The potential of airfoil optimisation for the specific requirements of airborne wind energy (AWE) systems is investigated. Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted at high Reynolds numbers for the S1223 airfoil and an optimised airfoil with thin slat. The optimised geometry was generated using the NSGA-II optimisation algorithm in conjunction with 2D-RANS simulations. The results showed that simultaneous optimisation of the slat and airfoil is the most promising approach. Furthermore, the choice of turbulence model was found to be crucial, requiring appropriate transition modeling to reproduce experimental data. The k-ω-SST-γ-Reθ model proved to be most suitable for the geometries investigated. Wind tunnel experiments were conducted with high aspect ratio model airfoils, using a novel structural design, relying mostly on 3D-printed airfoil segments. The optimised airfoil and slat geometry showed significantly improved maximum lift and a shift of the maximum power factor to higher angles of attack, indicating good potential for use in AWE systems, especially at higher Reynolds numbers. The combined numerical and experimental approach proved to be very successful and the overall process a promising starting point for future optimisation and investigation of airfoils for AWE systems.

This study describes the impact of postprocessing methods on the calculated parameters of tip vortices of a wind turbine model when tested using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Several vortex identification methods and differentiation schemes are compared. The chosen methods are based on two components of the velocity field and its derivatives. They are applied to each instantaneous velocity field from the dataset and also to the calculated average velocity field. The methodologies are compared through the vortex center location, vortex core radius and jittering zone. Results show that the tip vortex center locations and radius have good comparability and can vary only a few grid spacings between methods. Conversely, the convection velocity and the jittering surface, defined as the area where the instantaneous vortex centers are located, vary between identification methods. Overall, the examined parameters depend significantly on the post-processing method and selected vortex identification criteria. Therefore, this study proves that the selection of the most suitable postprocessing methods of PIV data is pivotal to ensure robust results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study pressure measurement correlations, as the location of the pressure sensors should enable to capture variation of the drag force depending on the yaw angle and some geometrical modifications. Design/methodology/approach The present aerodynamical study, performed on a reduced scale mock-up representing a sport utility vehicle, involves both numerical and experimental investigations. Experiments performed in a wind tunnel facility deal with drag and pressure measurements related to the side wind variation. The pressure sensor locations are deduced from wall streamlines computed from large eddy simulation results on the external surfaces of the mock-up. Findings After validation of the drag coefficient (Cd) values computed with an aerodynamic balance, measurements should only imply pressure tap mounted on the vehicle to perform real driving emission (RDE) tests. Originality/value Relation presented in this paper between pressure coefficients measured on a side sensor and the drag coefficient data must enable to better quantify the drag force contribution of a ground vehicle in RDE tests.

While modern wind turbines have become by far the largest rotating machines on Earth with further upscaling planned for the future, a renewed interest in small wind turbines is fostering energy transition and smart grid development. Small machines have traditionally not received the same level of aerodynamic refinement of their larger counterparts, resulting in lower efficiency, lower capacity factors, and therefore a higher cost of energy. In an effort to reduce this gap, research programmes are developing worldwide. With this background, the scope of the present study is twofold. In the first part of this paper, an overview of the current status of the technology is presented in terms of technical maturity, diffusion, and cost. The second part of the study proposes five grand challenges that are thought to be key to fostering the development of small wind turbine technology in the near future, i.e.: (1) improve energy conversion of modern SWTs through better design and control, especially in the case of turbulent wind; (2) better predict long-term turbine performance with limited resource measurements and prove reliability; (3) improve the economic viability of small wind energy; (4) facilitate the contribution of SWTs to the energy demand and electrical system integration; (5) foster engagement, social acceptance, and deployment for global distributed wind markets. To tackle these challenges, a series of unknowns and gaps are first identified and discussed. Based on them, improvement areas are suggested within which ten key enabling actions are finally proposed.

