Notosuchians are a crocodyliform clade with a rich Gondwanan fossil record, especially in Cretaceous South American deposits. More than half of all described species come from South America and, around one quarter, have been discovered in the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group, Brazil). The large amount of notosuchian remains from this formation, along with its chronostratigraphic uncertainty, may be distorting notosuchian palaeodiversity estimates. In order to analyse how these factors could be biasing our interpretations, palaeodiversity estimates were performed excluding and including the Adamantina Formation occurrence data, as well as assigning them to the main age ranges that have been proposed for the formation (Turonian-Santonian and Campanian-Maastrichtian). Furthermore, as other factors might be influencing palaeodiversity fluctuations, a modelling approach was performed to assess which abiotic factors, sampling artefacts, or a combination of them, could be driving these palaeodiversity dynamics. The results showed that the Adamantina Formation is causing a Lagerstätte effect that is distorting palaeodiversity estimates and, depending on the age assigned to that formation, the tempo and magnitude of the maximum palaeodiversity reached during the Late Cretaceous substantially changes. The results also suggest that the temporal bias might affect palaeobiological reconstructions not only in notosuchians but also in other groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Upper Jurassic's central and northern sectors of the Bombarral Sub-basin are relatively poor in sauropod material, highlighting the specimens (mainly teeth) found in the Guimarota mine (Leiria) and the Andrés (Pombal) fossil site. The study of published and the unpublished sauropod material allows for a revision of the present state of sauropod diversity of the Bombarral Sub-basin. These new specimens come from Pombal, Leiria, Batalha, Porto de Mós, Alcobaça and Caldas da Rainha, and include an almost complete posterior or middle dorsal neural spine and a partial caudal series. The systematic re-evaluation of the sauropod record of this sector indicates the presence of turiasaurs, diplodocines, titanosauriforms and an indeterminate eusauropod form. During the last part of the twentieth century, the discovery of fossil vertebrates has increased significantly in the sediments cropping out in the central and northern sectors of the Bombarral Sub-basin (Alcobaça and Bombarral Formations), improving our understanding of the Late Jurassic faunas of the Lusitanian Basin. Introduction: Medicaid coverage is associated with longer appointment wait times, decreased access to care, and poorer health outcomes compared with private insurance across medical subspecialties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate new patient appointment wait times for subspecialty Orthopaedic care based on insurance type and to identify factors influencing these wait times., Methods: Orthopaedic physicians were identified using the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons patient-facing database in the fields of Adult Reconstruction, Foot and Ankle, Hand, Sports Medicine, Spine, Pediatric, and General Orthopaedic surgery. Mystery callers, posing as patients with either Medicaid or Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance, contacted physicians to request the next available new patient appointment. The business days until the first available new patient appointment were recorded and analyzed using a linear mixed Poisson model., Results: A total of 1,002 phone calls were made to 501 unique physicians in 47 states. Among the 349 physicians meeting inclusion criteria, 37% (n = 130) did not accept Medicaid. Medicaid patients experienced a 10% longer wait for a new patient appointment compared with patients with BCBS (incidence rate ratio: 1.10; CI: 1.05 to 1.15; P < 0.01) with mean wait times of 24.9 business days (SD ± 24) and 19.6 business days (SD ± 23), respectively. Increased waiting times were also associated with academic institutions ( P < 0.01), prolonged call times ( P < 0.01), and specific geographic regions ( P < 0.05). Our model achieved an R-squared value of 0.94, demonstrating strong explanatory power., Conclusion: Patients with Medicaid experience longer wait times and decreased access to care when scheduling an appointment with an Orthopaedic surgeon compared with patients with private insurance. This may be due to reimbursement structures in Medicaid that do not cover the full cost of treatment. Introduction and Objectives: Management in recent-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is to achieve sinus rhythm (SR) by cardioversion (CV). However, frequently SR is spontaneously restored, making scheduled admission unnecessary and causing misutilization of healthcare resources. Emerging medical technology allows accurate heart rhythm monitoring. This study evaluated this technology in these patients, preventing unnecessary admission and providing an earlier management., Methods: A multicenter study was designed including patients with AF scheduled for elective electrical CV. Patients submitted ECG recordings to a central CoreLab daily, twice a day and whenever they present symptoms, until CV (spontaneous or scheduled) and a week