) based on galaxy-galaxy measurements around galaxies at lower redshift (0.10<$z_l$<0.35) while we select the background sources to be at higher redshift ranging from 0.3 to 1.5. The foreground galaxies are divided into two major categories according to their colour (blue/red), each of which has been further divided into high/low stellar mass bins. Then the halo masses of the samples are estimated by modelling the signals, and the posterior of the parameters are samples via Mote Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) process. We compare our results with the existing Stellar-to-Halo Mass Relation (SHMR) and find that the blue low stellar mass bin (median $M_*=10^{8.31}M_\odot$) deviates from the SHMR relation whereas all other three samples agrees well with empirical curves. We interpret this discrepancy as the effect of a low star formation efficiency of the low-mass blue dwarf galaxy population dominated in the VOICE-CDFS area., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, submitted to A&A

The star formation history (SFH) of galaxies is critical for understanding galaxy evolution. Hydrodynamical simulations enable us to precisely reconstruct the SFH of galaxies and establish a link to the underlying physical processes. In this work, we present a model to describe individual galaxies' SFHs from three simulations: TheThreeHundred, Illustris-1 and TNG100-1. This model divides the galaxy SFH into two distinct components: the "main sequence" and the "variation". The "main sequence" part is generated by tracing the history of the $SFR-M_*$ main sequence of galaxies across time. The "variation" part consists of the scatter around the main sequence, which is reproduced by fractional Brownian motions. We find that: 1) The evolution of the main sequence varies between simulations; 2) fractional Brownian motions can reproduce many features of SFHs, however, discrepancies still exist; 3) The variations and mass-loss rate are crucial for reconstructing the SFHs of the simulations. This model provides a fair description of the SFHs in simulations. On the other hand, by correlating the fractional Brownian motion model to simulation data, we provide a 'standard' against which to compare simulations., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

In the era of large sky surveys, photometric redshifts (photo-z) represent crucial information for galaxy evolution and cosmology studies. In this work, we propose a new Machine Learning (ML) tool called Galaxy morphoto-Z with neural Networks (GaZNet-1), which uses both images and multi-band photometry measurements to predict galaxy redshifts, with accuracy, precision and outlier fraction superior to standard methods based on photometry only. As a first application of this tool, we estimate photo-z of a sample of galaxies in the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). GaZNet-1 is trained and tested on $\sim140 000$ galaxies collected from KiDS Data Release 4 (DR4), for which spectroscopic redshifts are available from different surveys. This sample is dominated by bright (MAG$\_$AUTO$<21$) and low redshift ($z < 0.8$) systems, however, we could use $\sim$ 6500 galaxies in the range $0.8 < z < 3$ to effectively extend the training to higher redshift. The inputs are the r-band galaxy images plus the 9-band magnitudes and colours, from the combined catalogs of optical photometry from KiDS and near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared survey. By combining the images and catalogs, GaZNet-1 can achieve extremely high precision in normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD=0.014 for lower redshift and NMAD=0.041 for higher redshift galaxies) and low fraction of outliers ($0.4$\% for lower and $1.27$\% for higher redshift galaxies). Compared to ML codes using only photometry as input, GaZNet-1 also shows a $\sim 10-35$% improvement in precision at different redshifts and a $\sim$ 45% reduction in the fraction of outliers. We finally discuss that, by correctly separating galaxies from stars and active galactic nuclei, the overall photo-z outlier fraction of galaxies can be cut down to $0.3$\%., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z<0.25) galaxy population. DR4 includes 32 value-added tables or Data Management Units (DMUs) that provide a number of measured and derived data products including GALEX, ESO KiDS, ESO VIKING, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory imaging. Within this release, we provide visual morphologies for 15330 galaxies to z<0.08, photometric redshift estimates for all 18million objects to r_KIDS~25mag, and stellar velocity dispersions for 111830 galaxies. We conclude by deriving the total galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) and its sub-division by morphological class (elliptical, compact-bulge and disc, diffuse-bulge and disc, and disc only). This extends our previous measurement of the total GSMF down to 10^6.75 M_sol h^-2_70 and we find a total stellar mass density of rho_*=(2.97+/-0.04)x10^8 M_sol h_70 Mpc^-3 or Omega_*=(2.17+/-0.03)x10^-3 h^-1_70. We conclude that at z<0.1, the Universe has converted 4.9+/-0.1 per cent of the baryonic mass implied by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis into stars that are gravitationally bound within the galaxy population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. With the advent of new spectroscopic surveys from