Abstract The influence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) on antiferromagnetism is elucidated through the characterization of the spin‒flop transition. However, due to a lack of suitable candidates for investigation, a detailed understanding of the preservation of the spin‒flop transition in the presence of low MCA energy remains elusive. In this study, we introduce CrPS4, which is a two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet, as an ideal system to explore the exceedingly weak limit of the thermally-evolved MCA energy. By employing a uniaxially anisotropic spin model and fitting it to the experimental magnetic properties, we quantify the MCA energy and identify the discernible spin configurations in different magnetic phases. Notably, even at the limit of extremely weak MCA, with a mere 0.12% of the interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange interaction at T = 33 K, which is slightly below the Néel temperature (T N) of 38 K, the spin‒flop transition remains intact. We further establish a direct correlation between the visualized spin arrangements and the progressive reversal of magnetic torque induced by rotating magnetic fields. This analysis reveals the essential role of MCA in antiferromagnetism, thus extending our understanding to previously undetected limits and providing valuable insights for the development of spin-processing functionalities based on van der Waals magnets.

Background With the increasing number of internet users, search engines have become a widely used source of health-related information. However, evaluating the quality of medical information obtained through search engines can be challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of search results related to breast implants obtained from major domestic websites in Korea using systematic evaluation standards. Methods Two main primary search terms (“gaseum” [breast] implant and “yubang” [breast] implant), along with 15 adjunct search terms, were combined and searched in Google, Naver, and Daum. The top 20 websites were evaluated and classified according to their type and provider. They were scored using the Korean Medical Association’s Internet Health Information Certification Standards. The proportion of significant websites, their categorical distribution, and the quality of information scores were then compared. Results Google yielded the highest number of appropriate results, with statistical significance. Blogs (36.4%) and news (34.8%) were the most common types of search results, while healthcare provider groups (49.5%) constituted the most common provider subgroup. The revision of the Korea Organ Transplantation Act (KOTA) in 2018 included hand/arm among the organs that can be transplanted. The first hand transplantation since the revision of KOTA took place in January 2021. A 62-year-old male patient experienced hand amputation on July 13, 2018, by a catapult injury. The patient first visited our institute 3 months after the injury. After serial interviews and an overall evaluation, the patient was registered on the hand transplantation waiting list in January 2020. On January 9, 2021, the patient underwent hand transplantation at the right distal forearm level. The total operation time was 17 hours 15 minutes, and the cold ischemic time was 4 hours 9 minutes. Postoperative immunosuppression was administered based on the protocol used for kidney transplantation. Two acute rejection episodes occurred, on postoperative days 33 and 41. Both rejection episodes were reversible with rescue therapy of a higher tacrolimus trough level, steroid pulse therapy, and topical immunosuppressants. Controlled passive range of motion exercise was started on postoperative day 10. Dynamic splint was applied on postoperative day 18. At 1 year, graft maintenance and functional improvement were satisfactory, and the patient showed a Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand score of 25.8. We successfully performed the first hand transplantation surgery under the KOTA amendment. It came from the organic and effective cooperation of plastic, orthopaedic, and transplantation departments and we believe it will guarantee the future ongoing success.

Abstract Magnetic anisotropy is crucial in examining suitable materials for magnetic functionalities because it affects their magnetic characteristics. In this study, disordered-perovskite RCr0.5Fe0.5O3 (R = Gd, Er) single crystals were synthesized and the influence of magnetic anisotropy and additional ordering of rare-earth moments on cryogenic magnetocaloric properties was investigated. Both GdCr0.5Fe0.5O3 (GCFO) and ErCr0.5Fe0.5O3 (ECFO) crystallize in an orthorhombic Pbnm structure with randomly distributed Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions. In GCFO, the long-range order of Gd3+ moments emerges at a temperature of T Gd (the ordering temperature of Gd3+ moments) = 12 K. The relatively isotropic nature of large Gd3+ moment originating from zero orbital angular momentum exhibits giant and virtually isotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with a maximum magnetic entropy change of $$\Delta {S}_{M}$$ Δ S M ≈ 50.0 J/kg·K. In ECFO, the highly anisotropic magnetizations result in a large rotating MCE characterized by a rotating magnetic entropy change $$\Delta {S}_{\theta }$$ Δ S θ = 20.8 J/kg·K. These results indicate that a detailed understanding of magnetically anisotropic characteristics is the key for exploring improved functional properties in disordered perovskite oxides.