A towing tank is utilized to investigate the flow field around a two-dimensional submerged foil model operating near the free surface. Free surface effects are analyzed for steady and unsteady model velocity. The model’s submergence depth and angle of attack are varied. Tests are conducted for the model facing upside-up and upside-down. The surface deflection is recorded and the experimental results are utilized to validate an analytic model that is deployed to predict wake wave patterns at arbitrary model velocity. The flow mechanism leading to load alterations when the foil is in the vicinity of the free surface is explored in detail using experimental and analytic results. The imposed wave-induced velocity perturbations alter the effective angle of attack experienced by the foil. Flow separation is delayed when the model is facing upside-up and promoted when facing upside-down. For test cases with unsteady sinusoidal model velocity, forward traveling waves are generated, leading to a time-varying change in the inflow condition of the submerged foil. Increasing the model’s submergence depth alleviates free surface effects. A skim plate is installed in-between the free surface and model. It shows similar wave alleviating effects as obtained when increasing the model submergence depth by locally blocking wave-induced velocities. The skim plate position is varied in the longitudinal direction to determine its most advantageous position. Surface wave effects at unsteady model velocity are alleviated most effectively when the skim plate protrudes upstream of the model. Graphical abstract

This wind tunnel study investigates the aerodynamic effects of Mini Gurney flaps (MGFs) and their combination with vortex generators (VGs) on the performance of airfoils and wind turbine rotor blades. VGs are installed on the suction side aiming at stall delay and increased maximum lift. MGFs are thin angle profiles that are attached at the trailing edge in order to increase lift at pre-stall operation. The implementation of both these passive flow control devices is accompanied by a certain drag penalty. The wind tunnel tests are conducted at the Hermann- Föttinger Institut of the Technische Universität Berlin. Lift is determined with a force balance and drag with a wake rake for static angles of attack from −5° to 17° at a constant Reynolds number of 1.5 million. The impact of different MGF heights including 0.25 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 % and an uniform VG height of 1.1 % of the chord length are tested on three airfoils that are characteristic for different sections of large rotor blades. Furthermore, the clean and the tripped baseline cases are considered. In the latter, leading edge transition is forced by means of Zig Zag (ZZ) turbulator tape. The preferred configurations are the smallest MGF on the NACA63(3)618 and the AH93W174 (mid to tip blade region) and the medium sized MGF combined with VGs on the DU97W300 (root to mid region). Next, the experimental lift and drag polar data is imported into the software QBlade in order to design a generic rotor blade. The blade performance is simulated with and without the add-ons based on two case studies. In the first case, the retrofit application on an existing blade mitigates the adverse effects of the ZZ tape. Stall is delayed and the aerodynamic efficiency is partly recovered leading to an improvement of the power curve. In the second case, the new design application allows for the design of a more slender blade while maintaining the power output. Moreover, the alternative blade appears to be more resistant against forced leading edge transition.

Bioinspired morphing wings are part of a novel research direction offering greatly increased adaptability for use in unmanned aerial vehicles. Recent models published in the literature often rely on simplifications of the bird wing apparatus and fail to preserve many of the macroscopic morphological features. Therefore, a more holistic design approach could uncover further benefits of truly bioinspired bird wing models. With this issue in mind, a prototype inspired by crow wings (Corvus genus) is developed, which is capable of planform wing morphing. The prototype imitates the feather structure of real birds and replicates the folding motion with a carbon fiber reinforced polymer skeleton with one controllable degree of freedom. The mechanism supplies a smooth airfoil lifting surface through a continuous morphing motion between a fully extended and a folded state. When extended, it has an elliptic planform and emarginated slots between primary remiges. In the folded state, the wingspan is reduced by 50% with a 40% reduction in surface area and the aspect ratio decreases from 2.9 to 1.2. Experimental data from a subsonic wind tunnel investigation is presented for flow velocities ranging from 5 to 20 m s−1, corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 0.7 × 105–2.8 × 105. The wing is analyzed in the three static states (folded, intermediate, and extended) through aerodynamic coefficients and flow visualizations along the surface. The bioinspired design enables the wing to capture several phenomena found on real bird wings. Through its morphing capabilities and intrinsic softness, the wing can sustain large angles of attack with greatly delayed stall and maintain optimal performance at different velocities.

Challenges for steady and unsteady model motion in a large water towing tank and procedures to overcome them are the focus of the presented work. Some challenges are attributed to experiments conducted in water, whereas others are uniquely ascribed to a towing tank facility. Data convergence and outlier detection are studied based on the phase averaged pressure in order to ensure proper data quality. Pressure measurements are performed with non-surface mounted sensors. Therefore, inertia effects are detrimental when the attached tubing is not fully de-aired. A procedure for de-airing the pressure sensor cavity and its tubing is described. An iterative approach is developed that compensates for nonlinear distortion of the model’s velocity profile. Further, vibration effects are examined by distinguishing mechanical and flow-induced frequencies that scale with the instantaneous model velocity. Sloshing waves are excited, which are a function of the water basin size. The first sloshing mode defines the required sensor offset time in between test cases when prevailing sloshing waves have not fully decayed. This appropriate selection of sensor offset time reduces data scatter and enables a reasonable waiting time in between test cases. A skim plate installed just below the water surface offers a potential solution to alleviate surface wave effects over the model.

