Knowledge about the vertical structure of forests, such as forest height, above-ground biomass (AGB), and the vertical biomass distribution is important for understanding carbon allocation, structural diversity, and succession and degradation dynamics in forest ecosystems. While the use of lidar (light detection and ranging) observations is well established to investigate the vertical structure of forests, the sensitivity of P-band synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) observations to biomass and vertical forest structure is not yet well understood. Here we use lidar observations from NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to analyse the sensitivity of airborne P-band SAR tomography backscatter to forest height and AGB at two tropical forests in Lopé and Mondah, Gabon, Africa. We use GEDI observations to parametrize an empirical model for estimating forest height and we use a random forest model for estimating AGB from TomoSAR profiles. The validation with Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS) airborne lidar data shows moderate performance for estimating forest height (RMSE = 8.2 m in Lopé and 9.8 m in Mondah) and moderate to good performance for total AGB (RMSE = 115.3 Mg/ha in Lopé and 117.8 Mg/ha in Mondah). We also estimated the vertical distribution of AGB using the corrected TomoSAR backscatter and compared it with AGB profiles derived from field observations in Mondah, which indicates potential to use TomoSAR observations for estimating vertical AGB distribution over tropical forests. However, our results demonstrate the need for targeted field observations of vertical biomass profiles in order to make full use of P-band TomoSAR to map the vertical structure of tropical forests. Surface elevation estimates from high resolution spaceborne image (HRSI) stereogrammetry are used to examine fine-scaled structure of boreal forest canopies. These data can depict detailed spatial patterns of vertical forest structure at remote sites across the circumpolar domain where these estimates would otherwise be unavailable. This work examines where these estimates are most effective at describing vertical forest structure to explain which canopy surfaces they represent. We evaluated the variation in canopy surface estimates captured from four general types of HRSI digital surface models (DSMs) across the full range of boreal canopy cover. These DSMs, classified into 4 types by grouping them according to the acquisition's (1) sun elevation angle (low or high) and (2) seasonality-driven ground surface condition (snow presence/absence), vary with acquisition characteristics and the details of this variation continues to be studied. We explored some of this variation by comparing the distributions of differences in boreal canopy percentile heights derived from reference small footprint lidar in Tanana Valley, Alaska with canopy surface elevations derived from these 4 types of HRSI DSMs. We examined how canopy surface estimates from HRSI DSMs differ according to acquisition characteristics and canopy cover, and ultimately which canopy surfaces are represented in these DSMs. Our results help clarify which boreal canopy surfaces are representative of those captured with HRSI DSMs. They show that in the Tanana Valley (1) DSMs grouped by sun elevation angle and ground surface condition provide different surface estimates of boreal canopies; (2) the two DSM types that appear to most differently capture boreal forest canopy surfaces are DSMs from snow-free images acquired at sun elevation angles <30° (Low sun elev. & snow-free) and those with snow-cover at sun elevation angles ≥30° (High sun elev. & snow-free); (3) DSMs with snow most often do not capture upper canopy surfaces; (4) the "Low sun elev. & snow-free" DSMs resolve surfaces that are most representative of upper canopy surfaces (dense forests >60% cover, 70th–80th percentile heights); and (5) in the most dense forests (>80% cover) where canopy gaps are least likely to bias downward the average surface estimates, the snow-free DSM types are representative of 70th - 80th percentile heights ("Low sun elev. & snow-free") and 60th–70th percentile heights ("High sun elev. & snow-free"). The combination of horizontal structure (canopy cover) and acquisition characteristics affect the boreal vertical structure (canopy surface height) estimates from spaceborne stereogrammetry. Global food production in the developing world occurs within sub-hectare fields that are difficult to identify with moderate resolution satellite imagery. Knowledge about the distribution of these fields is critical in food security programs. We developed a semi-automated image segmentation approach using wall-to-wall sub-meter imagery with high-performance computing to map crop area (CA) throughout Tigray, Ethiopia that encompasses over 41,000 km 2 . Multiple processing streams were tested to minimize mapping error while applying five unique smoothing kernels to capture differences in land surface texture associated to CA. Typically, very-small fields (mean < 2 ha) have a smooth image roughness compared to natural scrub/shrub woody vegetation at the ~1 m scale and these features can be segmented in panchromatic imagery with multi-level histogram thresholding. Multi-temporal very-high resolution (VHR) panchromatic imagery with multi-spectral VHR are sufficient in extracting critical CA information needed in food security programs. A 2011 to 