The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. Access to knowledge of the point spread function (PSF) of adaptive optics(AO)-assisted observations is still a major limitation when processing AO data. This limitation is particularly important when image analysis requires the use of deconvolution methods. As the PSF is a complex and time-varying function, reference PSFs acquired on calibration stars before or after the scientific observation can be too different from the actual PSF of the observation to be used for deconvolution, and lead to artefacts in the final image. We improved the existing PSF-estimation method based on the so-called marginal approach by enhancing the object prior in order to make it more robust and suitable for observations of resolved extended objects. Our process is based on a two-step blind deconvolution approach from the literature. The first step consists of PSF estimation from the science image. For this, we made use of an analytical PSF model, whose parameters are estimated based on a marginal algorithm. This PSF was then used for deconvolution. In this study, we first investigated the requirements in terms of PSF parameter knowledge to obtain an accurate and yet resilient deconvolution process using simulations. We show that current marginal algorithms do not provide the required level of accuracy, especially in the presence of small objects. Therefore, we modified the marginal algorithm by providing a new model for object description, leading to an improved estimation of the required PSF parameters. Our method fulfills the deconvolution requirement with realistic system configurations and different classes of Solar System objects in simulations. Characterizing the PSF of adaptive optics instruments is of paramount importance both for instrument design and observation planning/optimization. Simulation software, such as PASSATA, have been successfully utilized for PSF characterization in instrument design, which make use of standardized atmospheric turbulence profiles to produce PSFs that represent the typical instrument performance. In this contribution we study the feasibility of using such tool for nowcast application (present-time forecast), such as the characterization of an on-sky measured PSF in real observations. Specifically we will analyze the performance of the simulation software in characterizing the real-time PSF of two different state-of-the-art SCAO adaptive optics instruments: SOUL at the LBT, and SAXO at the VLT. The study will make use of on-sky measurements of the atmospheric turbulence and compare the results of the simulations to the measured PSF figures of merit (namely the FHWM and the Strehl Ratio) retrieved from the instrument telemetry in real observations. Our main goal in this phase is to quantify the level of uncertainly of the AO simulations in reproducing real on-sky observed PSFs with an end-to-end code (PASSATA). In a successive phase we intend to use a faster analytical code (TIPTOP). This work is part of a wider study which aims to use simulation tools joint to atmospheric turbulence forecasts performed nightly to forecast in advance the PSF and support science operations of ground-based telescopes facilities. The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is an integral field spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope Unit Telescope 4, capable of laser guide star assisted and tomographic adaptive optics using the GALACSI module. Its observing capabilities include a wide field (1 square arcmin), ground layer AO mode (WFM-AO) and a narrow field (7.5"x7.5"), laser tomography AO mode (NFM-AO). The latter has had several upgrades in the 4 years since commissioning, including an optimisation of the control matrices for the AO system and a new sub-electron noise detector for its infra-red low order wavefront sensor. We set out to quantify the NFM-AO system performance by analysing $\sim$230 spectrophotometric standard star observations taken over the last 3 years. To this end we expand upon previous work, designed to facilitate analysis of the WFM-AO system performance. We briefly describe the framework that will provide a user friendly, semi-automated way for system performance monitoring during science operations. We provide the results of our performance analysis, chiefly through the measured Strehl ratio and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the core of the point spread function (PSF) using two PSF models, and correlations with atmospheric conditions. These results will feed into a range of applications, including providing a more accurate prediction of the system performance as implemented in the exposure time calculator, and the associated optimization of the scientific output for a given set of limiting atmospheric conditions., Comment: SPIE proceedings (2022), Observatory Operations: Strategies, Processes, and Systems IX

The future large adaptive telescopes will trigger new constraints for the calibration of Adaptive Optics (AO) systems equipped with pre-focal Deformable Mirrors (DM). The image of the DM actuators grid as seen by the Wave-Front Sensor (WFS) may evolve during the operations due to the flexures of the opto-mechanical components present in the optical path. The latter will result in degraded AO performance that will impact the scientific operation. To overcome this challenge, it will be necessary to regularly monitor and compensate for these DM/WFS mis-registrations either by physically re-aligning some optical components or by updating the control matrix of the system. In this paper, we present a new strategy to track mis-registrations using a pseudo-synthetic model of the AO system. The method is based on an invasive approach where signals are acquired on-sky, before or during the scientific operations, and fed to the model to extract the mis-registration parameters. We introduce a method to compute the most sensitive modes to these mis-registrations that allows to reduce the number of degrees of freedom required by the algorithm and minimize the impact on the scientific performance. We demonstrate that, using only a few of these well selected signals, the method provides a very good accuracy on the parameters estimation, well under the targeted accuracy, and has a negligible impact on the scientific path. In addition, the method appears to be very robust to varying operating conditions of noise and atmospheric turbulence and performs equally for both Pyramid and Shack-Hartmann WFS.

