AIM: To define the possible beneficial impact of probiotics oral supplementation on patients affected by chalazion. METHODS: Prospective comparative pilot study on 20 adults suffering from chalazion randomly divided into two groups. Abstract

Purpose To identify audience and faculty preferences to optimize digital education sessions in ophthalmology.Methods We distributed an online survey to ophthalmology trainees and specialists worldwide. The survey investigated respondents’ preferences on various findings of hypothetical digital educational sessions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Fisher's exact probability and ANOVA tests.Results The survey was completed by 655 respondents, from 53 different countries. According to most respondents, the optimal duration and timeframe for a valuable digital education session would be 30–60 min, without a break (52%), in the evening time-slot (6-8 p.m.) (45%) of a weekday (Monday-Thursday) (46%), regardless of age (p-value = 0.84, 0.39, 0.89, respectively) and job position (p-value = 0.31, 0.29, 0.08, respectively). The availability of webinars and recorded surgical videos/clinical cases, associated with live discussion, represented the most important opportunity of digital educational channels for 46% and 42% of respondents, respectively.Conclusion Appropriate planning of timing and structure of digital educational ophthalmology sessions may optimize their effectiveness. Using multiple e-learning formats may be helpful to ensure the continuity of learning activities, also in view of a long-term replacement of traditional in-person education.

Abstract

Among the wide contest of the train vehicles rolling noise evaluation, the aim of the paper is the development, implementation and experimental testing of a new method for roughness calculation according to FprCEN/TR 16891:2015 and the successive evaluation of the correction parameters of the measured rolling noise due to the presence of not compliant rail roughness. It is, in-fact, a very often operative condition, the execution of rolling noise tests over standard in-operation rails that are characterized by roughness profiles very different from standard one as those prescribed within the ISO 3095 procedure. Very often, this difference lead to the presence of an exceeding noise that needs to be evaluated and revised for a correct definition of the phenomena. Within the paper, the procedure implementation is presented and later on verified in operative experimental contest; forecasted and measured data are compared and successively commented.

Abstract

Evolution of imaging techniques has renewed interest in the diagnosis of lamellar macular hole (LMH) and greatly implemented the possibilities of gaining more detailed insights into its pathogenesis. Among noninvasive techniques, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is considered the primary examination modality to study LMHs, given its ability to image foveal structure and its widespread availability. OCT also allows to resolve the epiretinal materials associated with LMH, i.e., tractional epiretinal membranes (ERMs) and epiretinal proliferation (EP). En face OCT reconstructions are useful to confirm the foveal abnormalities shown by the eyes with LMH, whereas OCT angiography may reveal alterations of the size and shape of the foveal avascular zone and alterations of the density of the superficial and deep vascular plexuses. On slit-lamp biomicroscopy or fundus camera examination, LMH appears as a round or oval, reddish lesion at the center of the macula, slightly darker than the surrounding retina. The associated tractional ERM, causing wrinkling and glistening of the retinal surface, is usually readily appreciable, whereas EP is hardly apparent on biomicroscopy or fundus photography since the retina surface appears smooth. When imaged with blue fundus autofluorescence (B-FAF) imaging, LMHs are characterized by an increased autofluorescent signal, the intensity of which does not correlate with the thickness of the residual outer retinal tissue. Green reflectance and blue reflectance (BR) images clearly show the increased reflection and wrinkling of the retinal surface caused by tractional ERM associated with LMH. BR and multicolor imaging enable the visualization of EP associated with LMH in the form of a sharply demarcated dark area and in the form of a yellowish area surrounding the hole, respectively. Scarce data regarding invasive imaging techniques, such as fluorescein angiography, for the study of LMH are available in the literature. The aim of this review is to evaluate the contribution that each imaging modality can provide to study the morphologic characteristics of LMH.

