The Levant Basin in the Eastern Mediterranean contains a ~3 km-thick, predominantly siliciclastic section of Oligocene-Miocene age, which hosts large hydrocarbon reservoirs (“Tamar Sands Play”). A fundamental question raised with respect to this siliciclastic section concerns its origin and the sedimentary pathways into the deep basin. Here we present an advanced provenance study, including detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf and heavy mineral assemblage investigations, of Oligocene-Miocene siliciclastic sediments retrieved from four boreholes across the Levant Basin. Our investigations reveal a preponderance of Neoproterozoic and older Precambrian zircons with mostly negative εHf values. This U-Pb-Hf pattern indicates that the studied sediments were mainly reworked from Paleozoic-Mesozoic sandstones of Afro-Arabia with variable derivation from the juvenile basement of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Comparison of the detrital signal in various stratigraphic levels of the Levant Basin shows that Early Oligocene and Early Miocene sand intervals are typified by a large proportion of pre-900 Ma zircons (ca. 50%), by a relatively small proportion of Neoproterozoic zircons with positive εHf values (ca. 25%), and by abundant detrital apatite peloids in the heavy mineral fraction. Resembling Miocene clastic sequences preserved in Israel, these characteristics are taken by us to indicate a dominant provenance in the Arabian side of the Red Sea Rift. On the other hand, Late Oligocene-lowest Early Miocene and Middle-Late Miocene intervals are typified by a mild proportion of pre-900 Ma zircon (ca. 35%) and by a larger proportion of Neoproterozoic zircons with positive εHf values (ca. 35%), they also contain scarce Mesozoic-Cenozoic zircons. These similarities to the Nile Delta sediments are taken by us to indicate a dominant provenance in NE Africa. Overall, our findings suggest that the Levant Basin was fed by varying proportions of sediments derived both from Arabia via the Levant continental margin and from NE Africa via the Nile Delta. While Early Oligocene and Early Miocene sediments, including the main section of the “Tamar Sands”, were chiefly derived from Arabian sources, Late Oligocene-lowest Early Miocene and Middle-Late Miocene sediments mainly sourced from NE Africa. The mere absence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic-aged detrital zircons, abundant in the Eurasian side of the Eastern Mediterranean, suggests that sand sourcing in the overriding plate of the Arabian-Eurasian collision belt did not reach the Levant Basin.

ASG, Azrqa Sirhan Graben; DST, Dead Sea Transform. , Abstract Isolated, Miocene continental basins scattered over Israel and Jordan represent the remnants of a continental‐wide fluvial system, which originated in Arabia and transported siliciclastic sediments westward to the deep Levant Basin. These basins define two geographically separated sedimentary provinces. The detrital zircon age spectra in both provinces are dominated by Neoproterozoic U‐Pb ages (550–1,000 Ma), resembling those of Paleozoic‐Mesozoic sandstones exposed along the uplifted Red Sea Rift flank. However, while the southern province exhibits two prominent peaks at ~600 and ~1,000 Ma, similar to those seen in Cambrian‐Ordovician sandstones in southern Israel and Jordan, the northern province shows an additional significant age peak at ~800 Ma and its overall spectrum resembles that of Devonian sandstones in northern Saudi Arabia. These variations distinguish the two Miocene clastic outliers as pertaining to two separate, NW‐directed transport systems delivering siliciclastic sediments from Arabia towards the deep Levant Basin. The detrital zircon U‐Pb‐Hf signal of the Israeli Miocene clastic units differs from that of the River Nile, particularly in the lack of Cenozoic‐Mesozoic‐aged zircons in the former. This allows us to distinguish the properties of the fluvial system that existed in Arabia, on the eastern side of the Red Sea, from that of the River Nile that drained its western flanks. While it is commonly accepted that the (proto‐)Nile River played a key role in the Levant Basin fill, the eastern fluvial system that prevailed on the Arabian side may have been also important.]