The optimization and scheduling of scientific observations done with instrumentation supported by adaptive optics could greatly benefit from the forecast of PSF figures of merit (FWHM, Strehl Ratio, Encircle Energy and contrast), that depend on the AO instrument, the scientific target and turbulence conditions during the observing night. In this contribution we explore the the possibility to forecast a few among the most useful PSF figures of merit (SR and FWHM). To achieve this goal, we use the optical turbulence forecasted by the mesoscale atmospheric model Astro-Meso-NH on a short timescale as an input for PSF simulation software developed and tailored for specific AO instruments. A preliminary validation will be performed by comparing the results with on-sky measured PSF figures of merit obtained on specific targets using the SCAO systems SOUL (FLAO upgrade) feeding the camera LUCI at LBT and SAXO, the extreme SCAO system feeding the high resolution SPHERE instrument at VLT. This study will pave the way to the implementation of an operational forecasts of such a figure of merits on the base of existing operational forecast system of the atmosphere (turbulence and atmospheric parameters). The performance of tomographic adaptive optics systems is intrinsically linked to the vertical profile of optical turbulence. Firstly, a sufficient number of discrete turbulent layers must be reconstructed to model the true continuous turbulence profile. Secondly over the course of an observation, the profile as seen by the telescope changes and the tomographic reconstructor must be updated. These changes can be due to the unpredictable evolution of turbulent layers on meteorological timescales as short as minutes. Here we investigate the effect of changing atmospheric conditions on the quality of tomographic reconstruction by coupling fast analytical adaptive optics simulation to a large database of 10 691 high resolution turbulence profiles measured over two years by the Stereo-SCIDAR instrument at ESO Paranal, Chile. This work represents the first investigation of these effects with a large, statistically significant sample of turbulence profiles. The statistical nature of the study allows us to assess not only the degradation and variability in tomographic error with a set of system parameters (e.g. number of layers, temporal update period) but also the required parameters to meet some error threshold. In the most challenging conditions where the profile is rapidly changing, these parameters must be far more tightly constrained in order to meet this threshold. By providing estimates of these constraints for a wide range of system geometries as well as the impact of different temporal optimisation strategies we may assist the designers of tomographic AO for the ELT to dimension their systems., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. Point spread function (PSF) reconstruction (PSF-R) is a well established technique to determine reliably and accurately the PSF from Adaptive Optics (AO) control loop data. We have successfully applied this technique to improve the precision on photometry and astrometry to observation of NGC6121 obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL as it will be presented in a forthcoming letter. Firstly, we present the methodology we followed to reconstruct the PSF combining pupil-plane and focal-plane measurements using using our PSF-R method PRIME (Beltramo-Martin et al. 2019), with upgrade of both the model and best-fitting steps compared to previous papers. Secondly, we highlight that PRIME allows to maintain the PSF fitting residual below 0.2% over 2 hours of observation and using only 30 s of AO telemetry, which may have important consequences for telemetry storage for PSF-R purpose on future 30-40 m class telescopes. Finally, we deploy PRIME in a more realistic regime using faint stars so as to identify the precision needed on the initial guess parameters to ensure the convergence towards the optimal solution.

For extremely large telescopes, adaptive optics will be required to correct the Earth's turbulent atmosphere. The performance of tomographic adaptive optics is strongly dependent on the vertical distribution (profile) of this turbulence. An important way in which this manifests is the tomographic error, arising from imperfect measurement and reconstruction of the turbulent phase at altitude. Conventionally, a small number of reference profiles are used to obtain this error in simulation however these profiles are not constructed to be representative in terms of tomographic error. It is therefore unknown whether these simulations are providing realistic performance estimates. Here, we employ analytical adaptive optics simulation that drastically reduces computation times to compute tomographic error for 10 691 measurements of the turbulence profile gathered by the Stereo-SCIDAR instrument at ESO Paranal. We assess for the first time the impact of the profile on tomographic error in a statistical manner. We find, in agreement with previous work, that the tomographic error is most directly linked with the distribution of turbulence into discrete, stratified layers. Reference profiles are found to provide mostly higher tomographic error than expected, which we attribute to the fact that these profiles are primarily composed of averages of many measurements resulting in unrealistic, continuous distributions of turbulence. We propose that a representative profile should be defined with respect to a particular system, and that as such simulations with a large statistical sample of profiles must be an important step in the design process., Comment: Accepted MNRAS June 2019

In order to enhance accuracy of astrophysical estimates obtained on Adaptive-optics (AO) images, such as photometry and astrometry, we investigate a new concept to constrain the Point Spread Function (PSF) model called PSF Reconstruction and Identification for Multi-sources characterization Enhancement (PRIME), that handles jointly the science image and the AO control loop data. We present in this paper the concept of PRIME and validate it on Keck II telescope NIRC2 images. We show that by calibrating the PSF model over the scientific image, PSF reconstruction achieves 1\% and 3 mas of accuracy on respectively the Strehl-ratio and the PSF full width at half maximum. We show on NIRC2 binary images that PRIME is sufficiently robust to noise to retain photometry and astrometry precision below 0.005 mag and 100$\mu$as on a $m_H=$ 14 mag object. Finally, we also validate that PRIME performs a PSF calibration on the triple system Gl569BAB which provides a separation of 66.73$\pm 1.02$ and a differential photometry of 0.538$\pm 0.048$, compared to the reference values obtained with the extracted PSF which are 66.76 mas $\pm$ 0.94 and 0.532 mag $\pm$ 0.041.

Context. Over the past decades, several interplanetary missions have studied small bodies in situ, leading to major advances in our understanding of their geological and geophysical properties. These missions, however, have had a limited number of targets. Among them, the NASA Dawn mission has characterised in detail the topography and albedo variegation across the surface of asteroid (4) Vesta down to a spatial resolution of approximately 20 m/pixel scale. Aims. Here our aim was to determine how much topographic and albedo information can be retrieved from the ground with VLT/SPHERE in the case of Vesta, having a former space mission (Dawn) providing us with the ground truth that can be used as a benchmark. Methods. We observed Vesta with VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL as part of our ESO large programme (ID 199.C-0074) at six different epochs, and deconvolved the collected images with a parametric point spread function (PSF). We then compared our images with synthetic views of Vesta generated from the 3D shape model of the Dawn mission, on which we projected Vesta's albedo information. Results. We show that the deconvolution of the VLT/SPHERE images with a parametric PSF allows the retrieval of the main topographic and albedo features present across the surface of Vesta down to a spatial resolution of approximately 20-30 km. Contour extraction shows an accuracy of approximately 1 pixel (3.6 mas). The present study provides the very first quantitative estimate of the accuracy of ground-based adaptive-optics imaging observations of asteroid surfaces. Conclusions. In the case of Vesta, the upcoming generation of 30-40m telescopes (ELT, TMT, GMT) should in principle be able to resolve all of the main features present across its surface, including the troughs and the north-south crater dichotomy, provided that they operate at the diffraction limit.