Abstract

Noise is often generated by pressure changes in the air induced by mechanical vibrations. The study of these phenomena is known as structural acoustics or, in a more fashionable way, virboacoustics. Vibroacoustics is the study of the mechanical waves in structures and how they interact with, and radiate into, adjacent media. In railway the most important noise source, based on fluid and structure interaction is the rolling noise. The aim of the paper is the development and implementation of a numerical method for the rail decay rate and combined roughness calculation according to the FprCEN/TR 16891:2015 and a subsequent evaluation of the excess noise level in accordance with the ISO/FDIS 3095: 2013. The tool, as a final results, will make possible the evaluation of the rail parameters without the involvement of long and expensive test campaign based on classical roughness measurement methods and will permit the compensation of the roughness induced excess noise level for a comparative comprehension of the acoustic experimental data.

Abstract

Composite materials may reduce the final weight of the aircraft structural components, in addition to improving fatigue performance and corrosion resistance. In order to achieve the optimization of air transport systems, making them increasingly sustainable, the structural design must be surely reviewed, starting to follow the "composite thinking" philosophy. The present research provides some relevant outcomes concerning the design of a composite sample for the main landing gear bay of a large commercial airplane (EASA CS25 category), within ITEMB (InTEgrated Full Composite Main landing gear Bay Concept) project, a program of Clean Sky 2 EU research framework. The most ambitious goal is to develop a new generation of Lower Center Fuselage (LCF) with an innovative integrated landing system in the fuselage, which is considered the next frontier in the development of landing systems for medium-haul aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 aircraft family. The development of a different architecture, with the landing gear integrated within the related fuselage bay, could lead to a simplification of the whole sub-assembly with potential advantage in terms of construction and assembly times. Validated finite element models and rational approaches are needed to provide accurate assessments of the structural behavior: numerical simulations were then carried out in compliance with applicable airworthiness requirements. The structural strength and deformation expectations have been in appreciable agreement with the test data, ensuring the best performance and the global safety of the whole experimental campaign too.

Abstract

Cholesterol granuloma of the orbit is an uncommon condition. It affects almost exclusively the frontal bone in the supero-temporal quadrant of the orbit. It is an osteolytic lesion well-circumscribed by a fibrous capsule, with a granulomatous reaction surrounding cholesterol crystals and old hemorrhage. We report the case of a patient whose clinical and radiological findings were sufficient to make a correct diagnosis.

Abstract

Rolling noise is a relevant source in railway applications. The rolling noise is generated by the contact force the wheel, and the rail, exchange each other during relative motion. The interaction force between wheel and rail is generated by their roughness. Wheel and rail surfaces are not perfectly flat, they have a lot of small micro imperfections due to usage, damages, manufacturing. The whole of these imperfection is the roughness of the two surfaces. In the following a new interaction model will be shown where the roughness in kept in account to simulate the real case application. The model, based on previously studies, is improved introducing the rail and wheel real roughness for interaction force calculation. A real case study will be kept in account for model application and its application.

Abstract

Background/objectives: To compare the number of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy in the 2 months following the beginning of lockdown (study period) because of COVID-19 epidemic with those performed in the two earlier months of the same year (intra-year control) and in the period of 2019 corresponding to the lockdown (inter-year control).Methods: Retrospective analysis of surgical procedures carried out at 39 Academic hospitals. A distinction was made between elective and urgent procedures. Intravitreal injections were also considered. Percentages for all surgical procedures and incidence rate ratios (IRR) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) events were calculated. A pvalue <0.05 was considered significant.Results: A total of 20,886 versus 55,259 and 56,640 patients underwent surgery during the lockdown versus intra-and inter-year control periods, respectively. During the lockdown, only 70% of patients for whom an operation/intravitreal injection was recommended, finally underwent surgery; the remaining patients did not attend because afraid of getting infected at the hospital (23%), taking public transportation (6.5%), or unavailable swabs (0.5%). Elective surgeries were reduced by 96.2% and 96.4%, urgent surgeries by 49.7% and 50.2%, and intravitreal injections by 48.5% and 48.6% in the lockdown period in comparison to intra-year and inter-year control periods, respectively. IRRs for RRDs during lockdown dropped significantly in comparison with intra- and inter-year control periods (CI: 0.65–0.80 and 0.61–0.75, respectively, p< 0.001 for both).Conclusion: This study provides a quantitative analysis of the reduction of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract

A project aimed at the regeneration of urban space must necessarily be defined in full awareness of the inextricable connection that binds a place to the sense of identity that emanates from it: the body of the city is in fact constantly crossed by networks of human relationships. The task is to develop the ability to build not walls between places of the city but membranes between places in dialogue with one another. The creation of “District Avvocata / Quartiere dell’Arte” seems to be going in the direction mentioned above: our intention is to propose a systematic reflection on this project, supported by qualitative analysis of empirical evidence, by placing itwithinthebroadercontextofurbanregeneration.Webelievethatthiscanbeafruitfulparadigmaticexampleofregeneration of urban space and a potential turning point in ways of understanding and living the city.