The northern extent of the supercontinent Gondwana in the late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian is not well defined. In most localities the continental margin is covered by thick sedimentary successions, formed following the successive rifting of Tethyan Oceans that episodically detached continental terranes from the edge of the supercontinent. East of the Mediterranean, despite the continental continuity between the Arabian-Nubian-Shield (ANS) and the Tauride block (a Cadomian terrane), the original transition between the two crustal domains is inaccessible and remains obscured. In Israel, investigations of Late Ediacaran, late-stage igneous intrusions of the ANS in the South, together with granulite xenoliths from the lower crust in the North, allow us to probe into the North-Gondwana edge in the late Neoproterozoic and envisage its transition towards the peri-Gondwana Cadomian realm, as well as the evolution of the North Gondwana crust subsequently to the Neoproterozoic. Geochronology and isotopic geochemistry of alkaline intrusions in the Amram massif (southern Israel) as well as doleritic intrusions in the late Neoproterozoic Zenifim Formation (subsurface of south-central Israel) has revealed an igneous and thermal imprint at ca. 550 Ma recorded by the reset of apatite U-Pb ages, together with additional apatite U-Pb dates taken to represent crystallization. Nd and Hf isotopes in apatite, zircon and whole rock also show the ca. 550 Ma intrusions are isotopically distinct from the ANS and resemble Cadomian magmatism in the Taurides. Granulite xenoliths from the lower crust under the lower Galilee (North Israel) contain abundant zircons of distinct U-Pb-Hf properties. These include detrital grains remnant of Neoproterozoic sediment that was subducted and relaminated to the lower crust, late Carboniferous zircons (peaking at 300 Ma) with contrasting εHf(t) signatures, some of which represent syn-Variscan magmatism, and zircons with the age of the host Pliocene basalt. We demonstrate that the Cadomian (ca. 550 Ma) igneous and thermal imprint on the North ANS may have been driven by proto-Tethys subduction that brought about sediment relamination to the North Gondwana lower crust in the latest Neoproterozoic. The late Carboniferous ages recorded in the xenoliths involve both the reworking of depleted ANS basement as well as the relaminated sediment in the means of metamorphism and minor magmatism. Carboniferous thermal disturbance was associated with the formation of continental scale basin and swell architecture across present-day N Africa, Arabia and Iran, and the development of ‘Hercynian unconformities’ in these areas, that were located at the time south of the passive(?) margin of Paleo-Tethys.

Situated between Africa and Eurasia in the eastern Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus has developed on the northern margin of the southern Neotethys by the accretion of three terrains, the Mamonia complex, the Troodos ophiolite, and the Kyrenia terrane. The Kyrenia terrane comprises a tectonic stack of Triassic to Eocene rock units interleaved with basic and acid volcanics and minor metamorphic inliers, alongside an Oligocene-Miocene flysch. Our U-Pb-Hf detrital zircon investigation in the Kyrenia Triassic to Eocene section reveals a large amount of Neoproterozoic zircons (950-600 Ma), alongside Silurian (∼430 Ma), Carboniferous (∼300 Ma), Triassic (∼240 Ma), and Upper Cretaceous (∼85 Ma) zircons. The Precambrian age profile of all three studied units resembles that of Paleozoic sandstones of the Tauride Block, as well as that of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sandstones found across North Africa. It is interpreted as reflecting the reworking of Paleozoic sandstone units from the Taurides or other peri-Gondwanan source. The presence of a substantial proportion of ~300 Ma zircons, as early as in Triassic sediments of the Kyrenia, is of significant interest because Carboniferous magmatism is confined to the Paleotethyan realm which is traced north of the Taurides. Deposition of the Kyrenia sequence closer to a Northern Tethyan province would better fit its detrital zircon signal. The detrital signal of the Kyrenia, indicative for Eurasian terranes north of the Mediterranean, also differs significantly from that of the Mamonia Complex (SW Cyprus) in which only Afro-Arabian sources are distinguished. Thus, in view of its unusual detrital zircon content, the Kyrenia sequence stands out in the Eastern Mediterranean as an exotic rock pile that cannot be straightforwardly correlated with its neighboring geologic environment.