afterwards. Whenever a spontaneous conversion to SR was detected, investigators were contacted to confirm SR and abort admission. Patients' satisfaction was evaluated using a test for perceived utility, convenience, and accessibility., Results: 74 patients were enrolled (age 62±10 years). Twenty-two patients (30%) showed spontaneous conversion to SR. A total of 22 admissions and 16 transesophageal echocardiograms were prevented. Among 52 patients admitted for CV, 45 (88%) were discharged in SR. During follow-up after conversion to SR (spontaneous or electrical), recurrences of AF occurred in 24 patients (34%). At the end of the follow-up 51 patients (69%) remained in SR. The CoreLab received 93% of the expected ECG transmissions. Patient's overall satisfaction score was 9.1 over 10., Conclusion: Digital devices for heart rhythm monitoring can optimize the management of AF patients scheduled for elective CV, preventing unnecessary admissions and providing a more rational use of healthcare resources., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier España, S.L.U. The eusuchian crocodyliforms recorded in the Eocene levels of the Spanish Duero Basin belong to three lineages: Planocraniidae, with the species Duerosuchus piscator; Alligatoroidea, represented by several specimens of the genus Diplocynodon; and Crocodyloidea, which includes several specimens traditionally attributed to Asiatosuchus. The genus Asiatosuchus, established in 1940 based on a middle Eocene species from Mongolia, has subsequently served as a wastebasket taxon for Paleogene remains belonging to several species, not only from Asia but also belonging to the European and North American records. Many of these species are known by highly fragmentary remains, sharing the presence of characters such as a flat and triangular skull, and long symphyses in the lower jaw, recognized as characteristic for the crocodyloids. In addition to isolated cranial remains, among the material traditionally attributed to Asiatosuchus at the Duero Basin stands out a nearly complete skull and a left mandible, from the middle Eocene area of Casaseca de Campeán (Zamora Province). The present study analyses in detail these specimens, previously reported during the 1980s, but analyzed in a very preliminary way. They are included for the first time in a phylogenetic analysis to establish the systematic position of this Spanish form. Trees have a distinctive and generally long juvenile period during which vegetative growth rate is rapid and floral organs do not differentiate. Among trees, the juvenile period can range from 1 year to 15-20 years, although with some forest tree species, it can be longer. Vegetative propagation of trees is usually much easier during the juvenile phase than with mature phase materials. Therefore, reversal of maturity is often necessary in order to obtain materials in which rooting ability has been restored. Micrografting has been developed for trees to address reinvigoration/rejuvenation of elite selections to facilitate vegetative propagation. Generally, shoots obtained after serial grafting have increased rooting competence and develop juvenile traits; in some cases, graft-derived shoots show enhanced in vitro proliferation. Recent advances in graft signaling have shown that several factors, e.g., plant hormones, proteins, and different types of RNA, could be responsible for changes in the scion. The focus of this review includes (1) a discussion of the differences between the juvenile and mature growth phases in trees, (2) successful restoration of juvenile traits through micrografting, and (3) the nature of the different signals passing through the graft union.

Olive ( Olea europaea L.) is the most characteristic and important oil crop of the Mediterranean region. Traditional olive cultivation is based on few tens cultivars of ancient origin. To improve this crop, novel selections with higher tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress, adaptable to high-density planting systems and resilient to climate change are needed; however, breeding programs are hindered by the long juvenile period of this species and few improved genotypes have been released so far. Genetic transformation could be of great value, in the near future, to develop new varieties or rootstocks in a shorter time; in addition, it has currently become an essential tool for functional genomic studies. The recalcitrance of olive tissues to their in vitro manipulation has been the main bottleneck in the development of genetic transformation procedures in this species; however, some important traits such as fungal resistance, flowering or lipid composition have successfully been manipulated through the genetic transformation of somatic embryos of juvenile or adult origin, providing a proof of the potential role that this technology could have in olive improvement. However, the optimization of these protocols for explants of adult origin is a prerequisite to obtain useful materials for the olive industry. In this review, initially, factors affecting plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis are discussed. Subsequently, the different transformation approaches explored in olive are reviewed. Finally, transgenic experiments with genes of interest undertaken to manipulate selected traits are discussed.
