False Data Injection (FDI) attacks are one of the challenges that the modern power system, as a cyber-physical system, is encountering. Designing AC FDI attacks that accurately address the physics of the power systems could jeopardize the security of power systems as they can easily bypass the traditional Bad Data Detection (BDD) algorithm. Knowing the essence of the AC FDI attack and how they can be designed gives insight about detecting the system again these attacks. Moreover, recognition of the nature of these attacks, especially when they are designed optimally, is essential for benchmarking various defensive approaches to increase the resilience of power systems. This paper presents a unified approach to demonstrate the process of designing optimal AC FDI attack. In this connection, we first define the process of designing an AC-based FDI attack that satisfies AC power flow equations. We then formulate an optimization problem to design an optimal AC FDI attack that both satisfies AC power flow equations and overloads a specific line in the system. The objective function is defined to optimize the magnitude of the attack vector in such a way that it can evade residue-based BDD approaches. The proposed approach for designing AC FDI attacks is applied to the IEEE 118-bus test case system. Various comparisons are conducted to elaborate on the impact of optimally designing AC FDI attacks on the residual for the AC state estimation algorithm. Comparing the results of optimal and non-optimal AC FDI attacks demonstrates the impact on the difficulty of detecting FDI attacks and the importance of optimally designing these attacks.

AC optimal power flow (AC OPF) is a fundamental problem in power system operations. Accurately modeling the network physics via the AC power flow equations makes AC OPF a challenging nonconvex problem. To search for global optima, recent research has developed a variety of convex relaxations that bound the optimal objective values of AC OPF problems. The well-known QC relaxation convexifies the AC OPF problem by enclosing the non-convex terms (trigonometric functions and products) within convex envelopes. The accuracy of this method strongly depends on the tightness of these envelopes. This paper proposes two improvements for tightening QC relaxations of OPF problems. We first consider a particular nonlinear function whose projections are the nonlinear expressions appearing in the polar representation of the power flow equations. We construct a convex envelope around this nonlinear function that takes the form of a polytope and then use projections of this envelope to obtain convex expressions for the nonlinear terms. Second, we use certain characteristics of the sine and cosine expressions along with the changes in their curvature to tighten this convex envelope. We also propose a coordinate transformation that rotates the power flow equations by an angle specific to each bus in order to obtain a tighter envelope. We demonstrate these improvements relative to a state-of-the-art QC relaxation implementation using the PGLib-OPF test cases. The results show improved optimality gaps in 68% of these cases.

Power systems often include a specific set of lines that are crucial for the regular operations of the grid. Identifying the reasons behind the criticality of these lines is an important challenge in power system studies. When a line fails, the line outage distribution factor (LODF) quantifies the changes in power flow on the remaining lines. This paper proposes a network analysis from a local structural perspective to investigate the impact of local structural patterns in the underlying graph of power systems on the LODF of individual lines. In particular, we focus on graphlet analysis to determine the local structural properties of each line. This research analyzes potential connections between specific graphlets and the most critical lines based on their LODF. In this regard, we investigate N-1 and N-2 contingency analysis for various test cases and identifies the lines that have the greatest impact on the LODFs of other lines. We then determine which subgraphs contain the most significant lines. Our findings reveal that the most critical lines often belong to subgraphs with a less meshed but more radial structure. These findings are further validated through various test cases. Particularly, it is observed that networks with a higher percentage of ring or meshed subgraphs on their most important line (based on LODF) experience a lower LODF when that critical line is subject to an outage. Additionally, we investigate how the LODF of the most critical line varies among different test cases and examine the subgraph characteristics of those critical lines.

AC optimal power flow (AC OPF) is a fundamental problem in power system operation and control. To search for global optima, recent research has developed a variety of convex relaxations to bound the optimal objective values of AC OPF problems. However, the quality of these bounds varies for different test cases, suggesting that OPF problems exhibit a range of difficulties. Understanding this range of difficulty is helpful for improving relaxation algorithms. Power grids are naturally represented as graphs, with buses as nodes and power lines as edges. Graph theory offers various methods to measure power grid graphs, enabling researchers to characterize system structure and optimize algorithms. Leveraging graph theory-based algorithms, this paper presents an empirical study aiming to find correlations between optimality gaps and local structures in the underlying test case's graph. Network graphlets, which are induced subgraphs of a network, are used to investigate the correlation between power system topology and OPF relaxation tightness. Specifically, this paper examines how the existence of particular graphlets that are either too frequent or infrequent in the power system graph affects the tightness of the OPF convex relaxation. Numerous test cases are analyzed from a local structural perspective to establish a correlation between their topology and their OPF convex relaxation tightness.

