The development of a satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating convective and stratiform rainfall and its application in studying the diurnal variability of rainfall on a global scale is presented. The Convective-Stratiform Technique (CST), calibrated by coincident, physically retrieved rain rates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR), is applied over the global tropics. The technique makes use of the IR data from the TRMM Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) before application to global geosynchronous satellite data. The calibrated CST technique has the advantages of high spatial resolution (4 km), filtering of nonraining cirrus clouds, and the stratification of the rainfall into its convective and stratiform components, the last being important for the calculation of vertical profiles of latent heating. The diurnal cycle of rainfall, as well as the division between convective and Stratiform rainfall will be presented. The technique is validated using available data sets and compared to other global rainfall products such as Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) IR product, calibrated with TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) data. Results from five years of PR data will show the global-tropical partitioning of convective and stratiform rainfall.

In August 2004, representatives from NOAA, NASA, the USGS, and other government agencies convened in San Juan, Puerto Rim for a workshop to discuss a proposed research project called the Hurricane-Flood-Landslide Continuum (HFLC). The essence of the HFLC is to develop and integrate tools across disciplines to enable the issuance of regional guidance products for floods and landslides associated with major tropical rain systems, with sufficient lead time that local emergency managers can protect vulnerable populations and infrastructure. All three lead agencies are independently developing precipitation-flood-debris flow forecasting technologies, and all have a history of work on natural hazards both domestically and overseas. NOM has the capability to provide tracking and prediction of storm rainfall, trajectory and landfall and is developing flood probability and magnTtude capabilities. The USGS has the capability to evaluate the ambient stability of natural and man-made landforms, to assess landslide susceptibilities for those landforms, and to establish probabilities for initiation of landslides and debris flows. Additionally, the USGS has well-developed operational capacity for real-time monitoring and reporting of streamflow across distributed networks of automated gaging stations (http://water.usgs.gov/waterwatch/). NASA has the capability to provide sophisticated algorithms for satellite remote sensing of precipitation, land use, and in the future, soil moisture. The Workshop sought to initiate discussion among three agencies regarding their specific and highly complimentary capabilities. The fundamental goal of the Workshop was to establish a framework that will leverage the strengths of each agency. Once a prototype system is developed for example, in relatively data-rich Puerto Rim, it could be adapted for use in data-poor, low-infrastructure regions such as the Dominican Republic or Haiti. This paper provides an overview of the Workshop s goals, presentations and recommendations with respect to the development of the HFLC.

Many modeling studies have concluded that widespread deforestation of Amazonia would lead to decreased rainfall. We analyze geosynchronous infrared satellite data with respect to percent cloudiness, and analyze rain estimates from microwave sensors aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite. We conclude that in the dry-season, when the effects of the surface are not overwhelmed by synoptic-scale weather disturbances, shallow cumulus cloudiness, deep convective cloudiness, and rainfall occurrence all are larger over the deforested and non-forested (savanna) regions than over areas of dense jungle. This difference is in response to a local circulation initiated by the differential heating of the region s varying forestation. Analysis of the diurnal cycle of cloudiness reveals a shift in the onset of convection toward afternoon hours in the deforested and towards the morning hours in the savanna regions when compared to the neighboring forested regions. Analysis of 14 years of monthly estimates from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager data revealed that in only in August was there a pattern of higher monthly rainfall amounts over the deforested region.

