Search

Accretion discs are fundamental to much of astronomy. They can occur around stars both young and old, around compact objects they provide a window into the extremes of physics, and around supermassive black holes in galaxy centres they generate spectacular luminosities that can outshine the entire galaxy. However, our understanding of the inner workings of accretion discs remains far from complete. Here we revisit a conundrum in the observations of some of the simplest accreting systems; the Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). The high-accretion-rate states of (non-magnetic) CVs can be divided into the short-lived outbursts ($\sim$ a week) typical of dwarf novae (DNe) and the long-lived (and sometimes perpetual) high states of nova-like (NL) CVs. Since both sorts of high-state occur in approximately steady-state accretion discs with similar properties and accretors, we would expect them to display similar spectral energy distributions. However, previous analyses based on UV spectra from the {\it International Ultraviolet Explorer} have shown that their spectral energy distributions are different. We perform a re-analysis of the data using up to date calibrations and distance (and thus dereddening) estimates to test whether this difference persists and whether it is statistically significant over the sample. We find that it does persist and it is statistically significant. We present the discovery of an unusual set of flares in the nova-like variable V704 And. Using data from AAVSO, ASAS-SN, and ZTF, of the nova-like variable V704 And, we have discovered a trio of brightening events that occurred during the high state. These events elevate the optical brightness of the source from $\sim13.5$ magnitude to $\sim12.5$ magnitude. The events last for roughly a month, and exhibit the unusual shape of a slow rise and faster decay. Just after the third event we obtained data from regular monitoring with Swift, although by this time the flares had ceased and the source returned to its pre-flare level of activity in the high-state. The Swift observations confirm that during the high-state the source is detectable in the X-rays, and provide simultaneous UV and optical fluxes. As the source is already in the high-state prior to the flares, and thus the disc is expected to already be in the high-viscosity state, we conclude that the driver of the variations must be changes in the mass transfer rate from the companion star and we discuss possible mechanisms for such short-timescale mass transfer variations to occur., Comment: 5 pages + appendix. Context: The identification and characterisation of populations of young massive stars in (giant) HII regions provides important constraints on i) the formation process of massive stars and their early feedback on the environment, and ii) the initial conditions for population synthesis models predicting the evolution of ensembles of stars. Aims: We identify and characterise the stellar populations of the following young giant HII regions: M8, G333.6-0.2, and NGC6357. Methods: We acquired H- and K-band spectra of around 200 stars using The K-band KMOS on the ESO Very Large Telescope. The targets for M8 and NGC6357 were selected from the MYStIX project, which combines X-ray observations with near-infrared and mid-infrared data. For G333.6-0.2, the sample selection is based on the near-infrared colours combined with X-ray data. We introduce an automatic spectral classification method in order to obtain temperatures and luminosities for the observed stars. We analyse the stellar populations using their photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic properties and compared the position of the stars in the Hertzprung-Russell diagram with stellar evolution models to constrain their ages and mass ranges. Results: We confirm the presence of candidate ionising sources in the three regions and report new ones, including the first spectroscopically identified O stars in G333.6-0.2. In M8 and NGC6357, two populations are identified: i) OB main-sequence stars ($M > 5~\rm{M_{\odot}}$) and ii) pre-main sequence stars ($M\approx0.5-5~\rm{M_{\odot}}$). The ages of the clusters are $\sim$1-3~Myr, $< 3$~Myr, and $\sim$0.5-3~Myr for M8, G333.6-0.2, and NGC6357, respectively. We show that MYStIX selected targets have $>$ 90\% probability of being members of the HII region, whereas a selection based on near infrared (NIR) colours leads to a membership probability of only $\sim$70\%., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present the first volume-limited sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs), selected using the accurate parallaxes provided by the second data release (DR2) of the ESA $\mathit{Gaia}$ space mission. The sample is composed of 42 CVs within $150\,$pc, including two new systems discovered using the $\mathit{Gaia}$ data, and is $(77 \pm 10)\,$per cent complete. We use this sample to study the intrinsic properties of the Galactic CV population. In particular, the CV space density we derive, $\rho=(4.8^{+0.6}_{-0.8}) \times10^{-6}\,\mathrm{pc}^{-3}$, is lower than predicted by most binary population synthesis studies. We also find a low fraction of period bounce CVs, seven per cent, and an average white dwarf mass of $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = (0.83 \pm 0.17)\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. Both findings confirm previous results, ruling out the presence of observational biases affecting these measurements, as has been suggested in the past. The observed fraction of period bounce CVs falls well below theoretical predictions, by at least a factor of five, and remains one of the open problems in the current understanding of CV evolution. Conversely, the average white dwarf mass supports the presence of additional mechanisms of angular momentum loss that have been accounted for in the latest evolutionary models. The fraction of magnetic CVs in the $150\,$pc sample is remarkably high at $36\,$per cent. This is in striking contrast with the absence of magnetic white dwarfs in the detached population of CV progenitors, and underlines that the