Accurate and reproducible aeroelastic load calculations are indispensable for designing modern multi-MW wind turbines. They are also essential for assessing the load reduction capabilities of advanced wind turbine control strategies. In this paper, we contribute to this topic by introducing the TUB Controller, an advanced open-source wind turbine controller capable of performing full load calculations. It is compatible with the aeroelastic software QBlade, which features a lifting line free vortex wake aerodynamic model. The paper describes in detail the controller and includes a validation study against an established open-source controller from the literature. Both controllers show comparable performance with our chosen metrics. Furthermore, we analyze the advanced load reduction capabilities of the individual pitch control strategy included in the TUB Controller. Turbulent wind simulations with the DTU 10 MW Reference Wind Turbine featuring the individual pitch control strategy show a decrease in the out-of-plane and torsional blade root bending moment fatigue loads of 14% and 9.4% respectively compared to a baseline controller.

The use of power augmentation devices in wind energy applications has been receiving increasing interest from both the scientific and the industrial community. In particular, Gurney Flaps (GFs) showed a great potential thanks to the passive functioning, the simple construction and the possibility to add them as a retrofit to existing rotors. The possibility of having a high quality set of airfoil data for a wide range of both angle of attack (AoA) and Reynolds number is pivotal in the design phase of newly developed machines. Such data are usually available in the technical literature for smooth airfoils, while there is a lack of generalized results in case of airfoils with GFs. Within this context, the authors have performed an extended investigation on the lift increase capabilities of GFs for the well-known NACA 0021 airfoil, which has been used in several wind energy applications up to now. The present paper shows the results of a combined experimental and numerical analysis considering different geometrical configurations of the flaps under both static and dynamic conditions. Experimental data were first obtained for the AoA range of 180 degrees at a low value of Reynolds number (i.e. Re = 180 k) to analyze the impact of three different geometrical configurations of the GF on the aerodynamic behavior for the full range of incidence angles. The geometrical configurations were defined by varying the length of the flap (i.e. 1.4% and 2.5% of the chord length) and its inclination angle with respect to the blade chord (i.e. 90 degrees and 45 degrees). The experimental investigation involved also dynamic sinusoidal pitching movements at multiple reduced frequencies to evaluate the stall hysteresis cycle. Subsequently, an unsteady CFD numerical model was first calibrated against wind tunnel data at low values of the Reynolds number. Then, the virtual model was exploited to extend the investigation to a wider range of Reynolds number for dynamic AoA rates of change typical for example of vertical-axis wind turbines, i.e. characterized by higher reduced frequencies with a non-sinusoidal motion law.

This paper investigates the aerodynamic impact of Gurney flaps on a research wind turbine of the Hermann-Föttinger Institute at the Technische Universität Berlin. The rotor radius is 1.5 meters and the blade configurations consist of the clean and the tripped baseline cases emulating the effects of forced leading edge transition. The wind tunnel experiments include three operation points based on tip speed ratios of 3.0, 4.3 and 5.6, reaching Reynold numbers of approximately 250,000. The measurements are taken by means of three different methods; Ultrasonic Anemometry in the wake, surface pressure taps in the mid-span blade region and strain gauges at the blade root. The retrofit application consists of two Gurney flap heights of 0.5 % and 1.0 % in relation to the chord length, which are implemented perpendicular to the pressure side at the trailing edge. As a result, the Gurney flap configurations evoke performance improvements in terms of the axial wake velocities, the angles-of-attack and the lift coefficients. The enhancement of the root bending moments imply an increase of both the rotor torque and the thrust. Furthermore, the aerodynamic impact appears to be more pronounced in the tripped case compared to the clean case. Gurney flaps are considered a worthwhile passive flow-control device in order to alleviate the adverse effects of early separation and leading edge erosion of horizontal axis wind turbines.

The current paper discusses the effect of fixing transition on a three-bladed upwind horizontal axis wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 3 m located in a wind tunnel with a cross-section of 4.2 m x 4.2 m. The turbine is analysed at rated condition and below the rated operating point.The transition is fixed on the blades by means of a zigzag tape trip strip. A comparison between the fixed transition and a clean case, without any trip strip, is made in terms of the angle of attack, relative velocity, and local forces and moments. Additionally, the zigzag tape application method is studied. The results are obtained from surface pressure taps and one 3-hole probe located at 45% and 85% of the blade span, respectively.The inclusion of the zigzag tape shows slight variations on the relative velocity, up to 1%. The angle of attack has an average increment of 0.5° when the transition is forced. The local forces and pitch moment can vary up to 23%, depending on the implementation and the operational condition.

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on the aerodynamic drag of roof-mounted insulators for use on low- and high-speed trains. Wind tunnel investigations at different Reynolds numbers in the subcritical, critical, and supercritical flow regime were performed, in addition to investigations using wall-mounted cylinders. Furthermore, the impact of insulator sheds made of flexible material was analyzed. For a better understanding of the aerodynamic behavior of the insulators when mounted on trains, different boundary conditions representing realistic configurations as found on the roof of trains were simulated. From the measured drag, the energy demand to overcome the aerodynamic resistance of different types of insulators was calculated. Depending on the above mentioned boundary conditions, a noticeable contribution of the insulators to the entire train's aerodynamic drag could be observed. With flexible insulator sheds, a further increased air resistance was observed with the onset of fluttering. Similar to the cylinder, the aerodynamic behavior of the insulators depends on the respective Reynolds number.

This experimental study investigates the fundamental flow field of a spatially oscillating jet emitted by a fluidic oscillator into an attached cross-flow. Dominant flow structures, such as the jet trajectory and dynamics of streamwise vortices, are discussed in detail with the aim of understanding the interaction between the spatially oscillating jet and the cross-flow. The oscillating jet is ejected perpendicular to the cross-flow. A moveable stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system is employed for the plane-by-plane acquisition of the flow field. The three-dimensional, time-resolved flow field is obtained by phase averaging the PIV results based on a pressure signal from inside the fluidic oscillator. The influence of velocity ratio and Strouhal number is assessed. Compared to a common steady wall-normal jet, the spatially oscillating jet penetrates to a lesser extent into the cross-flow’s wall-normal direction in favour of a considerable spanwise penetration. The flow field is dominated by streamwise-oriented vortices, which are convected downstream at the speed of the cross-flow. The vortex dynamics exhibits a strong dependence on the Strouhal number. For small Strouhal numbers, the spatially oscillating jet acts similar to a vortex-generating jet with a time-dependent deflection angle. Accordingly, it forms time-dependent streamwise vortices. For higher Strouhal numbers, the cross-flow is not able to follow the motion of the jet, which results in a quasi-steady wake that forms downstream of the jet. The results suggest that the flow field approaches a quasi-steady behaviour when further increasing the Strouhal number.

In this paper, a method to determine the angle of attack on a wind turbine rotor blade using a chordwise pressure distribution measurement was applied. The approach used a reduced number of pressure tap data located close to the blade leading edge. The results were compared with the measurements from three external probes mounted on the blade at different radial positions and with analytical calculations. Both experimental approaches used in this study are based on the 2-D flow assumption; the pressure tap method is an application of the thin airfoil theory, while the probe method applies geometrical and induction corrections to the measurement data. The experiments were conducted in the wind tunnel at the Hermann Föttinger Institut of the Technische Universität Berlin. The research turbine is a three-bladed upwind horizontal axis wind turbine model with a rotor diameter of 3 m. The measurements were carried out at rated conditions with a tip speed ratio of 4.35, and different yaw and pitch angles were tested in order to compare the approaches over a wide range of conditions. Results show that the pressure tap method is suitable and provides a similar angle of attack to the external probe measurements as well as the analytical calculations. This is a significant step for the experimental determination of the local angle of attack, as it eliminates the need for external probes, which affect the flow over the blade and require additional calibration.