As a highly complex and integrated cyber-physical system, modern power grids are exposed to cyberattacks. False data injection attacks (FDIAs), specifically, represent a major class of cyber threats to smart grids by targeting the measurement data's integrity. Although various solutions have been proposed to detect those cyberattacks, the vast majority of the works have ignored the inherent graph structure of the power grid measurements and validated their detectors only for small test systems with less than a few hundred buses. To better exploit the spatial correlations of smart grid measurements, this paper proposes a deep learning model for cyberattack detection in large-scale AC power grids using Chebyshev Graph Convolutional Networks (CGCN). By reducing the complexity of spectral graph filters and making them localized, CGCN provides a fast and efficient convolution operation to model the graph structural smart grid data. We numerically verify that the proposed CGCN based detector surpasses the state-of-the-art model by 7.86 in detection rate and 9.67 in false alarm rate for a large-scale power grid with 2848 buses. It is notable that the proposed approach detects cyberattacks under 4 milliseconds for a 2848-bus system, which makes it a good candidate for real-time detection of cyberattacks in large systems., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

False data injection attacks (FDIA) are a main category of cyber-attacks threatening the security of power systems. Contrary to the detection of these attacks, less attention has been paid to identifying the attacked units of the grid. To this end, this work jointly studies detecting and localizing the stealth FDIA in power grids. Exploiting the inherent graph topology of power systems as well as the spatial correlations of measurement data, this paper proposes an approach based on the graph neural network (GNN) to identify the presence and location of the FDIA. The proposed approach leverages the auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) type graph filters (GFs) which can better adapt to sharp changes in the spectral domain due to their rational type filter composition compared to the polynomial type GFs such as Chebyshev. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work based on GNN that automatically detects and localizes FDIA in power systems. Extensive simulations and visualizations show that the proposed approach outperforms the available methods in both detection and localization of FDIA for different IEEE test systems. False data injection attacks (FDIAs) represent a major class of attacks that aim to break the integrity of measurements by injecting false data into the smart metering devices in power grids. To the best of authors' knowledge, no study has attempted to design a detector that automatically models the underlying graph topology and spatially correlated measurement data of the smart grids to better detect cyber attacks. The contributions of this paper to detect and mitigate FDIAs are twofold. First, we present a generic, localized, and stealth (unobservable) attack generation methodology and publicly accessible datasets for researchers to develop and test their algorithms. Second, we propose a Graph Neural Network (GNN) based, scalable and real-time detector of FDIAs that efficiently combines model-driven and data-driven approaches by incorporating the inherent physical connections of modern AC power grids and exploiting the spatial correlations of the measurement. It is experimentally verified by comparing the proposed GNN based detector with the currently available FDIA detectors in the literature that our algorithm outperforms the best available solutions by 3.14%, 4.25%, and 4.41% in F1 score for standard IEEE testbeds with 14, 118, and 300 buses, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, journal

Power system N-x contingency analysis has inherent challenges due to its combinatorial characteristic where outages grow exponentially with the increase of x and N. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a method that utilizes Line Outage Distribution Factors (LODFs) and group betweenness centrality to identify subsets of critical branches. The proposed LODF metrics are used to select the high-impact branches. Based on each selected branch, the approach constructs the subgraph with parameters of distance and search level, while using branches' LODF metrics as the weights. A key innovation of this work is the use of the distance and search level parameters, which allow the subgraph to identify the most coupled critical elements that may be far away from a selected branch. Power systems are susceptible to natural threats including hurricanes and floods. Modern power grids are also increasingly threatened by cyber attacks. Existing approaches that help improve power system security and resilience may not be sufficient; this is evidenced by the continued challenge to supply energy to all customers during severe events. This paper presents an approach to address this challenge through bio-inspired power system network design to improve system reliability and resilience against disturbances. Inspired by naturally robust ecosystems, this paper considers the optimal ecological robustness that recognizes a unique balance between pathway efficiency and redundancy to ensure the survivability against disruptive events for given networks. This paper presents an approach that maximizes ecological robustness in transmission network design by formulating a mixed-integer nonlinear programming optimization problem with power system constraints. Identifying the multiple critical components in power systems whose absence together has severe impact on system performance is a crucial problem for power systems known as (N-x) contingency analysis. However, the inherent combinatorial feature of the N-x contingency analysis problem incurs by the increase of x in the (N-x) term, making the problem intractable for even relatively small test systems. We present a new framework for identifying the N-x contingencies that captures both topology and physics of the network. Graph theory provides many ways to measure power grid graphs, i.e. buses as nodes and lines as edges, allowing researchers to characterize system structure and optimize algorithms. This paper proposes a scalable approach based on the group betweenness centrality (GBC) concept that measures the impact of multiple components in the electric power grid as well as line outage distribution factors (LODFs) that find the lines whose loss has the highest impact on the power flow in the network. The proposed approach is a quick and efficient solution for identifying the most critical lines in power networks. The proposed approach is validated using various test cases, and results show that the proposed approach is able to quickly identify multiple contingencies that result in violations.