Abstract

Evolution of imaging techniques has renewed interest in the diagnosis of lamellar macular hole (LMH) and greatly implemented the possibilities of gaining more detailed insights into its pathogenesis. Among noninvasive techniques, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is considered the primary examination modality to study LMHs, given its ability to image foveal structure and its widespread availability. OCT also allows to resolve the epiretinal materials associated with LMH, i.e., tractional epiretinal membranes (ERMs) and epiretinal proliferation (EP). En face OCT reconstructions are useful to confirm the foveal abnormalities shown by the eyes with LMH, whereas OCT angiography may reveal alterations of the size and shape of the foveal avascular zone and alterations of the density of the superficial and deep vascular plexuses. On slit-lamp biomicroscopy or fundus camera examination, LMH appears as a round or oval, reddish lesion at the center of the macula, slightly darker than the surrounding retina. The associated tractional ERM, causing wrinkling and glistening of the retinal surface, is usually readily appreciable, whereas EP is hardly apparent on biomicroscopy or fundus photography since the retina surface appears smooth. When imaged with blue fundus autofluorescence (B-FAF) imaging, LMHs are characterized by an increased autofluorescent signal, the intensity of which does not correlate with the thickness of the residual outer retinal tissue. Green reflectance and blue reflectance (BR) images clearly show the increased reflection and wrinkling of the retinal surface caused by tractional ERM associated with LMH. BR and multicolor imaging enable the visualization of EP associated with LMH in the form of a sharply demarcated dark area and in the form of a yellowish area surrounding the hole, respectively. Scarce data regarding invasive imaging techniques, such as fluorescein angiography, for the study of LMH are available in the literature. Abstract

Montesanto foodwalk è la prima tappa di ZurriApp (dal napoletano "zurriare": andare a zonzo), progetto di sound design sui quartieri di Napoli. Ideato da Nevermind, impresa di comunicazione e cultura digitale, ZurriApp offre "camminate sonore" nel tessuto cittadino, ma con un'ottica peculiare: ogni quartiere è letto alla luce di un filo conduttore, proprio come nel caso del quartiere Montesanto, indagato a partire dal suo rapporto con il cibo, e di tutti i significati ad esso correlato. Cibo come valore di comunità, cibo come "smart specialization", nel caso di Montesanto è correlato ad un'altra istituzione culturale informale: il mercato, la vera e propria agorà del quartiere. A raccontare il quartiere non è un solo narratore, ma è la voce collettiva, ed il suono, dei racconti di chi vive il quartiere a partire dal cibo. I narratori dell'app sono infatti i protagonisti delle stesse attività presenti come presidio territoriale. Gli esercenti, gli artigiani, i cuochi, i pizzaioli, le persone che si occupano di cibo, solo per questo stesso fatto, si prendono cura del quartiere.

Abstract

Fleet maintenance and safety aspects represent a strategic aspect in the managing of the modern aircraft fleets. The demand for efficient techniques of system and structure’s monitoring represent so a key aspect in the design of new generation aircraft. This is even more significant for composite structures that can be highly susceptible to delamination of the ply, which is often very difficult to detect externally and can lead to a dramatic reduction of design strength and service life, as a consequence of impact damage. The purpose of the work is the presentation of an innovative application within the Non Destructive Testing field based upon vibration measurements. The aim of the research has been the development of a Non Destructive Test (NDT) which meets most of the mandatory requirements for effective health monitoring systems while, at the same time, reducing as much as possible the complexity of the data analysis algorithm and the experimental acquisition instrumentation.