The European Extremely Large Telescope will see first lights by the end of 2024. With a diameter of almost 40 meters, it will be the biggest optical telescope ever built from the ground. The ELT will open a brand new window in a sensitivity / spatial angular resolution parameter space. To take the full benefit of the scientific potential of this giant, all the instruments will be equipped with Adaptive Optics (AO), providing the sharpest images. This paper provides a quick overview of the AO capabilities of the future instruments to be deployed at the ELT, highlight some of the expected performance and describe a couple of technical challenges that are still to tackle for an optimal scientific use. Ground-based astronomy is severely limited by the atmospheric turbulence, resulting in a large Point-Spread-Function (PSF) and poor imaging resolution. Even imaging with Adaptive Optics (AO) cannot completely correct the aberrated wavefront, and a residual turbulence still corrupts the observation. Thus the consequences of the turbulence on the PSF is of first interest when building any ground-based telescope. The Power Spectral Density (PSD) of a spatially stationary turbulent phase carries all the information needed for describing the long-exposure PSF. We then develop an analytical description of the long-exposure PSF as a series expansion of the aberrated phase PSD. Our description of the PSF given the PSD of the phase is a simple theoretical way to describe the impact of turbulence on the PSF. We also show accordance with previous papers when restricting our model to its first expansion order. Finally we derive applications of our formula to some particular cases, such as Kolmogorov or von-K\'arm\'an models, or the AO correction impact on the PSF.

Several telescopes include large Deformable Mirrors (DM) located directly inside the telescope. These adaptive telescopes trigger new constraints for the calibration of the Adaptive Optics (AO) systems as they usually offer no access to an artificial calibration source for the interaction matrix measurement. Moreover, the optical propagation between the DM and the Wave-Front Sensor (WFS) may evolve during the operation, resulting in mis-registrations that highly affect the AO performance and thus the scientific observation. They have to be measured and compensated, for instance by updating the calibration. A new strategy consists of estimating the mis-registrations and injecting them into synthetic models to generate noise-free interaction matrices. This pseudo-synthetic approach is the baseline for the Adaptive Optics Facility working with a Shack-Hartmann WFS and seems particularly suited for the future Extremely Large Telescope as the calibration will have to be regularly updated, for a large numbers of actuators. In this paper, the feasibility of a pseudo synthetic calibration with Pyramid WFS at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is investigated. A synthetic model of the LBT AO systems is developed, and the procedure to adjust the mis-registrations parameters is introduced, extracting them from an experimental interaction matrix. We successfully tested an interaction matrix generated from the model on the real system in high-order AO mode. We recorded a slightly better performance with respect to the experimental one. This work demonstrates that a high accuracy calibration can be obtained using the pseudo synthetic approach with pyramid WFS.

Knowledge of the atmospheric turbulence in the telescope line-of-sight is crucial for wide-field observations assisted by adaptive optics (AO), for which the Point Spread Function (PSF) becomes strongly elongated due to the anisoplanatism effect. This one must be modelled accurately to extrapolate the PSF anywhere across the Field of view (FOV) and improve the science exploitation. However, anisoplanatism is a function of the Cn2(h) profile, that is not directly accessible from single conjugate AO telemetry. One may rely on external profilers, but recent studies have highlighted more than 10% of discrepancies with AO internal measurements, while we aim better than 1% of accuracy for PSF modelling. To tackle this existing limitation, we present the Focal plane profiling (FPP), as a $C_n^2(h)$ profiling method that relies on post-AO focal plane images. We demonstrate such an approach complies with a 1%-level of accuracy on the $C_n^2(h)$ estimation and establish how this accuracy varies regarding the calibration stars magnitudes and positions in the field. We highlight that photometry and astrometry errors due to PSF mis-modelling reaches respectively 1% and 50{\mu}as using FPP on a Keck baseline, with a preliminary calibration using a star of magnitude H=14 at 20". We also validate this concept using Canadas NRC-Herzberg HENOS testbed images in comparing FPP retrieval with alternative $C_n^2(h)$ measurements on HeNOS. The FPP approach allows to profile the $C_n^2(h)$ using the SCAO systems and improve significantly the PSF characterisation. Such a methodology is also ELT-size compliant and will be extrapolated to tomographic systems in a near future.

HARMONI is a visible and NIR integral field spectrograph, providing the E-ELT's core spectroscopic capability at first light. HARMONI will work at the diffraction limit of the E-ELT, thanks to a Classical and a Laser Tomographic AO system. In this paper, we present the system choices that have been made for these SCAO and LTAO modules. In particular, we describe the strategy developed for the different Wave-Front Sensors: pyramid for SCAO, the LGSWFS concept, the NGSWFS path, and the truth sensor capabilities. Adaptive optics (AO) restore the angular resolution of ground-based telescopes, but at the cost of delivering a time- and space-varying point spread function (PSF) with a complex shape. PSF knowledge is crucial for breaking existing limits on the measured accuracy of photometry and astrometry in science observations. In this paper, we concentrate our analyses on anisoplanatism signature only onto PSF: for large-field observations (20") with single- conjugated AO, PSFs are strongly elongated due to anisoplanatism that manifests itself as three different terms for Laser-guide star (LGS) systems: angular, focal and tilt. We propose a generalized model that relies on a point-wise decomposition of the phase and encompasses the non-stationarity of LGS systems. We demonstrate it is more accurate and less computationally demanding than existing models: it agrees with end-to-end physical-optics simulations to within 0.1% of PSF measurables, such as Strehl-ratio, FWHM and fraction of variance unexplained.Secondly, we study off-axis PSF modelling is with respect to $C_n^2(h)$ profile (heights and fractional weights). For 10m class telescope, PSF morphology is estimated at 1% level as long as we model the atmosphere with at least 7 layers whose heights and weights are known respectively with 200m and 10% precision. As a verification test we used the Canada's NRC-Herzberg HeNOS testbed data, featuring four lasers. We highlight capability of retrieving off-axis PSF characteristics within 10% of fraction of variance unexplained, which complies with the expected range from the sensitivity analysis. Our new off-axis PSF modelling method lays the ground-work for testing on-sky in the near future.