This experimental study investigates the flow field and properties of a sweeping jet emitted from a fluidic oscillator into a quiescent environment. The aspect ratio of the outlet throat is 1. Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry is employed to measure the velocity field plane-by-plane. Simultaneously acquired pressure measurements provide a reference for phase correlating the individual planes yielding three-dimensional, time-resolved velocity information. Lagrangian and Eulerian visualization techniques illustrate the phase-averaged flow field. Circular head vortices, similar to the starting vortex of a steady jet, are formed repetitively when the jet is at its maximum deflection. The quantitative jet properties are determined from instantaneous velocity data using a cylindrical coordinate system that takes into account the changing deflection angle of the jet. The jet properties vary throughout the oscillation cycle. The maximum jet velocity decays much faster than that of a comparable steady jet indicating a higher momentum transfer to the environment. The entrainment rate of the spatially oscillating jet is larger than for a steady jet by a factor of 4. Most of the mass flow is entrained from the direction normal to the oscillation plane, which is accompanied by a significant increase in jet depth compared to a steady jet. The high entrainment rate results from the enlarged contact area between jet and ambient fluid due to the spatial oscillation. The jet’s total force exceeds that of an idealized steady jet by up to 30 %. The results are independent of the investigated oscillation frequencies in the range from 5 to 20 Hz.

Thanks to the renewed interest in vertical-axis wind turbines, research efforts are devoted at improving the accuracy of present simulation tools, many of which are underdeveloped if compared to those for horizontal-axis turbines. In particular, recent studies demonstrated that a correction for the “virtual camber” effect has a major impact on the simulation. In cycloidal motion indeed the blade aerodynamics are equivalent to those of a virtually-transformed airfoil with a camber line defined by its arc of rotation. In this study, the implementation of a specific module to account for the virtual camber effect in the Open-Source code QBlade is presented. The effectiveness of the model is then validated by four 1-blade and a full 3-blade H-Darrieus turbines, for which both experimental measurements and detailed CFD calculations were available. A sensitivity analysis on the impact of the virtual camber correction on the accuracy of a low-order simulation model has been carried out as a function of the chord-to-radius ratio and the airfoil thickness-to-chord ratio. Reference thresholds for the model applicability are presented for both variables.

In order to assess the accuracy of drag prediction methods for high-speed trains, experimental and numerical investigations were performed. Besides the drag coefficient, skin friction and pressure distributions on and near the model have been measured for a 1:22 model of the ICE/V. For the experiments, a moving model rig called DIWA (Drag measurement in water) was realised in a 120 m long towing tank to allow for a realistic simulation of the flow around the train, even in the underbelly region. Numerical investigations were performed using Partially-averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) simulations based on the k-ω-SST turbulence model. Both experimental and numerical methods can be considered as a novelty in the field of train aerodynamics. The results are compared with data from full-scale tests. It is shown, that the moving model rig DIWA allows for the measurement of drag coefficients of trains with high accuracy. Furthermore, the data acquired using the PANS approach compares well with the experimental data.

Purpose This paper aims to present an experimental investigation of an active flow control solution mounted at rear of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with the objective of drag reduction, thanks to a selection of flow control parameters leading to a pressure increase on the tailgate. Design/methodology/approach A flow control design of experiments was conducted with a pulsed jet system mounted on the top and sides of the rear window of the vehicle. The wall pressure, instantaneous velocity and drag were measured with this prototype in a wind tunnel. A dynamic modal decomposition (DMD) analysis of the pressure enables to describe the pressure fluctuations. Fluid dynamic computations show relation between pressure and velocity fields. Findings Measurements with this prototype in the wind tunnel revealed small improvements in drag for the best flow control configurations. This small benefit is because of the core of the upper span wise vortex further away from the rear window than the lower span wise vortex. These small improvements in drag were confirmed with pressure measurements on the rear window and tailgate. The DMD analysis of the surface pressure showed a low frequency pendulum oscillation on the lower area of the tailgate, linked with low velocity frequencies in the shear layers near the tailgate. Originality/value Experimental and numerical results show interest to increase pressure at bottom of the rear end of this SUV prototype. The dynamic description of the wall pressure shows importance of flow control solutions reducing pressure fluctuations at low frequencies in the lower area of the tailgate.

The flow around and downstream of the front wheels of passenger cars is highly complex and characterized by flow structure interactions between the external flow, fluid exiting through the wheelhouse, flow from the engine bay and the underbody. In the present paper the near wall flow downstream of the front wheel house is analyzed, combining two traditional methods. A tuft visualization method is used to obtain the limiting streamline pattern and information about the near wall flow direction. Additionally, time resolved surface pressure measurements are used to study the pressure distribution and the standard deviation. The propagation of the occurring flow structures is investigated by cross correlations of the pressure signal and a spectral analysis provides the characteristic frequencies of the investigated flow. It is found that two main flow phenomena can be observed: one originates from flow exiting the upper wheelhouse and a second one resulting from a separation on the lower wheel house edge. The frequency spectrum reveals a dominant Strouhal number of 0.2. As the observed flow structures are attributed to the wheel-wheelhouse interaction, a closed wheelhouse configuration is also investigated and the results confirm that the fluctuations and observed flow structures are created by the flow interaction between the wheel, wheelhouse and the rotation of the wheel.

