This is a statistical study on technical and managerial manpower in the Construction Industry. The information collected, analysed and interpreted in this thesis is based on a large scale sample survey of firms, both general contractors and specialist trade contractors, distributed over all the regions in England and Wales. The thesis includes an analysis establishing the structure of technical and managerial personnel within the industry. This reveals, in turn, how one group of firms, classified by their size by number of operatives and type of trade undertaken, differs from another. Analysis has also been carried out to establish the factors which are likely to affect such manpower structures. Some of the factors included in this thesis are work specialisation, sub-contracting, and size of contract. An assessment of the quality - in terms of academic and professional qualification - of technical and managerial personnel employed in this industry has been attempted and references have also been made to the corresponding position in Manufacturing Industry. Finally, an attempt has been made to measure the effect of technical and managerial manpower and also of qualified manpower on the productivity of a firm.