Abstract Explorations of van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets have revealed new avenues for understanding the fundamentals of highly anisotropic magnetism and realizing spin-based functional properties. However, there is a serious limitation to the feasibility of spintronic applications at room temperature owing to the lack of suitable materials. In this work, we examined the anisotropic magnetic characteristics of Co-doped Fe5GeTe2, a high-T N antiferromagnet with T N = 350 K in which magnetic multilayers are intrinsically formed. Our spin-model calculations with uniaxial anisotropy quantify the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and visualize the specific spin arrangements varying in the presence of rotating magnetic fields at room temperature. We further show that the spin configurations can be profoundly relevant to the distinctive evolution of magnetic torques in different magnetic phases. Our advanced approach offers a high-T N vdW antiferromagnet as a magnetic platform to establish room-temperature spin-processing functionalities.

Abstract The influence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in antiferromagnets is evident in a spin flip or flop transition. Contrary to spin flops, a spin-flip transition has been scarcely presented due to its specific condition of relatively strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the role of spin-flips on anisotropic phenomena has not been investigated in detail. In this study, we present antiferromagnet-based functional properties on an itinerant Ising antiferromagnet Ca0.9Sr0.1Co2As2. In the presence of a rotating magnetic field, anomalous Hall conductivity and anisotropic magnetoresistance are demonstrated, the effects of which are maximized above the spin-flip transition. Moreover, a joint experimental and theoretical study is conducted to provide an efficient tool to identify various spin states, which can be useful in spin-processing functionalities.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether robotic myomectomy (RM) resulted in any measurable clinical improvement over laparoscopic myomectomy (LM) in subsequent cesarean delivery. Materials and methods: The medical records of 273 patients who had undergone LM or RM followed by subsequent cesarean delivery for the period of September 2015 to December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Background Endoscopic forehead lift with cortical tunneling is an effective option for rejuvenation of the upper third of the face. Although it has been considered safe and reliable, with relatively consistent long-term results, relapse and weakening of adhesion have been common problems. Methods We suggest the dual-tunneling method for overcoming these limitations. A total of 100 patients aged 17 to 65 years underwent forehead lifting with cortical tunneling by the senior author from August 2016 to December 2017. The single-tunnel method was applied in one half of the patients and the dual-tunnel method in the other half. Bilateral brow positions were measured immediately following surgery and 6 months later. Results For all cases, cortical tunneling was done at the central incision and both paramedian incisions; therefore, three tunnels were used in the control group and six tunnels in the experimental group. In the single-tunnel group, relapse distances were 2.39±0.83 mm for the medial brow and 3.26±0.91 mm for the lateral brow (6 months postoperatively; n=100). Abstract Spin-flip transition can occur in antiferromagnets with strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, inducing a significant modification of the anisotropic magnetic properties through phase conversion. In contrast to ferromagnets, antiferromagnets have not been thoroughly examined in terms of their anisotropic characteristics. We investigated the magnetic-field and angle-dependent magnetic properties of Ising-type antiferromagnetic Ca0.9Sr0.1Co2As2 using magnetic torque measurements. An A-type antiferromagnetic order emerges below T N = 97 K aligned along the magnetically easy c-axis. The reversal of the angle-dependent torque across the spin-flip transition was observed, revealing the strong influence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy on the magnetic properties. Based on the easy-axis anisotropic spin model, we theoretically generated torque data and identified specific spin configurations associated with the magnetic torque variation in the presence of a rotating magnetic field. Our results enrich fundamental and applied research on diverse antiferromagnetic compounds by shedding new light on the distinct magnetic features of the Ising-type antiferromagnet.

