Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is an emerging technology that repurposes a fiber-optic cable as a dense array of strain sensors. This technology repeatedly pings a fiber with laser pulses, measuring optical phase changes in Rayleigh backscattered light. DAS is beneficial for studies of fine-scale processes over multi-kilometer distances, long-term time-lapse monitoring, and deployment in logistically challenging areas (e.g., high temperatures, power limitations, land access barriers). These benefits have motivated a decade of applications in subsurface imaging and microseismicity monitoring for energy production and carbon sequestration. DAS arrays have recorded microearthquakes, regional earthquakes, teleseisms, and infrastructure signals. Analysis of these wavefields is enabling earthquake seismology where traditional sensors were sparse, as well as structural and near-surface seismology. These studies improved understanding of DAS instrument response through comparison with traditional seismometers. More recently, DAS has been used to study cryosphere systems, marine geophysics, geodesy, and volcanology. Further advancement of geoscience using DAS requires several community efforts related to instrument access, training, outreach, and cyberinfrastructure. ▪ DAS is a seismic acquisition technology repurposing fiber optics as arrays of dynamic strain sensors at 1- to 10-m spacing over kilometers. ▪ Easy DAS installations have availed time-lapse geophysical sensing in formerly inaccessible sites: urban, icy, and offshore areas. ▪ High-frequency wavefields recorded by DAS are analyzed with array-based methods to characterize seismic sources and image the subsurface. ▪ DAS has shown low-frequency sensitivity in the laboratory and field, for slow hydrodynamic and geodynamic processes.

We compare the performance of a downhole distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) fiber-optic array with that of conventional geophones. The downhole collocated arrays are part of the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) geothermal experiment, in which stimulation of the rock volume in an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) causes microseismic events. The DAS acquisition system yields data sampled at every 1 m at 2000 samples per second for the entire length of the well, spanning to a depth of 985 m from the surface. Whereas single DAS channels are substantially noisier than geophones at the same location, their large number and spatial coherency allow for the application of effective array processing techniques. We follow a complete workflow for the fiber-optic array: velocity model building, event detection, event location, and magnitude estimation. Estimated velocity models agree well with sonic logging in a nearby well and map a granitic contact accurately. Detection performance is somewhat worse than geophones and yields magnitude completeness of −1.4 compared to −1.7 for geophones. Using a single vertical fiber array, we cannot retrieve the azimuth of the events relative to the well. However, we can very accurately estimate their depth and horizontal distance from the array. Magnitude estimation with DAS approaches geophone results to within a standard deviation of M=0.115 and negligible mean difference. The DAS processing results outperform a regional and local surface array, consolidated with a shallow borehole sensor. Although downhole geophones in the FORGE experimental layout performed better, DAS holds several critical practical benefits that were not demonstrated. Thanks to its heat resistance, it can be deployed much closer to the reservoir; fibers can be deployed along cased active wells, eliminating the need for a dedicated monitoring well; the permanently installed fiber can be used for years or decades. Therefore, we argue that DAS holds vast potential for long-term monitoring of EGS projects.

SUMMARYIn December, 2009, a rare sequence of earthquakes initiated within the weakly extended Western Rift of the East African Rift system in the Karonga province of northern Malawi, providing a unique opportunity to characterize active deformation associated with intrabasinal faults in an early-stage rift. We combine teleseismic and regional seismic recordings of the largest events, InSAR imagery of the primary sequence, and recordings of aftershocks from a temporary (4-month) local network of six seismometers to delineate the extent and geometry of faulting. The locations of ∼1900 aftershocks recorded between January and May 2010 are largely consistent with a west-dipping normal fault directly beneath Karonga as constrained by InSAR and CMT fault solutions. However, a substantial number of epicentres cluster in an east-dipping geometry in the central part of the study area, and additional west-dipping clusters can be discerned near the shore of Lake Malawi, particularly in the southern part of the study area. Given the extensive network of hanging wall faults mapped in the Karonga region on the surface and in seismic reflection images, the distribution of events is strongly suggestive of multiple faults interacting to produce the observed deformation, and the InSAR data permit this but do not require it. We propose that fault interaction contributed to the seismic moment release as a series of Mw 5-to-6 events instead of a normal main shock–aftershock sequence. We find the depth of fault slip during the main shocks constrained by InSAR peaks at less than 6 km, while the majority of recorded aftershocks are deeper than 6 km. This depth discrepancy appears to be robust and may be explained by fault interaction. Structural complexities associated with fault interaction may have limited the extent of coseismic slip during the main shocks, which increased stress deeper than the coseismic slip zone on the primary fault and synthetic faults to the east, causing the energetic aftershock series. There is no evidence of deformation at the Rungwe volcanic province ∼50 km north of the earthquake sequence between 2007 and 2010, consistent with previous interpretations of no significant magmatic contribution during the sequence.

