The advancement and intensification of industrial and mining activities has generated a series of impacts on natural ecosystems, combined with the inappropriate use of agrochemicals and the erroneous disposal of electronic products, contributing to soil contamination with a diversity of chemical elements, including heavy metals. Due to this, this work aimed to evaluate the effect of increasing dosages of nickel on the anatomy, biochemistry and oxidative system of Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), a forest species from the Amazon, seeking to indicate the potential use of this species in phytoremediation programs. of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The seeds were grown under a constant temperature of 28°C, relative humidity (RH) of 90% with a 12-hour photoperiod for 43 days. The experimental design used was randomized blocks (DBC), with five treatments (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mg.L-1 of Nickel), with six replications. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were tested for significant differences using the Tukey test at 5% significance. Changes in the anatomy of the different organs were observed, with differences in the cells in the central region of the leaf, the stem and the root. The concentration of total carbohydrates had no statistical differences with the application of nickel, however changes were observed in photosynthetic pigments, reducing sugars and sucrose as an adaptive form to nickel. The increase in nickel dosages was accompanied by the synthesis of ammonium, amino acids and proline in the root, while the synthesis of glycine was reduced. In the leaf, there was an increase in amino acids with an increase in metal, accompanied by a decrease in glycine. The plant antioxidant defense system was efficient in attenuating the toxic effects of ROS, with significant actions of CAT and SOD enzymes in the root, while the leaf had the main action of APX and CAT. The cultivation of mahogany plants can be advocated to mitigate Ni pollution in these areas, as this forest species has a particular characteristic of resistance to stressful conditions in contact with the heavy metal.

Objective: to identify experiences and feelings on the organ donation process, from the perspective of a relative of an organ donor in a transplant unit., Method: this was exploratory research using a qualitative approach, performed with seven family members of different organ donors, selected by a lottery. Sociodemographic data and the experiences regarding the donation process were collected through semi-structured interviews. The language material was transcribed and submitted to content analysis., Results: poor sensitivity of the medical staff communicating the relative's brain death--the potential donor--and the lack of socio-emotional support prior to the situation experienced by the family was highlighted by participants., Conclusions: the study identified the need to provide social-emotional support for families facing the experience of the organ donation process. From these findings, other care and management practices in health must be discussed to impact the strengthening of the family ties, post-donation, as well as the organ procurement indexes.

Objective: To describe the social representations of illness among people with chronic kidney disease undergoing haemodialysis., Method: Descriptive, qualitative research, anchored on the social representations theory. This study was conducted in the municipality of Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, with 23 adults with chronic kidney disease. Data were collection between February and November 2012 by means of a semi-structured interview, and analyzed using Content Analysis., Results: The interviews led to the categories "the meaning of kidney disease": awareness of finitude, and "survival": the visible with chronic kidney disease. The representation of illness unveiled a difference and interruption in life projects, and haemodialysis meant loss of freedom, imprisonment and stigma., Conclusion: Family ties and the individuals´ social role are determining representations for healthcare.

Introduction: The Brazilian National System of Transplantation and the Ministry of Health in Brazil establish procedures and effective actions for occupational health care so that there are increasing numbers of organ and tissue donations., Objective: This study analyzes the performance of social workers at the Intrahospital Donation of Organs and Tissues for Transplantation, Clinical Hospital, State University of Campinas, Brazil (CIHDOTT)., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the number of potential cornea donors, effective donations, family refusal, and the reasons for nonimplementation of the donations in 2009 (period studied with the presence of social workers) compared with 2006 (period studied without the presence of social workers)., Results: Data analysis revealed that in 2006 there were 141 potential cornea donors achieving 35 (25%) donations and 106 (75%) refusals. In 2009 there were 73 potential donors with 25 (34%) donations and 48 (66%) refusals. The causes of family refusal prevalent in both periods were similar: 65% from indecision and 25% from the family's wishes to maintain the patient's body intact., Conclusion: The performance of social workers in this case was satisfactory, achieving an increase in donations and reducing the number of patients awaiting corneal transplantation while promoting their quality of life., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Describe the implantation of a new process of management of the nursing assistant rest scale of a hospitalization unit of a universitarian hospital. It is presented the reality before the proposal, when the rests were distributed along the week; the reasons that took to the proposition of the new method and the working of the new scale, with rests in weekends and holidays. Among the benefits already seen include: bigger number of professionals working during the days of bigger work flow; more time of leisure of the workers with their families; bigger personal integration and professional of the group; scales organized for a year, which allows the employee plan his vacation, rests and studies; and bigger satisfaction with the work, with the new scale being considered a professional conquest.

Through in vitro studies, several factors have been reported as modulators of GLUT4 gene expression. However, the role(s) of each potential GLUT4 modulator is not completely understood in the in vivo setting. The present study has investigated the hypothesis that beta-adrenergic stimulation participates in modulation of GLUT4 expression during fasting and refeeding. As such, GLUT4 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein were investigated in insulin-sensitive tissues during a 48-hour fast. In addition, the effects of 8-hour refeeding on GLUT4 mRNA in the gastrocnemius muscle and interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT) were investigated. Whether beta-adrenoceptor blockade by propranolol (20 mg/kg) treatment influenced the responsiveness to fasting/refeeding was also investigated. The results show that fasting repressed GLUT4 gene and protein expression in BAT, white adipose tissue, and soleus muscle, but had no effect on the gastrocnemius muscle. Refeeding induced a rapid overexpression of GLUT4 mRNA in both gastrocnemius (approximately 25%, P < .05) and BAT (approximately 200%, P < .001). Propranolol treatment induced an increase (approximately 60%, P < .05) in GLUT4 mRNA at the end of the fasting period. In contrast, propranolol treatment attenuated GLUT4 mRNA induction after refeeding; the latter may be due to attenuation of postprandial insulin levels. These results suggest that sympathetic activity is important for the repression of GLUT4 gene expression during fasting. In contrast, sympathetic control of the GLUT4 gene seems to be overbalanced by metabolic/hormonal modulators during refeeding stage. Taken together, the results suggest that feeding behavior influences GLUT4 gene expression pattern through changes in sympathetic activity, especially during long-term starvation periods.