The low sampling rate of TRMM PR imposes limitations on calibrating IR- based techniques; however, our research shows that PR observations can be applied to improve IR-based techniques significantly by selecting adequate calibration areas and calibration length. This study begins with the hypothesis that heavily deforested regions will experience increased surface heating, leading to local circulations that will ultimately enhance the rainfall, or at least, change the pattern of diurnal evolution of rainfall. This would be an important finding because several modeling studies have concluded that widespread deforestation would lead to decreased rainfall. Towards that end rain estimates from a combined GOES infrared/TRMM microwave technique were analyzed with respect to percent forest cover from Landsat data (courtesy of TRFIC at Michigan State University) and GOES visible channel data over a deforested area in Rondonia (southwest Brazil). Five 1" x 1" areas of varying forest cover were examined during the onset of the wet season in Amazonia (Aug-Sept), when the effects of the surface would not be dominated by large-scale synoptic weather patterns. Preliminary results revealed that: maximum rainfall fell in most deforested area; heavily forested areas received the least rainfall; cumulus cloud development initiated at borders; the amplitude of the diurnal cycle of precipitation was a function of th surface cover. Further work will be presented detailing effects of land surface cover on the GOES infrared-measured surface heating, GOES visible observed cumulus development, thunderstorm initiation based on the location of temperature minima in the infrared data, and estimated rainfall and its diurnal cycle from a combined GOES/TRMM technique. Rainfall estimates derived from non-geosynchronous microwave observations (i.e. Goddard Profiling Algorithm, GPROF) will also be examined.

A satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating rainfall over northern South America is presented. The objectives are to examine the diurnal variability of rainfall and to investigate the relative contributions from the convective and stratiform components. In this study, we apply the Convective-Stratiform Technique (CST) of Adler and Negri (1988). The parameters of the original technique were re-calibrated using coincident rainfall estimates (Olson et W., 2000) derived from the Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and GOES IR (11 micrometer) observations. Local circulations were found to play a major role in modulating the rainfall and its diurnal cycle. These included land/sea circulations (notably along the northeast Brazilian coast and in the Gulf of Panama), mountain/valley circulations (along the Andes Mountains), and circulations associated with the presence of rivers. This last category was examined in detail along the Amazon R. east of Manaus. There we found an early morning rainfall maximum along the river (5 LT at 58W, 3 LT at 56W). Rainfall avoids the river in the afternoon (12 LT and later), notably at 56 W. The width of the river seems to be generating a land/river circulation which enhances early morning rainfall but inhibits afternoon rainfall. Results are compared to ground-based radar data collected during the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere (LBA) experiment in southwest Brazil, to monthly raingages in northeastern Brazil, and to data from the TRMM Precipitation Radar.

An improved version of the Convective/Stratiform Technique (CST) and its application over Brazil are presented. Keeping the major components of traditional CST, we have modified the scheme for classing convective and stratiform rainfall and tested various schemes to eliminate non-raining cirrus clouds. The parameters of the technique are calibrated using Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) multi-sensor observations, including TMI, PR and Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS). This technique takes advantage of the high temporal sampling rate of geosynchronous infrared channel and the better instantaneous rain observation of TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) and PR. Moreover, sparse TMI rain estimates are used to dynamically calibrate the parameters of the technique to improve its performance. The technique is applied to make rainfall estimates on various time scales and to study rainfall statistics such as the distributions of rain intensity and storm duration over a four-month period beginning January 1999. The study period coincides with the TRMM/Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere experiment in Amazonia (LBA) ground validation experiment, and observations from the LBA radar are used to validate the technique. Results show the mean diurnal cycle of precipitation over the LBA area, and are compared to radar data from the Tropical Oceans and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) radar. When the larger geographic region is considered, the analysis of the mean hourly estimates revealed the pronounced effects of rivers, topography and local circulations on the rainfall.

We examine the temporal sampling of tropical regions using observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and Precipitation Radar (PR). We conclude that PR estimates at any one hour, even using three years of data, are inadequate to describe the diurnal cycle of precipitation over regions smaller than 12 degrees, due to high spatial variability in sampling. We show that the optimum period of accumulation is four hours. Diurnal signatures display half as much sampling error when averaged over four hours of local time. A similar pattern of sampling variability is found in the TMI data, despite the TMI's wider swath and increased sampling. These results are verified using an orbital model. The sensitivity of the sampling to satellite altitude is presented, as well as sampling patterns at the new TRMM altitude of 402.5 km.