evolution of magnetic systems has to be included in the next generation of population models., Comment: Published in MNRAS. We have determined the rate of large accretion events in class I and II young stellar objects (YSOs) by comparing the all-sky digitised photographic plate surveys provided by SuperCOSMOS with the latest data release from Gaia (DR2). The long mean baseline of 55 years along with a large sample of class II YSOs ($\simeq$15,000) allows us to study approximately 1 million YSO-years. We find 139 objects with $\Delta R\geq1$~mag, most of which are found at amplitudes between 1 and 3 mag. The majority of YSOs in this group show irregular variability or long-lasting fading events, which is best explained as hot spots due to accretion or by variable extinction. There is a tail of YSOs at $\Delta R\geq3$~mag and they seem to represent a different population. Surprisingly many objects in this group show high-amplitude irregular variability over timescales shorter than 10 years, in contrast with the view that high-amplitude objects always have long outbursts. However, we find 6 objects that are consistent with undergoing large, long lasting accretion events, 3 of them previously unknown. This yields an outburst recurrence timescale of 112 kyr, with a 68\% confidence interval [74 to 180] kyr. This represents the first robust determination of the outburst rate in class II YSOs and shows that YSOs in their planet-forming stage do in fact undergo large accretion events, and with timescales of $\simeq$100,000 years. The overwhelming majority of objects visible to LSST lie within the Galactic Plane. Though many previous surveys have avoided this region for fear of stellar crowding, LSST's spatial resolution combined with its state-of-the-art Difference Image Analysis mean that it can conduct a high cadence survey of most of the Galaxy for the first time. Here we outline the many areas of science that would greatly benefit from an LSST survey that included the Galactic Plane, Magellanic Clouds and Bulge at a cadence of 2-3 d. Particular highlights include measuring the mass spectrum of black holes, and mapping the population of exoplanets in the Galaxy in relation to variations in star forming environments. But the same survey data will provide a goldmine for a wide range of science, and we explore possible survey strategies which maximize the scientific return for a number of fields including young stellar objects, cataclysmic variables and Neptune Trojans., Comment: White Paper submitted in response to the 2018 call for LSST cadence proposals

In our Galaxy, star formation occurs in a variety of environments, with a large fraction of stars formed in clusters hosting massive stars. OB stars have an important feedback on the evolution of protoplanetary disks around nearby young stars and likely on the process of planet formation occurring in them. The nearby massive association Cygnus OB2 is an outstanding laboratory to study this feedback. It is the closest massive association to our Sun, and hosts hundreds of massive stars and thousands of low mass members. In this paper, we analyze the spatial variation of the disk fraction in Cygnus OB2 and we study its correlation with the local values of Far and Extreme ultraviolet radiation fields and the local stellar surface density. We present definitive evidence that disks are more rapidly dissipated in the regions of the association characterized by intense local UV field and large stellar density. In particular, the FUV radiation dominates disks dissipation timescales in the proximity (i.e. within 0.5 pc) of the O stars. In the rest of the association, EUV photons potentially induce a significant mass loss from the irradiated disks across the entire association, but the efficiency of this process is reduced at increasing distances from the massive stars due to absorption by the intervening intracluster material. We find that disk dissipation due to close stellar encounters is negligible in Cygnus OB2, and likely to have affected 1% or fewer of the stellar population. Disk dissipation is instead dominated by photoevaporation. We also compare our results to what has been found in other young clusters with different massive populations, concluding that massive associations like Cygnus OB2 are potentially hostile to protoplanetary disks, but that the environments where disks can safely evolve in planetary systems are likely quite common in our Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS as part of the special issue on the Chandra Cygnus OB2 Legacy Project

The young massive OB association Cygnus OB2, in the Cygnus X complex, is the closest (1400 pc) star forming region to the Sun hosting thousands of young low mass stars and up to 1000 OB stars, among which are some of the most massive stars known in our Galaxy. This region holds great importance for several fields of modern astrophysics, such as the study of the physical properties of massive and young low-mass stars and the feedback provided by massive stars on star and planet formation process. Cygnus OB2 has been recently observed with Chandra/ACIS-I as part of the 1.08Msec Chandra Cygnus OB2 Legacy Project. This survey detected 7924 X-ray sources in a square degree area centered on Cyg OB2. Since a proper classification and study of the observed X-ray sources also requires the analysis of their optical and infrared counterparts, we combined a large and deep set of optical and infrared catalogs available for this region with our new X-ray catalog. In this paper we describe the matching procedure and present the combined catalog containing 5703 sources. The INT/WFC Photometric H-Alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is a 1800 square degrees imaging survey covering Galactic latitudes |b| < 5 deg and longitudes l = 30 to 215 deg in the r, i and H-alpha filters using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-metre Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in La Palma. We present the first quality-controlled and globally-calibrated source catalogue derived from the survey, providing single-epoch photometry for 219 million unique