Soil compaction due to field trafficking involves a complex interplay of machine-soil properties. In contrast to previous studies simulating worst field scenarios, this two-year field experiment investigated the effects of traffic-induced compaction involving moderate machine operational specifications (axle load, 3.16 Mg; mean ground contact pressure, 77.5 kPa) and lower field moisture contents (< field capacity) at the time of trafficking on soil physical properties, spatial root distribution, and corresponding maize growth and grain yield in sandy loam soil. Two compaction levels, i.e. two (C2) and six (C6) vehicle passes, were compared with a control (C0). Two maize ( Zea mays L.) cultivars, i.e. ZD-958 and XY-335, were used. Results showed topsoil (< 30 cm) compaction with increases in bulk density (BD) and penetration resistance (PR) up to 16.42% and 127.76%, respectively, in the 10-20 cm soil layer in 2017. Field trafficking resulted in a shallower and stronger hardpan. An increased number of traffic passes (C6) aggravated the effects, and the carryover effect was found. Higher BD and PR impaired root proliferation in deeper layers of topsoil (10-30 cm) and promoted shallow horizontal root distribution. However, XY-335, compared with ZD-958, showed deeper root distribution under compaction. Compaction-induced reductions in root biomass and length densities were respectively up to 41% and 36% in 10-20 cm and 58% and 42% in the 20-30 cm soil layer. Consequent yield penalties (7.6%-15.5%) underscore the detriments of compaction, even only in topsoil. This study aims to propose a novel and high-accuracy prediction model of plastic limit (PL) based on soil particles passing through sieve # 200 (0.075 mm) using gene expression programming (GEP). PL is used for the classification of fine-grained soils which are particles passing from sieve # 200. However, it is conventionally evaluated using sieve # 40 passing material. According to literature, PL should be determined using sieve # 200 passing material. Although, PL200 is considered the accurate representation of plasticity of soil, its' determination in laboratory is time consuming and difficult task. Additionally, it is influenced by clay and silt content along with sand particles. Thus, artificial intelligence-based techniques are considered viable solution to propose the prediction model which can incorporate multiple influencing parameters. In this regard, the laboratory experimental data was utilized to develop prediction model for PL200 using gene expression programming considering sand, clay, silt and PL using sieve 40 material (PL40) as input parameters. The prediction model was validated through multiple statistical checks such as correlation coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and relatively squared error (RSE). The sensitivity and parametric studies were also performed to further justify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed model. Background: Multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB has emerged as a major challenge to eliminate TB as envisioned at policy level. Distinctive traits associated with the disease such as physical, psychosocial and environmental dimensions may influence the treatment outcome in both directions. Quality of life (QoL) indicators may capture these traits distinctively., Objective: To quantify the differential effect of MDR-TB on specific QoL domains, their distributions across the strata and to check for possible interactions., Method:  This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 98 MDR-TB patients registered in the calendar year 2017 under National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) in a central Indian district using the WHO-QoL BREF Scale by patients in their vicinity. The transformed domain scores were descriptively summarized, stratified and exploratory visualised. Likert mapping for each item was done. A two-way ANOVA test was applied to check differences across strata and interaction effects were calculated., Result: Participants perceived a higher QoL in the social domain (median score 69, IQR 56-75) while the psychological health domain (median 31 IQR 20.5-44) was professed as most negotiated by disease. More than 50% of participants were found to be dissatisfied with their assumed physical status in item-wise analysis. A statistically significant interaction (p=0.008) was detected with education strata to income tertile most evident in the physical domain while psychological domain alone (p=0.017) without significant interaction with treatment duration (p=0.316) was associated with the type of TB. Overall QoL scores were tilted in favour of an urban setting, male gender and towards a relatively younger population., Conclusion:  The overall deficits in QoL are evident in the study, per se in the psychological and physical domains. Moreover there is an inequitable distribution of these scores as revealed in the study. Virulent bacterial viruses, also known as phages or bacteriophages, are considered as a potential option to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, their biology is still poorly understood, and only a fraction of phage genes is assigned with a function. To enable the first classification, we explored new options to test phage genes for their requirement on viral replication. As a model, we used the smallest known Bacillus subtilis phage Goe1, and the Cas9-based mutagenesis vector pRH030 as a genetic tool. All phage genes were specifically disrupted, and individual survival rates and mutant genotypes were investigated. Surviving phages relied on the genome integrity through host intrinsic non-homologues end joining system or a natural alteration of the Cas9 target sequence. Quantification of phage survivors and verifying the underlying genetic situation enables the classification of genes in essential or non-essential sets for viral replication. We also observed structural genes to hold more natural mutations than genes of the genome replication machinery., (© 2021 The Authors. This research covers the current status of occupational health and safety (OHS)-related practices in the informal construction segment of Pakistan. Data were collected, through interviews, from 316 construction sites employing 3577 workers. The results of the study reveal that both employers and workers lack knowledge of OHS laws/standards and no practices of this nature are enacted at these construction sites. Alarmingly, work-related accidents, whenever they happen, are not given due attention and there is no formal injury-report system. The informal construction industry employs a huge portion of the informal workforce, and lack of OHS happens at tremendous human cost. These research findings may thus play their role in strengthening the case for reforms in the sector. This study, if properly utilized, may also enable employers of the sector by increasing their knowledge about OHS practices and, as a result, trying to offer safer environments for their workers.

This study aims at investigating the burden and pattern of clothing related pillion riders' injuries and their helmet wearing pattern in Lahore, Pakistan. Data were collected for nine months (July 2013 to March 2014), reporting 13,248 motorcycle related injuries, out of which 8751 (66%) cases were related to the clothing related pillion riders' injuries. Out of these injuries 10.30% were severe injuries which can be prevented or reduced by proper safety measure, e.g. wearing helmet. It was also found that most of the fatalities were not wearing helmet. Injuries due to wearing of loose fitting clothes and absence of helmet are not uncommon in Pakistan and other underdeveloped parts of the world. Such accidents may be reduced by creating awareness and safety sense in the riders, where use of safe dress and helmet should be encouraged in order to avoid such fatal damages.