Abstract Background Ovarian “seromucinous carcinoma” has been recently removed in 2020 5th Edition of WHO classification of Female Genital Tumors and is considered as a subtype of endometrioid carcinoma with mucinous differentiation, while “seromucinous borderline tumor” remains and exists as a distinct entity. Both diseases may be considered as no more same lineage. However, ovarian seromucinous borderline tumor (SMBT) is also one of the endometriosis-related neoplasm of ovary similar to endometrioid tumor, featuring that about 50% of ovarian SMBTs combine endometriosis. The present study was aimed to investigate whether the ovarian SMBTs are different in clinical features and molecular patterns, according to the presence of combined endometriosis. Results There were no statistical differences in clinical findings between two groups. There was also no significant difference in pregnancy outcomes and recurrence between two groups. Abstract Double-perovskite multiferroics have been investigated because alternating orders of magnetic ions act as distinct magnetic origins for ferroelectricity. In Yb2CoMnO6, the frustrated antiferromagnetic order emerging at T N = 52 K induces ferroelectric polarization perpendicular to the c axis through cooperative O2− shifts via the symmetric exchange striction. In our detailed measurements of the magnetoelectric properties of single-crystalline Yb2CoMnO6, we observe full ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loops that are strongly coupled to the dielectric constant and ferroelectric polarization at various temperatures below T N. Unlike Lu2CoMnO6 with non-magnetic Lu3+ ions, we suggest the emergence of additional ferroelectric polarization along the c axis below the ordering temperature of magnetic Yb3+ ions, T Yb ≈ 20 K, based on the spin structure established from recent neutron diffraction experiments. While the proposed description for additional ferroelectricity, ascribed to the symmetric exchange striction between Yb3+ and Co2+/Mn4+ magnetic moments, is clearly given, anomalies of dielectric constants along the c axis are solely observed. Our interesting findings on magnetoelectric hysteresis and the possible development of additional ferroelectricity reveal notable characteristics of double perovskites and provide essential guidance for the further examination of magnetoelectric functional properties.

Radical trachelectomy is conducted in women with early stage cervical cancer who strongly desire fertility preservation. To improve fertility outcomes, the preservation of the uterine artery has been suggested, which can be feasible by minimally invasive surgery using laparoscopy or robots. Although cesarean delivery is required for maternal and fetal health, vaginal delivery is a concern due to the fast delivery process of risk of preterm labor. We report a case of a 32-year-old nulliparous woman with stage IB1 cervical cancer who underwent robot-assisted uterine artery-preserving radical trachelectomy for improving fertility. This case is meaningful because she delivered by vaginal delivery after incision of the fibrotic ring at the level of uterovaginal anastomosis because delivery proceeded too quickly prior to the preparation of the cesarean delivery.

Abstract In the study reported herein, silver-coated copper (Ag/Cu) powder was modified with alkanethiols featuring alkyl chains of different lengths, namely butyl, octyl, and dodecyl, to improve its thermal stability. The modification of the Ag/Cu powders with adsorbed alkanethiols was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Each powder was combined with an epoxy resin to prepare an electrically conductive film. The results confirmed that the thermal stability of the films containing alkanethiol-modified Ag/Cu powders is superior to that of the film containing untreated Ag/Cu powder. The longer the alkyl group in the alkanethiol-modified Ag/Cu powder, the higher the initial resistance of the corresponding electrically conductive film and the lower the increase in resistance induced by heat treatment.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can commonly metastasize to the liver, lungs, bones and brain. We herein report a rare presentation of oligometastatic RCC with isolated synchronous metastasis to the triceps. A 44-year-old male presented with an enlarging mass involving the right triceps. A biopsy revealed features consistent with metastatic clear cell RCC (ccRCC). Subsequent computed tomography (CT) Imaging demonstrated a 6 cm right renal mass. He underwent a right laparoscopic radical nephrectomy which revealed a tumour stage 1b ISUP Grade 2 ccRCC. Clinicians should have a degree of suspicion for a metastatic lesion for an enlarging soft tissue mass.