Wind industry needs high quality airfoil data for a range of the angle of attack (AoA) much wider than that often provided by the technical literature, which often lacks data i.e. in deep- and post-stall region. Especially in case of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), the blades operate at very large AoAs, which exceed the range of typical aviation application. In a previous study, some of the authors analyzed the trend of the lift coefficient of a NACA 0021 airfoil, using the suggestions provided by detailed CFD analyses to correct experimental data at low Reynolds numbers collected in an open-jet tunnel. In the present study, the correction method is extended in order to analyze even the drag and moment coefficients over a wide range of AoAs for two different Reynolds numbers (Re = 140k and Re = 180k) of particular interest for small wind turbines. The utility of these data is again specifically high in case of VAWTs, in which both the drag and the moment coefficient largely contribute to the torque. The investigation involves tunnel data regarding both static polars and dynamic sinusoidal pitching movements at multiple reduced frequencies. Concerning the numerical simulations, two different computational domains were considered, i.e. the full wind tunnel and the open field. Once experimental data have been purged by the influence of the wind tunnel by means of the proposed correction method, they were compared to existing data for similar Reynolds both for the NACA0021 and for similar airfoils. By doing so, some differences in the static stall angle and the extent of the hysteresis cycle are discussed. Overall, the present paper provides the scientific community with detailed analysis of low-Reynolds NACA 0021 data in multiple variations, which may enable, inter alia, a more effective VAWT design in the near future.

The present study assesses the applicability of towing tank experiments using a moving model for the investigation of the aerodynamics of long land-borne heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks, and trains. Based on experiments with a 1:22 scaled model of a high-speed train, the influence of various conditions relevant for the transferability of the results obtained in water to air is analysed exemplarily. These conditions include surface waves, cavitation and submergence depth. The experiments were carried out in the shallow water towing tank of the Technische Universität Berlin. It is shown that outside a critical Froude number range of about 0.2

The present study examines the possibilities of transferring drag measurement results on reduced-scale train models to the respective full-scale vehicle. A comprehensive experimental and numerical study of the boundary layer and skin friction along trains is performed, focusing on Reynolds number effects. The data are supplemented by an extensive literature study and compared with different approaches from flat plate theory. Good agreement can be found when using the appropriate empiric coefficients and boundary conditions. Simultaneously, the difficulties in determining the skin friction drag of trains due to three-dimensional effects and surface roughness become apparent. The ground simulation analysis, including the effects of ground roughness due to ballast and sleepers, reveals a significant effect of the ground conditions on the vehicle’s aerodynamic drag. Additionally, the effects of elements mounted on the train roof are investigated for different upstream flow conditions. Finally, a scaling method is proposed to transfer drag results from model-scale to full-scale trains based on the findings.

An aerodynamic load control concept termed “adaptive blowing” was successfully tested on a NACA 0018 airfoil model at Reynolds numbers ranging from 1.5·10 5 to 5·10 5 . The global objective was to eliminate lift oscillations typically encountered on wind turbine blade sections. Depending on the jet momentum flux, steady blowing from a control slot in the leading-edge region can be utilized to either enhance or reduce lift by suppressing or inducing boundary layer separation respectively. Furthermore, high momentum blowing effectively eliminated the dynamic stall vortex during deep dynamic stall conditions. Based on these previous findings, the present work explores the feasibility of controlling unsteady aerodynamic loads by dynamically varying the jet momentum flux to compensate for transient changes of the inflow. Various scenarios including high amplitude pitching, rapid freestream oscillations and combinations of both were investigated in a custom-built unsteady wind tunnel facility. An iterative control algorithm was implemented which successfully identified the momentum coefficient time profiles required to minimize the lift excursions. The combination of fully suppressing dynamic stall and dynamically adjusting the lift coefficient provided an unprecedented control authority, producing virtually constant phase averaged lift in all cases.