The sparsity of permanent seismic instrumentation in marine environments often limits the availability of subsea information on geohazards, including active fault systems, in both time and space. One sensing resource that provides observational access to the seafloor environment are existing networks of ocean bottom fiber optic cables; these cables, coupled to modern distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems, can provide dense arrays of broadband seismic observations capable of recording both seismic events and the ambient noise wavefield. Here, we report a marine DAS application which demonstrates the strength and limitation of this new technique on submarine structural characterization. Based on ambient noise DAS records on a 20 km section of a fiber optic cable offshore of Moss Landing, CA, in Monterey Bay, we extract Scholte waves from DAS ambient noise records using interferometry techniques and invert the resulting multimodal dispersion curves to recover a high resolution 2D shear-wave velocity image of the near seafloor sediments. We show for the first time that the migration of coherently scattered Scholte waves observed on DAS records can provide an approach for resolving sharp lateral contrasts in subsurface properties, particularly shallow faults and depositional features near the seafloor. Our results provide improved constraints on shallow submarine features in Monterey Bay, including fault zones and paleo-channel deposits, thus highlighting one of many possible geophysical uses of the marine cable network.

Human activity causes vibrations that propagate into the ground as high-frequency seismic waves. Measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread changes in human activity, leading to a months-long reduction in seismic noise of up to 50%. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record. While the reduction is strongest at surface seismometers in populated areas, this seismic quiescence extends for many kilometers radially and hundreds of meters in depth. This provides an opportunity to detect subtle signals from subsurface seismic sources that would have been concealed in noisier times and to benchmark sources of anthropogenic noise. We show the capabilities of a downhole Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) array in detecting, locating and characterizing low-magnitude earthquakes occurring in the vicinity of the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) site in Utah. 10.5 days of continuous data were acquired in a monitoring well at the FORGE geothermal site during the initial stimulation of an Enhanced Geothermal System in April-May 2019. Earthquake activity beneath Mineral Mountains, Utah also occurred within 10 km of the FORGE monitoring well. During the experiment, four events from those areas were cataloged by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. Our processing of DAS data, including template matching, finds 82 earthquakes during that period, of which 16 are visible on the regional network. The magnitude of completeness obtained by DAS processing is better by at least M=0.5 than the dense surface array around the FORGE site. While a single vertical DAS array is limited in terms of event location due to its azimuthal ambiguity, multiple DAS wells or a combination of a downhole array with surface stations or near-surface horizontal DAS could jointly resolve locations. Here we demonstrate the potential of DAS in teleseismic studies using the Goldstone OpticaL Fiber Seismic experiment in Goldstone, California. By analyzing teleseismic waveforms from the 10 January 2018 M7.5 Honduras earthquake recorded on ~5,000 DAS channels and the nearby broadband station GSC, we first compute receiver functions for DAS channels using the vertical-component GSC velocity as an approximation for the incident source wavelet. The Moho P-to-s conversions are clearly visible on DAS receiver functions. We then derive meter-scale arrival time measurements along the entire 20-km-long array. We are also able to measure path-averaged Rayleigh wave group velocity and local Rayleigh wave phase velocity. The latter, however, has large uncertainties. Our study suggests that DAS will likely play an important role in many fields of passive seismology in the near future.