ABSTRACT The oncogenic gammaherpesviruses, including human Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), and murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68, γHV68, MuHV-4), are associated with numerous malignancies, including B cell lymphomas and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. These viruses employ numerous molecular strategies to colonize the host, including the expression of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). As the first viral ncRNAs identified, EBV-encoded RNA 1 and 2 (EBER1 and EBER2, respectively) have been investigated extensively for decades; however, their specific in vivo functions remain largely unknown. In work here, we used chimeric MHV68 viruses in an in vivo complementation system to test whether EBV EBER2 contributes to acute and/or chronic phases of infection. Expression of EBER2 derived from EBV strain B95-8 resulted in a significant expansion of latently infected B cells in vivo, which was accompanied by a decrease in virus-infected plasma cells. EBV strains typically carry one of two variants of EBER2, which differ primarily by a 5-nucleotide core polymorphism identified initially in the EBV strain M81. Strikingly, mutation of the 5 nucleotides that define this core polymorphism resulted in the loss of the infected B cell expansion and restored plasma cell infection. This work reveals that the B95-8 variant of EBER2 promotes the expansion of the latently infected B cell pool in vivo and may do so in part through inhibition of terminal differentiation. These findings provide new insight into mechanisms by which viral ncRNAs promote in vivo colonization and further and provide further evidence of the inherent tumorigenic risks associated with gammaherpesvirus manipulation of B cell differentiation. Abstract The preservation of ovarian reserve during laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) ovarian cystectomy is crucial for reproductive-age women. This study was a single-blinded, single-center, and randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of hemostatic agents on the preservation of ovarian reserve and hemostasis during LESS ovarian cystectomy. Patients with unilateral ovarian cyst were randomized to the hemostatic agent and coagulation groups according to the hemostasis method. Afterwards, the patients underwent LESS ovarian cystectomy, and hemostasis was performed after ovarian cyst excision according to the assigned hemostasis method. If hemostasis was not completed within 10 min. After discharge, the patients were followed until 3 months after surgery. We compared the hemoglobin, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, and ovarian volumes before surgery, and 2 days, 1 week, and 3 months after surgery (3 M-POST), and the decline ratio between the two groups. Abstract Magnetic properties can be manipulated to enhance certain functionalities by tuning different material processing parameters. Here, we present the controllable magnetization steps of hysteresis loops in double-perovskite single crystals of Eu2CoMnO6. Ferromagnetic order emerges below T C ≈ 122 K along the crystallographic c axis. The difficulty in altering Co2+ and Mn4+ ions naturally induces additional antiferromagnetic clusters in this system. Annealing the crystals in different gas environments modifies the mixed magnetic state, and results in the retardation (after O2-annealing) and bifurcation (after Ar-annealing) of the magnetization steps of isothermal magnetization. This remarkable variation offers an efficient approach for improving the magnetic properties of double-perovskite oxides.

Objective To investigate clinical features that affect the number of pelvic lymph nodes (PLNs) harvested and prognostic significance of the number of PLNs removed in patients with stage IB1 to IIA2 cervical cancer. Methods Data from patients with cervical cancer whom underwent hysterectomy with PLN dissection between June 2004 and July 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. Data on clinicopathologic factors including age, height, and weight were collected. Data on the presence of PLN metastasis on imaging studies prior to surgery, number of PLNs harvested, and presence of metastasis in the harvested PLNs were retrieved from medical records. Clinical features associated with the number of PLNs harvested were analyzed. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) according to the number of PLNs harvested were analyzed. Results During the study period, 210 patients were included. The height and weight of patients and preoperative positive positron emission tomography findings were significantly associated with a higher number of PLNs harvested. As a pathologic factor, larger tumor size was associated with a higher number of PLNs harvested. Furthermore, a higher number of PLNs harvested was associated with a higher number of metastatic PLNs and patients undergoing postoperative concurrent chemoradiation therapy. Patient height and tumor size were independent factors affecting the number of PLNs harvested in multivariate analysis. However, the number of PLNs harvested was not associated with DFS or OS. Conclusion The number of PLNs harvested during surgery was associated with patient height; however, this was not related to the prognosis of the disease.