The Kyrenia terrane of northern Cyprus comprises a tectonic stack of Triassic to Eocene rock units interleaved with basic and acid volcanics and minor metamorphic inliers, alongside an Oligocene-Miocene flysch. Our U-Pb-Hf detrital zircon investigation in the Kyrenia Triassic to Eocene section reveals Precambrian, Silurian (similar to 430 Ma), Carboniferous (similar to 300 Ma), Triassic (similar to 240 Ma), and Upper Cretaceous (similar to 85 Ma) zircons. The presence of 300 Ma zircons, as early as in Triassic sediments, is enigmatic because Carboniferous magmatism is confined to the Paleotethyan realm which is traced north of the Taurides. Deposition of the Kyrenia sequence closer to a Northern Tethyan province would better fit its detrital zircon signal. The detrital signal of the Kyrenia, indicative for derivation from areas north of the Mediterranean, also differs significantly from that of the Mamonia Complex (SW Cyprus) in which only Afro-Arabian sources are distinguished. Thus, in view of its unusual detrital zircon content, the Kyrenia sequence stands out in the Eastern Mediterranean as an exotic rock pile that cannot be straightforwardly correlated with its neighboring geologic environment. We defined the metamorphic inliers of Kyrenia as an ophiolitic melange and recognized blueschist-greenschist facies metamorphism to which we infer an Upper Cretaceous age. A U-Pb zircon age of 555 +/- 9 Ma (Cadomian) was obtained for the crystallization of a metabasic rock in the melange. These findings support the geodynamic linkage of the Kyrenia with the Alanya and Bitlis massifs that were also affected by Upper Cretaceous HP-LT metamorphism and accreted to the southern Tauride.

The Suez Rift is the northern extension of the Red Sea Rift and is an ideal location to study young continental breakup tectonics. Yet, despite much effort to constrain the timing of rift flank uplift and extensional exhumation in this region, the emerging picture remains uncertain. Here we present new thermochronologic constraints including apatite (U–Th)/He and fission track data from a transect across the eastern flank of the Suez Rift in SW Sinai. The use of two different thermochronometers in conjunction with thermal history modeling and well constrained kinetic parameters delineates a pronounced episode of relatively rapid cooling at 25-18 Ma followed by subdued post ∼18 Ma cooling. In contrast to previous estimates, this cooling pattern suggests that the most rapid uplift and exhumation phase along the Gulf of Suez took place during the early stage of rift formation, prior to the middle Miocene, with over 2.4 km of exhumation occurring during this stage. Uplift and exhumation along the Suez Rift flank slowed substantially post ∼18 Ma, as deformation migrated to the newly formed plate boundary along the Dead Sea Transform. This finding complements and strengthens previous indications for the initiation timing of the Dead Sea Transform plate boundary. The inferred late Oligocene–early Miocene timing of rapid exhumation, associated with tectonic extension and rift flank uplift coincides with the onset of regional alkali-basalt magmatism, suggesting lithospheric heating prior to the rift formation. This observation, along with the elevated topography around the Sinai triple junction and indications for some pre-rifting uplift, supports a more active mantle plume role in the rifting process.

The Cenozoic geodynamics of the north-eastern Mediterranean Basin have been dominated by the subduction of the African Plate under Eurasia. A trench-parallel crustal-scale thrust system (Misis-Kyrenia Thrust System) dissects the southern margin of the overriding plate and forms the structural grain and surface expression of northern Cyprus. Late Eocene to Miocene flysch of the Kythrea (Degirmenlik) Group is exposed throughout northern Cyprus, both at the hanging-wall and foot-wall of the thrust system, permitting access to an extensive Cenozoic sedimentary record of the basin. We report the results of a combined examination of detrital zircon and rutile U-Pb geochronology (572 concordant ages), coupled with Th/U ratios, Hf isotopic data and quantitative assessment of grain morphology of detrital zircon from four formations (5 samples) from the Kythrea flysch. These data provide a line of independent evidence for the existence of two different sediment transportation systems that discharged detritus into the basin between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Unique characteristics of each transport system are defined and a sediment unmixing calculation is demonstrated and explained. The first system transported almost exclusively North Gondwana-type, Precambrian-aged detrital zircon sourced from siliciclastic rock units in southern Anatolia. A different drainage system is revealed by the middle to late Miocene flysch sequence that is dominated by Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic-aged detrital zircon, whose age range is consistent with the magmatic episodicity of southeast Anatolia, along the Arabia-Eurasia suture zone. Deposition of these late Miocene strata took place thereupon closure of the Tethyan Seaway and African-Eurasian faunal exchange, and overlap in time with a pronounced uplift of eastern Anatolia. Our analytical data indicate the onset of prominent suture-parallel sediment transport from the collision zone of south-eastern Anatolia into the Kyrenia Range of northern Cyprus, marking the drainage response to the continental collision between Arabia and Eurasia.