Emerging distributed fiber-optic sensing technology coupled to existing subsea telecommunications cables enable access to meterscale, multi-kilometer aperture, broadband seismic array observations of ocean and solid earth phenomena. In this talk, we report on two multi-day Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) campaigns conducted in 2018 and 2019 with the Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) observatory tether cable. In both experiments, a DAS instrument located on shore was connected to a fiber inside the buried MARS cable and recorded a ~10,000-component, 20-kilometer-long, strain-rate array. We use the 8 TB DAS dataset to address three questions:1. How can seafloor DAS earthquake records inform offshore seismic hazard assessments? Offshore seismic hazards are poorly characterized despite dense coastal populations. The MARS DAS array captured multiple unaliased earthquake recordings, which document phase conversions and abrupt S-wave delays of 0.25 s at mapped (and unmapped) faults that transect the cable. Minor earthquakes in Northern California produce seismic waves in the range 0.5 - 50 Hz, which interact with submarine faults lying just offshore. Spectral ratios and wavefield synthetics are used to explore how seismic waves from well-characterized earthquakes interact with poorly-characterized subsea faults.2. How are ocean microseisms and other coastal processes recorded by subsea DAS? Horizontal seabed ambient noise recorded with the MARS DAS array matches the expected dispersion of primary microseisms (f~0.05-0.15 Hz) induced by shoaling ocean surface waves, but at a higher band than onshore observations. Separation of incoming and outgoing waves recorded over the DAS array validates the Longuet-Higgins-Hasselmann theory that bi-directional ocean wind-waves undergo nonlinear wave interaction, producing secondary microseisms (f~0.4-1.5 Hz), even when the outgoing energy is observed to be 3. How is the coastal seafloor structure organized from shore to shelf break? The northern continental shelf of Monterey Bay is comprised of allochthonous Cretaceous granite overlain by marine sediments of varying thickness, and is crosscut by abandoned (and subsequently filled) paleochannels. Noise interferometry applied to the full MARS DAS dataset in the 0.25 - 5 Hz range retrieves Scholte waves, which are dispersive and coherent over 2 - 6 kilometers. We apply fundamental mode dispersion (1.5D) imaging to subarray noise correlations in order to understand the sediment thickness distribution across the shelf. Our model is compared with recent seismic reflection profiling conducted by the USGS California Seafloor Mapping Program.

The Tatun geothermal system, located in northern Taiwan, is hosted by the Plio-Pleistocene Tatun volcanic group, consisting dominantly of andesitic lavas, domes and pyroclastic flows. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, geophysical surveys, and the drilling of numerous exploration and temperature gradient wells were conducted at Tatun under the leadership of the Mineral Research and Service Organization (MRSO), the predecessor to the geothermal group at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Deep (1–2 km) wells encountered commercial temperatures (200–300 °C) in the Matsao area, but these initial exploration efforts were discouraged by the presence of very acidic (pH 2 as well as HCl. More reduced gases are encountered on the flanks of the system, suggesting that water-rock interaction may have at least partly neutralized the volcanic-derived fluids on the margins of this geothermal system. Scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and ITRI have been working together to develop an updated evaluation of the Tatun geothermal system, with the goal of evaluating the geothermal resource potential of the NE margins of the Tatun geothermal system (Zone C), just outside of Yangmingshan National Park. This study provides a review and analysis of existing and new fluid geochemistry data, describes new magnetotelluric data and associated 3-D modeling conducted at LBNL, and incorporates these data and analyses with information from previous studies to create an updated conceptual model for the Tatun geothermal system, with a focus on the Zone C region. These data all suggest that the Zone C area is located on the margin of the main Tatun geothermal system. An exploration well drilled by ITRI will provide important constraints regarding the thermal regime and fluid compositions for this marginal portion of the system.

Marine observations with optics Placing sensors on the seafloor is difficult, but a sensor network has huge potential for observing processes occurring both below and above the seafloor. Lindsey et al. measured acoustic vibrations collected by attaching a laser to the Monterey Accelerated Research System's subsea optical fiber during a maintenance period (see the Perspective by Jousset). Acoustic waves were monitored by changes in laser light along the cable. The observations from just a few days allowed mapping of an unknown fault system and detection of several dynamic processes in the water column above. Science , this issue p. 1103 ; see also p. 1076

Author(s): Lindsey, NJ; Kaven, JO; Davatzes, N; Newman, GA | Abstract: Previous magnetotelluric (MT) studies of the high-temperature Coso geothermal system in California identified a subvertical feature of lowresistivity (2-5Ohmm) and appreciable lateral extent (g1 km) in the producing zone of the East Flank field. However, these models could not reproduce gross 3-D effects in the recorded data. We perform 3-D full-tensor inversion and retrieve a resistivity model that out-performs previous 2-D and 3-D off-diagonal models in terms of its fit to the complete 3-D MT data set as well as the degree of modelling bias. Inclusion of secondary Zxx and Zyy data components leads to a robust east-dip (60°) to the previously identified conductive East Flank reservoir feature, which correlates strongly with recently mapped surface faults, downhole well temperatures, 3-D seismic reflection data, and local microseismicity. We perform synthetic forward modelling to test the best-fit dip of this conductor using the response at a nearby MT station. We interpret the dipping conductor as a fractured and fluidized compartment, which is structurally controlled by an unmapped blind East Flank fault zone.