sources across 92% of the footprint. The observations were carried out between 2003 and 2012 at a median seeing of 1.1 arcsec (sampled at 0.33 arcsec/pixel) and to a mean 5\sigma-depth of 21.2 (r), 20.0 (i) and 20.3 (H-alpha) in the Vega magnitude system. We explain the data reduction and quality control procedures, describe and test the global re-calibration, and detail the construction of the new catalogue. We show that the new calibration is accurate to 0.03 mag (rms) and recommend a series of quality criteria to select the most reliable data from the catalogue. Finally, we demonstrate the ability of the catalogue's unique (r-Halpha, r-i) diagram to (1) characterise stellar populations and extinction regimes towards different Galactic sightlines and (2) select H-alpha emission-line objects. IPHAS is the first survey to offer comprehensive CCD photometry of point sources across the Galactic Plane at visible wavelengths, providing the much-needed counterpart to recent infrared surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The VST Photometric Halpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) is surveying the southern Milky Way in u, g, r, i and Halpha at 1 arcsec angular resolution. Its footprint spans the Galactic latitude range -5 < b < +5 at all longitudes south of the celestial equator. Extensions around the Galactic Centre to Galactic latitudes +/-10 bring in much of the Galactic Bulge. This ESO public survey, begun on 28th December 2011, reaches down to 20th magnitude (10-sigma) and will provide single-epoch digital optical photometry for around 300 million stars. The observing strategy and data pipelining is described, and an appraisal of the segmented narrowband Halpha filter in use is presented. Using model atmospheres and library spectra, we compute main-sequence (u - g), (g - r), (r - i) and (r - Halpha) stellar colours in the Vega system. We report on a preliminary validation of the photometry using test data obtained from two pointings overlapping the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. An example of the (u - g, g - r) and (r - Halpha, r - i) diagrams for a full VPHAS+ survey field is given. Attention is drawn to the opportunities for studies of compact nebulae and nebular morphologies that arise from the image quality being achieved. The value of the u band as the means to identify planetary-nebula central stars is demonstrated by the discovery of the central star of NGC 2899 in survey data. In this Letter, we analyse the distributions of stellar ages in Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in spiral arms, inter-arm spurs, and at large galactic radii, where the spiral arms are relatively weak. We use the results of numerical simulations of galaxies, which follow the evolution of GMCs and include star particles where star formation events occur. We find that GMCs in spiral arms tend to have predominantly young (< 10 Myr) stars. By contrast, clouds which are the remainders of spiral arm GMAs that have been sheared into inter-arm GMCs, contain fewer young (< 10 Myr) stars, and more ~20 Myr stars. We also show that clouds which form in the absence of spiral arms, due to local gravitational and thermal instabilities, contain preferentially young stars. We propose the age distributions of stars in GMCs will be a useful diagnostic to test different cloud evolution scenarios, the origin of spiral arms, and the success of numerical models of galactic star formation. The formation of stars in massive clusters is one of the main modes of the star formation process. However, the study of massive star forming regions is hampered by their typically large distances to the Sun. One exception to this is the massive star forming region Cygnus OB2 in the Cygnus X region, at the distance of about 1400 pc. Cygnus OB2 hosts very rich populations of massive and low-mass stars, being the best target in our Galaxy to study the formation of stars, circumstellar disks, and planets in presence of massive stars. In this paper we combine a wide and deep set of photometric data, from the r band to 24 micron, in order to select the disk bearing population of stars in Cygnus OB2 and identify the class I, class II, and stars with transition and pre-transition disks. We selected 1843 sources with infrared excesses in an area of 1 degree x 1 degree centered on Cyg OB2 in several evolutionary stages: 8.4% class I, 13.1% flat-spectrum sources, 72.9% class II, 2.3% pre-transition disks, and 3.3% transition disks. The spatial distribution of these sources shows a central cluster surrounded by a annular overdensity and some clumps of recent star formation in the outer region. We present the analysis result of a gravitational binary-lensing event OGLE-2005-BLG-018. The light curve of the event is characterized by 2 adjacent strong features and a single weak feature separated from the strong features. The light curve exhibits noticeable deviations from the best-fit model based on standard binary parameters. To explain the deviation, we test models including various higher-order effects of the motions of the observer, source, and lens. From this, we find that it is necessary to account for the orbital motion of the lens in describing the light curve. From modeling of the light curve considering the parallax effect and Keplerian orbital motion, we are able to measure not only the physical parameters but also a complete orbital solution of the lens system. It is found that the event was produced by a binary lens located in the Galactic bulge with a distance $6.7\pm 0.3$ kpc from the Earth. The individual lens components with masses $0.9\pm 0.3\ M_\odot$ and $0.5\pm 0.1\ M_\odot$ are separated with a semi-major axis of $a=2.5 \pm 1.0$ AU and orbiting each other with a period $P=3.1 \pm 1.3$ yr. The new VISual and Infrared Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) has started operations. Over its first five years it will be collecting data for six public surveys, one of these is the near-infrared YJKsVISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). This survey comprises the LMC, the SMC, the Bridge connecting the two galaxies