Phyllosticta is a cosmopolitan group of fungi found on various host plants, occurring as pathogens, endophytes and saprobes. Diseases caused by Phyllosticta commonly include leaf and fruit spots that affect economically important plants. The genus is characterized mainly by aseptate and hyaline conidia and ascospores. However, its conidia are surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath, with a single mucoid apical appendage while ascospores exhibit a mucoid cap at both ends. Given that many Phyllosticta taxa are cryptic and share similar morphological features, it is arduous to depict taxonomically relevant characters solely on the basis of morphological and ecological features. Coupled with morphological description, multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of species comprising complexes are used to broadly describe this genus and understand species boundaries. Despite several published taxonomic revisions and enumerations of Phyllosticta species, there is still considerable confusion when identifying these taxa. Herein, we introduce a new species (P. chiangmaiensis) and three new host records (P. capitalensis) in Thailand, and one new host and country record (P. citribrasiliensis) in Russia. We provide an updated phylogenetic tree, including all Phyllosticta species with sequence data.

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Three new genera, Cylindrotorula (Torulaceae), Scolecoleotia (Leotiales genus incertae sedis) and Xenovaginatispora (Lindomycetaceae) are introduced based on distinct phylogenetic lineages and unique morphologies. The data presented herein are based on morphological examination of fresh specimens, coupled with analysis of phylogenetic sequence data to better integrate taxa into appropriate taxonomic ranks and infer their evolutionary relationships.

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) is one of the most popular tropical fruits in Thailand. There is less number of studies associated with rambutan associated fungi in Thailand. During a survey to identify fungi associated with rambutan we identified D. rosae using multi-locus phylogeny (ITS-tub2-tef1-α-cal) and morphology. In this study, we provide the first report of Diaporthe rosae associated with branches of N. lappaceum in Thailand and in the world. This study provides a new host and a distribution record of D. rosae with an aim of promoting future studies in plant pathology. Identification of potential plant pathogens can help the rambutan growers to take precautions and control the disease at an early stage.

Scientific names are crucial for communicating knowledge concerning fungi and fungus-like organisms. In plant pathology, they link information regarding biology, host range, distribution and potential risk to agriculture and food security. In the past, delimitation among pathogenic taxa was primarily based on morphological characteristics. Due to distinct species sharing overlapping characteristics, the morphological identification of species is often neither straightforward nor reliable. Hence, the phylogenetic species concept based on molecular phylogenetic reconstructions gained importance. The present opinion discusses what a fungal species is and how identification of species in plant pathology has changed over the past decades. In this context, host-specialization and species complexes are discussed. Furthermore, species concepts in plant pathology are examined using case studies from Bipolaris, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Diaporthe, Diplodia, Meliola, Plasmopara, rust fungi and Trichoderma. Each entry contains a brief introduction to the genus, concepts used in species identification so far and the problems in describing a species followed by recommendations. The importance of correctly naming and identifying a species is addressed in the context of recent introductions, and we also discuss whether the introduction of new species in pathogenic genera has been overestimated. We also provide guidelines to be considered when introducing a new species in a plant pathogenic genus.

A new fungus, Muyocopron thailandica, collected from a dead plant sample in northern Thailand, is described and compared with other described species of Muyocopron. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses based on LSU and ITS sequence data indicated that M. thailandica forms a distinct lineage within the genus Muyocopron, and is closely related to M. castanopsis and M. lithocarpi. Muyocopron thailandica differs from these two species in having ellipsoid to subcylindrical asci, with a very short and thin pedicel and oval to obovoid ascospores. Asci and ascospores of M. thailandica are larger than those of M. castanopsis and M. lithocarpi. Morphological description and a detailed illustration of the new species are provided.

Fungal diversity notes is one of the important journal series of fungal taxonomy that provide detailed descriptions and illustrations of new fungal taxa, as well as providing new information of fungal taxa worldwide. This article is the 11th contribution to the fungal diversity notes series, in which 126 taxa distributed in two phyla, six classes, 24 orders and 55 families are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were mainly collected from Italy by Erio Camporesi and also collected from China, India and Thailand, as well as in some other European, North American and South American countries. Taxa described in the present study include two new families, 12 new genera, 82 new species, five new combinations and 25 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions as well as sexual-asexual reports. A new species, Colletotrichum artocarpicola, on Artocarpus heterophyllus from Chiang Rai, Thailand, is introduced using both morphological and molecular approaches. Combined phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS-1, ACT and TUB2 sequence data demonstrate that Colletotrichum artocarpicola is a distinct species within the gloeosporioides species complex. The new species is illustrated and compared with related taxa, and evidence of its pathogenicity is provided.

A new freshwater ascomycetous species, Wicklowia submersa was found on submerged wood in a freshwater stream in Krabi Province in southern Thailand. This is a second species in a monotypic family. Morphological examination and phylogenetic analysis of LSU and SSU sequence data support this new species as belonging to Wicklowia in the family Wicklowiaceae (Pleosporales). Wicklowia submersa possesses ascomata that are immersed, erumpent when mature, raised and visible as dark oval or slit-like structures on host surface. The bitunicate asci have well-developed ocular chambers when immature with a short pedicel. Ascospores are ellipsoidal-oblong, asymmetrical, 1-septate, guttulate when immature, hyaline, with a distinctly mucilaginous sheath. The characteristics of the asci, and ascospores which lack both apical and basal appendages distinguish it from the type species W. aquatic. A description, illustration and comparison of the new species is provided. The risk of introducing monotypic families is discussed.

Species confirmed with pathogenicity studies are denoted when data are available. Six of the genera are updated from previous entries as many new species have been described.

This is the twelfth contribution to the Fungal Diversity Notes series on fungal taxonomy, based on materials collected from many countries which were examined and described using the methods of morphology, anatomy, and strain culture, combined with DNA sequence analyses. 110 taxa are described and illustrated, including five new genera, 92 new species, eight new combinations and other taxonomic contributions (one new sequenced species, one new host and three new records) which are accommodated in 40 families and 1 incertae sedis in Dothideomycetes. Verruconis heveae, a new species accommodated in Sympoventuriaceae was isolated from dried latex on bark of a rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) collected from Phayao Province, Thailand. The comparison of its morphological characters distinguished V. heveae from other Verruconis species by having brown, woolly mycelium on the natural substrate and solitary, ellipsoidal to subglobose, 1–3 septate conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of a combined LSU and ITS dataset revealed a distinct lineage within Sympoventuriaceae.

The species of the family Massariaceae have been reported as hemibiotrophs, saprotrophs or weak pathogens. Massarioramusculicols chiangraiensis gen. et sp. nov. (Massariaceae) is introduced in this study to accommodate a taxon isolated from dead twigs of an unknown host, collected in Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis of large subunit (LSU) rRNA sequence data and morphological studies show the relationships of M . chiangraiensis with other genera in Massariaceae. Three genera Massaria , Massarioramusculicola and Neomassaria are accepted in Massariaceae and a key to genera of the family is provided. The genus Massarioramusculicola is clearly different from Massaria , whereas the latter has larger ascomata typically firmly embedded in pseudostromatic tissues intermixed with substrate cells, often surrounded by blackened marginal zones and covered by a dark clypeus, as well as brown to dark brown, larger, 3-disto- or euseptate ascospores. Massarioramusculicola can be distinguished from Neomassaria in having a peridium with two strata comprising dark brown to hyaline cells of textura angularis , rarely branched, septate trabeculae and 3-septate ascoapores.