U–Pb ages, trace element content and oxygen isotope ratios of single zircons from five plagiogranite intrusions of the Troodos ophiolite were measured to determine their crystallization age and assess the importance of fractional crystallization versus crustal anatexis in their petrogenesis. The results indicate that oceanic magmatism in Troodos took place at 94·3 ± 0·5 Ma, about 3 Myr earlier than previously recognized. Later hydrothermal alteration has affected most of the Troodos plagiogranitic rocks, resulting in growth of new zircon and/or partial alteration of zircon domains, causing slightly younger apparent crystallization ages. The new age inferred for seafloor spreading and ocean crust accretion in Troodos nearly overlaps that of the Semail ophiolite in Oman (95–96 Ma), strengthening previous indications for simultaneous evolution of both ophiolites in similar tectonic settings. Average δ18O(Zrn) values in the Troodos plagiogranites range between 4·2 and 4·8 ‰. The lower values in this range are lower than those expected in equilibrium with mantle-derived melt (5·3 ± 0·6 ‰), indicating variable contribution from hydrothermally altered, deep-seated oceanic crust in most of the Troodos plagiogranite intrusions. The inferred substantial involvement of crustal component is consistent with the existence of a shallow axial magma chamber, typical of fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge settings, within the Troodos slow-spreading ridge environment. This apparent contradiction may be reconciled by episodically intense magmatism within an otherwise slow, magmatically deprived spreading axis.

LA-ICPMS U-Pb geochronology of detrital rutile from North Gondwana Cambro-Ordovician sandstones is reported for the first time. Our sampling sites in Israel, Jordan and Ethiopia are situated thousands of kilometers apart thus providing a continental-scale perspective on the cooling and unroofing history of the provenance of the great Cambro-Ordovician sandstone sheet. Detrital rutiles in the Cambrian sandstone of Israel and Jordan define a unimodal age concentration at 0.59–0.58 Ga, preceding the timing of major orogenic sutures and predating the final assembly of Gondwana. Cooling to below the rutile U-Pb closure temperature followed continental-scale Pan-African granitoid intrusion at 0.63–0.60 Ga, signifying that rather than representing high-grade metamorphism the detrital rutile age spectra reflect widespread resetting, cooling and exhumation associated with late to post-tectonic igneous activity. The unimodal 0.59–0.58 Ga age spectra do not change significantly up the Cambrian sequence, implying exhumation prior to Cambrian sedimentation generated ample crustal material with an almost uniform U-Pb rutile signature that was prone to deliver immense amounts of detritus. Therefore, rather than reflecting progressive erosion of Cambrian Supermountains, the North Gondwana Cambrian sandstone represents secondary denudation of an already-exhumed metamorphic basement. Alongside the older (0.59–0.58 Ga) detrital rutile population, which dominates the Cambrian sequence, 0.55 Ga detrital rutiles first appear in the Ordovician of Jordan while 0.54 Ga rutile locally dominates the Ordovician from Ethiopia, some 2000 km upstream the Cambro-Ordovician fluvial system, close to its headwaters. The Ordovician drainage basin has thus been extended to include crustal vestiges that were exhumed coeval with Gondwana consolidation, but it is likely that most of the rock carapace that has been eroded from consolidating Cambrian orogenic sutures has been delivered to the south (modern coordinates).