In this paper we present results from the application of a satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating rainfall over northern South America. Our main objectives are to examine the diurnal variability of rainfall and to investigate the relative contributions from the convective and stratiform components. We apply the technique of Anagnostou et al (1999). In simple functional form, the estimated rain area A(sub rain) may be expressed as: A(sub rain) = f(A(sub mode),T(sub mode)), where T(sub mode) is the mode temperature of a cloud defined by 253 K, and A(sub mode) is the area encompassed by T(sub mode). The technique was trained by a regression between coincident microwave estimates from the Goddard Profiling (GPROF) algorithm (Kummerow et al, 1996) applied to SSM/I data and GOES IR (11 microns) observations. The apportionment of the rainfall into convective and stratiform components is based on the microwave technique described by Anagnostou and Kummerow (1997). The convective area from this technique was regressed against an IR structure parameter (the Convective Index) defined by Anagnostou et al (1999). Finally, rainrates are assigned to the Am.de proportional to (253-temperature), with different rates for the convective and stratiform

In this paper we will present results from the application of a satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating rainfall over northern South America. Our main objectives are to examine the diurnal variability of rainfall and to investigate the relative contributions from the convective and stratiform components. Estimates for Jan-Apr. 1999 will be presented for a large(30 by 50 degree) area that includes the Amazon Basin and the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere (LBA) study area. An analysis of the LBA raingage has begun, and results from the analysis of the gage-derived diurnal cycle will be compared to the satellite estimates. See the attached figure for preliminary results. Also, we hope to perform a comparison of results with LBA case studies of mesoscale convective systems using TOGA and S-bands radars. Future calibration of the IR technique using rain estimates from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is anticipated.

In this study we present and describe a satellite-derived precipitation climatology over northern South America using a passive microwave technique, the Goddard Profiling Algorithm. A period of data slightly longer than 10 years is examined. The climatologies take the form of the mean estimated (adjusted) rainfall for a 10-year (+) period, with sub-divisions by month and meteorological season. For the six-year period 1992-1997, when two satellites were in operation, diurnal variability (to the extent it is discerned by four unequally spaced observations) is presented. We find an alternating pattern of morning and maxima stretching from the northeast (Atlantic coast) clear across the continent to the Pacific. The effects of topography, coastlines and geography (river valleys) on the rainfall patterns are clear. Interannual variability is examined by computing the deviations of yearly and warm season (DJF) rainfall from their respective long-term means. Interannual variability of the diurnal nature of the rainfall is presented, and the strong El Nino event of 1997-1998 is discussed.

The second intercomparison project of the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) examined the estimation of midlatitude, cool-season precipitation. As part of that effort, the authors report here on the results of two microwave techniques, the Goddard scattering algorithm and the physical retrieval algorithm of Kummerow. Results from the estimation of instantaneous rain rate for five overpasses of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) are presented in a case study mode to illustrate both the strong and weak points of each technique. These five cases represent a sampling of the various types of precipitating systems observed. Results for the complete set of 20 swaths chosen by the United Kingdom Meteorological Office (UKMO) are then categorized by scatterplots and statistics of instantaneous radar versus microwave-estimated rain rate, rain no-rain contingency tables, and scatterplots of areal coverage of rainfall. Neither algorithm produced a good statistical correlation with the radar data, yet in general, both did well at determining rainy areas. Two reasons are suggested for the low correlation coefficients between both algorithms and the radar data. Time differences between the SSM/I overpass and the radar observations can occasionally account for some of the differences. The primary reason for the low correlations, however, appears to be the predominance of very light rain in the area of interest during the winter. Both algorithms are in good spatial agreement with the radar when the radar data are restricted to rates above 1 mm/h. When all radar rain rates are included, the radar areal coverage increases by as much as a factor of 10 in some cases. Because the Kummerow algorithm does not handle such low rain rates over land very well, and because the Goddard scattering algorithm uses 1 mm/h as the minimum reliably detectable rain rate, regimes that contain large areas of very light rain present inherent difficulties for these retrieval methods. Therefore, the proliferation of low rain rates observed during the experiment is the main contributor to low correlation coefficients and high root-mean-square differences. Mididentification of cold surface (e.g., snow cover) as precipitation was also a problem in several instances.