Wind Energy is substantially growing in recent years and is now one of the most competitive renewable energy sources on the market. To further foster the growth of this energy source, increasing effort is put into building accurate numerical models. Most models compute the loads acting on the turbine as a dependence of some sort to the angle of attack (AoA). Accurate AoA measurements would allow for comparison with experiments and would be of great benefit for the improvement of numerical models and the investigations of aerodynamic phenomena such as stall delay. However, the determination of the angle of attack during operation is troublesome to the present day. In addition to what was already mentioned, the AoA is key to evaluate loads acting on the wind turbine and assessing experiments, computational models, and aeroelastic models. This paper proposes a simple comparative method to estimate the AoA based on pressure distributions. The proposed method is tested using data from different numbers of pressure taps placed on the Berlin Research Turbine (BeRT) at the Hermann Föttinger Institut of the Technische Universität Berlin. The predicted results are in line with those from other methods while the operating conditions to which the model can be applied are improved.

The current paper describes the characteristics of the tip vortex in the near wake of a three-bladed upwind horizontal axis wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 3 m. Phase-locked stereo particle image velocimetry measurements were carried out under the influence of the wind tunnel walls that create a high blockage ratio. The location of the vortex, convection velocity, core radius, and strength were investigated and compared with similar investigations, including different blockages cases. Additionally, the same performance of the wind turbine model was simulated in the open source wind turbine tool QBlade, using the lifting line free vortex wake module in the absence of the walls. The results showed that the location of the tip vortices was more inboard the tip and more downstream the tunnel compared to the simulations and similar experiments. The convection velocity remained similar in the axial direction and changed in the lateral direction, contributing to the delay of the movement of the tip vortex outboard the tip. The strength, based on the circulation, was found with a difference of 4% between simulation and experiment.

The wind industry needs airfoil data for ranges of angle of attack (AoA) much wider than those of aviation applications, since large portions of the blades may operate in stalled conditions for a significant part of their lives. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are even more affected by this need, since data sets across the full incidence range of 180 deg are necessary for a correct performance prediction at different tip-speed ratios. However, the relevant technical literature lacks data in deep and poststall regions for nearly every airfoil. Within this context, the present study shows experimental and numerical results for the well-known NACA 0021 airfoil, which is often used for Darrieus VAWT design. Experimental data were obtained through dedicated wind tunnel measurements of a NACA 0021 airfoil with surface pressure taps, which provided further insight into the pressure coefficient distribution across a wide range of AoAs. The measurements were conducted at two different Reynolds numbers (Re = 140 k and Re = 180 k): each experiment was performed multiple times to ensure repeatability. Dynamic AoA changes were also investigated at multiple reduced frequencies. Moreover, dedicated unsteady numerical simulations were carried out on the same airfoil shape to reproduce both the static polars of the airfoil and some relevant dynamic AoA variation cycles tested in the experiments. The solved flow field was then exploited both to get further insight into the flow mechanisms highlighted by the wind tunnel tests and to provide correction factors to discard the influence of the experimental apparatus, making experiments representative of open-field behavior. The present study is then thought to provide the scientific community with high quality, low-Reynolds airfoil data, which may enable in the near future a more effective design of Darrieus VAWTs.

The wind industry needs reliable and accurate airfoil polars to properly predict wind turbine performance, especially during the initial design phase. Medium- and low-fidelity simulations directly depend on the accuracy of the airfoil data and even more so if e.g. dynamic effects are modeled. This becomes crucial if the blades of a turbine operate under stalled conditions for a significant part of the turbine’s lifetime. In addition, the design process of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) needs data across the full range of angles of attack between 0 and 180 deg. Lift, drag and surface pressure distributions of a NACA 0021 airfoil equipped with surface pressure taps were investigated based on time-resolved pressure measurements. The present study discusses full range static polars and several dynamic sinusoidal pitching configurations covering two Reynolds numbers Re = 140k and 180 k, and different incidence ranges: near stall, post stall and deep stall. Various bi-stable flow phenomena are discussed based on high frequency measurements revealing large lift-fluctuations in the post and deep stall regime that exceed the maximum lift of the static polars and are not captured by averaged measurements. Detailed surface pressure distributions are discussed to provide further insight into the flow conditions and pressure development during dynamic motion. The experimental data provided within the present paper is dedicated to the scientific community for calibration and reference purposes, which in the future may lead to higher accuracy in performance predictions during the design process of wind turbines.