ground and space, observing up to hundreds of millions of galaxies, spectra classification will become overwhelming for standard analysis techniques. To prepare for this challenge, we introduce a family of deep learning tools to classify features in one-dimensional spectra. As the first application of these Galaxy Spectra neural Networks (GaSNets), we focus on tools specialized at identifying emission lines from strongly lensed star-forming galaxies in the eBOSS spectra. We first discuss the training and testing of these networks and define a threshold probability, PL, of 95% for the high quality event detection. Then, using a previous set of spectroscopically selected strong lenses from eBOSS, confirmed with HST, we estimate a completeness of ~80% as the fraction of lenses recovered above the adopted PL. We finally apply the GaSNets to ~1.3M spectra to collect a first list of ~430 new high quality candidates identified with deep learning applied to spectroscopy and visually graded as highly probable real events. A preliminary check against ground-based observations tentatively shows that this sample has a confirmation rate of 38%, in line with previous samples selected with standard (no deep learning) classification tools and follow-up by Hubble Space Telescope. This first test shows that machine learning can be efficiently extended to feature recognition in the wavelength space, which will be crucial for future surveys like 4MOST, DESI, Euclid, and the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST)., Comment: Submitted to RAA, 33 pages,21 figures. Dark matter (DM) is predicted to be the dominant mass component in galaxies. In the central region of Early-type galaxies it is expected to account for a large amount of the total mass, although the stellar mass should still represent the majority of the mass budget, depending on the stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF). We discuss latest results on the DM fraction and mean DM density for local galaxies and explore their evolution with redshifts in the last 8 Gyr of the cosmic history. We compare these results with expectations from the $\Lambda$CDM model, and discuss the the role of the IMF and galaxy model, through the central total mass density slope. Next-generation surveys will provide photometric and spectroscopic data of millions to billions of galaxies with unprecedented precision. This offers a unique chance to improve our understanding of the galaxy evolution and the unresolved nature of dark matter (DM). At galaxy scales, the density distribution of DM is strongly affected by the astrophysical feedback processes, which are difficult to fully account for in classical techniques to derive mass models. In this work, we explore the capability of supervised learning algorithms to predict the DM content of galaxies from luminous observational-like parameters, using the public catalog of the TNG100 simulation. In particular, we use Photometric, Structural and Kinematic parameters to predict the total DM mass, DM half-mass radius, DM mass inside one and two stellar half-mass radii. We adopt the coefficient of determination, $R^2$, as a reference metric to evaluate the accuracy of these predictions. We find that the Photometric features alone are able to predict the total DM mass with fair accuracy, while Structural and Photometric features together are more effective to determine the DM inside the stellar half mass radius, and the DM within twice the stellar half mass radius. However, using all observational quantities together (Photometry, Structural and Kinematics) incredibly improves the overall accuracy for all DM quantities. This first test shows that Machine Learning tools are promising approaches to derive predictions of the DM in real galaxies. The next steps will be to improve observational realism of the training sets, by closely select samples which accurately reproduce the typical observed luminous scaling relations. Context. The assembly history of the stellar component of a massive elliptical galaxy is closely related to that of its dark matter halo. Measuring how the properties of galaxies correlate with their halo mass can help understand their evolution. Aims. We investigate how the dark matter halo mass of elliptical galaxies varies as a function of their properties, using weak gravitational lensing observations. To minimise the chances of biases, we focus on galaxy properties that can be determined robustly: the surface brightness profile and the colour. Methods. We selected 2409 central massive elliptical galaxies from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We first measured their surface brightness profile and colours by fitting Sersic models to photometric data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). We fitted their halo mass distribution as a function of redshift, rest-frame $r-$band luminosity, half-light radius and rest-frame $u-g$ colour, using KiDS weak lensing data and a Bayesian hierarchical approach. For the sake of robustness to assumptions on the large-radii behaviour of the surface brightness, we repeated the analysis replacing total luminosity and half-light radius with the luminosity within a 10~kpc aperture, $L_{r,10}$, and the light-weighted surface brightness slope, $\Gamma_{10}$. Results. We did not detect any correlation between halo mass and either half-light radius or colour, at fixed redshift and luminosity. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the average star formation efficiency of massive elliptical galaxies has little dependence on their final size or colour. Gravitational wave signal from the inspiral of stellar-mass binary black hole can be used as standard sirens to perform cosmological inference. This inspiral covers a wide range of frequency bands, from the millihertz band to the audio-band, allowing for detections by both space-borne and ground-based gravitational wave detectors. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive study on the ability to constrain the Hubble constant using the dark standard sirens, or gravitational wave events that lack electromagnetic counterparts. To acquire the redshift information, we weight the galaxies within the localization error box with photometric information from several bands and use them as a proxy for the binary black hole redshift. We discover that TianQin is expected to constrain the Hubble constant to a precision of roughly $30\%$ through detections of $10$ gravitational wave events; in the most optimistic case, the Hubble constant can be constrained to a precision of $< 10 \%$, assuming TianQin I+II. In the optimistic case, the multi-detector network of TianQin and LISA is capable of constraining the Hubble constant to within $5\%$ precision. It is worth highlighting that the multi-band network of TianQin and Einstein Telescope is capable of constraining the Hubble constant to a precision of about $1\%$. We conclude that inferring the Hubble constant without bias from photo-z galaxy catalog is achievable, and we also demonstrate self-consistency using the P$-$P plot. The Fornax cluster provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate in detail the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in a dense environment. We aim at kinematically characterizing photometrically detected globular cluster (GC) candidates in the core of the cluster. We used the VLT/VIMOS spectroscopic data from the FVSS survey in the Fornax cluster, covering one square degree around the central massive galaxy NGC 1399. We confirmed a total of 777 GCs, almost doubling the previously detected GCs, using the same dataset by Pota et al. (2018). Combined with previous literature radial velocity measurements of GCs in Fornax, we compiled the most extensive spectroscopic GC sample of 2341 objects in this environment. We found that red GCs are mostly concentrated around major galaxies, while blue GCs are kinematically irregular and are widely spread throughout the core region of the cluster. The velocity dispersion profiles of blue and red GCs show a quite distinct behaviour. Blue GCs exhibit a sharp increase in the velocity dispersion profile from 250 to 400km/s within 5 arcminutes (29 kpc/1 reff of NGC 1399) from the central galaxy. The velocity dispersion profile of red GCs follows a constant value in between 200-300km/s until 8 arcminutes (46 kpc/1.6reff), and then rises to 350km/s at 10 arcminutes (58 kpc/2 reff). Beyond 10 arcminutes and out to 40 arcminutes (230 kpc/8 reff), blue and red GCs show a constant velocity dispersion of 300+/-50km/s, indicating that both GC populations are tracing the cluster potential. We have kinematically confirmed and characterized the previously photometrically discovered overdensities of intra-cluster GCs. We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that the measured RAR agrees well with the MG predictions. In addition, we find a difference of at least $6\sigma$ between the RARs of early- and late-type galaxies (split by S\'{e}rsic index and $u-r$ colour) with the same stellar mass. Current MG theories involve a gravity modification that is independent of other galaxy properties, which would be unable to explain this behaviour. The difference might be explained if only the early-type galaxies have significant ($M_{gas} \approx M_*$) circumgalactic gaseous haloes. The observed behaviour is also expected in $\Lambda$CDM models where the galaxy-to-halo mass relation depends on the galaxy formation history. We find that MICE, a $\Lambda$CDM simulation with hybrid halo occupation distribution modelling and abundance matching, reproduces the observed RAR but significantly differs from BAHAMAS, a hydrodynamical cosmological galaxy formation simulation. Our results are sensitive to the amount of circumgalactic gas; current observational constraints indicate that the resulting corrections are likely moderate. The VST Early-type GAlaxy Survey (VEGAS) is a deep, multi-band (u, g, r, i) imaging survey, carried out with the 2.6-metre VLT Survey Telescope (VST) at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. VEGAS combines the wide (1-square-degree) OmegaCAM imager and long integration times, together with a specially designed observing strategy. It has proven to be a gold mine for studies of features at very low surface brightness, down to levels of mu_g~27-30 magnitudes arcsec^(-2), over 5-8 magnitudes fainter than the dark sky at Paranal. We present a sample of 16 likely strong gravitational lenses identified in the VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields (VOICE survey) using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We train two different CNNs on composite images produced by superimposing simulated gravitational arcs on real Luminous Red Galaxies observed in VOICE. Specifically, the first CNN is trained on