2015 CA map was produced, using over 3000 WorldView-1 panchromatic images wall-to-wall in 1/2° mosaics for Tigray, Ethiopia. CA was evaluated with nearly 3000 WorldView-2 2 m multispectral 250 × 250 m image subsets by seven expert interpretations, and with in-situ global positioning system photography. CA estimates ranged from 32 to 41% in sub regions of Tigray with median maximum per bin commission and omission errors of 11% and 1% respectively, with most of the error occurring in bins <15%. This empirical, simple, and low direct cost approach via U.S. government license agreement to access commercial VHR data, could be a viable big-data high-performance computing methodology to extract wall-to-wall CA for other regions of the world that have very-small agriculture fields with similar image texture. Forests of the Contiguous United States (CONUS) have been found to be a large contributor to the global atmospheric carbon sink. The magnitude and nature of this sink is still uncertain and recent studies have sought to define the dynamics that control its strength and longevity. The Landsat series of satellites has been a vital resource to understand the long-term changes in land cover that can impact ecosystem function and terrestrial carbon stock. We combine annual Landsat forest disturbance history from 1985 to 2011 with single date IKONOS stereo imagery to estimate the change in young forest canopy height and above ground live dry biomass accumulation for selected sites in the CONUS. Our approach follows an approximately linear growth rate following clearing over short intervals and does not estimate the distinct non-linear growth rate over longer intervals. We produced canopy height models by differencing digital surface models estimated from IKONOS stereo pairs with national elevation data (NED). Correlations between height and biomass were established independently using airborne LiDAR, and then applied to the IKONOS-estimated canopy height models. Graphing current biomass against time since disturbance provided biomass accumulation rates. For 20 study sites distributed across five regions of the CONUS, 19 showed statistically significant recovery trends (p < 0.001) with canopy growth from 0.26 m yr − 1 to 0.73 m yr − 1 . Aboveground live dry biomass (AGB) density accumulation ranged from 1.31 t/ha yr − 1 to 12.47 t/ha yr − 1 . Mean forest AGB accumulation was 6.31 t/ha yr − 1 among all sites with significant growth trends. We evaluated the accuracy of our estimates by comparing to field estimated site index curves of growth, airborne LiDAR data, and independent model predictions of C accumulation. Growth estimates found with this approach are consistent with site index curves and total biomass estimates fall within the range of field estimates. The boreal forest accounts for one-third of global forests, but remains largely inaccessible to ground-based measurements and monitoring. It contains large quantities of carbon in its vegetation and soils, and research suggests that it will be subject to increasingly severe climate-driven disturbance. We employ a suite of ground-, airborne- and space-based measurement techniques to derive the first satellite LiDAR-based estimates of aboveground carbon for the entire circumboreal forest biome. Incorporating these inventory techniques with uncertainty analysis, we estimate total aboveground carbon of 38±3.1Pg. This boreal forest carbon is mostly concentrated from 50 to 55° N in eastern Canada and from 55 to 60° N in eastern Eurasia. Both of these regions are expected to warm >3°C by 2100, and monitoring the effects of warming on these stocks is important to understanding its future carbon balance. Our maps establish a baseline for future quantification of circumboreal carbon and the described technique should provide a robust method for future monitoring of the spatial and temporal changes of the aboveground carbon content. We investigated normalized difference vegetation index data from the NOAA series of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers and found regions in North America that experienced marked increases in annual photosynthetic capacity at various times from 1982 to 2005. Inspection of these anomalous areas with multi-resolution data from Landsat, Ikonos, aerial photography, and ancillary data revealed a range of causes for the NDVI increases: climatic influences; severe drought and subsequent recovery; irrigated agriculture expansion; insect outbreaks followed by logging and subsequent regeneration; and forest fires with subsequent regeneration. Vegetation in areas in the high Northern Latitudes appear to be solely impacted by climatic influences. In other areas examined, the impact of anthropogenic effects is more direct. The pattern of NDVI anomalies over longer time periods appear to be driven by long-term climate change but most appear to be associated with climate variability on decadal and shorter time scales along with direct anthropogenic land cover conversions. The local variability of drivers of change demonstrates the difficulty in interpreting changes in NDVI and indicates the complex nature of changes in the carbon cycle within North America. Coarse scale analysis of changes could well fail to identify the important local scale drivers controlling the carbon cycle and to identify the relative roles of disturbance and climate change. The capability of spaceborne stereogrammetry using very high-resolution (VHR, <2 