This study aims to evaluate the drug distribution, tissue concentrations, penetration depth, pharmacokinetic properties, and toxicities after rotational intraperitoneal pressurized aerosol chemotherapy (RIPAC) in pigs. Because relevant medical devices have not been introduced, we developed our prototype of pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) and RIPAC by adding a conical pendulum motion device for rotating the nozzle. RIPAC and PIPAC were conducted using 150 ml of 1% methylene blue to evaluate the drug distribution and 3.5 mg of doxorubicin in 50 ml of 0.9% NaCl to evaluate the tissue concentrations and penetration depth, pharmacokinetic properties, and toxicities. All agents were sprayed as aerosols via the nozzle, DreamPen® (Dalim Biotech, Gangwon, South Korea), with a velocity of 5 km/h at a flow rate of 30 ml/min under a pressure of 7 bars, and capnoperitoneum of 12 mmHg was maintained for 30 min. As a result, RIPAC showed a wider distribution and stronger intensity than PIPAC. Compared with PIPAC, RIPAC demonstrated high values of the tissue concentration in the central, right upper, epigastrium, left upper, left lower, right lower, and right flank regions (median, 375.5–2124.9 vs. 161.7–1240 ng/ml; p ≤ .05), and higher values of the depth of concentrated diffusion and depth of maximal diffusion (median, 232.5–392.7 vs. 116.9–240.1 μm; 291.2–551.2 vs. 250.5–362.4 μm; p ≤ .05) in all regions except for bowels. In RIPAC, the pharmacokinetic properties reflected hemodynamic changes during capnoperitoneum, and there were no related toxicities. Conclusively, RIPAC may have the potential to enhance drug delivery into the peritoneum compared to PIPAC.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of and risk factors for recurrence ovarian endometrioma after conservative surgery in patients aged 40–49 years. This retrospective, single-center study included 408 women between January 2008 and November 2018. All patients underwent ovarian cyst enucleation, were pathologically diagnosed with ovarian endometrioma and were followed up for ≥ 6 months. Recurrence was defined as a cystic mass with diameter ≥ 2 cm detected by sonography. Recurrence rate after conservative surgery and risk factor of recurrence were analyzed. The median follow-up duration after surgery was 32.0 ± 25.9 months (range 6–125 months). Ovarian endometrioma recurred in 34 (8.3%) of included women and median time to recurrence was 22.4 ± 18.2 months. The cumulative recurrences rate at 12, 24, 36, and 60 months were 3.7%, 6.7%, 11.1%, and 16.7%, respectively. Recurrence was correlated with multilocular cysts (p = 0.038), previous surgical history of ovarian endometrioma (p = 0.006) and salpingectomy (p = 0.043), but not use or duration of post-operative medication. In multivariate analysis, large cyst size (> 5.5 cm) was only risk factor for recurrence in this age group. Post-operative medication did not reduce disease recurrence rate, and thus may be administered for endometriosis-associated pain rather than to prevent recurrence in patients aged 40–49 years.

Abstract In rare-earth orthoferrites, strongly correlated order parameters have been thoroughly investigated, which aims to find multiple functionalities such as multiferroic or magnetoelectric properties. We have discovered highly anisotropic and nonlinear magnetodielectric effects from detailed measurements of magnetoelectric properties in single-crystalline orthoferrite, ErFeO3. Isothermal dielectric constant varies in shapes and signs depending on the relative orientations between the external electric and magnetic fields, which may be ascribed to the spin-phonon couplings. In addition, a dielectric constant with both electric and magnetic fields along the c axis exhibits two symmetric sharp anomalies, which are closely relevant to the spin-flop transition, below the ordering temperature of Er3+ spins, T Er = 3.4 K. We speculate that the magnetostriction from the exchange couplings between Er3+ and Fe3+ magnetic moments would be responsible for this relationship between electric and magnetic properties. Our results present significant characteristics of the orthoferrite compounds and offer a crucial guide for exploring suitable materials for magnetoelectric functional applications.