and two fields in the Stream. This paper provides an overview of the VMC survey strategy and presents first science results. The main goals of the VMC survey are the determination of the spatially resolved SFH and 3D structure of the Magellanic system. Therefore, the VMC survey is designed to reach stars as faint as the oldest main sequence turn-off point and to constrain the mean magnitude of pulsating variable stars such as RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids. This paper focuses on observations of VMC fields in the LMC obtained between November 2009 and March 2010. These observations correspond to a 7% completeness of the LMC fields. The VMC observations consist of multi-epoch measurements organised following a specific structure. The data were reduced using the VISTA Data Flow System pipeline whose source catalogues were produced and made available via the VISTA Science Archive. The analysis of the data shows that the sensitivity in each wave band agrees with expectations. Uncertainties and completeness of the data are also derived. The first science results, aimed at assessing the science quality of the VMC data, include an overview of the distribution of stars in colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams, the detection of planetary nebulae and of stellar clusters, and the Ks band light-curve of variable stars. The VMC survey represents a tremendous improvement, in spatial resolution and sensitivity, on previous panoramic observations of the Magellanic system in the near-infrared and complements nicely the deep observations at other wavelengths. The UV-Excess Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane images a 10x185 degree wide band, centered on the Galactic Equator using the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope in four bands (U,g,r,HeI5875) down to ~21st-22nd magnitude (~20th in HeI5875). The setup and data reduction procedures are described. Simulations of the colours of main-sequence stars, giant, supergiants, DA and DB white dwarfs and AM CVn stars are made, including the effects of reddening. It is thought that the first generations of massive stars in the Universe were an important, and quite possibly dominant, source of the ultra-violet radiation that reionized the hydrogen gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM); a state in which it has remained to the present day. Measurements of cosmic microwave background anisotropies suggest that this phase-change largely took place in the redshift range z=10.8 +/- 1.4, while observations of quasars and Lyman-alpha galaxies have shown that the process was essentially completed by z=6. However, the detailed history of reionization, and characteristics of the stars and proto-galaxies that drove it, remain unknown. Further progress in understanding requires direct observations of the sources of ultra-violet radiation in the era of reionization, and mapping the evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction through time. The detection of galaxies at such redshifts is highly challenging, due to their intrinsic faintness and high luminosity distance, whilst bright quasars appear to be rare beyond z~7. Here we report the discovery of a gamma-ray burst, GRB 090423, at redshift z=8.26 -0.08 +0.07. This is well beyond the redshift of the most distant spectroscopically confirmed galaxy (z=6.96) and quasar (z=6.43). It establishes that massive stars were being produced, and dying as GRBs, ~625 million years after the Big Bang. In addition, the accurate position of the burst pinpoints the location of the most distant galaxy known to date. Larger samples of GRBs beyond z~7 will constrain the evolving rate of star formation in the early universe, while rapid spectroscopy of their afterglows will allow direct exploration of the progress of reionization with cosmic time., Comment: Submitted to Nature

We have obtained multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy of 218 candidate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the young clusters around sigma Ori and lambda Ori. We find that 196 targets are cluster members based on their radial velocity, the equivalent width of their NaI 8200 lines and the spectral type from their TiO band strength. We have identified 11 new binary stars among the cluster members based on their variable radial velocity and an additional binary from the variation in its line width and shape. The sample covers the magnitude range Ic=14-18.9 (mass =~ 0.55-0.03 Msun), but all of the binary stars are brighter than Ic=16.6 (mass =~ 0.12Msun) and 10 are brighter than Ic=15.5 (mass =~ 0.23Msun). There is a significant lack of spectroscopic binaries in our sample at faint magnitudes even when we account for the decrease in sensitivity with increasing magnitude. We can reject the hypothesis that the fraction of spectroscopic binaries is a uniform function of Ic magnitude with more than 99% confidence. The spectroscopic binary fraction for stars more massive than about 0.1Msun (Ic < 16.9) is f_bright=0.095(+0.012)(-0.028). The 90% confidence upper limit to the spectroscopic binary fraction for very low mass (VLM) stars (mass < 0.1Msun) and brown dwarfs (BDs) is f_faint < 7.5%. The hypothesis that f_bright and f_faint are equal can be rejected with 90% confidence. We conclude that we have found strong evidence for a change in the fraction of spectroscopic binaries among young VLM stars and brown dwarfs when compared to more massive stars in the same star-forming region. This implies a difference in the total binary fraction between VLM stars and BDs compared to more massive stars or a difference in the distribution of semi-major axes, or both. The INT/WFC Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is an imaging survey being carried out in H-alpha, r' and i' filters, with the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-metre Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) to a depth of r'=20 (10 sigma). The survey is aimed at revealing large scale structure in our local galaxy, and also the properties of key early and late populations making up the Milky Way. Mapping emission