m) imagery with various environmental, experimental, and sensor configurations for characterizing forest canopy surfaces has not been completely explored. Existing archives of VHR imagery include a limited subset of potential stereo image acquisition configurations and may therefore exclude optimal configurations for capturing critical structural features of forest canopy surface. By contrast, simulated VHR imagery from 3-D radiative transfer models (RTM) can explore the full range of spatial, spectral, and sun-sensor configurations to identify factors that contribute to uncertainties in stereo-derived estimates of forest canopy structure. We developed a novel method to simulate VHR stereopairs using the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model and then derive surface elevations from the simulated images. We reconstructed one open-canopy and one closed-canopy forest scene and created a reference digital surface model/digital terrain model (DSM/DTM) using airborne small-footprint lidar points over the study sites. The VHR simulations were configured to match three independent WorldView stereopairs. The results showed that, compared to the reference DSM, the surface elevations derived using simulated and WorldView image data were consistent, with differences of <1.6 m in vertical bias, < 1 m in root mean square error (RMSE), and < 0.07 in correlation coefficient (R). We demonstrated that realistic 3-D RTM simulations could be georeferenced with a camera model for DSM generation from simulated stereopairs. The optimal configurations for very high-resolution (VHR, <2 m) spaceborne imagery collection to support stereogrammetry over complex forested terrain remain uncertain. We conducted a comprehensive sensitivity study of digital surface models (DSMs) derived from thousands of simulated along-track VHR stereopairs over two lidar-reconstructed forested scenes of closed and open canopies using the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model. We evaluated the influence of convergence angle (CA), solar illumination, and image resolution on the derived DSM accuracy relative to the reference DSM and digital terrain model (DTM) products from airborne lidar data. Our results confirmed that the CA is the most critical acquisition parameter for DSM accuracy. Compared to the frequently used CA of ∼ 35 ∘ for along-track stereopair acquisitions by WorldView satellites, a smaller CA can provide better accuracy for forest canopy shape estimation by reducing occlusions and mitigating radiometric variance caused by the bidirectional reflectance characteristics of vegetation. For forested scenes over relatively flat terrain, oblique solar zenith angles (50 − 70 ∘) yielded more consistent DSMs with better accuracy, whereas images with a hotspot configuration generated elevations that were closer to the DTM. Image pairs with smaller ground sample distance (GSD) improved the DSM accuracy, and combinations of small (nadir) and large (off-nadir) GSDs had accuracy between those derived from homogeneous GSDs. These simulation results suggest that available global archives of DSMs from VHR stereo imagery collected under a range of acquisition configurations will yield inconsistent estimates of canopy surfaces. This study also provides a benchmark dataset and configuration guide for 1) selecting existing data to retrieve the forest canopy surface shape, and 2) defining requirements for future satellite missions to characterize the forest canopy surface using stereogrammetry. • A radiative transfer model can simulate stereo imagery from any sensor and scene configuration. • Optimal resolution, convergence angle, and solar direction can improve stereo imagery over forests. • Small convergence angles and oblique solar direction generate better stereo surface models over forests. • Large convergence angles or imaging in the hotspot can improve terrain models in open forests. • Further optimization is possible over any surface type and sensor. Changing trends in ecosystem productivity can be quantified using satellite observations of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). However, the estimation of trends from NDVI time series differs substantially depending on analyzed satellite dataset, the corresponding spatiotemporal resolution, and the applied statistical method. Here we compare the performance of a wide range of trend estimation methods and demonstrate that performance decreases with increasing inter-annual variability in the NDVI time series. Trend slope estimates based on annual aggregated time series or based on a seasonal-trend model show better performances than methods that remove the seasonal cycle of the time series. A breakpoint detection analysis reveals that an overestimation of breakpoints in NDVI trends can result in wrong or even opposite trend estimates. Based on our results, we give practical recommendations for the application of trend methods on long-term NDVI time series. Particularly, we apply and compare different methods on NDVI time series in Alaska, where both greening and browning trends have been previously observed. Here, the multi-method uncertainty of NDVI trends is quantified through the application of the different trend estimation methods. Our results indicate that greening NDVI trends in Alaska are more spatially and temporally prevalent than browning trends. We also show that detected breakpoints in NDVI trends tend to coincide with large fires.