Wide Field Adaptive Optics (WFAO) systems are among the most sophisticated AO systems available today on large telescopes. The knowledge of the vertical spatio-temporal distribution of the wind speed (WS) and direction (WD) are fundamental to optimize the performance of such systems. Previous studies already proved that the Gemini Multi-Conjugated AO system (GeMS) is able to retrieve measurements of the WS and WD stratification using the SLODAR technique and to store measurements in the telemetry data. In order to assess the reliability of these estimates and of the SLODAR technique applied to such a kind of complex AO systems, in this study we compared WS and WD retrieved from GeMS with those obtained with the atmospherical model Meso-Nh on a rich statistical sample of nights. It has been previously proved that, the latter technique, provided an excellent agreement with a large sample of radiosoundings both, in statistical terms and on individual flights. It can be considered, therefore, as an independent reference. The excellent agreement between GeMS measurements and the model that we find in this study, proves the robustness of the SLODAR approach. To by-pass the complex procedures necessary to achieve automatic measurements of the wind with GeMS, we propose a simple automatic method to monitor nightly WS and WD using the Meso-Nh model estimates. Such a method can be applied to whatever present or new generation facilities supported by WFAO systems. Whether is ground-based or space-based, any optical instrument suffers from some amount of optical geometric distortion. Recently, the diffraction-limited image quality afforded by space-based telescopes and by Adaptive Optics (AO) corrected instruments on ground based-telescope, have increased the relative importance of the error terms induced by optical distortions. In particular, variable distortions present in Multi-Conjugated Adaptive Optics (MCAO) data are limiting the astrometry and photometry accuracy of such high resolution instruments. From there, the ability to deal with those phenomenon had become a critical issue for high-precision studies. We present in this paper an optimal method of distortion correction for high angular resolution images. Based on a prior-knowledge of the static distortion the method aims to correct the dynamical distortions specifically for each observation set and each frame. The method follows an inverse problem approach based on the work done by Gratadour et al. 2005 on image re-centering, and we aim to generalized it to any kind of distortion mode. The complete formalism of a Weighted Least Square minimization, as well as a detailed characterization of the error budget are presented. In particular we study the influence of different parameters such as the number of frames and the density of the field (sparse or crowed images), of the noise level, and of the aliasing effect. Finally, we show the first application of the method on real observations collected with the Gemini MCAO instrument, GeMS/GSAOI. Canary is the Multi-Object Adaptive Optics (MOAO) pathfinder for the future MOAO-assisted Integral-Field Units (IFU) proposed for Extremely Large Telescopes (ELT). The MOAO concept relies on tomographically reconstructing the turbulence using multiple measurements along different lines of sight. Tomography requires the knowledge of the statistical turbulence parameters, commonly recovered from the system telemetry using a dedicated profiling technique. For demonstration purposes with the MOAO pathfinder Canary , this identification is performed thanks to the Learn & Apply (L&A) algorithm, that consists in model- fitting the covariance matrix of WFS measurements dependent on relevant parameters: $C_n^2(h)$ profile, outer scale profile and system mis-registration. We explore an upgrade of this algorithm, the Learn 3 Steps (L3S) approach, that allows one to dissociate the identification of the altitude layers from the ground in order to mitigate the lack of convergence of the required empirical covariance matrices therefore reducing the required length of data time-series for reaching a given accuracy. For nominal observation conditions, the L3S can reach the same level of tomographic error in using five times less data frames than the L&A approach. The L3S technique has been applied over a large amount of Canary data to characterize the turbu- lence above the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). These data have been acquired the 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th September 2013 and we find 0.67"/8.9m/3.07m/s of total seeing/outer scale/wind-speed, with 0.552"/9.2m/2.89m/s below 1.5 km and 0.263"/10.3m/5.22m/s between 1.5 and 20 km. We have also de- termined the high altitude layers above 20 km, missed by the tomographic reconstruction on Canary , have a median seeing of 0.187" and have occurred 16% of observation time.

In preparation of future Multi-Object Spectrographs (MOS) whose one of the major role is to provide an extensive statistical studies of high redshifted galaxies surveyed, the demonstrator Canary has been designed to tackle technical challenges related to open-loop Adaptive-Optics (AO) control with jointed Natural Guide Star (NGS) and Laser Guide Star (LGS) tomography. We have developed a Point Spread Function (PSF)-Reconstruction algorithm dedicated to MOAO systems using system telemetry to estimate the PSF potentially anywhere in the observed field, a prerequisite to post- process AO-corrected observations in Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS). In this paper we show how to handle off-axis data to estimate the PSF using atmospheric tomography and compare it to a classical approach that uses on-axis residual phase from a truth sensor observing a natural bright source. We have reconstructed over 450 on-sky Canary PSFs and we get bias/1-${\sigma}$ standard-deviation (std) of 1.3/4.8 on the H-band Strehl ratio (SR) with 92.3% of correlation between reconstructed and sky SR. On the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), we get respectively 2.94 mas, 19.9 mas and 88.3% for the bias, std and correlation. The reference method achieves 0.4/3.5/95% on the SR and 2.71 mas/14.9 mas/92.5% on the FWHM for the bias/std/correlation.

Wide Field Adaptive Optics (WFAO) systems represent the more sophisticated AO systems available today at large telescopes. A critical aspect for these WFAO systems in order to deliver an optimised performance is the knowledge of the vertical spatiotemporal distribution of the CN2 and the wind speed. Previous studies (Cortes et al., 2012) already proved the ability of GeMS (the Gemini Multi-Conjugated AO system) in retrieving CN2 and wind vertical stratification using the telemetry data. To assess the reliability of the GeMS wind speed estimates a preliminary study (Neichel et al., 2014) compared wind speed retrieved from GeMS with that obtained with the atmospherical model Meso-Nh on a small sample of nights providing promising results. The latter technique is very reliable for the wind speed vertical stratification. The model outputs gave, indeed, an excellent agreement with a large sample of radiosoundings (~ 50) both in statistical terms and on individual flights (Masciadri et al., 2013). Such a tool can therefore be used as a valuable reference in this exercise of cross calibrating GeMS on-sky wind estimates with model predictions. In this contribution we achieved a two-fold results: (1) we extended analysis on a much richer statistical sample (~ 43 nights), we confirmed the preliminary results and we found an even better correlation between GeMS observations and the atmospherical model with basically no cases of not-negligible uncertainties; (2) we evaluate the possibility to use, as an input for GeMS, the Meso-Nh estimates of the wind speed stratification in an operational configuration. Under this configuration these estimates can be provided many hours in advanced with respect to the observations and with a very high temporal frequency (order of 2 minutes or less)., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Proc. The advent of Wide Field Adaptive Optics (WFAO) systems marks the beginning of a new era in high spatial resolution imaging. The newly commissioned Gemini South Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) combined with the infrared camera Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI), delivers quasi diffraction-limited images over a field of 2 arc-minutes across. However, despite this excellent performance, some variable residues still limit the quality of the analyses. In particular, distortions severely affect GSAOI and become a critical issue for high-precision astrometry and photometry. In this paper, we investigate an optimal way to correct for the distortion following an inverse problem approach. Aims. The formation and properties of star clusters at the edge of H II regions are poorly known, partly due to limitations in angular resolution and sensitivity, which become particularly critical when dealing with extragalactic clusters. In this paper we study the stellar content and star-formation processes in the young N159W region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Methods. We investigate the star-forming sites in N159W at unprecedented spatial resolution using JHKs-band images obtained with the GeMS/GSAOI instrument on the Gemini South telescope. The typical angular resolution of the images is of 100 mas, with a limiting magnitude in H of 22 mag (90 percent completeness). Photometry from our images is used to identify candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in N159W. We also determine the H-band luminosity function of the star cluster at the centre of the H II region and use this to estimate its initial mass function (IMF). Results. We estimate an age of 2 + or - 1 Myr for the central cluster, with its IMF described by a power-law with an index of gamma = - 1.05 + or - 0.2 , and with a total estimated mass of 1300 solar mass. We also identify 104 candidate YSOs, which are concentrated in clumps and subclusters of stars, principally at the edges of the H II region. These clusters display signs of recent and active star-formation such as ultra-compact H II regions, and molecular outflows. This suggests that the YSOs are typically younger than the central cluster, pointing to sequential star-formation in N159W, which has probably been influenced by interactions with the expanding H II bubble.

