Resumo Liquens são mundialmente conhecidos como indicadores de qualidade ambiental porque são sensíveis às modificações do ambiente, especialmente as de origem antrópica. Neste estudo foram avaliadas a riqueza, a composição e a cobertura de comunidades de liquens corticícolas em nove municípios com diferentes graus de urbanização e verificadas as principais semelhanças na composição das espécies entre as comunidades. Os locais amostrados estavam distribuídos em uma matriz rural, rural/urbana ou urbana/ industrial. Dez forófitos foram amostrados em cada área, utilizando o método do elástico. Ao total, foram identificadas 215 espécies de liquens, das quais nove são novas ocorrências, sendo quatro para o Brasil e cinco para o Rio Grande do Sul. Com o aumento da urbanização, observou-se uma simplificação da estrutura da comunidade de liquens, com diminuição da riqueza e mudanças na composição das espécies. Além disso, na matriz urbana/industrial poucas espécies apresentaram alta porcentagem de cobertura e, em conjunto, somaram grande importância na comunidade. Maior homogeneidade da composição de espécies foi encontrada em áreas mais próximas e inseridas na matriz urbano/industrial. Este estudo demonstrou que a arborização urbana é um fator importante para o estabelecimento das espécies de liquens, ao longo de um gradiente de urbanização.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-02-01 Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. The use of lichens as ecological surrogates has been an important tool to evaluate the impact of air pollution in both ecosystem and human health but remains underused in the subtropics due to lack of knowledge. Aiming to support the application of lichen as ecological surrogates of the effects of air pollution in the subtropics, we hypothesized that urbanization was an important driver of changes on lichen diversity, composition, and vitality. For that, we quantified several lichen diversity metrics (richness, cover, and community composition) and photobiont vitality in relation to atmospheric pollution or its surrogates (modeled pollutant gases, pollutants in lichen thallus, and land cover). We confirmed that air pollution was a key driver for lichen diversity. Changes in lichen community composition and vitality were very significantly related to air pollution and integrated the effect of multiple stressors (particulate matter, NOx, and Cu), thus being powerful ecological indicators of air pollution in the subtropics.

A eumelanistic chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarcticus was registered at Penguin Island, Maritime Antarctica during the 2014/2015 austral summer. Melanism mutations are quite rare for this species, and even though former informal records have been made, as far as we know, this is the first official report of eumelanism in chinstrap penguins.

Air pollution and the urban heat island effect are known to directly affect ecosystems in urban areas. Lichens, which are widely known as good ecological indicators of air quality and of climatic conditions, can be a valuable tool to monitor environmental changes in urban environments. The objective of this work was to select lichen functional traits and functional groups that can be used as ecological indicators of the effects of urbanization, with emphasis in the Southern subtropics, where this had never been done. For that, we assessed lichen functional composition in urban sites with different population density, which was considered as proxy for grouping sites in two levels of urbanization (low and medium/high). This a priori grouping was based on their significantly differences on air pollutants and land cover. Urbanization and air pollution showed to affect all lichen functional traits, with different responses depending on the functional group. Medium/high density urbanization was associated to an increase on the mean relative abundance of lichens with chlorococcoid green algae, foliose narrow lobes, soredia as the main reproduction strategy, pruinose thallus and containing secondary metabolites for chemical protection. Lower density urbanization showed a higher relative frequency of cyanolichens and lichens with Trentepohlia as the main algae, loosely attached crustose thallus and isidia as the main reproductive structure. The differences found on photobiont and growth form traits in response to the environmental variables used as proxies of microclimatic conditions (forest cover and number of trees around the sampling units), enabled us to detect the urban heat island effect (drier conditions in more urbanized sites).

Abstract: Specimens of Leptogium collected in ten localities from the State of Rio Grande do Sul were studied. Sixteen species were found of 28 records mentioned to the state, which represents around 57% of the Leptogium diversity known for Rio Grande do Sul. Leptogium exaratum is proposed as a new species. Leptogium atlanticum, L. milligranum and L. vesiculosum are reported for the first time to the state. The lectotype of L. javanicum is reported here and detailed descriptions are provided to the examined specimens. An identification key is showed with all the 28 mentioned species of Leptogium. It is the first published taxonomic key for Leptogium from Rio Grande do Sul, the State with the highest diversity of this genus in Brazil.

Based on the need to monitor air pollution and on the importance of doing it with biological organisms, the present work had as main objective to assess air quality in urban areas through lichen transplants. Besides, we also tested whether there were differences among the studied sites, aiming to point out the main pollution characteristics of the areas. The monitoring was carried out in seven cities, which varied from mainly rural to mainly industrial, in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The foliose lichen Parmotrema tinctorum was used as the biomonitor species. Physiological tests and contents of sulphur and heavy metals were measured in the lichen thalli. Other pollutants assessed through air samplers were available for some cities, and modeled concentrations of fine particulate matter and nitrogen oxides for all sites. The effect of air pollution negatively reflected on the physiology parameters of the lichen and the concentration of all heavy metals increased after exposure, especially in the industrial sites. We generated a profile of air pollutants and pointed out that Charqueadas and Esteio had the worst air quality. Since they have high demographic densities, the results are of great public health concern and could be guidelines for future studies.

