We propose two stochastic models for the Coronavirus pandemic. The statistical properties of the models, in particular the correlation functions and the probability density functions, were duly computed. Our models take into account the adoption of lockdown measures as well as the crucial role of hospitals and health care institutes. To accomplish this work we adopt a kinetic-type reaction approach where the modelling of the lockdown measures is obtained by introducing a new mathematical basis and the intensity of the stochastic noise is derived by statistical mechanics. We analysed two scenarios: the stochastic SIS-model (Susceptible ⇒ Infectious ⇒ Susceptible) and the stochastic SIS-model integrated with the action of the hospitals; both models take into account the lockdown measures. We show that, for the case of the stochastic SIS-model, once the lockdown measures are removed, the Coronavirus infection will start growing again. However, the combined contributions of lockdown measures with the action of hospitals and health institutes is able to contain and even to dampen the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. This result may be used during a period of time when the massive distribution of vaccines in a given population is not yet feasible. We analysed data for USA and France. In the case of USA, we analysed the following situations: USA is subjected to the first wave of infection by Coronavirus and USA is in the second wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection. A l’heure des développements technologiques majeurs dans le domaine de la radiochirurgie, il est important de s’intéresser aux précisions des différentes options qui se présentent lors de la préparation d’un traitement. Dans ce travail, ce sont les systèmes de contention utilisés pour les traitements radiochirurgicaux délivrés à l’aide de l’appareil Gamma Knife qui sont au centre de l’attention.Il a été mis en évidence par les études cliniques et expérimentales que chaque système de contention présente une capacité différente à maintenir l’immobilité du patient au cours du traitement. Les analyses des différentes mesures effectuées ont permis d’établir la capacité de chaque système à garantir une correspondance entre les coordonnées théoriques et effectives du traitement, ce qui se traduit par la précision attribuable à chaque système. Les points forts et les faiblesses de chacun des systèmes de contention ont été mis en évidence. Dans certainessituations, il a été possible de proposer une méthode permettant de corriger en totalité ou en partie les imprécisions observées. Ceci n’est néanmoins pas possible actuellement pour tous les systèmes de contention. Cela a permis d’établir une proposition d’algorithme décisionnel afin d’aider au choix du système de contention optimal à utiliser en fonction de la situation rencontrée. En radiothérapie, le niveau de précision de la dose délivrée au patient au cours de son traitement est d’une importance essentielle dans l’évolution vers une amélioration de la qualité et de la cohérence des données de suivi. L’une des premières étapes vers un système de support à la décision clinique (Clinical-Decision Support System CDSS) est la reconstruction précise de cette dose délivrée, en prenant en compte les nombreux facteurs pouvant générer des déviations significatives entre la dose planifiée visualisée à l’écran par l’utilisateur et la dose réellement accumulée lors des séances de traitement. Ces facteurs incluent les variations de débit de l’accélérateur, les incertitudes d’étalonnage, de calcul de dose, les mouvements du patient et des organes, etc.L’objectif de cette étude est d’implémenter et tester une plate-forme de calcul Monte Carlo pour la validation des systèmes Cyberknife et Tomothérapie installés au Centre Oscar Lambret. L’étude d’un détecteur dédié aux petits faisceaux (la chambre d’ionisation microLion) est également incluse, ce détecteur étant particulièrement adapté aux mesures sur le système Cyberknife.Le contexte et les concepts théoriques sont introduits dans les deux premiers chapitres. One of the first steps to evolve towards a Clinical-Decision Support System (CDSS) is to be able to accurately reconstruct that delivered dose, taking into account the range of factors that can potentially generate significant differences between the planned dose visualized on the screen of the dosimetrist, and the actually delivered dose accumulated during the treatment sessions. These factors include accelerator output variations, commissioning uncertainties, dose computation errors, patient and organ movement, etc.The objective of this work is to implement and test a Monte Carlo platform for the validation of the Cyberknife and Tomotherapy systems installed at Centre Oscar Lambret. A study of a small field-dedicated detector (the microLion ionization chamber) is also included, this detector being particularly suited for measurements on the Cyberknife system.The context and theoretical concepts are introduced in the first two chapters. In the third chapter, the Monte