Optimal power flow (OPF) is a key problem in power system operations. OPF problems that use the nonlinear AC power flow equations to accurately model the network physics have inherent challenges associated with non-convexity. To address these challenges, recent research has applied various convex relaxation approaches to OPF problems. The QC relaxation is a promising approach that convexifies the trigonometric and product terms in the OPF problem by enclosing these terms in convex envelopes. The accuracy of the QC relaxation strongly depends on the tightness of these envelopes. This paper presents two improvements to these envelopes. The first improvement leverages a polar representation of the branch admittances in addition to the rectangular representation used previously. The second improvement is based on a coordinate transformation via a complex per unit base power normalization that rotates the power flow equations. The trigonometric envelopes resulting from this rotation can be tighter than the corresponding envelopes in previous QC relaxation formulations. Using an empirical analysis with a variety of test cases, this paper suggests an appropriate value for the angle of the complex base power. Comparing the results with a state-of-the-art QC formulation reveals the advantages of the proposed improvements.

Electricity usage is a major portion of utility bills and the best place to start lowering them. An effective home energy management approach is introduced to decrease customers' electricity bills by determining the optimal appliance scheduling under hourly pricing based demand response (DR) strategies. The proposed approach specifically addresses consumer comfort through acceptable appliance deferral times, within which their consumption can be shifted from the normal schedules. Electric vehicles (EVs), with vehicle to grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) abilities, Energy storage systems (ESS), and Renewable Energy Resource as a distributed generation are considered at the end-user premises to improve the energy management efficiency. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework is implemented to solve the proposed problem. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can reduce customers' electricity bill without sacrificing their comfort and fully exploit EVs and ESS capacities.

Incorporating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) incurs a high level of uncertainties to electric power systems. This level of uncertainties makes the conventional energy management methods inefficient and jeopardizes the security of distribution systems. In this connection, a scenario-based stochastic programming is introduced to harness uncertainties in the load, electricity price, and photovoltaic generation. Further, a hybrid evolutionary algorithm based on Grey Wolf Optimizer and Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithm is proposed to find the best operation cost, and Energy Not Supplied (ENS) as two important objective functions, which almost always are in stark contrast with each other. The proposed algorithm is applied to the modified IEEE 69-bus test system and the results are validated in terms of efficiency, which indicates a cogent trade-off between the fitness functions addressed above.

Optimal power flow (OPF) is a central problem in the operation of electric power systems. An OPF problem optimizes a specified objective function subject to constraints imposed by both the non-linear power flow equations and engineering limits. These constraints can yield non-convex feasible spaces that result in significant computational challenges. Despite these non-convexities, local solution algorithms actually find the global optima of some practical OPF problems. This suggests that OPF problems have a range of difficulty: some problems appear to have convex or "nearly convex" feasible spaces in terms of the voltage magnitudes and power injections, while other problems can exhibit significant non-convexities. Understanding this range of problem difficulty is helpful for creating new test cases for algorithmic benchmarking purposes. Leveraging recently developed computational tools for exploring OPF feasible spaces, this paper first describes an empirical study that aims to characterize non-convexities for small OPF problems. This paper then proposes and analyzes several medium-size test cases that challenge a variety of solution algorithms.

AC optimal power flow (AC~OPF) is a challenging non-convex optimization problem that plays a crucial role in power system operation and control. Recently developed convex relaxation techniques provide new insights regarding the global optimality of AC~OPF solutions. The quadratic convex (QC) relaxation is one promising approach that constructs convex envelopes around the trigonometric and product terms in the polar representation of the power flow equations. This paper proposes two methods for tightening the QC relaxation. The first method introduces new variables that represent the voltage magnitude differences between connected buses. Using "bound tightening" techniques, the bounds on the voltage magnitude difference variables can be significantly smaller than the bounds on the voltage magnitudes themselves, so constraints based on voltage magnitude differences can tighten the relaxation. Second, rather than a potentially weaker "nested McCormick" formulation, this paper applies "Meyer and Floudas" envelopes that yield the convex hull of the trilinear monomials formed by the product of the voltage magnitudes and trignometric terms in the polar form of the power flow equations.