A three-year climatology of satellite-estimated rainfall for the warm season for the southwest United States and Mexico has been derived from data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). The microwave data have been stratified by month (June, July, August), year (1988, 1989, 1990), and time of day (morning and evening orbits). A rain algorithm was employed that relates 86-GHz brightness temperatures to rain rate using a coupled cloud-radiative transfer model. Results identify an early evening maximum in rainfall along the western slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental during all three months. A prominent morning rainfall maximum was found off the western Mexican coast near Mazatlan in July and August. Substantial differences between morning and evening estimates were noted. To the extent that three years constitute a climatology, results of interannual variability are presented. Results are compared and contrasted to high-resolution (8 km, hourly) infrared cloud climatologies, which consist of the frequency of occurrence of cloud colder than -38 C and -58 C. This comparison has broad implications for the estimation of rainfall by simple (cloud threshold) techniques. By sampling the infrared data to approximate the time and space resolution of the microwave, we produce ratios (or adjustment factors) by which we can adjust the infrared rain estimation schemes. This produces a combined microwave/infrared rain algorithm for monthly rainfall. Using a limited set of raingage data as ground truth, an improvement (lower bias and root-mean-square error) was demonstrated by this combined technique when compared to either method alone. The diurnal variability of convection during July 1990 was examined using hourly rain estimates from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) precipitation index and the convective stratiform technique, revealing a maximum in estimated rainfall from 1800 to 2100 local time. It is in this time period when the SSM/I evening orbit occurs. A high-resolution topographic database was available to aid in interpreting the influence of topography on the rainfall patterns.

Passive microwave data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) were used to estimate the amount of rainfall in the June-August season for the regions of the southwest U.S. and Mexico, and the results are compared to rain-gauge observations and to IR climatologies of Maddox et al. (1992), using both the hourly IR data and IR data sampled at the time of the overpass of the SSM/I. A comparison of the microwave climatology with monthly rainfall measured by the climatological gage network over several states of western Mexico resulted in a 0.63 correlation and a large (482 mm) bias, due to sampling and the incongruity of rain gages and satellite estimates. A comparison between the IR and microwave data showed that the IR tended toward higher percentages along the coast compared to the microwave.

Initial results are presented from a simple technique that has been developed to investigate the utility of satellite rain estimation over the intermountain west of the United States during the summer season. Gage information is relatively sparse over this region, and convective rainfall is strongly modulated by orographic influences; the semiarid character of the region often results in substantial evaporation of precipitation beneath high cloud bases. The rain estimation technique described here obtains results that are generally comparable with the Adler/Negri CST technique.

Full-resolution GOES data archived over North America at hourly time intervals are used to examine the seasonal climatology of deep convective cloudiness for two warm seasons. The analyses discussed here concern convective activity across subtropical latitudes from east of Florida to westward of Baja California. It is demonstrated that high-resolution GOES data can be processed on long-time scales to elucidate aspects of regional convective activity and its monthly, seasonal, and interannual variability. The results can be directly compared with corresponding analyses of mean tropospheric features to identify key forcing mechanisms for regional convection.

The paper presents results of a satellite algorithm intercomparison of monthly precipitation, which was organized by the World Climate Research Program's Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP). Special attention is given to the techniques used in the projects and the type of data provided in the study (mainly by Japan's GMS visible and IR sensors and the USA's Special Sensor Microwave/Imager). The results of rainfall estimates obtained by Negri et al. (1994) and Adler and Negri (1988) techniques are compared with estimates made with the threshold technique of Arkin (1979, 1983). Results obtained by various techniques are presented for both the instantaneous estimates and for total rain accumulations over an area including Japan for a 24-hr period on June 22, 1989.

The Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) 3 is the version of the AOIPS software as of April 1989. The AOIPS software was developed jointly by the Goddard Space Flight Center and General Sciences Corporation. A detailed description of very AOIPS program is presented. It is intended to serve as a reference for such items as program functionality, program operational instructions, and input/output variable descriptions. Program descriptions are derived from the on-line help information. Each program description is divided into two sections. The functional description section describes the purpose of the program and contains any pertinent operational information. The program description sections lists the program variables as they appear on-line, and describes them in detail.

The statistics of tropical rain system structure are studied, focusing on the division between convective and stratiform rainfall over the GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment B-scale array. The satellite IR convective/stratiform technique of Adler and Negri (1988) is used to produce hourly estimates for two day of the GATE. The estimates are verified against the radar data. The results are compared with the results of Houze and Rappaport (1984) and Cheng and Houze (1979). The possible application of the results for estimating the vertical profile of latent heating is discussed.

Satellite microwave observations of convective rain systems are simulated using a three-dimensional cloud model and a microwave radiative-transfer model. The simulated data sets are then used as a basis to derive rain estimation algorithms which are tested on actual satellite data. A tropical simulation is discussed, and the algorithms are applied to SSM/I data.

The effect of adding visible channel (VIS) data to the IR data in satellite rain estimation schemes was investigated by comparing the abilities of satellite threshold schemes based on VIS, IR channel, or bispectral (VIS/IR) data to estimate convective precipitation. Using the methodology of Bellon and Austin (1986), empirical relationships between the satellite and radar data were determined for two areas: the Florida Area Cumulus Experiment (FACE) area and a 25-km area on a side centered on 26 N, 81 W, which was inclusive of the FACE area but exclusive of points within 50 km or greater than 170 km of the Miami WSR-57 radar. The results did not demonstrate an unequivocal effect of VIS data. The normalized rms error data for the three estimation schemes used in a four-day experiment are presented.

Radar-observed rainrates and rain areas obtained for the Hurricanes Frederic (1979), Alicia (1983), and Diana (1984) were used in conjunction with GOES IR data to examine the validity of three satellite IR rain estimation techniques: the Arkin (1983) method, the Negri-Adler-Wetzel (1984) technique, and the convective-stratiform technique of Adler and Negri (1987). The Alicia hurricane was also monitored using the subjective manual technique of Spayd and Scofield (1984). It is shown that the success of IR techniques in identifying areas of rainfall depends on the hurricane feature being addressed. Thus, the three objective IR techniques were unable to identify the locations of radar-observed eyewall and inner band precipitation areas because of strong vertical wind shear in the eyewall and the lack of the vertical extent of stratiform precipitation beneath the central dense overcast.

This study explores the relationships between satellite-viewed cloudy grid cells and the variability of the precipitation contained therein, together with the relationships between the satellite-IR clouds and rainfall and the IR-thresholded visible clouds and rainfall. In the grid cell approach, IR, visible, and radar data for five days of the Florida Area Cumulus Experiment were examined using a 32-km grid and 30-min interval; the results of this experiment indicated that useful, accurate rainfall estimates beyond rain/no rain discrimination are unlikely. In the cloud definition approach, it was found that the cloud IR area was highly correlated with the rain area and with the volume rain rate across the entire spectrum of cloud sizes. It was poorly correlated with mean cloud rain rate.

The relation between cloudiness and rainfall is analyzed. The precipitation characteristics of cloudy cell grids obtained by the visible and IR techniques and the effects of the two techniques on the precipitation prediction are investigated. The variability of the rainfall rate is examined in terms of temperature, cloud cover, visible count, and the convective cycle.