single-band images and more easily identifies systems with large Einstein radii, while the second one, trained on composite RGB images, is more accurate in retrieving systems with smaller Einstein radii. We apply both networks to real data from the VOICE survey, taking advantage of the high limiting magnitude (26.1 in the r-band) and low PSF FWHM (0.8" in the r-band) of this deep survey. We analyse $\sim21,200$ images with $mag_r<21.5$, identifying 257 lens candidates. To retrieve a high-confidence sample and to assess the accuracy of our technique, nine of the authors perform a visual inspection. Roughly 75% of the systems are classified as likely lenses by at least one of the authors. Finally, we assemble the LIVE sample (Lenses In VoicE) composed by the 16 systems passing the chosen grading threshold. Three of these candidates show likely lensing features when observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. This work represents a further confirmation of the ability of CNNs to inspect large samples of galaxies searching for gravitational lenses. The W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 fields will be two of the LSST Deep Drilling fields, but the availability of spectroscopic redshifts within these two fields is still limited on deg^2 scales. To prepare for future science, we use EAZY to estimate photometric redshifts (photo-zs) in these two fields based on forced-photometry catalogs. Our photo-z catalog consists of ~0.8 million sources covering 4.9 deg^2 in W-CDF-S and ~0.8 million sources covering 3.4 deg^2 in ELAIS-S1, among which there are ~0.6 (W-CDF-S) and ~0.4 (ELAIS-S1) million sources having signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) > 5 detections in more than 5 bands. By comparing photo-zs and available spectroscopic redshifts, we demonstrate the general reliability of our photo-z measurements. The ELAIS-S1 field will be an LSST Deep Drilling field, and it also has extensive multiwavelength coverage. To improve the utility of the existing data, we use The Tractor to perform forced-photometry measurements in this field. We compile data in 16 bands from the DeepDrill, VIDEO, DES, ESIS, and VOICE surveys. Using a priori information from the high-resolution fiducial images in VIDEO, we model the images in other bands and generate a forced-photometry catalog. This technique enables consistency throughout different surveys, deblends sources from low-resolution images, extends photometric measurements to a fainter magnitude regime, and improves photometric-redshift estimates. A catalogue of galaxy clusters was obtained in an area of 414 sq deg up to a redshift $z\sim0.8$ from the Data Release 3 of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-DR3), using the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) algorithm. The catalogue and the calibration of the richness-mass relation were presented in two companion papers. Here we describe the selection of the cluster central galaxy and the classification of blue and red cluster members, and analyze the main cluster properties, such as the red/blue fraction, cluster mass, brightness and stellar mass of the central galaxy, and their dependence on redshift and cluster richness. We use the Illustris-TNG simulation, which represents the state-of-the-art cosmological simulation of galaxy formation, as a benchmark for the interpretation of the results. A good agreement with simulations is found at low redshifts ($z \le 0.4$), while at higher redshifts the simulations indicate a lower fraction of blue galaxies than what found in the KiDS-AMICO catalogue: we argue that this may be due to an underestimate of star-forming galaxies in the simulations. The selection of clusters with a larger magnitude difference between the two brightest central galaxies, which may indicate a more relaxed cluster dynamical status, improves the agreement between the observed and simulated cluster mass and stellar mass of the central galaxy. We present a joint cosmological analysis of weak gravitational lensing observations from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), with redshift-space galaxy clustering observations from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing observations from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS). This combination of large-scale structure probes breaks the degeneracies between cosmological parameters for individual observables, resulting in a constraint on the structure growth parameter $S_8=\sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3} = 0.766^{+0.020}_{-0.014}$, that has the same overall precision as that reported by the full-sky cosmic microwave background observations from Planck. The recovered $S_8$ amplitude is low, however, by $8.3 \pm 2.6$ % relative to Planck. This result builds from a series of KiDS-1000 analyses where we validate our methodology with variable depth mock galaxy surveys, our lensing calibration with image simulations and null-tests, and our optical-to-near-infrared redshift calibration with multi-band mock catalogues and a spectroscopic-photometric clustering analysis. The systematic uncertainties identified by these analyses are folded through as nuisance parameters in our cosmological analysis. Inspecting the offset between the marginalised posterior distributions, we find that the $S_8$-difference with Planck is driven by a tension in the matter fluctuation amplitude parameter, $\sigma_8$. We quantify the level of agreement between the CMB and our large-scale structure constraints using a series of different metrics, finding differences with a significance ranging between $\sim\! 