4. Goat's milk production and cheese consumption in Senegal

Abstract

This study was carried out to identify the potential of the goat's cheese sector. A survey was carried out on milk production among 191 farmers and on cheese preferences and purchasing criteria among 150 consumers. The results showed that goat's milk is mainly self-consumed in Saint-Louis and Louga and in the South (Kolda and Ziguinchor). In Fatick, Dakar and Thies regions, the milk is used to make cheese. Goats are owned by both men (48%) and women (52%). The Sahelian goat is more prevalent in the Northern, Western and Center regions. In the South, the dwarf goat predominates. As far as cheese consumption is concerned, the results showed that 75% of consumers surveyed prefer imported cheeses, while 25% eat available cheeses with a good presentation or at low prices, regardless of where they come from or the animal of origin. Products with a certain type of certification (proof of sanitary quality) influence purchases (10%), while others (30%) are influenced by the point of sale (supermarkets). Une enquête a été réalisée sur la production de lait auprès de 191 éleveurs et sur la préférence et les critères de choix à l’achat de fromages auprès de 150 consommateurs. Les résultats montrent que le lait de chèvre est principalement auto-consommé à Saint-Louis et Louga et au Sud (Kolda et Ziguinchor). Dans la région de Fatick, Dakar et Thiès, le lait est valorisé en fromage. Les chèvres appartiennent aussi bien à des hommes (48%) qu’à des femmes (52%). La chèvre du Sahel est plus présente dans la zone du Nord, Ouest et Centre. Au Sud, la chèvre naine prédomine. Concernant la consommation de fromages, les résultats montrent que 75% des consommateurs interrogés préfèrent les fromages importés, 25% consomment les fromages disponibles ayant une bonne présentation ou à prix faibles sans se soucier de la provenance ou de l’animal d’origine. Les produits bénéficiant d'un certain type de certification (preuve de qualité sanitaire) influencent les achats (10%), d’autres (30%) sont influencés par les lieux de vente (grandes surfaces). Abstract

The violence of road accidents leads to frequent and particularly complex deaths requiring the intervention of forensic medicine. The objective of this study is to determine, with the help of autopsies, the socio-demographic profile, the exact causes and modes of death of traffic accident victims. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective study based on data collected from court requisitions, autopsy reports and registers of the General Hospital Idrissa Pouye of Grand Yoff in Dakar from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021. Results: The gender distribution of the present study showed a higher proportion of males (74%) compared to females (26%). The distribution of traffic fatalities shows 2 peaks, between the age groups of 15-30 years and 31-45 years. Our study shows that the majority of fatal road traffic accidents occur in rural areas. In our study, we found varied monthly peaks with virtually the same rates in the months of February, May, June, September and October. In the present study, polytraumatic injuries were responsible for 35% of the deaths followed by head injuries at 25%, i.e. a total of 60% of deaths.Lesions with neurological complications (14%), infectious complications (11%), internal bleeding (11%) and external bleeding (4%) were responsible for the deaths. Conclusion: Traffic accidents, with their exponential number of deaths, constitute a real public health problem. The knowledge of the modes of these accidental deaths and fatal injuries, especially in young people, is possible thanks to the contribution of the medicolegal autopsy.

Abstract

L'objectif était d'évaluer les aspects épidémiologiques des violences conjugales, identifier les facteurs de risques et les différents types de violences conjugales, évaluer les conséquences des violences conjugales sur la santé des victimes, afin d'améliorer la prise en charge des victimes et la prévention du phénomène. Il s'est agit d'une étude transversale effectuée de décembre 2012 à janvier 2013 à Dakar. Les données ont été recueillies, après consentement, sur fiche d'enquête anonyme soumise à toute personne volontaire vivant en couple et résidant à Dakar. L'analyse statistique a été effectuée avec le logiciel SPSS 13.0. Le nombre de personnes victimes de violences conjugales était de 60 soit 37,30 % dont 31 femmes (51,70 %) et 29 hommes (48,30 %). Le sex-ratio était de 0,93. Parmi les victimes, 53 étaient scolarisées soit 88,30 %. Le régime matrimonial était de type monogame dans 39 cas (65 %) et polygame dans 21 cas (35 %). La vie en couple durait depuis moins de 11 ans dans 60 % des cas et durait de 11 ans à 20 ans au plus dans 26,6 % des cas. L'étude des types de violences montrait la fréquence des agressions physiques. Les armes utilisées étaient surtout les armes naturelles. Les principaux facteurs de risque de violence conjugale sont les facteurs sociodémographiques, culturels et économiques comme le jeune âge, l'inégalité du genre, les jeunes couples, la précarité, le niveau d'instruction élevé. La prise en charge des victimes et la prévention du phénomène restent insuffisantes dans nos pays.Key words: Violence, conjugale, agression, victimes

Abstract

Accidents with exposure to blood (AEBs) remain a reality in healthcare settings and are, by their frequency, a major concern for health professionals. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of AEBs history, to identify the types, circumstances and mechanisms of occurrence and to describe the practices of health professionals with respect to AEBs. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study over a period of two (02) months (September-October 2018) in two hospitals, the Kara’s teaching hospital and Kara’s regional hospital, both located in the north, 418 kilometers from Lome, economic capital of Togo. The study population was represented by health professionals practicing in the district pediatrics, surgery, gynecology-obstetrics, emergencies and laboratories of the said centers. Were included in the study health professionals presents and available in the above-mentioned services at the time of the survey. Hospital staff not directly involved in patient care (administrative, mortuary staff, vigils, pharmacy salesmen) were excluded from the study. This research was a descriptive-analytical technique using interviews and questionnaires anonymized and adapted in such a way that it meets our objectives. Methods of data analysis were made using the Sphinx V5 software version 5.1.0.2. The Chi-square statistical test was used to compare the proportions with a significance threshold of 5%. The prevalence of AEBs was estimated at 67.6%. The results show that AEBs were frequent among men compared to women (72.7% vs 58.3%), without significant difference. Age, occupational qualification and seniority in the medical profession were significantly associated to AEBs. The most common mechanism of occurrence was the skin break (89.1%). The equipment or sharp objects handled at the time of the accident were a hollow needle (58.8%), and the most incriminated body fluid was blood (71.7%). AEBs are a reality in health care in Togo with a very high prevalence and concern daily all socio-professional categories especially the nurses and the midwives during the care tasks. Exposure is roughly daily, however, the amount of vaccination coverage in these two hospitals is low. In addition, for health care workers to some dangerous actions, such as disposal of used needles, lack of attention to wearing PPE will be accepted in certain circumstances without risk, it is observed.

Abstract

Infanticide is a crime that evokes emotion and misunderstanding in the general population. The overall objective was to assess the current situation regarding the killing of new-born children in Dakar. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study spread over a 12-year period from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2015. The study population was women accused of infanticide incarcerated in the prison and correctional facility of Liberté 6 and who had either been tried or who were awaiting trial during the study period. The 46 cases tried concerned 47 newborns and one mother having killed both her babies. The victims were found especially in the mother's home (28 cases) For all women in our sample, the murder was motivated by personal, social and economic factors. The average age of the mothers was 25.5 years with the youngest being 17 years old and the oldest 41 years old. These detention periods ranged from 2 to 6 years. The average length of pre-trial detention was 3.26 years, The preventive strategies put in place in some countries are proof that prevention against these acts remains possible.