Lichens are widely used to assess the consequences of human activities, including urbanization, which has strong influence on the structure of their communities. Our hypothesis is that increasing human population density and modifying land use and cover cause structural and functional changes in lichen communities. The main objective of this study was to evaluate changes in lichen species composition and functional patterns along a gradient of urbanization in southern Brazil. The study was carried out in nine sites, classified a priori according to the matrix where they were inserted, as rural, suburban and urban, in which the lichen community was sampled in 10 phorophytes using the rubber band method. Several environmental variables and lichen functional traits were quantified. The sites inserted in the rural matrix were characterized by phorophytes with higher bark pH, higher percentage of agriculture areas in the vicinity of the sampling sites, and by the following functional groups: loosely attached crustose thalli, Trentepohlia photobiont, reproduction by thallus fragmentation and apothecia. The sites located in the urban matrix showed greater demographic density, vehicular fleet, percentage of urban and open fields coverage, foliose narrow lobed thalli, photobiont Chlorococcoid algae and reproduction by soredia. Regarding lichen functional patterns, sites located in the rural matrix presented higher species richness, functional richness, evenness and diversity. Based on our results, we showed that urbanization has a strong influence on lichen communities, since it has affected both species composition and functional patterns, besides species richness. The combined use of species composition, richness, functional composition and functional indexes proved to be effective in obtaining detailed information on the changes suffered by lichen communities and can be used as a tool to evaluate the environmental quality in urban environments.

The diversity of Leptogium has been underestimated in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Nine species are being reported for the first time to the state, including L. microcarpum , as new record to Brazil; and L. cyanizum , as new record to the American continent. Furthermore, L. hondae , L. moluccanum var. denticulatum and L. quilombensis are proposed as new to science. The first key to species of Leptogium is provided for this region, which can also be used for surrounding regions in Brazil.

Understanding community assembly patterns with regard to functional traits, which may be common to different species, allows us to compare ecological communities in a wider range of environmental and phytogeographic conditions. Moreover, a functional approach may facilitate the comprehension of the relation between biotic changes and ecosystem functions in complex systems such as tropical forests. Considering the lack of information in relation to the influence of environmental conditions on lichen functional traits, on lichen functional patterns in tropical forests and the potential usage of this approach in bioindication studies, this paper aims at (i) determining the functional structure of the lichen communities along the forest succession gradient, (ii) assessing the relation of lichen functional traits to this gradient and (iii) verifying the potential of using lichen functional traits as indicators of successional stages in tropical rainforests. Lichens were sampled in 24 sampling units of three successional stages (6–10; 12–20; and 40–60 years of recovering). The results corroborated our main hypothesis that the functional structure of the lichen communities responds to structural changes along a forest regeneration gradient. Growth forms (foliose, fruticose and crustose) as well as some reproductive trait states (lirella, isidia and perithecia) were the most suitable lichen traits to be used as indicators of forest succession in the southern edge of the Atlantic Rainforest. Lirella, fruticose and foliose were more related to earlier successional stages; isidia was more related to intermediate stages, while perithecia and crustose were more related to older stages. These results reinforce the ability of lichens to be used as bioindicators of forest conditions.

Background and aims – The corticolous microlichens are the greatest group of lichens in the world and also the least known. For this reason intensive studies on this group are seriously needed. Based on this necessity, the main objective of this paper is to present new records of corticolous microlichen species for South America, Brazil, the Southern region of Brazil and the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Methods – The species were collected in three different forest types: native Araucaria forest, Atlantic rainforest and riparian forests from the Pampa Biome. Key results – A total of 43 new records of corticolous microlichen species are here presented. Six species are new reports for South America: Cryptothelium cecidiogenum Aptroot & Lücking, Distopyrenis composita R.C.Harris, Graphis pseudocinerea Lücking & Umaña, Herpothallon echinatum Aptroot, Lücking & Will-Wolf, Lecanora thysanophora R.C.Harris and Psoroglaena stigonemoides (Orange) Henssen. Two species are new records for Brazil: Pyrenula dissimulans (Müll.Arg.) R.C.Harris and Rinodina conradii Körb., while four are new occurrences for the state of Rio Grande do Sul: Graphis elongata Zenker, Graphis furcata Fée, Graphis longula Kremp. and Haematomma africanum (Steiner) Dodge. Thirty-one new records are as well reported here for the Southern region of Brazil. Conclusion – The high number of new crustose species records of this study greatly contributes to the current knowledge on lichens. Additionally, our study highlights the importance of conserving all kinds of forest environments, since they are important areas for lichen establishment and dispersion.

(A new species of Graphis [Graphidaceae: Lichenized Ascomycota] and a revised key of the genus in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil). In this paper we describe a new species of the lichen genus Graphis, namely G. suzanae Koch & Feuerstein. This species is characterized mainly by lirellae with entire labia, a partially exposed disc with orange pigment in the epithecium, a lateral thalline margin, a laterally carbonized excipulum, a clear hymenium, and transversely septate ascospores measuring 40–44 × 8–10 μm. The chemistry of the species was assessed through TLC analysis. A complete key with G. suzanae and 56 more species of Graphis that where previously recorded to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, is included.

Aiming to characterize the structure of the arboreal community in a riverine forest remnant of the Taquari river, State of Rio Grande do Sul, 42 sampling units of 100 m2 (10 × 10 m) were located. Phytosociological parameters were also assessed and the indexes of Shannon diversity (H') and Pielou evenness (J) were evaluated. A total of 39 species, 21 families, 2.83 nats ind-1 for H' and 0.77 for J were recorded. Among the species found, the endemic Callisthene inundata O.L. Bueno, A.D. Nilson & R.G. Magalh. and Picrasma crenata (Vell.) Engl. are included in the list of endangered species. The density found was of 1,557.14 ind ha-1. Luehea divaricata Mart. and Lonchocarpus nitidus Benth. showed the highest indexes of importance values. Besides contributing to the knowledge of species distribution and community structure, this study points out the need for conservation of existing native forest remnants.
