The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, Canada is focused on reconstructing the communities that existed at the end of the Cretaceous. This challenge is made more difficult because for many of the taxa present, few complete specimens are preserved. In most smaller animals, all that remains preserved are isolated elements such as jaws. Teleost fish are of particular interest because they are dominant in today's aquatic communities. They are thought to have diversified after the Cretacious-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction event, but many questions about early freshwater members of this group remain. Even the number of species present remains a mystery. Through an ambitious SR-μCT study we are non-destructively digitally dissecting both isolated elements and articulated skeletons that remain embedded in their rock matrix. Through comparison studies we are identifying features to aid in their identification while preserving the original fossils in an unaltered state for future studies.

XRF maps of a uranium ore sample have been analyzed using software that allows the graphical spatial correlations of all detected elements to be measured. The association of uranium with arsenic, nickel and cesium was explored; all showed unique finely-granular microscopic patterns that could be used to assist the recovery of uranium and rare earths.

In the subsurface, the interplay between microbial communities and the surrounding mineral substrate, potentially used as an energy source, results in different mineralized structures. The molecular composition of such structures can record and preserve information about the metabolic pathways that have produced them. To characterize the molecular composition of the subsurface biosphere, we have analyzed some core samples by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) that were collected in the borehole BH8 during the operations of the Mars Analog and Technology Experiment (MARTE) project. The molecular analysis at a micron-scale mapped the occurrence of several inorganic complexes bearing PO3-, SOx(2to4)-, NOx(2,3)-, FeOx(1,2)- SiO2-, and Cl-. Their distribution correlates with organic molecules that were tentatively assigned to saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, saccharides, phospholipids, sphingolipids, and potential peptide fragments. SOx- appear to be mineralizing some microstructures larger than 25 microns, which have branched morphologies, and that source SO3-bearing adducts. PO3-rich compounds occur in two different groups of microstructures which size, morphology, and composition are different. While a group of >40-micron sized circular micronodules lacks organic compounds, an ovoidal microstructure is associated with m/z of other lipids. To address the limitation of conventional statistics in dealing with hyperspectral data of satellite and airborne images, two contextual analyses are introduced in this chapter. The first case study presents the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics algorithm capable of classifying hyperspectral data to support remote sensing and geographic information systems researchers in understanding and predicting changes in natural earth processes. The classification algorithm is based on a fuzzy approach combining a decision tree classifier with a fuzzy multiple-criteria decision analysis classifier. The second case study presents the development of an AI tool that extracts features from the hyperspectral data to transform a two-dimensional (2D) satellite and airborne picture to a pseudo-3D picture to improve complexity and produce multidirectional sun-shaded pictures and their edges. Such 3D images are useful in supporting the discovery of prospective ground for mineral exploration, extraction from the earth of precious minerals or other geological materials, usually from deposits of ore, veins, lodes, seams, reefs, or placer deposits, and overall to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral exploration.

Understanding the association between precious metals and trace elements in ore minerals is integral to ore deposit research and exploration. In situ characterization of ore minerals is now at the forefront of this field. The power of in situ element mapping and characterization is the ability to combine geochemistry with mineralogical and broader geological context. Synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray techniques such as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) are incredibly powerful tools for studying ore systems with applications in exploration, geometallurgy, and remediation. We provide examples of these applications to gold-bearing samples from across the world-class Timmins gold camp in Canada. Analysis of thin sections, billet offcuts, as well as cut rock slabs highlights the versatility of SR-XRF and XANES analysis at multiple stages of deposit investigation and for multiple sample types. SR-XRF mapping of large areas at 20 μm resolution is very effective for quickly identifying and characterizing gold and trace element associations with gold, even in low grade and nuggety samples. Large area mapping is integral to quickly providing key geochemical information within the sample context as well as for improving efficiency and mitigating bias in grain selection for higher resolution analyses. High-resolution SR-XRF mapping and XANES analysis of individual mineral grains are compared to conventional EPMA mapping and reveals micrometer scale associations with trace metals, Au, and As. The characterization of trace element associations with different fluid events and gold mineralization styles is integral to understanding mineralizing systems and developing exploration vectors. Point XRF and XANES identified and characterized the presence and nature of refractory gold in pyrite as well as grain scale variability in As speciation. An early understanding of the distribution and redox state of gold, trace metals, and deleterious elements at the exploration stage has implications for mitigating future geometallurgy and remediation issues. The examples presented highlight the potential for the application of synchrotron studies early in the mine cycle for characterizing gold mineralization in orogenic systems.