3\,\sigma$, when considering the offset in $S_{8}$, and $\sim\! 2\,\sigma$, when considering the full multi-dimensional parameter space., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, A&A accepted, including a new appendix on Intrinsic Alignments. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) is a major facility to carry out spectroscopic surveys for cosmology and galaxy evolution studies. The seventh data release of the LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Survey (LEGAS) is currently available and including redshifts of 193\,361 galaxies. These sources are spread over $\sim 11\,500$ deg$^2$ of the sky, largely overlapping with other imaging (SDSS, HSC) and spectroscopic (BOSS) surveys. The estimated depth of the galaxy sample, $r\sim17.8$, the high signal-to-noise ratio, and the spectral resolution $R=1800$, make the LAMOST spectra suitable for galaxy velocity dispersion measurements, which are invaluable to study the structure and formation of galaxies and to determine their central dark matter (DM) content. We present the first estimates of central velocity dispersion of $\sim86\,000$ galaxies in LAMOST footprint. We have used a wrap-up procedure to perform the spectral fitting using \textsc{pPXF}, and derive velocity dispersion measurements. Statistical errors are also assessed by comparing LAMOST velocity dispersion estimates with the ones of SDSS and BOSS over a common sample of $\sim51\,000$ galaxies. The two datasets show a good agreement, within the statistical errors, in particular when velocity dispersion values are corrected to 1 effective radius aperture. We also present a preliminary Mass-$\sigma$ relation and find consistency with previous analyses based on local galaxy samples. These first results suggest that LAMOST spectra are suitable for galaxy velocity dispersion measurements to complement the available catalogs of galaxy internal kinematics in the northern hemisphere. The Probability Density Function (PDF) provides an estimate of the photometric redshift (zphot) prediction error. It is crucial for current and future sky surveys, characterized by strict requirements on the zphot precision, reliability and completeness. The present work stands on the assumption that properly defined rejection criteria, capable of identifying and rejecting potential outliers, can increase the precision of zphot estimates and of their cumulative PDF, without sacrificing much in terms of completeness of the sample. We provide a way to assess rejection through proper cuts on the shape descriptors of a PDF, such as the width and the height of the maximum PDF's peak. In this work we tested these rejection criteria to galaxies with photometry extracted from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) ESO Data Release 4, proving that such approach could lead to significant improvements to the zphot quality: e.g., for the clipped sample showing the best trade-off between precision and completeness, we achieve a reduction in outliers fraction of $\simeq 75\%$ and an improvement of $\simeq 6\%$ for NMAD, with respect to the original data set, preserving the $\simeq 93\%$ of its content., Comment: Preprint version of the manuscript to appear in the Volume "Intelligent Astrophysics" of the series "Emergence, Complexity and Computation", Book eds. We present weak lensing shear catalogues from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, spanning 1006 square degrees of deep and high-resolution imaging. Our `gold-sample' of galaxies, with well-calibrated photometric redshift distributions, consists of 21 million galaxies with an effective number density of $6.17$ galaxies per square arcminute. We quantify the accuracy of the spatial, temporal, and flux-dependent point-spread function (PSF) model, verifying that the model meets our requirements to induce less than a $0.1\sigma$ change in the inferred cosmic shear constraints on the clustering cosmological parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$. Through a series of two-point null-tests, we validate the shear estimates, finding no evidence for significant non-lensing B-mode distortions in the data. The PSF residuals are detected in the highest-redshift bins, originating from object selection and/or weight bias. The amplitude is, however, shown to be sufficiently low and within our stringent requirements. With a shear-ratio null-test, we verify the expected redshift scaling of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around luminous red galaxies. Several semi-analytic models (SAMs) try to explain how galaxies form, evolve and interact inside the dark matter large-scale structure. These SAMs can be tested by comparing their predictions for galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L), which is weak gravitational lensing around galaxy pairs, with observations. We evaluate the SAMs by Henriques et al. (2015; H15) and by Lagos et al. (2012; L12), implemented in the Millennium Run, by comparing their predictions for G3L to observations at smaller scales than previous studies and also for pairs of lens galaxies from different populations. We compare the G3L signal predicted by the SAMs to measurements in the