Background: Preclinical and retrospective data suggest that cytoreductive radical prostatectomy may benefit a subset of men who present with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). Herein, we report the results of the first planned Phase 1 study on cytoreductive surgery. Methods: From four institutions, 36 patients consented to the study. However, four did not complete surgery because of rapid disease progression (n = 3) and another because of an intraoperatively discovered pericolonic abscess. Men with newly diagnosed clinical mPCa to lymph nodes or bones were eligible. The primary endpoint was the rate of major perioperative complications (Clavien-Dindo Grade 3 or higher) occurring within 90 days of surgery. Results: The mean age at surgery was 64.0 years. The 90-day overall complication rate was 31.2% (n = 10), of which two (6.25%) were considered major complications: one acute tubular necrosis requiring temporary dialysis and one death. In men with more than 6 months of follow-up, 67.9% had prostate specific antigen nadir ≤0.2 ng/mL, while one patient experienced a rapid rise in prostate specific antigen and another a widely disseminated disease that resulted in death 5 months after surgery. Altogether, these results demonstrate that cytoreductive radical prostatectomy is safe and surgically feasible in selected patients who present with mPCa . Yet, there may be a small subset of patients in whom surgery may cause a significant harm. Conclusion: Therefore, cytoreductive surgery in men with mPCa should be limited to clinical trials until robust data are available. Summary: Selective assembly of influenza virus segments into virions is proposed to be mediated through intersegmental RNA-RNA interactions. Here, we developed a method called 2CIMPL that includes proximity ligation under native conditions to identify genome-wide RNA duplexes. Interactions between all eight segments were observed at multiple sites along a given segment and are concentrated at hotspots. Furthermore, synonymous nucleotide changes in a hotspot decreased the formation of RNA-RNA interactions at this site and resulted in a genome-wide rearrangement without a loss in replicative fitness. These results indicate that the viral RNA interaction network is flexible to account for nucleotide evolution. Moreover, comparative analysis of RNA-RNA interaction sites with viral nucleoprotein (NP) binding to the genome revealed that RNA junctions can also occur adjacent to NP peaks, suggesting that NP association does not exclude RNA duplex formation. Overall, 2CIMPL is a versatile technique to map in vivo RNA-RNA interactions.

Abstract Background Somatic amplifications of the LYL1 gene are relatively common occurrences in patients who develop uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC) as opposed to other cancers. This study was undertaken to determine whether such genetic alterations affect survival outcomes of UCEC. Methods In 370 patients with UCEC, we analysed clinicopathologic characteristics and corresponding genomic data from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. Patients were stratified according to LYL1 gene status, grouped as amplification or non-amplification. Heightened levels of cancer-related genes expressed in concert with LYL1 amplification were similarly investigated through differentially expressed gene and gene set enrichment analyses. Factors associated with survival outcomes were also identified. Results Somatic LYL1 gene amplification was observed in 22 patients (5.9%) with UCEC. Patients displaying amplification (vs. non-amplification) were significantly older at the time of diagnosis and more often were marked by non-endometrioid, high-grade, or advanced disease. In survival analysis, the amplification subset showed poorer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates (3-year PFS: 34.4% vs. 79.9%, P = 0.031; 5-year OS: 25.1% vs. 84.9%, P = 0.014). However, multivariate analyses adjusted for tumor histologic type, grade, and stage did not confirm LYL1 gene amplification as an independent prognostic factor for either PFS or OS. Emerging evidence has suggested that cytoreductive prostatectomy (CRP) allows superior oncologic control when compared to current standard of care androgen deprivation therapy alone. However, the safety and benefit of cytoreduction in metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa) has not been proven. Therefore, we evaluated the incidence of complications following CRP in men newly diagnosed with mPCa. A total of 68 patients who underwent CRP from 2006 to 2014 at four tertiary surgical centers were compared to 598 men who underwent radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa). Urinary incontinence was defined as the use of any pad. CRP had longer operative times (200 min vs 140 min, P < 0.0001) and higher estimated blood loss (250 ml vs 125 ml, P < 0.0001) compared to the control group. However, both overall (8.82% vs 5.85%) and major complication rates (4.41% vs 2.17%) were comparable between the two groups. Importantly, urinary incontinence rate at 1-year after surgery was significantly higher in the CRP group (57.4% vs 90.8%, P < 0.0001). Univariate logistic analysis showed that the estimated blood loss was the only independent predictor of perioperative complications both in the unadjusted model (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.02-1.37; P = 0.025) and surgery type-adjusted model (OR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01-1.36; P = 0.034). In conclusion, CRP is more challenging than radical prostatectomy and associated with a notably higher incidence of urinary incontinence. Nevertheless, CRP is a technically feasible and safe surgery for selecting PCa patients who present with node-positive or bony metastasis when performed by experienced surgeons. A prospective, multi-institutional clinical trial is currently underway to verify this concept.