Physical properties were derived for the candidate open cluster La Serena 94, recently unveiled by the VVV collaboration. Thanks to the exquisite angular resolution provided by GeMS/GSAOI, we could characterize this system in detail, for the first time, with deep photometry in JHK$_{s}$ - bands. Decontaminated JHK$_{s}$ diagrams reach about 5 mag below the cluster turnoff in H. The locus of red clump giants in the colour - colour diagram, together with an extinction law, was used to obtain an average extinction of $A_V =14.18 \pm 0.71$. The same stars were considered as standard - candles to derive the cluster distance, $8.5 \pm 1.0$ kpc. Isochrones were matched to the cluster colour - magnitude diagrams to determine its age, $\log{t(yr)}=9.12\pm 0.06$, and metallicity, $Z=0.02\pm0.01$. A core radius of $r_{c}=0.51\pm 0.04$ pc was found by fitting King models to the radial density profile. By adding up the visible stellar mass to an extrapolated mass function, the cluster mass was estimated as $M=(2.65\pm0.57) \times 10^3$ M$_{\odot}$, consistent with an integrated magnitude of $M_{K}=-5.82\pm0.16$ and a tidal radius of $r_{t}=17.2\pm2.1$ pc. The overall characteristics of La Serena 94 confirm that it is an old open cluster located in the Crux spiral arm towards the fourth Galactic quadrant and distant $7.30\pm 0.49$ kpc from the Galactic centre. We propose a new type of Wave Front Sensor (WFS) derived from the Pyramid WFS (PWFS). This new WFS, called the Flattened Pyramid-WFS (FPWFS), has a reduced Pyramid angle in order to optically overlap the four pupil images into an unique intensity. This map is then used to derive the phase information. In this letter this new WFS is compared to three existing WFSs, namely the PWFS, the Modulated PWFS (MPWFS) and the Zernike WFS (ZWFS) following tests about sensitivity, linearity range and low photon flux behavior. The FPWFS turns out to be more linear than a modulated pyramid for the high-spatial order aberrations but it provides an improved sensitivity compared to the non-modulated pyramid. The noise propagation may even be as low as the ZWFS for some given radial orders. Infrared Dark Clouds are ideal laboratories to study the initial processes of high-mass star and star cluster formation. We investigated star formation activity of an unexplored filamentary dark cloud (~5.7pc x 1.9pc), which itself is part of a large filament (~20pc) located in the S254-S258 OB complex at a distance of 2.5kpc. Using MIPS Spitzer 24 micron data, we uncover 49 sources with SNR greater than 5. We identified 45 sources as candidate YSOs of Class I, Flat-spectrum & Class II nature. Additional 17 candidate YSOs (9 Class I & 8 Class II) are also identified using JHK and WISE photometry. We find that the protostar to Class II sources ratio (~2) and the protostar fraction (~70%) of the region are high. When the protostar fraction compared to other young clusters, it suggests that the star formation in the dark cloud was possibly started only 1 Myr ago. Combining the NIR photometry of the YSO candidates with the theoretical evolutionary models, we infer that most of the candidate YSOs formed in the dark cloud are low-mass (<2 Msolar) in nature. We examine the spatial distribution of the YSOs and find that majority of them are linearly aligned along the highest column density line (N(H2) ~1 x 10^22 cm^-2) of the dark cloud along its long axis at mean nearest neighbor separation of ~0.2pc. Using observed properties of the YSOs, physical conditions of the cloud and a simple cylindrical model, we explore the possible star formation process of this filamentary dark cloud and suggest that gravitational fragmentation within the filament should have played a dominant role in the formation of the YSOs. From the total mass of the YSOs, gaseous mass associated with the dark cloud, and surrounding environment, we infer that the region is presently forming stars at an efficiency ~3% and a rate ~30 Msolar Myr^-1, and may emerge to a richer cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) project envisages transforming one of the VLT units into an adaptive telescope and providing its ESO (European Southern Observatory) second generation instruments with turbulence corrected wavefronts. For MUSE and HAWK-I this correction will be achieved through the GALACSI and GRAAL AO modules working in conjunction with a 1170 actuators Deformable Secondary Mirror (DSM) and the new Laser Guide Star Facility (4LGSF). Multiple wavefront sensors will enable GLAO and LTAO capabilities, whose performance can greatly benefit from a knowledge about the stratification of the turbulence in the atmosphere. This work, totally based on end-to-end simulations, describes the validation tests conducted on a Cn2 profiler adapted for the AOF specifications. Because an absolute profile calibration is strongly dependent on a reliable knowledge of turbulence parameters r0 and L0, the tests presented here refer only to normalized output profiles. Uncertainties in the input parameters inherent to the code are tested as well as the profiler response to different turbulence distributions. It adopts a correction for the unseen turbulence, critical for the GRAAL mode, and highlights the effects of masking out parts of the corrected wavefront on the results. We investigate the star formation activity in a young star forming cluster embedded at the edge of the RCW 41 HII region. As a complementary goal, we aim at demonstrating the gain provided by Wide-Field Adaptive Optics instruments to study young clusters. We used deep, JHKs images from the newly commissioned Gemini-GeMS/GSAOI instrument, complemented with Spitzer IRAC observations, in order to study the photometric properties of the young stellar cluster. GeMS is an AO instrument, delivering almost diffraction limited images over a field of 2' across. The exquisite angular resolution allows us to reach a limiting magnitude of J = 22 for 98% completeness. The combination of the IRAC photometry with our JHKs catalog is used to build color-color diagrams, and select Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) candidates. We detect the presence of 80 Young Stellar Object (YSO) candidates. Those YSOs are used to infer the cluster age, which is found to be in the range 1 to 5 Myr. We find that 1/3 of the YSOs are in a range between 3 to 5 Myr, while 2/3 of the YSO are < 3 Myr. When looking at the spatial distribution of these two populations, we evidence a potential age gradient across the field, suggesting sequential star formation. We construct the IMF, and show that we can sample the mass distribution well into the brown dwarf regime (down to 0.01 Msun). The logarithmic mass function rises to peak at 0.3 Msun, before turning over and declining into the brown dwarf regime. The total cluster mass derived is estimated to be 78 +/- 18 Msun, while the ratio of brown dwarfs to star derived is 18 p/- 5 %. When comparing with other young clusters, we find that the IMF shape of the young cluster embedded within RCW 41 is consistent with those of Trapezium, IC 348 or Chamaeleon I, except for the IMF peak, which happens to be at higher mass. The photometric properties of main sequence (MS) and pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the young cluster Haffner 16 are examined using images recorded with the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) and corrected for atmospheric blurring by the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adapative Optics System (GeMS). A rich population of PMS stars is identified, and comparisons with isochrones suggest an age < 10 Myr assuming a distance modulus of 13.5 (D = 5 kpc). When compared with the solar neighborhood, Haffner 16 is roughly a factor of two deficient in objects with sub-solar masses. PMS objects in the cluster are also more uniformly distributed on the sky than bright MS stars. It is suggested that Haffner 16 is dynamically evolved, and that it is shedding protostars with sub-solar masses. Young low mass clusters like Haffner 16 are one possible source of PMS stars in the field. The cluster will probably evolve on time scales of ~ 100 - 1000 Myr into a diffuse moving group with a mass function that is very different from that which prevailed early in its life., Comment: To appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific

One of the main science goal of the future European Extremely Large Telescope will be to understand the mass assembly process in galaxies as a function of cosmic time. To this aim, a multi-object, AO-assisted integral field spectrograph will be required to map the physical and chemical properties of very distant galaxies. In this paper, we examine the ability of such an instrument to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of a large sample of massive (0.15) redshift bin. We find that a survey of Ngal galaxies that fulfil the range of science goals can be achieved with a ~90 nights program on the E-ELT, provided a multiplex capability M Ngal/8., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables. One of the prominent science goal of the ELTs will be to study the physics and mass assembly of galaxies at very high redshifts. Here, we present the galaxy evolution science case for EAGLE, which is a NIR multi-integral field spectrograph for the E-ELT currently under phase A study. We summarize results of simulations conducted to derive high-level requirements. In particular, we show how we have derived the specifications for the ensquared energy that the AO system needs to provide to reach the scientific goals of the instrument. [Abridged] We present and analyze observations of J033241.88-274853.9 at z=0.6679, using multi-wavelength photometry and imaging with FLAMES/GIRAFFE 3D spectroscopy. J033241.88-274853.9 is found to be a blue, young (~320Myr) stellar disk embedded in a very gas-rich (fgas=73-82% with log(Mstellar/Mo)=9.45) and turbulent phase that is found to be rotating on large spatial scales. We identified two unusual properties of J033241.88-274853.9. (1) The spatial distributions of the ionized gaseous and young stars show a strong decoupling; while almost no stars can be detected in the southern part down to the very deep detection limit of ACS/UDF images, significant emission from the [OII] ionized gas is detected. (2) We detect an excess of velocity dispersion in the southern part of J033241.88-274853.9 in comparison to expectations from a rotating disk model. We considered two disk formation scenarios, depending on the gaseous phase geometry. In the first one, we examined whether J033241.88-274853.9 could be a young rotating disk that has been recently collapsed from a pre-existing, very gas-rich rotating disk. This scenario requires two (unknown) additional assumptions to explain the decoupling between the distribution of stars and gas and the excess of velocity dispersion in the same region. In a second scenario, we examine whether J033241.88-274853.9 could be a merger remnant of two gas-rich disks. In this case, the asymmetry observed between the gas and star distributions, as well as the excess of velocity dispersion, find a common explanation. Shocks produced during the merger in this region can be ionized easily and heat the gas while preventing star formation. Several Wide Field of view Adaptive Optics (WFAO) concepts like Multi-Conjugate AO (MCAO), Multi-Object AO (MOAO) or Ground-Layer AO (GLAO) are currently studied for the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). All these concepts will use atmospheric tomography to reconstruct the turbulent phase volume. In this paper, we explore different reconstruction algorithms and their fundamental limitations. We conduct this analysis in the Fourier domain. This approach allows us to derive simple analytical formulations for the different configurations, and brings a comprehensive view of WFAO limitations. We then investigate model and statistical errors and their impact on the phase reconstruction. Intermediate mass galaxies (logM(Msun)>10) at z~0.6 are the likeliest progenitors of the present-day numerous population of spirals. There is growing evidence that they have evolved rapidly since the last 6 to 8 Gyr ago, and likely have formed a significant fraction of their stellar mass, often showing perturbed morphologies and kinematics. We have gathered a representative sample of 88 such galaxies and have provided robust estimates of their gas phase metallicity. For doing so, we have used moderate spectral resolution spectroscopy at VLT/FORS2 with unprecedented high S/N allowing to remove biases coming from interstellar absorption lines and extinction to establish robust values of R23=([OII]3727 + [OIII]4959,5007)/Hbeta. We definitively confirm that the predominant population of z~0.6 starbursts and luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs) are on average, two times less metal rich than the local galaxies at a given stellar mass. We do find that the metal abundance of the gaseous phase of galaxies is evolving linearly with time, from z=1 to z=0 and after comparing with other studies, from z=3 to z=0. Combining our results with the reported evolution of the Tully Fisher relation, we do find that such an evolution requires that ~30% of the stellar mass of local galaxies have been formed through an external supply of gas, thus excluding the close box model. Distant starbursts & LIRGs have properties (metal abundance, star formation efficiency & morphologies) similar to those of local LIRGs. Their underlying physics is likely dominated by gas infall probably through merging or interactions. Our study further supports the rapid evolution of z~0.4-1 galaxies. [Abridged] We have developed an end-to-end simulation to specify the science requirements of a MOAO-fed integral field spectrograph on either an 8m or 42m telescope. Our simulations re-scales observations of local galaxies or results from numerical simulations of disk or interacting galaxies. For the current analysis, we limit ourselves to a local disk galaxy which exhibits simple rotation and a simulation of a merger. We have attempted to generalize our results by introducing the simple concepts of "PSF contrast" which is the amount of light polluting adjacent spectra which we find drives the smallest EE at a given spatial scale. The choice of the spatial sampling is driven by the "scale-coupling", i.e., the relationship between the IFU pixel scale and the size of the features that need to be recovered by 3D spectroscopy in order to understand the nature of the galaxy and its substructure. Because the dynamical nature of galaxies are mostly reflected in their large-scale motions, a relatively coarse spatial resolution is enough to distinguish between a rotating disk and a major merger. Although we used a limited number of morpho-kinematic cases, our simulations suggest that, on a 42m telescope, the choice of an IFU pixel scale of 50-75 mas seems to be sufficient. Such a coarse sampling has the benefit of lowering the exposure time to reach a specific signal-to-noise as well as relaxing the performance of the MOAO system. On the other hand, recovering the full 2D-kinematics of z~4 galaxies requires high signal-to-noise and at least an EE of 34% in 150 mas (2 pixels of 75 mas). Finally, we carried out a similar study at z=1.6 with a MOAO-fed spectrograph for an 8m, and find that at least an EE of 30% at 0.25 arcsec spatial sampling is required to understand the nature of disks and mergers., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS

Using the multi-integral field spectrograph GIRAFFE at VLT, we have derived the K-band Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) at z~0.6 for a representative sample of 65 galaxies with emission lines. We confirm that the scatter in the z~0.6 TFR is caused by galaxies with anomalous kinematics, and find a positive and strong correlation between the complexity of the kinematics and the scatter that they contribute to the TFR. Considering only relaxed-rotating disks, the scatter, and possibly also the slope of the TFR, do not appear to evolve with z. We detect an evolution of the K-band TFR zero point between z~0.6 and z=0, which, if interpreted as an evolution of the K-band luminosity of rotating disks, would imply that a brightening of 0.66+/-0.14 mag occurs between z~0.6 and z=0. Any disagreement with the results of Flores et al. (2006) are attributed to both an improvement of the local TFR and the more detailed accurate measurement of the rotation velocities in the distant sample. Most of the uncertainty can be explained by the relatively coarse spatial-resolution of the kinematical data. Because most rotating disks at z~0.6 are unlikely to experience further merging events, one may assume that their rotational velocity does not evolve dramatically. If true, our result implies that rotating disks observed at z~0.6 are rapidly transforming their gas into stars, to be able to double their stellar masses and be observed on the TFR at z=0. The rotating disks observed are indeed emission-line galaxies that are either starbursts or LIRGs, which implies that they are forming stars at a high rate. Thus, a significant fraction of the rotating disks are forming the bulk of their stars within 6 to 8 Gyr, in good agreement with former studies of the evolution of the M-Z relation., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. v2 taking into account comments from language editor