overlap of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy survey (VIKING), splitting lens galaxies into two colour and five stellar-mass samples. Using an improved G3L estimator, we measure the three-point correlation of the matter distribution for mixed lens pairs with galaxies from different samples, and unmixed lens pairs with galaxies from the same sample. Predictions by the H15 SAM agree with the observations for all colour-selected and all but one stellar-mass-selected sample with 95% confidence. Deviations occur for lenses with stellar masses below $9.5h^{-2}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ at scales below $0.2h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$. Predictions by the L12 SAM for stellar-mass selected samples and red galaxies are significantly higher than observed, while the predicted signal for blue galaxy pairs is too low. The L12 SAM predicts more pairs of small stellar-mass and red galaxies than the H15 SAM and the observations, as well as fewer pairs of blue galaxies. Likely explanations are different treatments of environmental effects by the SAMs and different models of the initial mass function. Ultra-compact massive galaxies UCMGs, i.e. galaxies with stellar masses $M_{*} > 8 \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ and effective radii $R_{e} < 1.5$ kpc, are very rare systems, in particular at low and intermediate redshifts. Their origin as well as their number density across cosmic time are still under scrutiny, especially because of the paucity of spectroscopically confirmed samples. We have started a systematic census of UCMG candidates within the ESO Kilo Degree Survey, together with a large spectroscopic follow-up campaign to build the largest possible sample of confirmed UCMGs. This is the third paper of the series and the second based on the spectroscopic follow-up program. Here, we present photometrical and structural parameters of 33 new candidates at redshifts $0.15 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.5$ and confirm 19 of them as UCMGs, based on their nominal spectroscopically inferred $M_{*}$ and $R_{e}$. This corresponds to a success rate of $\sim 58\%$, nicely consistent with our previous findings. The addition of these 19 newly confirmed objects, allows us to fully assess the systematics on the system selection, and finally reduce the number density uncertainties. Moreover, putting together the results from our current and past observational campaigns and some literature data, we build the largest sample of UCMGs ever collected, comprising 92 spectroscopically confirmed objects at $0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.5$. This number raises to 116, allowing for a $3\sigma$ tolerance on the $M_{*}$ and $R_{e}$ thresholds for the UCMG definition. For all these galaxies we have estimated the velocity dispersion values at the effective radii which have been used to derive a preliminary mass-velocity dispersion correlation.

The KiDS Strongly lensed QUAsar Detection project (KiDS-SQuaD) aims at finding as many previously undiscovered gravitational lensed quasars as possible in the Kilo Degree Survey. This is the second paper of this series where we present a new, automatic object classification method based on machine learning technique. The main goal of this paper is to build a catalogue of bright extragalactic objects (galaxies and quasars), from the KiDS Data Release 4, with a minimum stellar contamination, preserving the completeness as much as possible, to then apply morphological methods to select reliable gravitationally lensed (GL) quasar candidates. After testing some of the most used machine learning algorithms, decision trees based classifiers, we decided to use CatBoost, that was specifically trained with the aim of creating a sample of extragalactic sources as clean as possible from stars. We discuss the input data, define the training sample for the classifier, give quantitative estimates of its performances, and finally describe the validation results with Gaia DR2, AllWISE, and GAMA catalogues. We have built and make available to the scientific community the KiDS Bright EXtraGalactic Objects catalogue (KiDS-BEXGO), specifically created to find gravitational lenses. This is made of $\approx6$ millions of sources classified as quasars ($\approx 200\,000$) and galaxies ($\approx 5.7$M), up to $r<22^m$. From this catalog we selected 'Multiplets': close pairs of quasars or galaxies surrounded by at least one quasar, presenting the 12 most reliable gravitationally lensed quasar candidates, to demonstrate the potential of the catalogue, which will be further explored in a forthcoming paper. Intrinsic galaxy alignments are a source of bias for weak lensing measurements as well as a tool for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we measure the alignment of shapes of satellite galaxies, in galaxy groups, with respect to the brightest group galaxy (BGG), as well as alignments of the BGG shape with the satellite positions, using the highly complete Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey and deep imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey. We control systematic errors with dedicated image simulations and measure accurate shapes using the DEIMOS shape measurement method. We find a significant satellite radial alignment signal, which vanishes at large separations from the BGG. We do not