Abstract Purpose To evaluate the baseline characteristics of fundus autofluorescence (FAF) in patients with submacular hemorrhage (SMH). Methods This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with treatment-naive, foveal-involving subretinal hemorrhage (size > 2-disc diameters) of any etiology, presenting between June 2017 and June 2023. Only cases with good-quality color fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, and blue-light FAF images at baseline were included. SMH imaging characteristics were documented and correlated with treatment outcomes. A successful treatment outcome was defined as the reduction, displacement or clearance of the SMH from beneath the fovea. Results Nineteen cases of SMH (13 males, 6 females), ranging from 14 to 85 years, were analyzed. Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) was the most common etiology (n = 11, 58%). Baseline visual acuity ranged from 6/9 to counting fingers at ½ meter, with a median presentation time of 7 days from symptom onset (range: 1–57 days). Treatment success was observed in 13 eyes (68%). Hypoautofluoroscence on FAF was significantly associated with SMH resolution (p = 0.021). However, no association was found between treatment success and clinical hemorrhage characteristics (p = 0.222), OCT findings (p = 0.222), or specific treatments (p > 0.05). Hypoautofluoroscence on FAF was the sole predictor of treatment success, as demonstrated by Spearman’s correlation (r = 0.637; p = 0.003) and linear regression analysis (p = 0.003). Conclusion FAF, in conjunction with color fundus photography and OCT, may provide valuable insights for clinicians in formulating treatment strategies for patients with SMH. Hypoautofluoroscence on FAF was a significant predictor of successful SMH resolution in this study.

Abstract Background Sustainable crop production along with best nutrient use efficiency is the key indicator of smart agriculture. Foliar application of plant nutrients can complement soil fertilization with improved nutrient uptake, translocation and utilization. Recent developments in slow releasing, nano-fertilizers in agriculture, begins a new era for sustainable use and management of natural resources. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of nano-nitrogen usage on plant growth, yield attributes and sustaining rice production while optimizing fertilizer N application through conventional (prilled urea) and nano-N source under salt stress conditions. Results The strategic substitutions of traditional urea by nano-nitrogen was distributed from partial to complete with 33, 50, 66 and 100% applications. Further, the strategic substitutions were compared in saline (ECe ∼ 6.0 dSm− 1) and sodic stress (pH ∼ 9.1) conditions along with normal soils to dissect the beneficial response of nano-N in two rice varieties (CSR 30 and PB 1121). Salt stress affected the plant performance by decreasing leaf relative water content upto 10%, total chlorophyll content by 1.3–1.5%, leaf area upto 29.9%, gas exchange attributes by 10–39%, with concomitant yield reductions upto ∼ 4%. Collateral improvement in leaf greenness (SPAD index) crop growth rate and net assimilation rate was observed with foliar application of Nano-N. 0.2–1.64% enhancement in growth traits, 0.93–1.85% in physiological traits, and comparable yield gains with 100% recommended dose of prilled were comparative with nano-substitutions. Salt tolerant rice variety, CSR-30 performed better than PB 1121 with better expression of morphological, physiological and yield traits under stress conditions and nitrogen substitutions. Conclusions Overall, our experimental findings revealed agricultural use of nano-N in improving the plant physiological efficiency and optimizing rice yields with partial N substitution through nano fertilizers under salt stress conditions. These studies are further open for futuristic aspects of long term effects of nano-fertilizers on soil nutrient depletion in correlation to yield enhancement in salt affected soils.

Abstract Background Idiopathic CD4 lymphocytopenia (ICL) is an underdiagnosed immunodeficiency syndrome characterised by persistent low CD4 counts in the absence of HIV and other causes of lymphocytopenia. ICL patients are susceptible to opportunistic infections, with human papillomavirus, cryptococcal, and tuberculosis being the most common infections reported. Nocardiosis is rarely reported in patient with ICL. Case Presentation We herein discuss a 46-year-old female presented with complaints of weight loss, low grade fever and cough with expectoration from last four months. The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary nocardiosis and aspergillosis co-infection four years back; in addition she also had ICL. Subsequently, the patient was lost in follow-up and readmitted four years later. Bronchoalveolar lavage sample shows the presence of acid-fast bacilli in modified gram stain, which later identified as Nocardia otitidiscaviarum by metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Her CD4 counts were still found low (298 cells/mm3). After an initial improvement with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), she was commenced on indefinite secondary prophylaxis. Conclusions Nocardiosis without usual risk factors should be evaluated for ICL. This case emphasize the importance of periodic follow-up with CD4 count monitoring and secondary prophylaxis therapy to prevent recurrence or the emergence of new infections in ICL. Abstract Wastewater is a geospatially- and temporally-linked microbial fingerprint of a given population, making it a potentially valuable tool for tracking public health across locales and time. Here, we integrate targeted and bulk RNA sequencing (N = 2238 samples) to track the viral, bacterial, and functional content over geospatially distinct areas within Miami Dade County, USA, from 2020-2022. We used targeted amplicon sequencing to track diverse SARS-CoV-2 variants across space and time, and we found a tight correspondence with positive PCR tests from University students and Miami-Dade hospital patients. Additionally, in bulk metatranscriptomic data, we demonstrate that the bacterial content of different wastewater sampling locations serving small population sizes can be used to detect putative, host-derived microorganisms that themselves have known associations with human health and diet. We also detect multiple enteric pathogens (e.g., Norovirus) and characterize viral diversity across sites. Moreover, we observed an enrichment of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in hospital wastewater; antibiotic-specific ARGs correlated to total prescriptions of those same antibiotics (e.g Ampicillin, Gentamicin). Overall, this effort lays the groundwork for systematic characterization of wastewater that can potentially influence public health decision-making.

Abstract Field-effect transistors (FETs) based on two-dimensional materials (2DMs) with atomically thin channels have emerged as a promising platform for beyond-silicon electronics. However, low carrier mobility in 2DM transistors driven by phonon scattering remains a critical challenge. To address this issue, we propose the controlled introduction of localized tensile strain as an effective means to inhibit electron-phonon scattering in 2DM. Strain is achieved by conformally adhering the 2DM via van der Waals forces to a dielectric layer previously nanoengineered with a gray-tone topography. Our results show that monolayer MoS2 FETs under tensile strain achieve an 8-fold increase in on-state current, reaching mobilities of 185 cm²/Vs at room temperature, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The present work on nanotopographic grayscale surface engineering and the use of high-quality dielectric materials has the potential to find application in the nanofabrication of photonic and nanoelectronic devices.