We present one of the first case studies demonstrating the use of distributed acoustic sensing deployed on regional unlit fiber-optic telecommunication infrastructure (dark fiber) for broadband seismic monitoring of both near-surface soil properties and earthquake seismology. We recorded 7 months of passive seismic data on a 27 km section of dark fiber stretching from West Sacramento, CA to Woodland, CA, densely sampled at 2 m spacing. This dataset was processed to extract surface wave velocity information using ambient noise interferometry techniques; the resulting VS profiles were used to map both shallow structural profiles and groundwater depth, thus demonstrating that basin-scale variations in hydrological state could be resolved using this technique. The same array was utilized for detection of regional and teleseismic earthquakes and evaluated for long period response using records from the M8.1 Chiapas, Mexico 2017, Sep 8th event. The combination of these two sets of observations conclusively demonstrates that regionally extensive fiber-optic networks can effectively be utilized for a host of geoscience observation tasks at a combination of scale and resolution previously inaccessible.

Global climate change has resulted in a warmer Arctic, with projections indicating accelerated modifications to permafrost in the near future. The thermal, hydrological, and mechanical physics of permafrost thaw have been hypothesized to couple in a complex fashion but data collection efforts to study these feedbacks in the field have been limited. As a result, laboratory and numerical models have largely outpaced field calibration datasets. We present the design, execution, and initial results from the first decameter-scale controlled thawing experiment, targeting coupled thermal/mechanical response, particularly the temporal sequence of surface subsidence relative to permafrost degradation at depth. The warming test was conducted in Fairbanks, AK, and utilized an array of in-ground heaters to induce thaw of a ~11 × 13 × 1.5 m soil volume over 63 days. The 4-D temperature evolution demonstrated that the depth to permafrost lowered 1 m during the experiment. The resulting thaw-induced surface deformation was ~10 cm as observed using a combination of measurement techniques. Surface deformation occurred over a smaller spatial domain than the full thawed volume, suggesting that gradients in cryotexture and ice content were significant. Our experiment provides the first large field calibration dataset for multiphysics thaw models.

The magnetotelluric (MT) method is important for exploration of geothermal systems. The information on the Earth's resistivity obtained with MT methods has been valuable in imaging the hydrothermal alteration of such systems. Given its ability to recover complex resistivity models for the Earth, three-dimensional (3D) MT inversion has become a common practice in geothermal exploration. However, 3D inversion is a time-consuming and complicated procedure that relies on computer algorithms to search for a model that can explain the measured data to a sufficient level. Furthermore, many elements of inversion require input from the practitioner, which can easily bias the results. Consequently, final 3D MT results depend on various factors, including the inversion code, the model mesh used to represent the Earth, data quality and processing, and constraints imposed during the inversion procedure. In this paper, to explore how this variability in 3D MT modeling impacts the final model, we invert MT data sets from the Krafla and Hengill geothermal areas in Iceland, using three different inversion codes. In each case, the modelers had the freedom to select a subset of the data and implement the inversion for the respective code in an optimized way. We compare the results from all the inversion codes, as well as consider the setup and assumptions made during the inversion process, all of which helps enhance the robustness and quality of the results. The comparison is done in multiple ways, using visual comparison of the recovered resistivity models, as well as comparing the structural similarities of the models by employing a structural correlation metric based on cross-gradients and other types of metrics for structural correlation. This approach highlights structures that are common in all three models, and implies that these structures are independent of the inversion code and necessary to fit the data. All modeling results from both Krafla and Hengill are consistent to first order, recovering a conductive layer on top of a resistive core typical of high temperature geothermal systems. For Hengill, the models show strong structural agreement, with all inversions recovering a moderately layered resistivity model but adding detail to previous work done in the area. Major differences are found in areas with coarse data coverage and hence questionable model resolution. Where the recovered structures in different models coincide, our confidence that these structures are well-constrained by the data is elevated, in spite of the different setup and assumptions in the codes these structures are required; so they can be interpreted in terms of geology with more certainty. Results from Krafla are not as consistent as results for Hengill, related in part to the Krafla data being nosier than the Hengill data. The models from Krafla have coinciding larger structures, but small-scale structures there are less coherent. One of the consistent structures in all the models is a conductive zone reaching from a depth of 5 km to shallower depths in the northern part of the area.