line objects enables a particular focus on objects in the young and old stages of stellar evolution ranging from early T-Tauri stars to late planetary nebulae. In this paper we present the IPHAS Initial Data Release, primarily a photometric catalogue of about 200 million unique objects, coupled with associated image data covering about 1600 square degrees in three passbands. We note how access to the primary data products has been implemented through use of standard virtual observatory publishing interfaces. Simple traditional web access is provided to the main IPHAS photometric catalogue, in addition to a number of common catalogues (such as 2MASS) which are of immediate relevance. Access through the AstroGrid VO Desktop opens up the full range of analysis options, and allows full integration with the wider range of data and services available through the Virtual Observatory. The IDR represents the largest dataset published primarily through VO interfaces to date, and so stands as an examplar of the future of survey data mining. The Magellanic System represents one of the best places to study the formation and evolution of galaxies. Photometric surveys of various depths, areas and wavelengths have had a significant impact on our understanding of the system; however, a complete picture is still lacking. VMC (the VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic System) will provide new data to derive the spatially resolved star formation history and to construct a three-dimensional map of the system. We present a phase-resolved spectroscopic study of the secondary star in the cataclysmic variable U Gem. We use our data to measure the radial velocity semi-amplitude, systemic velocity and rotational velocity of the secondary star. Combining this with literature data allows us to determine masses and radii for both the secondary star and white dwarf which are independent of any assumptions about their structure. We use these to compare their properties with those of field stars and find that both components follow field mass-radius relationships. The secondary star has the mass, radius, luminosity and photometric temperature of an M2 star, but a spectroscopic temperature of M4. The latter may well be due to a high metallicity. There is a troubling inconsistency between the radius of the white dwarf inferred from its gravitational redshift and inclination and that inferred from its temperature, flux, and astrometric distance. We find that there are two fundamental limits to the accuracy of the parameters we can derive. First the radial velocity curve of the secondary star deviates from a sinusoid, in part because of its asphericity (which can be modelled) and in part because the line flux is not evenly distributed over its surface. Second we cannot be certain which spectral type is the best match for the lines of the secondary star, and the derived rotational velocity is a function of the spectral type of the template star used., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. We have performed IZJHKL' observations in NGC 6611, the young cluster that ionises the Eagle Nebula. We have discovered a rich pre-main sequence concentrated around the O-stars in the cluster. As measured by their L'-band excesses, at least 58% +/- 5% of the pre-main sequence objects (0.45 Msun < M < 2 Msun) have circumstellar discs. By comparing this disc frequency with frequencies determined for regions where the pre-main sequence stars are subject to less ionising radiation, we find no evidence that the harsher environment of NGC 6611 (approximately an order of magnitude more ionising Lyman continuum radiation than the Trapezium cluster) significantly hastens the dissipation of circumstellar discs around solar-mass stars., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS letters

The globular cluster M15 was observed on three occasions with the High Resolution Camera on board Chandra in 2001 in order to investigate the X-ray source population in the cluster centre. After subtraction of the two bright central sources, four faint sources were identified within 50 arcsec of the core. One of these sources is probably the planetary nebula, K648, making this the first positive detection of X-rays from a planetary nebula inside a globular cluster. Another two are identified with UV variables (one previously known), which we suggest are cataclysmic variables (CVs). The nature of the fourth source is more difficult to ascertain, and we discuss whether it is possibly a quiescent soft X-ray transient (qSXT) or also a CV., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. The luminous low-mass X-ray binary X2127+119 in the core of the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078), which has an orbital period of 17 hours, has long been assumed to contain a donor star evolving off the main sequence, with a mass of 0.8 solar masses (the main-sequence turn-off mass for M15). We present orbital-phase-resolved spectroscopy of X2127+119 in the H-alpha and He I 6678 spectral region, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. We show that these data are incompatible with the assumed masses of X2127+119's component stars. The continuum eclipse is too shallow, indicating that much of the accretion disc remains visible during eclipse, and therefore that the size of the donor star relative to the disc is much smaller in this high-inclination system than the assumed mass-ratio allows. Furthermore, the flux of X2127+119's He I 6678 emission, which has a velocity that implies an association with the stream-disc impact region, remains unchanged through eclipse, implying that material from the impact region is always visible. This should not be possible if the previously-assumed mass ratio is correct. We present integral field spectroscopy of X2127+119, the luminous X-ray binary in the globular cluster M15, obtained with INTEGRAL/WYFFOS on the William Herschel Telescope. We find that tomograms of HeII 4686 line profiles appear to be incompatible with the previously-assumed view of X2127+119, in which the binary consists of a 1.4-solar-mass neutron star and a 0.8-solar-mass sub-giant