To improve healing of pressure ulcer wounds, it is important to optimize the conditions of the area surrounding the wound. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) promotes wound healing, however, the removal of NPWT can cause pain or focal bleeding, delaying wound healing or causing infection. In this study, we reviewed the efficacy of the lipidocolloid non-adherent dressing (Urgotul®) as a wound contact layer. A total of 38 patients from the same facility who applied NPWT from April 2016 to October 2019 were included and divided into two groups; NPWT with the lipidocolloid non-adherent dressing (group 1, experimental group, 19 patients) and NPWT only (group 2, control group, 19 patients). The condition of the wound was examined prior to NPWT application, at one week, and again at three weeks after application. No significant differences were found between groups for general characteristics, bacterial culture or photo analysis. However, when comparing groups based on the time of examination, there was a significant reduction of the wound size in group 1 (p = 0.001) but not in group 2 (p = 0.082). Therefore, the current study finds that using the lipidocolloid non-adherent dressing as a wound contact layer in NPWT stimulates healing by shrinking the size of the pressure ulcer wound.

ABSTRACT Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous gammaherpesvirus that establishes a latent reservoir in peripheral B-lymphocytes with sporadic reactivation. EBV also infects epithelial cells, predominantly resulting in a lytic infection, which may contribute to EBV transmission from saliva. In the nasopharynx, EBV infection can lead to the clonal expansion of a latently infected cell and the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The mechanisms governing EBV pathogenesis in nasopharyngeal epithelium are largely unknown. An advanced understanding would depend on a physiologically relevant culture model of polarized airway epithelium. The recent application of the organotypic raft culture in keratinocytes has demonstrated great promise for the use of polarized cultures in the study of EBV permissive replication. In this study, the adaptation of an air-liquid interface (ALI) culture method using transwell membranes was explored in an EBV-infected NPC cell line. In the EBV-infected NPC HK1 cell line, ALI culture resulted in the completion of EBV reactivation, with global induction of the lytic cascade, replication of EBV genomes, and production of infectious progeny virus. We propose that the ALI culture method can be widely adopted as a physiologically relevant model to study EBV pathogenesis in polarized nasal epithelial cells. IMPORTANCE Lifting adherent cells to the air-liquid interface (ALI) is a method conventionally used to culture airway epithelial cells into polarized apical and basolateral surfaces. Reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) from monolayer epithelial cultures is sometimes abortive, which may be attributed to the lack of authentic reactivation triggers that occur in stratified epithelium in vivo. In the present work, the ALI culture method was applied to study EBV reactivation in nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. The ALI culture of an EBV-infected cell line yielded high titers and can be dissected by a variety of molecular virology assays that measure induction of the EBV lytic cascade and EBV genome replication and assembly. EBV infection of polarized cultures of primary epithelial cells can be challenging and can have variable efficiencies. However, the use of the ALI method with established EBV-infected cell lines offers a readily available and reproducible approach for the study of EBV permissive replication in polarized epithelia.