The timing and mode of uplift of the Troodos ophiolite are constrained by low-temperature thermochronology combined with geomorphic analysis. Zircon (U-Th)/He and apatite fission track cooling ages in the Troodos plutonic sequence are all Cretaceous (83–106 Ma) and within error of published zircon U-Pb crystallization ages. This indicates early cooling of the oceanic crust and termination of spreading axis magmatism at ~90 Ma. Apatite (U-Th)/He ages decrease with reconstructed crustal depths from ~40 Ma near the top of the sheeted-dike complex to ~4 Ma within the mantle sequence. A prominent inflection point in the age versus depth curve defines the bottom of the exhumed helium partial retention zone and records the onset of rapid exhumation of the main Troodos massif at 6 ± 2 Ma. Inverse thermal modeling supports this conclusion, indicating that the timing of uplift is earlier than previously estimated. The boundaries of the mantle sequence exposed in the core of the Troodos structure closely overlap the boundaries of a concentric zone delineated by high local relief and higher channel steepness indices, indicating differential exhumation and uplift of this area relative to its surroundings. This zone also overlaps with a prominent negative Bouguer gravity anomaly. The timing and pattern of the Troodos ophiolite uplift suggest that it is driven by serpentinite diapirism, possibly triggered by Miocene reactivation of subduction along the Cyprean Arc. The worldwide ubiquity of suprasubduction zone ophiolites may thus reflect the importance of extensive serpentinization at the overthrusting mantle wedge in obduction processes.

The Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) is a province of mostly juvenile Neoproterozoic continental crust in NE Africa and Arabia, forming the northern extension of the East-African orogen. Subsequent to widespread, mostly late- to post-orogenic early-Ediacaran calc-alkaline granitoid emplacement, the latest magmatic phase in the ANS saw the intrusion of alkaline shallow plutons alongside volcanic massifs and dikes of variable compositions. While some of these intrusions were dated to 550–530 Ma by Rb-Sr and Ar-Ar, U-Pb zircon data has mostly limited ANS magmatism to no younger than ca. 580 Ma. Here we report new age and isotopic data from latest Neoproterozoic intrusions along a N-S transect within the northern ANS and its periphery, substantiating the record of a ca. 550 Ma igneous-thermal event in the area. In the northern Negev of Israel, mafic igneous rocks intruded into the subsurface late Neoproterozoic clastic wedge of the Zenifim Formation produced apatite U-Pb isochron ages between 557 and 545 Ma. In the Amram alkaline massif, 150 km to the south, an alkali-granite was dated to 605 ± 2.5 Ma by zircon U-Pb, but apatite U-Pb ages from all rocks of the massif concentrate at ca. 550 Ma indicating thermal resetting. Apatites from the zircon dated 611 ± 5 Ma Roded quartz diorite in the Elat area, south of Amram, produced a 600 ± 4 Ma U-Pb age, demonstrating that southern segments were not thermally reset at ca. 550 Ma. Nd isotopes in apatite and whole rock show the ca. 550 Ma igneous rocks to be variable in their isotopic composition, ranging between eNd(t)=(-4) – (+2), far less juvenile than typical ANS magmas. The ca. 550 Ma intrusions resemble in their age and isotopic properties Cadomian granites and volcanic rocks that are known from southern Turkey, Iran and Europe. We interpret the ca. 550 Ma igneous overprint and thermal resetting documented in the northernmost ANS as related to the superposition of Cadomian orogeny on the ANS periphery. This can be related to the late Ediacaran subduction of proto-Tethys accompanying the accretion of the Cadomian basement of the Tauride block to NE Africa and Arabia, before the area was overstepped by Cambrian platform sedimentation.