companion near the main-sequence turn-off for M15. Our data imply a much smaller mass ratio M_2/M_x of 0.1. We find that models of X2127+119 with black-hole compact objects give a poor fit to our data, while a neutron-star compact object is consistent with the data, implying that X2127+119's companion may have a much lower mass (~0.1 solar masses) than previously assumed. As an 0.1-solar-mass main-sequence star would be unable to fill its Roche lobe in a binary with X2127+119's orbital period (17.1 hours), the companion is likely to be the remnant of a significantly more massive star which has had most of its envelope stripped away., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the optical and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, UX Ursae Majoris is a deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable. However, no soft X-ray eclipse was detected in ROSAT observations. We have obtained a 38 ksec XMM-Newton observation to further constrain the origin of the X-rays. The combination of spectral and timing information allows us to identify two components in the X-ray emission of the system. The soft component, dominant below photon energies of 2 keV, can be fitted with a multi-temperature plasma model and is uneclipsed. The hard component, dominant above 3 keV, can be fitted with a kT ~ 5 keV plasma model and appears to be deeply eclipsed. We suggest that the most likely source of the hard X-ray emission in UX UMa, and other systems in high mass transfer states, is the boundary layer., Comment: To appear in MNRAS Letters

We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic survey of cool M dwarf candidates in the young open cluster NGC 2547. Using the 2dF fiber spectrograph, we have searched for the luminosity at which lithium remains unburned in an attempt to constrain the cluster age. The lack of a population of individual lithium-rich objects towards the faint end of our sample places a very strong lower limit to the cluster age of 35 Myr. However, the detection of lithium in the averaged spectra of our faintest targets suggests that the lithium depletion boundary lies at 9.5 < M(I) < 10.0 and that the cluster age is < 54 Myr. The age of NGC 2547 judged from fitting isochrones to low-mass pre-main-sequence stars in colour-magnitude diagrams is 20-35 Myr using the same evolutionary models. The sense and size of the discrepancy in age determined by these two techniques is similar to that found in another young cluster, IC 2391, and in the low-mass pre main-sequence binary system, GJ 871.1AB. We suggest that the inclusion of rotation or dynamo-generated magnetic fields in the evolutionary models could reconcile the two age determinations, but only at the expense of increasing the cluster ages beyond that currently indicated by the lithium depletion. We report the discovery of low-mass PMS stars in the younger subgroup of the Cepheus OB3 association, Cep OB3b, using {\it UBVI} CCD photometry and spectroscopy. The location of a PMS is well defined in a V versus (V-I) colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Multi-fibre spectroscopy results of optically-selected PMS candidates confirm the T Tauri nature of 10 objects, with equal numbers of classical and weak-line TTS. There are 6 other objects which we classify as possible PMS stars. The newly discovered TTS have masses in the range 0.9 - 3.0 Msun and ages from <1 to nearly 10 Myr, based on the Siess et al.(2000) isochrones. Their location close to the O and B Their location close to the O and B stars of the association demonstrates that low-mass star formation is possible in this hostile environment dominated by early-type stars and that the latter must have been less effective in eroding the circumstellar discs of their lower mass siblings compared to other OB associations (e.g. lambda Ori). We attribute this to the nature of the local environment, speculating that the bulk of molecular material, which shielded low-mass stars from the ionising radiation of their early-type siblings, has only recently been removed (abridged)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present results from a two week multi-longitude photometric campaign on TV Col held in 2001 January. The data confirm the presence of a permanent positive superhump found in re-examination of extensive archive photometric data of TV Col. The 6.3-h period is 15 per cent longer than the orbital period and obeys the well known relation between superhump period excess and binary period. At 5.5-h, TV Col has an orbital period longer than any known superhumping cataclysmic variable and, therefore, a mass ratio which might be outside the range at which superhumps can occur according to the current theory. We present HST UV observations of the high-inclination low mass X-ray binary AC211 (X2127+119), which is located in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). We have discovered a CIV P Cygni profile in this system, which confirms the existence of an outflow from AC211. The outflow velocity as measured from the P Cygni profile is 1500km/s. We calculate that the mass lost through this wind is too small to support a large period derivative as favoured by Homer & Charles (1998). Using new X-ray observations we have revised the ephemeris for AC211 and we find no evidence in support of a period derivative. The UV spectrum exhibits several absorption features due to O, Si and C. The very strong HeII line at 1640A is not seen to modulate strongly with orbital phase, suggesting its origin lies in the outer parts of the system. The bright X-ray binary X2127+119 in the core of the globular cluster M15 has long been thought to be in an unusual evolutionary state, in which the binary is embedded in a common envelope. Support for this idea comes from X2127+119's absorption lines, which are blue shifted at all orbital phases, indicating the existence of outflows from the system. A common-envelope scenario implies that the absorption lines should exhibit maximum blue shift near mid-eclipse (binary phase 0.0). We have re-analysed INT spectra of X2127+119 obtained in 1986, 1987 and 1988 using the latest orbital ephemeris (substantially different from that used in the original analysis), and find that the orbital phase at which the absorption lines show a maximum blue shift is not 0.0, but rather 0.25 -- 0.3. These results indicate that a common-envelope scenario for X2127+119 may not work. Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are interacting binary systems where a cool, rapidly rotating secondary star passes material to a white dwarf. If this mass loss is to continue then there must be continuous angular momentum loss from the system. By analogy with the Sun and other cool stars, it has been assumed that magnetic braking is responsible, angular momentum being carried away by an ionised wind from the secondary star, threading a dynamo-generated magnetic field. We have discovered TiO absorption in the spectrum of SS Cyg, whose secondary star should be too hot to show such features. The most likely explanation of its presence is cool star spots caused by the strong (0.1T) fields required by the magnetic braking theories., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ letters

We present X-ray observations of the high-inclination low-mass X-ray binary system X2127+119 (AC211) in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). The observations consist of data acquired in 1996 with the RXTE satellite and in 1995 with the ASCA satellite. Also, the MPC1 data from the 1988 GINGA observations were de-archived and re-analysed. The phase-folded 2-10 keV hardness ratios from all three missions differ significantly indicating that the system can exhibit different spectral behaviours. We find that the X-ray eclipse profiles can be described relatively well using a simple model where the secondary star passes in front of a large X-ray emitting region. For this we require a mass ratio (q=M1/M2) of about one. The radius of this X-ray emitting region is ~0.8 RL1 and its vertical extent 60 degrees above the orbital plane. We suggest that if this X-ray emitting region were an optically thick corona, it would explain various puzzling aspects of this system. We also show that the X-ray dip observed at phases around 0.65 does not conform with the idea that the dip is caused by vertically extended material associated with the stream/disc impact region, but that it could be due to structure in the inner parts of the disc., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present optical spectroscopy of 71 photometric candidate low-mass members of the cluster associated with Sigma Orionis. Thirty-five of these are found to pass the lithium test and hence are confirmed as true cluster members, covering a mass range of <0.055-0.3M_{sun}, assuming a mean cluster age of <5 Myr. We find evidence for an age spread on the (I, I-J) colour magnitude diagram, members appearing to lie in the range 1-7 Myr. There are, however, a significant fraction of candidates that are non-members, including some previously identified as members based on photometry alone. We see some evidence that the ratio of spectroscopically confirmed members to photometric candidates decreases with brightness and mass. We take a critical look at the lithium depletion boundary (LDB) technique that has recently been used to derive the ages of open clusters. We identify the sources of experimental and systematic error and show that the probable errors are larger by approximately a factor two than presently claimed in the literature. We then use the Pleiades LDB age and photometry in combination with evolutionary models to define empirical colour-T_eff relations that can be applied to younger clusters. We find that these relationships DO NOT produce model isochrones that match the younger cluster data. Archival data on permanent superhump systems are compiled to test the thermal stability of their accretion discs. We find that their discs are almost certainly thermally stable as expected. This result confirms Osaki's suggestion (1996) that permanent superhump systems form a new subclass of cataclysmic variables (CVs), with relatively short orbital periods and high mass transfer rates. We note that if the high accretion rates estimated in permanent superhump systems represent their mean secular values, then their mass transfer rates cannot be explained by gravitational radiation, therefore, either magnetic braking should be extrapolated to systems below the period gap or they must have mass transfer cycles. Alternatively, a new mechanism that removes angular momentum from CVs below the gap should be invoked. We suggest applying the nova cycle scenarios offered for systems above the period gap to the short orbital period CVs. Permanent superhumps have been observed in the two non-magnetic ex-novae with binary periods below the gap. Their post-nova magnitudes are brighter than their pre-outburst values. In one case (V1974 Cyg) it has been demonstrated that the pre-nova should have been a regular SU UMa system. Thus it is the first nova whose accretion disc was observed to change its thermal stability. If the superhumps in this system indicate persistent high mass transfer rates rather than a temporary change induced by irradiation from the hot post-nova white dwarf, it is the first direct evidence for mass transfer cycles in CVs. We present 53 simultaneous photometric (I band) and spectroscopic (6900-9500 Angstroms) observations of J0422+32, taken during December 1997. From these we determine that J0422+32 was in its lowest state yet observed, at I=20.44+/-0.08. Using relative spectrophotometry, we show that it is possible to correct very accurately for telluric absorption. Following this, we use the TiO bands at 7055 Angstroms and 7589 Angstroms for a radial velocity study and thereby obtain a semi-amplitude of 378+/-16kms-1, which yields f(M)=1.191+/-0.021M_solar and q=9.0+2.2-2.7, consistent with previous observations. We further demonstrate that this little explored method is very powerful for such systems. We also determine a new orbital ephemeris of HJD=2450274.4156+/-0.0009 + 0.2121600+/-0.0000002E. We see some evidence for an ellipsoidal modulation, from which we determine the orbital inclination of J0422+32 