Carlo modelling of the Cyberknife and microLion detector is detailed. The fourth part includes the description of the Monte Carlo platform Moderato and its evaluation module. Background We present the results of an analysis of the low frequency (LF) (0.25–1 Hz) and delta (1–4 Hz) waves during human sleep. Our objective was to investigate whether LF and delta waves should be considered as separate entities. Methods The slow-wave electroencephalogram (EEG) activity of 2 sets of 10 young, healthy volunteers was analysed utilising the rarely-used Lomb-Scargle periodogram. This method has advantages over the more commonly-used Fast Fourier Transform analysis. Results During the night, the frequencies of the most powerful waves are concentrated in the 0.5–2 Hz range and show a continuous tendency to shift towards slower frequencies during sleep. Comparison with existing methods When considering the frequency dynamics of slow-wave activity below 3 Hz, the unifying theory of LF and delta waves is more parsimonious than the idea that there is a different origin and regulation for the two sub-bands. Conclusions The unifying theory of LF and delta waves is the simplest explanation for the slow-wave activity of the EEG below 3 Hz. In previous works, we derived stationary density distribution functions (DDF) where the local equilibrium is determined by imposing the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle, under the scale invariance restrictions, and the minimum entropy production theorem. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to reobtain these DDF solely from the MaxEnt principle subject to suitable scale invariant restrictions in all the variables. For the sake of concreteness, we analyse the example of ohmic, fully ionized, tokamak-plasmas, in the weak-collisional transport regime. In this case we show that it is possible to reinterpret the stationary distribution function in terms of the Prigogine distribution function where the logarithm of the DDF is directly linked to the entropy production of the plasma. This leads to the suggestive idea that also the stationary neoclassical distribution functions, for magnetically confined plasmas in the collisional transport regimes, may be derived solely by the MaxEnt principle.

In this thesis, we present a theoretical investigation of reactive processes involving the HeH$^+$ molecular ion, with applications in laboratory and astrophysical plasma physics. We consider in particular two processes, which are the charge transfer in H + He$^+$ collisions at low energy from a molecular approach and the photodissociation of HeH$^+$.At the molecular level, the cross section is the basic quantity that has to be determined in order to achieve an understanding of reactive processes. Its calculation will be based on the description of the reactions using an emph{ab initio}, quantum mechanical approach. In this work, we will rely on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which allows the molecular motion to be separated into an electronic and a nuclear motion. The evaluation of cross sections then follows two steps.The first is the determination of the electronic structure of the molecule. We will calculate the adiabatic potential energy curves of the excited electronic states as well as the dipole matrix elements between these states. The non-adiabatic radial and rotational couplings, which result from the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, are also estimated. The second step is to solve the nuclear motion, which we achieve using a time-dependent method based on the propagation of wave packets on the coupled electronic states. A particular emphasis will be put on the importance of the excited states and of the non-adiabatic couplings in the description of reactive processes. In the treatment of the charge transfer reaction between H and He$^+$ in excited states, it is well known that the non-adiabatic radial couplings cannot be neglected. This thesis presents a comprehensive set of results, obtained through an innovative experimental methodology, that have important and extensive implications for the fields of integrative biology and complex systems. The main objective of the thesis is to study the inter-individual interactions involved during the initiation and coordination of movement in gregarious vertebrates, and in particular in the sheep Merinos d’Arles (Ovis aries). Key questions are, when an individual initiates a movement, what information is taken into account by conspecifics, how is this information spread across the group, and what mechanisms underlie the collective decision processes? To answer these questions, we created an experimental paradigm to trigger, in a standardized way, the movement of trained individuals that were then placed in a group of naïve conspecifics. Using two types of stimuli, a sound (public) and a vibration (private), we could evaluate the individual response of followers, and the effect of the behavioural state on this response. An additional set of experiments also provided recordings of