Abstract

The National checklists of Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) and Wild Harvested Plants (WHP) are the basic tools for the development of in situ and ex situ conservation strategies of plant genetic resources. Here we discuss the methodologies and the prioritization process we previously used in the preparation of the prioritized checklist of CWR and WHP for Italy. The starting point were the most up-to-date Italian checklists of native and alien flora with their updates used as a nomenclatural and distributive source of data. Sardinia and Sicily were kept separate from peninsular Italy to perform detailed analyses focused on the taxa of the two major islands. The origin, the endemic status, cultivation, economic importance, uses, gene pool or taxon group, and the Red List status information were added. The WHP status was attributed to all the taxa with known direct uses. A qualitative approach was adopted in the prioritization process, the main criteria used were: 1) the inclusion of wild relative taxa of crops listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and/or by the Italian Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) for cultivated areas and yield in the last 5 years; 2) the threatened taxa occurring in national or global Red lists; 3) the endemism. This prioritization process generated 102 taxa as most in need of specific protection and /or monitoring measures, 57 taxa requiring monitoring because of their restricted distribution although not requiring specific protection measures and 735 taxa not requiring any specific protection. However, different prioritization processes could have been applied to the Italian checklists yielding different results. Here we discuss the matter.

Abstract

The Italian seed bank network (RIBES) aims to improve the quality and safety of the germplasm reserves of native plant species in Italy to ensure the long-term conservation of endangered and/or endemic flora. The strategy includes traditional methods to secure seed conservation. A comprehensive priority list for seed collection is being defined, it was prepared by crossing data of various checklists (red lists, endemics) and will soon be cross-referenced with an updated list of accessions of the whole network. A safety-backup program of duplicates will quickly be implemented to secure the conservation of the most threatened species in at least two seed banks of the network. On the other hand, the RIBES strategy also includes research by applying modern techniques. In collaboration with the Millennium Seed Bank, research on the storage behaviour of seeds and spores through thermal analysis is ongoing to inform conservation. Using the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), we could evaluate seed lipid properties such as glass transition temperature, melting, crystallization, oxidation behaviour, and thermal stability. Finally, RIBES participates as a co-funder in the LIFE Nature project SEEDFORCE, coordinating 11 seed banks of the network for collecting seeds/spores of 29 threatened species of EU interest.

Abstract

Process modeling has become a fundamental tool to guide experimental work. Unfortunately, process models based on first principles can be expensive to develop and evaluate, and hard to use, particularly when convergence issues arise. This work proves that Bayesian symbolic learning can be applied to derive simple closed-form expressions from rigorous process simulations, streamlining the process modeling task and making process models more accessible to experimental groups. Compared to conventional surrogate models, our approach provides analytical expressions that are easier to communicate and manipulate algebraically to get insights into the process. We apply this method to synthetic data obtained from two basic CO2 capture processes simulated in Aspen HYSYS, identifying accurate simplified interpretable equations for key variables dictating the process economic and environmental performance. We then use these expressions to analyze the process variables' elasticities and benchmark an emerging CO2 capture process against the business as usual technology.

Abstract

Data of 620 crop wild relatives of species of food and fodder interest listed in the Annex I of the FAO Treaty (FAO, 2001) were collected within the census carried out by ISPRA, the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, in 2014-2015 in order to quantify the extent of CWR representation in the Italian ex situ collections. According to such census, the RIBES network preserve 37% of the Italian CWRs listed in the FAO Treaty: in 14 out of 16 seed-banks are preserved 6,029 accessions of 229 CWR taxa, belonging to 11 families and 57 genera.

Innovazione e città sono parole del momento. Oltre la metà della popolazione mondiale vive nelle aree urbane e il numero è in crescita. Ciò significa che le scelte operate in questi contesti avranno sempre più impatto a livello globale. Insieme alle responsabilità politiche, nelle aree urbane si addensano le sfide della convivenza, dell’accoglienza, dello sviluppo sostenibile; ma qui si concentrano anche le risorse intellettive, economiche, tecnologiche, culturali e sociali. Le città diventano così degli straordinari laboratori del cambiamento e dell’innovazione. Milano sembra aver preso la sua strada, optando per un modello di innovazione sociale inclusiva. Il Rapporto Ambrosianeum 2017 mette alla prova questa dichiarazione di intenti scandagliando cosa sta accadendo in alcuni campi privilegiati: il lavoro e le imprese 4.0, le università e la ricerca, il welfare e le nuove pratiche di condivisione, mostrando che l’innovazione può essere alla portata di tutti. Abstract

A coincident business cycle indicator for the Milan area is built on the basis of a monthly industrial survey carried out by Assolombarda, the largest territorial entrepreneurial association in Italy. The indicator is extracted from three time series concerning the production level and the domestic and foreign order book as declared by some 250 Assolombarda associates. This indicator is potentially very valuable in itself, being the Milan area one of the most dynamic economic systems in Italy and Europe, but it becomes much more interesting when compared to the Italian business cycle as extracted from the Italian industrial production index. Indeed, notwithstanding the deep differences in the nature of the data, the indicator for Milan has an extremely high coherence with the Italian cycle and the former leads the latter by approximately 4-6 months. Furthermore there is a direct relation between the amplitude of the cycle and the leading time of the Milan indicator. The ability of the Milan indicator to predict in real time the turning points of the Italian business cycle is tested through a simple forecasting exercise.

Abstract

This article documents the addition of 153 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Brassica oleracea, Brycon amazonicus, Dimorphandra wilsonii, Eupallasella percnurus, Helleborus foetidus, Ipomoea purpurea, Phrynops geoffroanus, Prochilodus argenteus, Pyura sp., Sylvia atricapilla, Teratosphaeria suttonii, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Trypanosoma brucei. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Dimorphandra coccicinea, Dimorphandra cuprea, Dimorphandra gardneriana, Dimorphandra jorgei, Dimorphandra macrostachya, Dimorphandra mollis, Dimorphandra parviflora and Dimorphandra pennigera. © 2013 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