Krafla and Hengill volcanic complexes, located 300 km apart, are both known as high-temperature geothermal systems located within neo-volcanic zones of Iceland. This paper demonstrates the utilization of three-dimensional (3D) magnetotelluric (MT) inversions from three different inverse modeling algorithms, which leads to characterizing the electrical resistivity structure of geothermal reservoirs with a much greater level of confidence in accuracy and resolution than if a single algorithm was employed in the data interpretation. These are the first 3D MT inversions of a Krafla MT dataset. The inverted model of electrical resistivity is a classic example of a high-temperature hydrothermal system, with a highly resistive near-surface layer, identified as unaltered porous basalt, overlying a low resistivity cap corresponding to the smectite–zeolite zone. This layer is in turn underlain by a more resistive zone, identified as the epidote–chlorite zone, also called the resistive core, which is often associated with production of geothermal fluids. The electrical structure in the upper 1–2 km does not correlate with lithology but with alteration mineralogy. At the location of the IDDP-1 well, which encountered magma at 2.1 km depth, the resistivity image shows high resistivity, most likely due to the epidote–chlorite geology and the presence of deeper superheated or supercritical fluids. Two km northwest of the well, however, an intrusive low-resistivity feature is imaged rising from depth, and a plausible interpretation is that of a magma intrusion. One possible explanation for the magma encounter at the IDDP-1 well is the existence of pathways or fissures connected to the magma chamber and intersected by the well. The MT response to these magma pathways is not discernible in the existing data, perhaps because this magma volume is below the threshold of resolvability. The electrical resistivity structure of the Hengill geothermal area also reveals characteristic features of a high temperature geothermal system with two low-resistivity layers. The nature of the uppermost low-resistivity layer and the increasing resistivity below it is attributed to hydrothermal mineral alteration, while the nature of the deep low-resistivity layer, centered over the northeast, is not yet well understood. The geothermal system in the northeast area appears to be shallower than the system manifested in the southwest. 3D MT inversions of Krafla and Hengill data sets show that knowledge of the subsurface electrical resistivity contributes substantially to a better understanding of complex geothermal systems.

A new seismic recording approach, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), transforms telecommunication fiber-optic cables into sensor arrays enabling meter-scale recording over tens of kilometers of linear fiber length. We analyze cataloged earthquake observations from three DAS arrays with different horizontal geometries to demonstrate some possibilities using this technology. In Fairbanks, Alaska, we find that stacking ground motion records along 20nm of fiber yield a waveform that shows a high degree of correlation in amplitude and phase with a colocated inertial seismometer record at 0.8–1.6nHz. Using an L-shaped DAS array in Northern California, we record the nearly vertically incident arrival of an earthquake from The Geysers Geothermal Field and estimate its backazimuth and slowness via beamforming for different phases of the seismic wavefield. Lastly, we install a fiber in existing telecommunications conduits below Stanford University and show that little cable-to-soil coupling is required for teleseismic P and S phase arrival detection.

Summary We present results from an intermediate scale field experiment conducted in December 2014, evaluating the use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for recording ambient noise generated by infrastructure use; the future aim of our effort is to utilize ambient noise for real-time geotechnical evaluation of soils beneath active infrastructure. We present details of the installation, recording comparisons of 4 selected DAS cables, and a noise comparison between DAS and classical 3C geophones. We conclude by showing preliminary examples of ambient noise interferometry using passive data acquired with DAS vs. 3C geophones.

San Marcos Pueblo, archaeological site LA 98, was occupied in the 13th century and abandoned after 1680. This was a large community that conducted extensive trade based on local mineral resources. The Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE) Field Course has conducted investigations pointing to unique groundwater access as a motivating factor in the pueblo settlement. The Quaternary stratigraphy of the site has been reveled by near-surface seismic refraction profiling. The specific hydrogeologic conditions leading to the reliability of San Marcos Spring are the presence of the Ancha formation, its basal juxtaposition on the Galisteo formation and the erosion of overlying Holocence terrace deposits.