ABSTRACT Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous gammaherpesvirus that persistently infects humans, with nearly 95% seropositivity in adults. Infection in differentiating epithelia is permissive, but EBV-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tumors harbor a clonal and nonproductive latent infection. However, in explanted NPC cultures and epithelial cell lines, episomal EBV genomes are frequently lost. The resulting unstable infection has hampered efforts to study the determinants of EBV persistence and latency in epithelial oncogenesis. The EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) protein is required for tethering EBV episomes to cellular DNA and for mitotic segregation to daughter cells. Expression of EBNA1 does not ensure faithful partitioning of EBV episomes or replicons, suggesting that additional regulatory mechanisms have yet to be elucidated. The EBV latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) is an oncogenic signaling protein expressed in latent and lytic cycles. This study identified that LMP1 contributes to the loss of EBV genomes in latently infected cells and promotes differentiation-induced lytic replication in a polarized air-liquid interface (ALI) culture model. Deletion of LMP1 in recombinantly infected 293 cells promoted the retention of EBV genomes in passaged cells, which was in part localized to a conserved PXQXT motif in the C-terminal signaling domain (CTAR1). Additionally, knockdown of LMP1 in the recombinantly infected NPC cell line HK1 resulted in decreased induction of lytic proteins and infectious EBV titers. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that in epithelial infections, regulation of LMP1 mechanisms may be a determinant of infection outcome and a potential risk factor for EBV persistence in preneoplastic cells. IMPORTANCE Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) is a constitutively active oncogenic signaling protein encoded by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Despite monoclonal infection in cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), it has been difficult to reconcile the heterogeneous LMP1 protein levels detected in tumor cells. The LMP1 protein is a pleiotropic signaling protein with oncogenic potential. Findings from this study are consistent with the hypothesis that LMP1 has a role distinct from that of oncogenesis that facilitates the viral life cycle by promoting an unstable but productive infection in differentiating epithelia.

The genomes of influenza A and B viruses have eight, single-stranded RNA segments that exist in the form of a viral ribonucleoprotein complex in association with nucleoprotein (NP) and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. We previously used high-throughput RNA sequencing coupled with crosslinking immunoprecipitation (HITS-CLIP) to examine where NP binds to the viral RNA (vRNA) and demonstrated for two H1N1 strains that NP binds vRNA in a non-uniform, non-random manner. In this study, we expand on those initial observations and describe the NP-vRNA binding profile for a seasonal H3N2 and influenza B virus. We show that, similar to H1N1 strains, NP binds vRNA in a non-uniform and non-random manner. Each viral gene segment has a unique NP binding profile with areas that are enriched for NP association as well as free of NP-binding. Interestingly, NP-vRNA binding profiles have some conservation between influenza A viruses, H1N1 and H3N2, but no correlation was observed between influenza A and B viruses. Our study demonstrates the conserved nature of non-uniform NP binding within influenza viruses. Mapping of the NP-bound vRNA segments provides information on the flexible NP regions that may be involved in facilitating assembly.

We report on the growth of multiferroic Yb2CoMnO6 and Lu2CoMnO6 single crystals which were synthesized by the flux method with Bi2O3. Yb2CoMnO6 and Lu2CoMnO6 crystallize in a double-perovskite structure with a monoclinic P21/n space group. Bulk magnetization measurements of both specimens revealed strong magnetic anisotropy and metamagnetic transitions. We observed a dielectric anomaly perpendicular to the c axis. The strongly coupled magnetic and dielectric states resulted in the variation of both the dielectric constant and the magnetization by applying magnetic fields, offering an efficient approach to accomplish intrinsically coupled functionality in multiferroics.

Purpose: Robotic single-site plus one-port myomectomy (RSOM) was designed to reduce the number of incision sites for greater cosmetic satisfaction of patients while retaining the benefits of conventional robotic multi-site myomectomy (CRM). Robotic single- site plus two-port myomectomy (RSTM) eliminated one port relative to conventional CRM, and RSOM achieved the same advantage with respect to RSTM. This study aimed to compare RSOM with RSTM in terms of their respective methodologies and surgical outcomes. Materials and Methods: The medical records of 230 patients who had undergone RSOM and 146 patients who had undergone RSTM were reviewed. The groups' surgical outcomes were compared using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Results: In the total data, RSOM had a shorter operative time (135.1±57.4 min vs. 149.9±46.2 min, p=0.009) and a shorter hospital stay (5.2±0.5 days vs. 5.4±0.7 days, p=0.033) relative to RSTM. The PSM analysis showed that there were no statistically significant intergroup differences in the patients' baseline characteristics. Regarding the surgical outcomes, the RSOM group showed shorter operative time (129.2±49.3 min vs. 148.7±46.3 min, p=0.001) compared to the RSTM group. Conclusion: Compared with RSTM, RSOM was associated with shorter operative time. Additionally, more detailed comparative and prospective studies are needed to evaluate RSOM relative to RSTM.