The QBlade implementation of the lifting-line free vortex wake (LLFVW) method was tested in conditions analogous to floating platform motion. Comparisons against two independent test cases using a variety of simulation methods show good agreement in thrust forces, rotor power, blade forces and rotor plane induction. Along with the many verifications already undertaken in the literature, it seems that the code performs solidly even in these challenging cases. Further to this, the key steps are presented from a new formulation of the instantaneous aerodynamic thrust damping of a wind turbine rotor. A test case with harmonic platform motion and collective blade pitch is used to demonstrate how combining such tools can lead to a better understanding of aeroelastic stability. A second case demonstrates a non-harmonic blade pitch manoeuvre showing the versatility of the instantaneous damping method.

During the commissioning and stand-still cycles of wind turbines, the rotor is often stopped or even locked leaving the rotor blades at a standstill. When the blades are at a standstill, angles of attack on the blades can be very high, and it is therefore possible that they experience vortex-induced vibrations. This experiment and analysis helps to explain the different regimes of flow at very high angles of attack, particularly on moderately twisted and tapered blades. A single blade was tested at two different flow velocities at a range of angles of attack with flow tuft visualization and hotwire measurements of the wake. Hotwire wake measurements were able to show the gradual inception and ending of certain flow regimes. The power spectral densities of these measurements were normalized in terms of Strouhal number based on the projected chord to show that certain wake features have a relatively constant Strouhal number. The shedding frequency appears then to be relatively independent of chord taper and twist. Vortex generators (VGs) were tested but were found to have little influence in this case. Gurney flaps were found to modify the wake geometry, stall onset angles, and in some cases the shedding frequency.

The research on the external aerodynamics of ground vehicles can nowadays be related to sustainable development strategies, confirmed by the worldwide CO2 regulation target. Automotive manufacturers estimate that a drag reduction of 30% contributes to 10g/km of CO2 reduction. However, this drag reduction should be obtained without constraints on the design, the safety, comfort and habitability of the passengers. Thus, it is interesting to find flow control solutions, which will remove or remote recirculation zones due to separation edges with appropriate control techniques. In automotive sales, the SUV, 4x4 and compact cars represent a large part of the market share and the study of control approaches for this geometry is practically useful. In this work, appropriate control techniques are designed to decrease the drag forces around a reduced scale SUV car benchmark called POSUV. The control techniques are based on the DMD (Dynamic Mode Decomposition) algorithms generating an optimized drag reduction procedure. It involves independent transient inflow boundary conditions for flow control actuation in the vicinity of the separation zones and time resolved pressure sensor output signals on the rear end surface of the mockup. This study, that exploits dominant flow features behind the tailgate and the rear bumper, is performed using Large Eddy Simulations on a sufficient run time scale, in order to minimize a cost function dealing with the time and space average pressure coefficient. The resulting dynamic modal decomposition obtained by these LES simulations and by wind tunnel measurements has been compared for the reference case, in order to select the most appropriate run time scale. Analysis of the numerical results shows a significant pressure increase on the tailgate, for independent flow control frequencies. Similar decomposition performed in the wake with and without numerical flow control help understanding the flow modifications in the detachment zones.

Background: Ziziphus jujuba, which is known as “Annab” or “Onnab” in Iran, is an effective compound against some cancer cell lines. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-mutagenic and anticancer effects of the aqueous extract of Z. jujuba on C643 human thyroid carcinoma cells. Methods: C643 cells were cultured in (Roswell Park memorial institute) RPMI 1640 medium (Sigma) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), penicillin-streptomycin, and L-glutamine. After incubating the cultures at 37oC with 5% CO2, MTT assay was used to determine the inhibitory effect of Z. jujuba on cell proliferation. Cell cycle progression was monitored by sub-G1 apoptosis assay using flow cytometry. Finally, anti-mutagenicity properties of the extract were evaluated using a standard reverse mutation assay (Ames test), which was performed with a histidine auxotroph strain of Salmonella typhimurium (TA100) and exposure to a carcinogenic substance (sodium azide). Results: The aqueous extract of Z. jujuba inhibited the growth of C643 cells in a concentration range of 0.5 - 2 mg/mL and exhibited cytotoxic effects on C643 cells in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50: 1.671 mg/mL). The mechanism of action was the induction of apoptosis in the cells. The results of Ames test indicated a significant difference in the anti-mutagenic effects of Z. jujuba aqueous extract and controls (distilled water and sodium azide) (1.671 mg/mL) (P < 0.01). In addition, the herbal extract prevented reverted mutations and the hindrance percent was 87.97%. Conclusions: According to the results, the aqueous extract of Z. jujuba fruit exerted anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects on C643 thyroid carcinoma cell lines and may be potentially useful as an anticancer agent.
