The world is populated by archangels and wild gods, the roar of military aircraft, hunting dogs caught permanently suspended in the chase and a car that veers from the road into the floodwater in which the whole collection is saturated. Human relations are fleeting and vulnerable, appearing in the impression of a wedding or the recurring moments captured between a father and son, who make between them delicate balsawood constructions, which - as the poems do themselves - take flight in the turmoil, ecstatic one moment, plunged into darkness the next. This is a visionary collection that invokes other times, dimensions and soundscapes to tell out some word of beauty and abundance in the here and now.

This collection of poems reflects on the local wildlife I have had the pleasure of interacting with over the last fifteen years. I live in a small far northern Nsw Australian coastal village, where my home backs onto an estuarine creek and fronts onto the Pacific Ocean with just a strip of bushland separating them. I go to sleep to the sound of the ocean and wake to the sounds of the creatures that feature in my poems. I do not claim to be an expert on wildlife, and my poems are based on my observations over time and the subjects traits with which I have become most familiar. All the places I mention are real and are within a ten-minute walk except for Mt. Warning and the Tweed River, which are within a twenty-minute drive. Any of the facts I provide have been carefully researched or provided to me by a highly respected local marine biologist, whose love of nature far exceeds my own. I think adults will find them informative and children educational. He has also generously assisted me with many of my illustrations, and I am extremely grateful for this and his well-informed input. It is hoped my poems may be enjoyed by people of all ages and have included a little touch of humour in some that I think might appeal to the younger generation in particular.

Starting with the viral poem “Crossing Half of China to Fuck You,” Yu Xiuhua's raw collection in Fiona Sze-Lorrain's translation chronicles her life as a disabled, divorced, single mother in rural China.Yu Xiuhua was born with cerebral palsy in Hengdian village in the Hubei Province, in central China. Unable to attend college, travel, or work the land with her parents, Yu remained home where she could help with housework. Eventually she was forced into an arranged marriage that became abusive. Ellen Louise Chandler Moulton was born on 10th April 1835 in Pomfret, Connecticut.At her peak she was one of America's most popular children's authors but her works also included many stories and novels for adults, volumes on travels, the editing and prefacing of biographies and, of course, her poetry.She published her first work, some verses, in a local newspaper when she was 15. Three years later, a Boston company published her ‘This, That, and the Other,'a collection of stories and poems which had previously in magazines and periodicals. After publication Moulton went for a year to Emma Willard's Troy Female Seminary and left in 1855. Six weeks after leaving, on August 27th, 1855, she married the Boston publisher, William Upham Moulton. He was instrumental in developing her literary career although the Civil War would interrupt her work until the early 1870s.Her poems and stories were also much requested by the leading magazines of the day including Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic, The Galaxy and Scribner's.As the Boston correspondent for the New York Tribune she wrote regular detailed critiques from 1870 to 1876.In the winter of 1876, her first volume of ‘Poems'(renamed ‘Swallow Flights'in England), was published and highly praised by the critics. It was not until she was 41 that she first travelled to London and on to Europe. Thereafter she more often than not spent summers abroad and winters in Boston. She made friends easily with the literary giants of her day and in turn her work was admired by them.For the Boston Herald Sunday issue she wrote a weekly literary letter from 1886 to 1892.Ellen Louise Chandler died after a lengthy illness on 10th August 1908 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was 78.

Flora Jane Timms was born on December 5th, 1876 in Juniper Hill in northeast Oxfordshire, the eldest of twelve children to Albert Timms, a stonemason, and Emma, a nursemaid. Only she and five siblings survived.Flora was educated at the parish school in the village of Cottisford and described as'altogether her father's child'.When she was 14, In 1891, Flora moved to start work as a counter clerk at the post office in Fringford, a village about 4 miles northeast of Bicester. It was to be the first in a series of jobs at various other post offices, including those at Grayshott, Yateley, and later Bournemouth.By 1896 Flora was a regular contributor to The Catholic Fireside on her thoughts and activities in the Countryside and many of her works from here were published as The Peverel Papers.In 1903 she married John William Thompson, a post office clerk and telegraphist from the Isle of Wight, at Twickenham Parish Church. After the marriage they moved to Bournemouth to settle down and build a life together. A daughter, Winifred Grace, was born in 1903, followed by two sons, Henry Basil, in 1909 and Peter Redmond in 1918.Flora was a self-taught writer but had taken some time to establish her career. Her early married life may have also required setting writing aside for some time but in 1911 she won a competition in The Ladies Companion for a 300-word essay on Jane Austen.In 1921 she published her only book of poetry, Bog-Myrtle and Peat, and, by the following year, 1922, she was thinking of writing about her childhood in what would later become her defining works.Meanwhile she continued to write extensively, publishing short stories together with magazine and newspaper articles.In 1925 she published a travel guide to Liphook, Bramshott and Neighbourhood.Flora also had a great interest and knowledge, again self-taught, as a naturalist. Many of her works on the subject were published and later anthologised.In 1938 Flora at last sent several essays on her country childhood to Oxford University Press. The publisher accepted them, and they were published in three separate volumes, Lark Rise (1939), Over to Candleford (1941), and Candleford Green (1943). In 1945 the books were republished as a trilogy under the title Lark Rise to Candleford. Together the books are a lightly disguised story of the author's own youth, describing life in a hamlet, a village, and a country town in the 1880s.The death of her younger son during the Second World War affected her deeply and overshadowed her final years.Flora Thompson died on 21st May 1947, at age 70, of a heart attack in Brixham, and is buried at Longcross Cemetery, Dartmouth in Devon.Two of Thompson's later lesser-known works were published posthumously: Heatherley, recounting her time in the post office at Grayshott at the turn of the 20th century as her lifelong interests took shape, the longing for education and culture and the desire to become a writer; and her last completed book Still Glides the Stream.

In 2013, Leanne O'Sullivan's husband Andrew suffered a severe infection in his brain. He spent just over three weeks in a coma, during which time his temperature soared to 42 degrees.