The Neoproterozoic Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS), which comprises the northern sector of the East African Orogen (EAO), has been deeply denuded in Ediacaran times and its erosional products were deposited across NE Africa and Arabia; they are also found in a number of peri-Gondwana terranes. A vast Late Neoproterozoic clastic wedge, locally interbedded with volcanics, developed on the northern outskirts of the ANS and spread into areas currently at the foothills of the Taurus and Zagros belts to coalesce into a wide peri-Arabian-Mesopotamian basin. The southern limit of this basin is manifested in the subsurface of Israel and Jordan by a few km thick arkose sequence, the Zenifim Formation, which underlies the Cambro–Ordovician quartz-rich sandstones. The detritus stored in this formation was mostly eroded from the adjacent ANS at the cessation of Neoproterozoic orogeny. Along a ∼150 km long transect in the subsurface of Israel, the arkosic facies of the Zenifim Formation changes from a proximal alluvial fan in the south, to a sea marginal facies in the north reflecting the transgression of the proto-Tethys onto the decaying Neoproterozoic orogen. We studied the detrital zircon U–Pb–Hf from core samples of arkose from different parts of the Zenifim Formation in order to constrain the composition of its provenance and to obtain the Late-Neoproterozoic detrital fingerprint of the ANS. The proximal alluvial fan and plain facies is dominated by a remarkable concentration of U–Pb detrital zircon ages between 0.6 and 0.7 Ga with a peak around 0.63 Ga, alongside a few older grains (0.8 Ga and 0.9 Ga). Pre-Neoproterozoic detrtital zircons are absent. The youngest detrital zircon population peaks at 0.60 Ga. The entire inventory of detrital zircons yielded positive ɛHf values between +11 and +5, generally overlapping ɛHf values of Neoproterozoic rocks of the northern ANS. It is notable that little indication for the exposure of the Cryogenian rocks of the ANS is represented by the detrital zircon signal in the alluvial fan deposits, a feature indicating the prevalence of Ediacaran granitoids in the provenance. Towards the north, the youngest detrital zircons in the sea marginal facies concentrate at 0.58 Ga implying this part of Zenifim Formation is among the youngest Late Neoproterozoic sedimentary units in the northern ANS. The detrital zircon signal exhibits a preponderance of Neoproterozoic-aged detrital zircons peaking at 0.6 Ga and 0.75–0.8 Ga, but Grenvillian-like age peaks at 0.92, 1.0 and 1.1 Ga are also identified. Additionally, a small number of 1.8, 2.1 and 2.6 Ga-aged zircons, and a few Late Neoproterozoic detrital zircons with negative ɛHf values also occur. Erosion of basement rocks in the northern ANS was generally capable of accounting for most of the detrital zircon spectra in the sea marginal facies, but we point out two other potential sources. Our preliminary investigations indicate that dike swarms that invaded the northern ANS in the mid Ediacaran carry abundant inherited pre-Neoproterozoic zircons and Neoproterozoic-aged zircons with negative ɛHf values. The presence of such zircons in post −0.58 Ga sediments, subsequently to the major diking phases, can thus be accounted for, at least partly, by the erosion of dikes and associated volcanics. Likewise, a northern provenance that resided within the Cadomian realm or laterally along the Gondwana margin could also play a role in delivering zircons of this type to the sea marginal facies of Zenifim Formation.