We present a first combined analysis of the morphological and dynamical properties for the Intermediate MAss Galaxy Evolution Sequence (IMAGES) sample. It is a representative sample of 52 z~0.6 galaxies with Mstell from 1.5 to 15 10^10Msun and possessing 3D resolved kinematics and HST deep imaging in at least two broad band filters. We aim at evaluate robustly the evolution of rotating spirals since z~0.6, as well as to test the different schemes for classifying galaxies morphologically. We used all the information provided by multi-band images, color maps and 2 dimensional light fitting to assign to each object a morphological class. We divided our sample between spiral disks, peculiar objects, compact objects and mergers. Using our morphological classification scheme, 4/5 of identified spirals are rotating disks and more than 4/5 of identified peculiar galaxies show complex kinematics, while automatic classification methods such as Concentration-Asymmetry and GINI-M20 severely overestimate the fraction of relaxed disk galaxies. Using this methodology, we find that the fraction of rotating spirals has increased by a factor ~ 2 during the last 6 Gyrs, a much higher fraction that found previously based on morphologies alone. These rotating spiral disks are forming stars very rapidly, doubling their stellar masses over the last 6 Gyrs, while most of their stars have been formed few Gyrs earlier, which reveals the presence of a large gas supply. Because they are likely the progenitors of local spirals, we can conjecture how their properties are evolving. Their disks show some evidence for an inside-out growth and the gas supply/accretion is not made randomly as the disk need to be stable in order to match the local disk properties., Comment: Typos corrected, reference added

The Large Program IMAGES is near 2/3 of its completion. It provides us with kinematics (GIRAFFE deployable IFUs), gas chemistry (FORS2), detailed morphologies (HST/ACS) and IR photometry (Spitzer) for a set of 70 galaxies representative of intermediate mass galaxies (MJ<=-20.3 or 1.5e10 Mo) at z=0.4-0.75. We discover that, 6 Gyr ago, a significant fraction of galaxies (>40%) had anomalous kinematics, i.e. kinematics significantly discrepant from those of rotational or dispersion supported galaxies. The anomalous kinematics cause the observed large dispersion of the Tully-Fisher relation at large distances. (abbreviated) We present the first results of the ESO large program, ``IMAGES'' which aims at obtaining robust measurements of the kinematics of distant galaxies using the multi-IFU mode of GIRAFFE on the VLT. 3D spectroscopy is essential to robustly measure the often distorted kinematics of distant galaxies (e.g., Flores et al. 2006). We derive the velocity fields and $\sigma$-maps of 36 galaxies at 0.4 15 A) at z=0.4-0.75, which are a representative subsample of the population of M_stellar>1.5x10^{10} M_sun emission line galaxies in this redshift range, and are largely unaffected by cosmic variance. Taking into account all galaxies -with or without emission lines- in that redshift range, we find that at least 41+/-7% of them have anomalous kinematics, i.e., they are not dynamically relaxed. This includes 26+/-7% of distant galaxies with complex kinematics, i.e., they are not simply pressure or rotationally supported. Our result implies that galaxy kinematics are among the most rapidly evolving properties, because locally, only a few percent of the galaxies in this mass range have complex kinematics., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, Accepted by A&A

Numerical simulations predict that minor mergers are an important channel for the mass assembly of galaxies. However, minor mergers are relatively difficult to detect using imaging, especially at high redshift. While such events are much less violent than major mergers, they can nevertheless leave several features on the kinematical structures of remnant galaxies which could be detected using 3D spectroscopy. We present the first direct detection of a minor merger in a z~0.6 galaxy. Such events could indeed be good candidates to explain the kinematics of perturbed rotating disks observed with GIRAFFE at z~0.6. We present photometric and kinematical evidence of such an event in a combined analysis of three-band HST/ACS imaging and VLT/GIRAFFE 2D-kinematics. Using these data, we are able to demonstrate that a minor merger of a relatively small satellite (mass ratio ~1:18) is occurring in this galaxy. We also derive a total SFR ~21Mo/yr. In the last few years, new Adaptive Optics [AO] techniques have emerged to answer new astronomical challenges: Ground-Layer AO [GLAO] and Multi-Conjugate AO [MCAO] to access a wider Field of View [FoV], Multi-Object AO [MOAO] for the simultaneous observation of several faint galaxies, eXtreme AO [XAO] for the detection of faint companions. In this paper, we focus our study to one of these applications : high red-shift galaxy observations using MOAO techniques in the framework of Extremely Large Telescopes [ELTs]. We present the high-level specifications of a dedicated instrument. We choose to describe the scientific requirements with the following criteria : 40% of Ensquared Energy [EE] in H band (1.65um) and in an aperture size from 25 to 150 mas. Considering these specifications we investigate different AO solutions thanks to Fourier based simulations. Sky Coverage [SC] is computed for Natural and Laser Guide Stars [NGS, LGS] systems. We show that specifications are met for NGS-based systems at the cost of an extremely low SC. For the LGS approach, the option of low order correction with a faint NGS is discussed. In this paper, we present a first comparison of different Adaptive Optics (AO) concepts to reach a given scientific specification for 3D spectroscopy on Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We consider that a range of 30%-50% of Ensquarred Energy (EE) in H band (1.65um) and in an aperture size from 25 to 100mas is representative of the scientific requirements. From these preliminary choices, different kinds of AO concepts are investigated : Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO), Multi-Object AO (MOAO) and Laser Guide Stars AO (LGS).