spontaneous initiations of movement.Our results suggest that every individual in a group can initiate a collective movement. Our quantitative analysis then showed that, in Mérinos sheep, the individual decision to follow depends on a double mimetic effect; individuals take into account both the number of already departed individuals and the number of individuals which have not yet departed. A comparison between three experimental situations reveals that the decision rule is unique and that the behavioural state of potential followers only slightly affects the collective dynamics.Our approach, a combination of experimentation and modelling, provides original results that contribute to the understanding of individual and collective decision-making processes, and of the mechanisms involved during collective movement. La construction du nid chez les fourmis génère des structures assumant de nombreuses fonctions, qui sont en grande partie dépendantes de l’architecture produite. L’omniprésence de ces fonctionnalités contraste avec la forte diversité intra et inter-spécifique de la morphologie du nid.Ce travail a pour objectifs de déterminer d’une part la morphogenèse du nid durant son excavation par les fourmis (Chapitre 3), et d’autre part de quantifier l’impact de la taille du groupe (Chapitre 3) et de la qualité de l’environnement (qualité du matériau, gravité; Chapitres 4 & 5) sur cette séquence. Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons utilisé un dispositif de creusement en deux dimensions (2D) afin de suivre la dynamique d’excavation et l’évolution de la morphologie du nid au cours du temps.Nous avons tout d’abord mis en évidence (Chapitre 3) un changement brutal de la morphologie du nid au cours de sa croissance. Durant une première période d’excavation homogène, le nid est constitué d’une seule cavité de forme circulaire et au contour régulier. Par la suite, le pourtour de la cavité devient plus irrégulier, l’apparition de ‘‘bourgeons’’ lui donnant une apparence plus plissée. Enfin, la cavité centrale cesse de croître lorsque des ramifications se déploient depuis certains des ‘‘bourgeons’’. Nous avons qualifié de transitions morphologiques ces brusques changements de forme, dont la fréquence d’apparition augmente avec la taille de la population.Notre analyse et le recours à la simulation semblent indiquer que ce phénomène soit basé non pas sur un changement de comportement des ouvrières excavatrices mais sur la densité d’activité au front de creusement. Lorsque celle-ci est importante, des phénomènes d’encombrement se manifestent et le nid est excavé de manière homogène. À l’inverse, lorsque l’encombrement diminue les ouvrières peuvent focaliser leur travail et excavent des galeries. The first and main part of this thesis concerns the quantization of the transverse transport in diverse periodic quantum systems. From a theoretical point of view, the Hall conductivity's quantization may be understood at the single-particle level in terms of topological invariants. In periodic media such as crystals, the single-particle energy spectrum depicts a specific band structure. A modern approach, based on topology and differential geometry, consists in assigning an abstract mathematical object, a fibre bundle, to each energy band. The fibre bundle's topology is measured by a topological invariant, called the Chern number, which only takes integral values. Surprisingly, the transverse conductivity can be expressed as a sum of Chern numbers. In this work, one provides a rigorous derivation of this fact and one presents several methods which allow the numerical and analytical computation of the Chern numbers for diverse systems. The first original study concerns the physics of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices. These very popular experimental setups, which are currently designed in several laboratories worldwide, allow for the exploration of fundamental problems encountered in modern physics. In particular atoms trapped in optical lattices reproduce with a very high accuracy the physics of the Hubbard-type models which describe a huge variety of condensed matter phenomena, such as high-Tc superconductivity and the Mott quantum phase transition. Particularly interesting is the possibility to create artificial magnetic fields in optical lattices. Generated by complex laser configurations or by rotation of the trap, these artificial fields allow the simulation of electronic systems subjected to intense magnetic fields. In this thesis, one explores the possibility of a quantum Hall-like effect for neutral particles in such arrangements. In this thesis, we investigate the problem of path formation and prey retrieval in a swarm of robots. We present two swarm intelligence control mechanisms used for distributed robot path formation. In the first, the robots form linear chains. We study three variants of robot chains, which vary in the degree of motion allowedto the chain structure. The second mechanism is called vectorfield. In this case,the robots form a pattern that globally indicates