identify any strong trends of the signal with galaxy absolute magnitude or group mass. The alignment signal is dominated by red satellites. We also find that the outer regions of galaxies are aligned more strongly than their inner regions, by varying the radial weight employed during the shape measurement process. This behaviour is evident for both red and blue satellites. BGGs are also found to be aligned with satellite positions, with this alignment being stronger when considering the innermost satellites, using red BGGs and the shape of the outer region of the BGG. Lastly, we measure the global intrinsic alignment signal in the GAMA sample for two different radial weight functions and find no significant difference., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The halo masses $M_{halo}$ of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are critical measurements for understanding their formation processes. One promising method to estimate a galaxy's $M_{halo}$ is to exploit the empirical scaling relation between $M_{halo}$ and the number of associated globular clusters ($N_{\mathrm{GC}}$). We use a Bayesian mixture model approach to measure $N_{\mathrm{GC}}$ for 175 LSB ($23\leq\left\langle \mu_{e,r} \right\rangle [\mathrm{mag\ arcsec}^{-2}]\leq 28$) galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) data; this is the largest sample of low mass galaxies so-far analysed for this kind of study. The proximity of the Fornax cluster means that we can measure galaxies with much smaller physical sizes ($0.3\leq r_{e,r}\ [\mathrm{kpc}]\leq 9.5$) compared to previous studies of the GC systems of LSB galaxies, probing stellar masses down to $M_{*}\sim10^{5}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. The sample also includes \nudg\ ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), with projected $r$-band half-light radii greater than 1.5 kpc. Our results are consistent with an extrapolation of the $M_{*}-M_{halo}$ relation predicted from abundance matching. In particular, our UDG measurements are consistent with dwarf sized halos, having typical masses between $10^{10}$ and $10^{11}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. Overall, our UDG sample is statistically indistinguishable from smaller LSB galaxies in the same magnitude range. We do not find any candidates likely to be as rich as some of those found in the Coma cluster. We suggest that environment might play a role in producing GC-rich LSB galaxies., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

Despite the high accuracy of photometric redshifts (zphot) derived using Machine Learning (ML) methods, the quantification of errors through reliable and accurate Probability Density Functions (PDFs) is still an open problem. First, because it is difficult to accurately assess the contribution from different sources of errors, namely internal to the method itself and from the photometric features defining the available parameter space. Second, because the problem of defining a robust statistical method, always able to quantify and qualify the PDF estimation validity, is still an open issue. We present a comparison among PDFs obtained using three different methods on the same data set: two ML techniques, METAPHOR (Machine-learning Estimation Tool for Accurate PHOtometric Redshifts) and ANNz2, plus the spectral energy distribution template fitting method, BPZ. The photometric data were extracted from the KiDS (Kilo Degree Survey) ESO Data Release 3, while the spectroscopy was obtained from the GAMA (Galaxy and Mass Assembly) Data Release 2. The statistical evaluation of both individual and stacked PDFs was done through quantitative and qualitative estimators, including a dummy PDF, useful to verify whether different statistical estimators can correctly assess PDF quality. Most of the galaxies in the Universe at present day are in groups, which are key to understanding the galaxy evolution. In this work we present a new deep mosaic of 1.2 x 1.0 square degrees of the group of galaxies centered on NGC 5018, acquired at the ESO VLT Survey Telescope. We use u, g, r images to analyse the structure of the group members and to estimate the intra-group light. Taking advantage of the deep and multiband photometry and of the large field of view of the VST telescope, we studied the structure of the galaxy members and the faint features into the intra-group space and we give an estimate of the intragroup diffuse light in the NGC 5018 group of galaxies. We found that ~ 41% of the total g-band luminosity of the group is in the form of intragroup light (IGL). The IGL has a (g - r) color consistent with those of other galaxies in the group, indicating that the stripping leading to the formation of IGL is ongoing. From the study of this group we can infer that there are at least two different interactions involving the group members: one between NGC 5018 and NGC 5022, which generates the tails and ring-like structures detected in the light, and another between NGC 5022 and MCG-03-34-013 that have produced the HI tail. Using a sample of 472 local Universe (z<0.06) galaxies in the stellar mass range 10.25 < log M*/M_sun < 10.75, we explore the variation in galaxy structure as a function of morphology and galaxy colour. Our sample of galaxies is sub-divided into red, green and blue colour groups and into elliptical and non-elliptical (disk-type) morphologies. Using KiDS and VIKING