to be less than 45 degrees. We therefore calculate a minimum mass for the primary of 2.22M_solar, consistent with a black hole, but not necessarily the super-massive one proposed by Beekman et al (1997). We obtain an M4-5 spectral type for the secondary star and determine that the secondary contributes 38+/-2% of the flux that we observe from J0422+32 over the range 6950-8400 Angstroms. We present red spectra in the region 7000-8300A of the eclipsing dwarf nova IP Peg, with simultaneous narrow-band photometry centered at 7322A. We show that by placing a second star on the slit we can correct for the telluric absorption bands which have hitherto made the TiO features from the secondary star unusable. We use these TiO features to carry out a radial velocity study of the secondary star, and find this gives an improvement in signal-to-noise of a factor two compared with using the Na{I} doublet. In contrast with previous results, we find no apparent ellipticity in the radial velocity curve. As a result we revise the semi-amplitude to 331.3+/-5.8km/s, and thus the primary and secondary star masses to 1.05Mo and 0.33Mo respectively. Although this is the lowest mass yet derived for the secondary star, it is still over-massive for its observed spectral type. However, the revised mass and radius bring IP Peg into line with other CVs in the mass-radius-period relationships. By fitting the phase resolved spectra around the TiO bands to a mean spectrum, we attempt to isolate the lightcurve of the secondary star. The resulting light curve has marked deviations from the expected ellipsoidal shape. The largest difference is at phase 0.5, and can be explained as an eclipse of the secondary star by the disc, indicating that the disc is optically thick when viewed at high inclination angles., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages and 10 figures

We report the serendipitous discovery of a population of low mass, pre-main sequence stars (PMS) in the direction of the Wolf-Rayet/O-star binary system gamma^{2} Vel and the Vela OB2 association. We argue that gamma^{2} Vel and the low mass stars are truly associated, are approximately coeval and that both are at distances between 360-490 pc, disagreeing at the 2 sigma level with the recent Hipparcos parallax of gamma^{2} Vel, but consistent with older distance estimates. Our results clearly have implications for the physical parameters of the gamma^{2} Vel system, but also offer an exciting opportunity to investigate the influence of high mass stars on the mass function and circumstellar disc lifetimes of their lower mass PMS siblings., Comment: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Letters - in press

We present the 45-yr record of EX Hya's lightcurve and discuss the characteristics of its 15 observed outbursts. We then concentrate on the 1998 outburst, reporting the first outburst X-ray observations. We discover an X-ray beat-cycle modulation, indicating that an enhanced accretion stream couples directly with the magnetosphere in outburst, confirming our previous prediction. Optical eclipse profiles late in outburst show that the visible light is dominated by an enhanced mass-transfer stream overflowing the accretion disc. We are uncertain whether the enhanced mass transfer is triggered by a disc instability, or by some other cause. We use the irradiated secondary star in the remnant of Nova Cyg 1975 as a probe of the cooling white dwarf. At superior conjunction the flux in the B band is dominated by the irradiated face of the secondary star. The heated face produces an orbital modulation which is dependent on the strength of the irradiating source. We present a comprehensive photometric dataset taken over the entire outburst of the eclipsing dwarf nova IP Peg in September/October 1997. Analysis of the lightcurves taken over the long rise to the peak-of-outburst shows conclusively that the outburst started near the centre of the disc and moved outwards. This is the first dataset that spatially resolves such an outburst. The dataset is consistent with the idea that long rise times are indicative of such `inside-out' outbursts. We show how the thickness and the radius of the disc, along with the mass transfer rate change over the whole outburst. In addition, we show evidence of the secondary and the irradiation thereof. We discuss the possibility of spiral shocks in the disc; however we find no conclusive evidence of their existence in this dataset., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to be appear in MNRAS

We present results from photometric observations of the dwarf nova system HT Cas during the eruption of November 1995. The data include the first two--colour observations of an eclipse on the rise to outburst. They show that during the rise to outburst the disc deviates significantly from steady state models, but the inclusion of an inner-disc truncation radius of about 4 $R_{wd}$ and a ``flared'' disc of semi-opening angle of $10^{\circ}$ produces acceptable fits. The disc is found to have expanded at the start of the outburst to about $0.41R_{L1}$, as compared to quiescent measurements. The accretion disc then gradually decreases in radius reaching $<0.32R_{L1}$ during the last stages of the eruption. We present ROSAT X-ray and optical light curves of the 1994 February superoutburst of the eclipsing SU UMa dwarf nova OY Carinae. There is no eclipse of the flux in the ROSAT HRI light curve. Contemporaneous `wide B' band optical light curves show extensive superhump activity and dips at superhump maximum. Eclipse mapping of these optical light curves reveals a disc with a considerable physical flare, even three days into the superoutburst decline. We include a later (1994 July) ROSAT PSPC observation of OY Car that allows us to put constraints on the quiescent X-ray spectrum. We find that while there is little to choose between OY Car and its fellow high inclination systems with regard to the temperature of the emitting gas and the emission measure, we have difficulties reconciling the column density found from our X-ray observation with the column found in HST UV observations by Horne et al.