the direction towards a goal orhome location. Both algorithms were designed following the swarm robotics controlprinciples: simplicity of control, locality of sensing and communication, homogeneityand distributedness.We test each controller on a task that consists in forming a path between twoobjects—the prey and the nest—and to retrieve the prey to the nest. The difficultyof the task is given by four constraints. First, the prey requires concurrent, physicalhandling by multiple robots to be moved. Second, each robot’s perceptual rangeis small when compared to the distance between the nest and the prey; moreover,perception is unreliable. Third, no robot has any explicit knowledge about theenvironment beyond its perceptual range. Fourth, communication among robots isunreliable and limited to a small set of simple signals that are locally broadcast.In simulation experiments we test our controllers under a wide range of conditions,changing the distance between nest and prey, varying the number of robotsused, and introducing different obstacle configurations in the environment. Furthermore,we tested the controllers for robustness by adding noise to the different sensors,and for fault tolerance by completely removing a sensor or actuator. We validate thechain controller in experiments with up to twelve physical robots. Les neurones sont des cellules excitables capables de coder et transmettre l’information sous forme d’oscillations du potentiel membranaire. Cette activité électrique est produite par une modification des flux ioniques transmembranaires. Les neurones constituent un exemple d’oscillateur cellulaire dont la dynamique non linéaire permet l’apparition d’une activité électrique complexe. Dans ce système, les ions calciques sont des messagers intracellulaires importants. Ils servent de médiateur entre un signal électrique et un signal chimique, par une modulation de l’activité enzymatique de certaines protéines. Ils interviennent dans de nombreuses fonctions neuronales, dont l’excitabilité électrique. Un des mécanismes mis en place par les neurones pour contrôler l’homéostasie du calcium intracellulaire provient de protéines cytoplasmiques capables de lier les ions calciques. Ces protéines jouent un rôle de « tampon » du calcium. Cependant, toutes leurs fonctions n’ont pas encore été mises en évidence. C’est l’objectif de notre travail. Nous avons voulu comprendre le rôle joué par une protéine « tampon » particulière, la calrétinine, sur le mode de décharge électrique d’un neurone où elle est exprimée en abondance, le grain cérébelleux. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé une approche théorique et expérimentale. Au niveau théorique, nous avons élaboré un modèle mathématique de l’activité électrique du grain cérébelleux, prenant en compte la chélation du calcium intracellulaire. Il permet de clarifier le rôle de la chélation du calcium intracellulaire sur les oscillations du potentiel membranaire. La modélisation de l’activité électrique du grain cérébelleux repose sur le formalisme développé par Hodgkin et Huxley pour l’axone géant de calmar. Dans ce contexte, l’application de la conservation de la charge au circuit équivalent de la membrane cellulaire fournit un système d’équations différentielles ordinaires, non linéaires. L’Imagerie par Résonance Magnétique (IRM) est une belle application de la physique et constitue sans aucun doute l’une des techniques les plus performantes d’imagerie médicale. Basée sur le phénomène de la Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire (RMN) du proton contenu dans les molécules d’eau, l’IRM permet d’investiguer en coupes les tissus mous du corps, sur base de contrastes différents. La méthode est non-invasive et n’utilise pas de radiations ionisantes. En plus des données morphologiques, l’IRM permet également d’obtenir des informations fonctionnelles et physiologiques.De nos jours, plus de 10 000 unités IRM existent dans le monde et des millions d’examens sont réalisés chaque année. La technique est en constant développement et le domaine de recherches est multidisciplinaire. Il concerne aussi bien les développements méthodologiques (imagerie rapide, imagerie de diffusion, etc.) que technologiques (imagerie à haut champ, systèmes de gradients à commutation rapide, etc.), le point central des recherches étant l’amélioration de la qualité des images et la diminution du temps d’acquisition. Ceci implique l'optimisation des différentes séquences IRM (séries d'impulsions radiofréquence et de gradients de champ magnétique) tenant compte des contraintes imposées par le matériel, ainsi que le développement et l'optimisation du matériel lui-même. Cette thèse est consacrée au design avancé des séquences d’impulsions et contribue donc à l'optimisation des schémas d’acquisition en IRM.En particulier, le présent travail est focalisé sur la compréhension et l’amélioration d’un certain type de séquences rapides, employant des échos de gradients :les séquences Steady-State Free Precession (SSFP) et plus précisément les séquences dites balanced-SSFP.