derived postage stamp images, a group of eight volunteers visually classified bars, rings, morphological lenses, tidal streams, shells and signs of merger activity for all systems. We find a significant surplus of rings ($2.3\sigma$) and lenses ($2.9\sigma$) in disk-type galaxies as they transition across the green valley. Combined, this implies a joint ring/lens green valley surplus significance of $3.3\sigma$ relative to equivalent disk-types within either the blue cloud or the red sequence. We recover a bar fraction of ~44% which remains flat with colour, however, we find that the presence of a bar acts to modulate the incidence of rings and (to a lesser extent) lenses, with rings in barred disk-type galaxies more common by ~20-30 percentage points relative to their unbarred counterparts, regardless of colour. Additionally, green valley disk-type galaxies with a bar exhibit a significant $3.0\sigma$ surplus of lenses relative to their blue/red analogues. The existence of such structures rules out violent transformative events as the primary end-of-life evolutionary mechanism, with a more passive scenario the favoured candidate for the majority of galaxies rapidly transitioning across the green valley., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey is a Guaranteed Time program carried out with the ESO/VST telescope to provide deep optical imaging over two 4 deg$^2$ patches of the sky centred on the CDFS and ES1 pointings. We present the cosmic shear measurement over the 4 deg$^2$ covering the CDFS region in the $r$-band using LensFit. Each of the four tiles of 1 deg$^2$ has more than one hundred exposures, of which more than 50 exposures passed a series of image quality selection criteria for weak lensing study. The $5\sigma$ limiting magnitude in $r$- band is 26.1 for point sources, which is $\sim$1 mag deeper than other weak lensing survey in the literature (e.g. the Kilo Degree Survey, KiDS, at VST). The photometric redshifts are estimated using the VOICE $u,g,r,i$ together with near-infrared VIDEO data $Y,J,H,K_s$. The mean redshift of the shear catalogue is 0.87, considering the shear weight. The effective galaxy number density is 16.35 gal/arcmin$^2$, which is nearly twice the one of KiDS. The performance of LensFit on such a deep dataset was calibrated using VOICE-like mock image simulations. Furthermore, we have analyzed the reliability of the shear catalogue by calculating the star-galaxy cross-correlations, the tomographic shear correlations of two redshift bins and the contaminations of the blended galaxies. As a further sanity check, we have constrained cosmological parameters by exploring the parameter space with Population Monte Carlo sampling. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will enable revolutionary studies of galaxies, dark matter, and black holes over cosmic time. The LSST Galaxies Science Collaboration has identified a host of preparatory research tasks required to leverage fully the LSST dataset for extragalactic science beyond the study of dark energy. This Galaxies Science Roadmap provides a brief introduction to critical extragalactic science to be conducted ahead of LSST operations, and a detailed list of preparatory science tasks including the motivation, activities, and deliverables associated with each. In the modern galaxy surveys photometric redshifts play a central role in a broad range of studies, from gravitational lensing and dark matter distribution to galaxy evolution. Using a dataset of about 25,000 galaxies from the second data release of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) we obtain photometric redshifts with five different methods: (i) Random forest, (ii) Multi Layer Perceptron with Quasi Newton Algorithm, (iii) Multi Layer Perceptron with an optimization network based on the Levenberg-Marquardt learning rule, (iv) the Bayesian Photometric Redshift model (or BPZ) and (v) a classical SED template fitting procedure (Le Phare). We show how SED fitting techniques could provide useful information on the galaxy spectral type which can be used to improve the capability of machine learning methods constraining systematic errors and reduce the occurrence of catastrophic outliers. Photometric redshifts (photo-z's) are fundamental in galaxy surveys to address different topics, from gravitational lensing and dark matter distribution to galaxy evolution. The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), i.e. the ESO public survey on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST), provides the unprecedented opportunity to exploit a large galaxy dataset with an exceptional image quality and depth in the optical wavebands. Using a KiDS subset of about 25,000 galaxies with measured spectroscopic redshifts, we have derived photo-z's using i) three different empirical methods based on supervised machine learning, ii) the Bayesian Photometric Redshift model (or BPZ), and iii) a classical SED template fitting procedure (Le Phare). We confirm that, in the regions of the photometric parameter space properly sampled by the spectroscopic templates, machine learning methods provide better redshift estimates, with a lower scatter and a smaller fraction of outliers. SED fitting techniques, however, provide useful information on the galaxy spectral type which can be effectively used to constrain systematic errors and to better characterize potential catastrophic outliers.
