Herein, $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ quantum dot (QDs) with controlled optical, structural, and electronic properties are synthesized using the femtosecond pulsed laser ablation in liquid (fs-PLAL) technique by varying pulse-width, ablation power, and ablation time to harness the potential for next-generation optoelectronics and quantum technology. Furthermore, this work elucidates key aspects of the mechanisms underlying the near-UV and blue emission, the accompanying large Stokes-shift, and the consequent change in sample color with laser exposure parameters pertaining to $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ QDs. Through spectroscopic analysis, including UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy, we successfully unravelled the mechanisms for the change in optoelectronic properties of $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ QDs with laser parameters. We realize that the occurrence of a secondary phase, specifically $\mathrm{MoO_{3-x}}$, is responsible for the significant Stokes-shift and blue emission observed in this QDs system. The primary factor influencing these activities is the electron transfer observed between these two phases, as validated by excitation dependent photoluminescence, XPS and Raman spectroscopies.

Twisted bilayer (t-BL) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their distinctive electronic properties, which arise due to the moire superlattices that lead to the emergence of flat bands and correlated electron phenomena. Also, these materials can exhibit interesting thermal properties, including a reduction in thermal conductivity. In this article, we report the thermal conductivity of monolayer (1L) and t-BL MoSe2 at some specific twist angles around two symmetric stacking AB (0 degree) and AB' (60 degree) and one intermediate angle 31 (degree) using the optothermal Raman technique. The observed thermal conductivity values are found to be 13, 23, and 30 W m-1K-1 for twist angle = 58 (degree), 31 (degree) and, 3 (degree) respectively, which is well supported by our first-principles calculation results. The reduction in thermal conductivity in t-BL MoSe2 compared to monolayer (38 W m-1K-1) can be explained by the occurrence of phonon scattering caused by the formation of a moire super-lattice. Herein, the emergence of multiple folded phonon branches and modification in the Brillouin zone caused by in-plane rotation are also accountable for the decrease in thermal conductivity observed in t-BL MoSe2. The theoretical phonon lifetime study and electron localization function (ELF) analysis further reveals the origin of angle-dependent thermal conductivity in t-BL MoSe2. This work paves the way towards tuning the angle-dependent thermal conductivity for any bilayer TMDCs system.

Atomically-thin layers of two-dimensional materials can be assembled in vertical stacks held together by relatively weak van der Waals forces, allowing for coupling between monolayer crystals with incommensurate lattices and arbitrary mutual rotation. A profound consequence of using these degrees of freedom is the emergence of an overarching periodicity in the local atomic registry of the constituent crystal structures, known as a moir\'e superlattice. Its presence in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) structures led to the observation of electronic minibands, whereas its effect enhanced by interlayer resonant conditions in twisted graphene bilayers culminated in the observation of the superconductor-insulator transition at magic twist angles. Here, we demonstrate that, in semiconducting heterostructures built of incommensurate MoSe2 and WS2 monolayers, excitonic bands can hybridise, resulting in the resonant enhancement of the moir\'e superlattice effects. MoSe2 and WS2 are specifically chosen for the near degeneracy of their conduction band edges to promote the hybridisation of intra- and interlayer excitons, which manifests itself through a pronounced exciton energy shift as a periodic function of the interlayer rotation angle. This occurs as hybridised excitons (hX) are formed by holes residing in MoSe2 bound to a twist-dependent superposition of electron states in the adjacent monolayers. For heterostructures with almost aligned pairs of monolayer crystals, resonant mixing of the electron states leads to pronounced effects of the heterostructure's geometrical moir\'e pattern on the hX dispersion and optical spectrum. Vertically stacked atomic layers from different layered crystals can be held together by van der Waals forces, which can be used for building novel heterostructures, offering a platform for developing a new generation of atomically thin, transparent and flexible devices. The performance of these devices is critically dependent on the layer thickness and the interlayer electronic coupling, influencing the hybridisation of the electronic states as well as charge and energy transfer between the layers. The electronic coupling is affected by the relative orientation of the layers as well as by the cleanliness of their interfaces. Here, we demonstrate an efficient method for monitoring interlayer coupling in heterostructures made from transition metal dichalcogenides using photoluminescence imaging in a bright-field optical microscope. The colour and brightness in such images are used here to identify mono- and few-layer crystals, and to track changes in the interlayer coupling and the emergence of interlayer excitons after thermal annealing in mechanically exfoliated flakes as well as a function of the twist angle in atomic layers grown by chemical vapour deposition. Material and crystal thickness sensitivity of the presented imaging technique makes it a powerful tool for characterisation of van der Waals heterostructures assembled by a wide variety of methods, using combinations of materials obtained through mechanical or chemical exfoliation and crystal growth., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures
