1. Numerical modelling of direct-injection gasoline fuel sprays

Abstract

This thesis presents a numerical study of the break-up and atomisation of gasoline fuel sprays injected into atmospheric flow conditions and environments related to combustion chamber conditions. Calculations of the fuel break-up process were achieved by four different models: Taylor Analogy Break-up (TAB), the wave instability theory (WAVE), the Hybrid Sheet-TAB and the Hybrid WAVE-FIPA models. The TAB model relates the break-up process to the droplet oscillations; whereas the WAVE models calculate the fuel break-up from the unstable waves on the droplet surface. The modified version of the TAB model, called the Hybrid Sheet-TAB model delays the start of the break-up further downstream from the nozzle tip. A new hybrid model, the WAVE-FIPA model, divides the spray atomisation processes into a primary stage, where the WAVE model is used, and a secondary stage, which is simulated using experimental correlations to calculate the break-up time for the low Weber number droplets.

Abstract

The article is aimed at defining the basic elements of sustainable development of local self-government in view of foreign experience. Ways of introducing reforms to effectively mobilize and utilize the local government resources have been determined. Consideration was given to the theoretical aspects of decentralization, which served as the basis for the adoption of a democratic model of government in Ukraine. The introduction of decentralization of power was analyzed in the context of the real status of the reform, problems encountered in its implementation, and measures for their effective implementation at both the local and the State levels. The steps taken by the EU Member States towards decentralization and the possibility of applying foreign experience by Ukraine were compared. It is concluded that the introduction of decentralized processes would contribute to the strengthening of democracy in the State and enhancing its stability.

Abstract

The article speaks about problems of formation of the investment and innovation potential in Ukraine. It identifies priority of development and introduction of the investment and innovation strategy for the national economy. It studies the role of state stimulation of the investment and innovation activity using direct and indirect methods. It considers foreign experience of tax stimulation of innovation activity. It analyses application of different tax preferences by different foreign states. It shows positive and negative sides of preferential taxation under conditions of financial instability of Ukrainian economy. In order to identify the level of investment activity the article analyses dynamics of change of the investment attractiveness index and shows problem aspects of attraction of foreign investments into the national economy. It identifies priorities of formation of efficient investment and innovation strategy of development of economy on the basis of a common system approach.

Abstract

Objective There is initial evidence that the use of volatile anesthetics can reduce the postoperative release of cardiac troponin I, the need for inotropic support, and the number of patients requiring prolonged hospitalization following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Nevertheless, small randomized controlled trials have failed to demonstrate a survival advantage. Thus, whether volatile anesthetics improve the postoperative outcome of cardiac surgical patients remains uncertain. An adequately powered randomized controlled trial appears desirable. Design Single blinded, international, multicenter randomized controlled trial with 1:1 allocation ratio. Setting Tertiary and University hospitals. Interventions Patients (n = 10,600) undergoing coronary artery bypass graft will be randomized to receive either volatile anesthetic as part of the anesthetic plan, or total intravenous anesthesia. Measurements and main results The primary end point of the study will be one-year mortality (any cause). Secondary endpoints will be 30-day mortality; 30-day death or non-fatal myocardial infarction (composite endpoint); cardiac mortality at 30 day and at one year; incidence of hospital re-admission during the one year follow-up period and duration of intensive care unit, and hospital stay. The sample size is based on the hypothesis that volatile anesthetics will reduce 1-year unadjusted mortality from 3% to 2%, using a two-sided alpha error of 0.05, and a power of 0.9. Conclusions The trial will determine whether the simple intervention of adding a volatile anesthetic, an intervention that can be implemented by all anesthesiologists, can improve one-year survival in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Abstract

Background: Hydatid disease is a serious health hazard and a major problem to the community in Iraq. The disease is still endemic as witnessed in everyday surgical practice. The aim of this prospective study was to review the management of pulmonary hydatid disease (PHD) in two major thoracic surgical centers (Ibn-Alnafis and Medical City Teaching Hospitals), Baghdad, Iraq over one year period. Materials and Methods: Sixty six patients (38 females and 28 males) with PHD admitted and treated surgically in the Departments of Thoracic Surgery in the aforementioned hospitals were studied. Demographic and clinical features were obtained by direct patients’ interviews and thorough physical examination. The diagnosis in the vast majority of patients was based on plain chest radiography while few had bronchoscopy. All patients had posterolateral thoracotomy for removal of pulmonary hydatid cysts (PHC). The clinical and radiographic findings as well as operative procedures and postoperative complications were reviewed. Results: The age ranged from two and a half years to 60 years with a mean of 22.3. Sixty percent of patients were in second and third decades. Most patients (n = 51, 77%) lived in rural areas. Housewives and students predominated. A positive family history was obtained in 5. Cough, chest pain, dyspnoea and haemoptysis were the main symptoms whereas 15 were acutely ill. Three patients presented with pathognomonic expectoration of laminated membrane and 2 had intra-pleural cyst rupture. The total number of cysts was 99 (61 intact, 50 solitary, and 55 unilateral). The right lung was more frequently involved (n = 64) and right lower lobe was on the top. Cyst size ranged from 3 to 25 cm with a mean of 8.5. The main radiographic appearance was the “full moon against dark sky” visible in 61.6%. Abdominal ultrasound was carried out in 40 patients who revealed 12 hepatic and one splenic HCs. Lung preserving surgery was done in 76 cysts (91.5%) while lobectomy was necessary in 7. Capitonnage was used in 16 cases only (19.2%). Two patients had lung decortication and four had trans-diaphragmatic removal of liver HCs. Few complications developed mostly managed conservatively. Reoperation was necessary in 4 patients (prolonged air leak, n = 2 and bleeding, n = 2). Two patients died (3%). Conclusion: PHC is endemic in Iraq, mainly diagnosed by plain chest radiography, and can be safely managed by lung preserving surgery with minimal morbidity and mortality.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the British Administration's and, later, the Malaysian Government's strategies in fighting the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). The British spent almost 12 years fighting the communist insurgency, and later the Malaysian Government needed another 29 years to bring the Malayan Communist Party to agree to lay down their arms. The Briggs Plan had a significant impact on the suppression of the communist insurgency at the initial stages. However, it is important to understand that the government's long-term strategy, which focused on security and development, is what finally defeated the insurgency movement in Malaysia. This paper focuses on the 41 years of Malaysian experiences and compares them with the situation in Iraq today. Even though the situation in Malaya was comparatively different in terms of the aims of the insurgents, the reasons for the insurgency, and the category of persons involved, one can learn from the dissimilarities between Malaya and Iraq to gain a better understanding of how war against insurgents should be fought.