21 pages; International audience; The ∼3.5 Ga Dresser Formation from the North Pole Dome of the Pilbara Craton (Western Australia) contains some of the oldest evidence for life on Earth. Here, we present a detailed study of microstructure-specific carbon isotopic composition of organic matter (OM) preserved in Dresser Formation bedded cherts and hydrothermal chert vein using in situ Secondary-Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). The OM in these rocks occurs mainly as clots that, together with minor fine OM layers and laminae, are considered primary textures formed prior to host rock lithification. Other than rare OM-rich stylolites, no evidence was found for later OM migration beyond the micrometer scale. Average δ13C(OM) values in specific microstructural types range between −33.6‰ and −25.7‰. No correlation is seen between measured δ13C values and H/C ratios in the studied OM microstructures. This lack of correlation and the low metamorphic grade of the rocks studied argue against significant modification of OM isotopic composition by later metamorphic alteration. It is thus concluded that the range of δ13C values found in the samples represents primary OM isotopic variability. Within some individual samples variable δ13C(OM) values are correlated with specific microstructural types. This observation is not consistent with solely abiotic OM formation via Fisher-Tropsch type reactions. When compared with associated δ13C(ankerite) values, average δ13C(OM) values indicate C isotopic fractionation [Δ13C(Ank–OM)] of 25–33‰, which translates to dissolved CO2–OM isotopic fractionation [Δ13C(CO2–OM)] of 20–30‰. This range of Δ13C(CO2–OM) is consistent with enzymatic C fixation via the Calvin cycle utilized by photoautotrophs and the reductive acetyl-CoA pathway utilized by chemolithoautotrophs. Photosynthetic OM formation is supported by the relatively shallow water depth inferred for the Dresser environment and the restricted occurrence of stromatolites to shallow water deposits in this unit, whereas chemolithosynthesis is supported by the abundance of OM in sub-seafloor hydrothermal chert veins. The range of δ13C(OM) values observed in the samples may therefore represent the remains of different organisms utilizing different C-fixation pathways. Other biologic effects, such as the growth rate and density of microbial communities, and further heterotrophic overprinting of the autotrophic biomass may have also contributed to the observed range of δ13C(OM) values.

The final stages in the evolution of the Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) during the late Neoproterozoic include the deposition of sub-aerial volcano-sedimentary sequence above exhumed deep-seated plutonic-metamorphic rocks. In southern Israel the sediments in this sequence, known collectively as the Elat conglomerate unit, consist primarily of immature polymictic conglomerates whose composition closely reflects their underlying basement. U–Pb dating and Hf isotopic analysis of single zircons from two samples of the Elat conglomerate is used here to gain a complementary perspective on crustal evolution processes in the northern ANS. The U–Pb age spectra of the detrital zircons bear evidence for two major magmatic cycles separated by a lull; early island-arc magmatism occurred at 880–760 Ma and peaked at ∼800 Ma, whereas post-collisional granitoids and volcanics invaded the amalgamated arc crust between 660 and 580 Ma and peaked at 610–630 Ma. Integration with previously published data from Sinai suggests the aforementioned igneous cycles and the intervening lull are of regional significance. Although island-arc igneous activity in the ANS ranged mostly between 880 and 760 Ma, the occurrence of detrital zircons with strongly positive ɛ Hf( t ) values and U–Pb ages of up to 1.0 Ga in the Elat conglomerate suggests that island-arc magmatism in the northern ANS started in the early Tonian, earlier than previously recognized. The youngest zircons in the Elat conglomerate constrain its deposition age to ∼580 Ma. No younger U–Pb zircon ages were obtained for crystalline rocks in this region, our data thus indicates that 580 Ma marks the cessation of igneous activity in the northern ANS. The great majority of detrital zircons in the Elat conglomerate display positive ɛ Hf( t ) values, in line with the overall juvenile character of the Shield. Nonetheless, the relatively wide range of ɛ Hf( t ) values in zircons representing island-arc magmatism (between +3.6 and +11.6), and the presence of zircons with pre-Neoproterozoic ages and/or negative ɛ Hf( t ) values, suggest some contamination of the arc magmas by an older crustal component. The ɛ Hf( t ) values in zircons representing the younger, post-collisional magmas are all positive (between +4.9 and 9.2) and resemble those in the preceding arc-derived zircons. This feature is consistent with both reworking of mafic island-arc crust and contribution from mantle-derived melts during the post-collisional stage. Thus, it cannot be deciphered whether the 1000–580 Ma igneous activity in the northern ANS represents continuous juvenile crustal addition from the mantle, or subsequent recycling of early-formed arc crust during a later post-collisional phase.

A voluminous Cambrian–Ordovician sequence of quartz-rich sandstones was deposited in northern Gondwana following its assembly by a series of Neoproterozoic–Cambrian orogenic events. Paleocurrent markers indicate that the sediments were carried from Gondwana hinterland toward the supercontinent margins in the north (present coordinates). Derivation from Neoproterozoic terranes is evident from the ubiquity of detrital zircons with Neoproterozoic U-Pb ages, but the exact provenance of these siliciclastic deposits remains unclear. Herein we present new Hf isotopic data from U-Pb dated detrital zircons of the Cambrian–Ordovician sandstone that tops the juvenile Neoproterozoic basement of the Arabian-Nubian Shield in Israel and Jordan. It is remarkable that the detrital zircon Hf isotopic signal is in marked contrast to the Nd and Hf isotopic signature of the underlying basement. A preponderance (61%) of the Neoproterozoic-aged detrital zircons from the Cambrian–Ordovician sandstones yielded negative e Hf(t) values incompatible with a juvenile source. Therefore, most of the detrital zircons were derived from distant terranes comprising pre-Neoproterozoic crust reworked during the assembly of Gondwana, rather than from the adjacent Arabian-Nubian Shield. Because our sampling sites are situated at the northern tip of the Arabian-Nubian Shield, sand must have been transported several thousand kilometers before deposition. This finding also implies that the Arabian-Nubian Shield and other Neoproterozoic orogens of northeast Africa were completely worn down by the onset of Cambrian deposition and that vast areas in the northern part of Gondwana were low lying at that time.

This paper presents laser-ablation (MC)-ICP-MS single-zircon Hf isotopic data coupled with U–Pb geochronology from a unique rock inventory in southern Israel, recording ca. 300 m.y. of Neoproterozoic crustal evolution in the northern Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS). The early, island-arc magmatic cycle in this area is recorded by detrital zircons from arc-derived metasediments, dated between 870 and 760 Ma, and by ca. 790 and 740 Ma orthogneisses. Zircon ɛHf(t) values from these rocks are all positive, supporting previous isotopic evidence for the overall juvenile nature of northern ANS crust. Nonetheless, detrital zircons from the metasedimentary units display a wide range of ɛHf(t) values between +1 and +13. The lower values in this range suggest some contribution from an older crustal component. The involvement of pre-Neoproterozoic crustal component is also indicated by the occurrence of rare zircons with pre-Neoproterozoic ages and/or negative ɛHf(t) values in younger (post-collisional) magmas that intrude the arc sequence. Arc accretion was followed by a period of ∼60 m.y. of relative igneous tranquility interrupted only by the emplacement of local basic dike swarm at ca. 705 Ma. Average zircon ɛHf(t) value of +10 found in one of these dikes indicates a depleted mantle source possibly implying a mid-Neoproterozoic extensional phase. The later, post-collisional magmatic cycle marks the transition of the accreted arc complexes into a mature continental crust. It consists of voluminous 680–600 Ma granitoid plutons of calc-alkaline affinity, and subordinate 610–580 Ma intrusions of alkaline affinity. Average zircon ɛHf(t) values in these post-collisional rocks are all positive and range between +6 and +9, compatible with both mantle source and juvenile crust reworking.

[1] Tertiary convergence, high-pressure−low-temperature (HP-LT) metamorphism and subsequent exhumation in the internal Western Alps were concurrent with detrital deposition in foreland basins at the external periphery of the orogen. In the present work we have probed the geochronology and chemistry of white mica grains and metamorphic pebbles from the foreland basins of SE France in order to gain additional perspective on exhumation rates and mountain building processes in the internal domain of the Tertiary orogen. Our data indicate that throughout the Tertiary these basins were mainly fed from a relatively low pressure source, dominated by Si-poor micas yielding pre-Alpine 40Ar/39Ar ages. Small amounts of detritus composed of high-pressure minerals and pebbles are first detected in early Oligocene (∼30−32 Ma) strata of the Barreme basin. The 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of phengites from garnet-blueschist pebbles from these strata yielded 34 ± 3 Ma ages indicating rapid ascent and exposure of HP-LT rocks in the internal part of the orogen shortly after metamorphism. To explain the preponderance of pre-Alpine micas alongside the rare presence of Alpine HP-LT detritus we suggest that the general architecture of the Western Alps, whereby inner HP-LT metamorphic units are cut off from the SE France basins by a low-grade lid of Brianconnais back thrusts, was rapidly built in the early Oligocene and did not change significantly since then.