The Dome mine is host to over 16 Moz of orogenic gold deposited during a period of up to 25 Ma through multi-stage enrichment. The earliest economic stage of veining is an extensive set of ankerite veins which were historically considered barren except where overprinted by subsequent veining events. Gold in these veins is intimately associated with pyrite mineralization, and three stages of pyrite growth have been identified (Py1,2,3). The trace element content of each stage of pyrite growth determined by dynamic-secondary ion mass spectrometry and synchrotron radiation x-ray fluorescence reveals that there were three auriferous fluid events, each with a unique gold and trace element fingerprint which can be related to deposits wide mineralization events. Early ankerite vein forming fluids were auriferous, lower temperature (200–250 °C) and deposited Py1 enriched in gold, metals and metalloids (As, Cu, Ni, Zn). Py2 growth is related to deposit wide quartz-tourmaline and quartz-fuchsite veining based on trace element geochemistry, Au:Ag, and associated mineral assemblages. This deposited Ni enriched pyrite, tellurides, galena, and gold with anomalously high Au:Ag ratios. There is also evidence for remobilization of early gold and trace elements from Py1 pyrite during the Py2 forming event. The final stage of gold endowment in the ankerite veins is related to a deposit (and camp) wide quartz veining event. Py3 growth is trace element (As, Ni, Cu) and Au poor with respect to Py1 and Py2, however, this veining event contributed the bulk of the ankerite vein gold endowment. The remobilization of gold and trace elements from sieve textured Py1 in addition to overprinting Py2 and Py3 and their associated gold endowments helps explain the difficulty in applying bulk rock trace element vectors to gold at the Dome mine. The work also provides conclusive evidence for the auriferous nature of early ankerite veining at the Dome mine, and reveals that the system was fertile for a period of over 7 to 25 Ma, a key component for the formation of a world-class deposit.

The earliest auriferous veining event in the development of the over 16 Moz gold endowment at the Dome mine was an extensive set of ankerite veins (over 5400 m strike length). The depositional context of the Dome mine ankerite veins has been historically contentious and their role in the mineralization history of the deposit not well understood. We present a deposit wide geochemical study of the ankerite veins and their host rocks, with observations from new underground mapping. Ankerite veining across the mine is almost exclusively restricted to the Vipond Formation, which is Fe rich and tholeiitic in nature. Metamorphic fluids and ankerite vein formation generally focused along flow boundaries in the volcanic sequence, however, carbonatization is ubiquitous. The flows of the Vipond Formation maintain their protolith geochemical signatures as REE, Zr, Al2O3, TiO2, and Y are largely immobile during mineralization and alteration, which mobilized Na2O, K2O, and locally Fe2O3. Observed enrichments of N (and the δ15N of this N) in volcanic glasses altered on Earth's modern and ancient seafloor are relevant in considerations of modern global N subduction fluxes and ancient life on Earth, and similarly altered glasses on Mars and other extraterrestrial bodies could serve as valuable tracers of biogeochemical processes. Palagonitized glasses and whole-rock samples of volcanic rocks on the modern seafloor (ODP Site 1256D) contain 3–18 ppm N with δ15Nair values of up to +4.5‰. Variably altered glasses from Mesozoic ophiolites (Troodos, Cyprus; Stonyford volcanics, USA) contain 2–53 ppm N with δ15N of −6.3 to +7‰. Non-destructive analytical techniques that enable the rapid screening of large numbers of coins are of interest for numismatic studies. Using a tuneable synchrotron X-ray source provides an intensity that cannot be matched by laboratory X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sources, reduces analytical time and increases sample throughput. Here we evaluate the combination of the high intensity and spatial resolution provided by a synchrotron source with the highly resolved sensitivity afforded by a wavelength dispersive (WD) spectrometer for the rapid, quantitative, and non-destructive XRF mapping of trace platinum in ancient Roman gold coins. In this study, the rapid mapping of >3300 data points in (400 μm × 400 μm) areas was done to determine Pt distribution across the gold coin matrix. Quantitative analysis was performed by using gold reference materials with known platinum concentrations. The results of this study agree within −11 to +3% of previously determined trace platinum concentrations in these gold coins. The application of this method will enable researchers to quickly screen large numbers of ancient coins for classification and comparison for further analysis.

Massive to lobate volcanic flows and brecciated hyaloclastite units in the Abitibi greenstone belt allow investigation of Late Archæan seafloor alteration and associated incorporation into these rocks of nitrogen (N) biogeochemical signatures. In this suite (the Blake River Group), hyaloclastite units containing putative microbial ichnofossils are particularly enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (K, Rb, Ba, Cs), B, and Li, consistent with their having experienced the greatest fluid–rock interaction during subseafloor hydrothermal alteration. Similarly, silicate-δ18O and δ15N values for samples from the hyaloclastites show the greatest shifts from plausible magmatic values. The chemical and isotopic patterns in these tholeiitic igneous rocks greatly resemble those in modern altered seafloor basalts, consistent with the preservation of an Archæan seafloor alteration signature. The N enrichments and shifts in δ15N appear to reflect stabilization of illite and interaction with fluids carrying sedimentary/organic signatures. Enrichments of N (and the δ15N of this N) in altered glass volcanic rocks on Earth's modern and ancient seafloor point to the potential utility of N for tracing past and present biogeochemical processes in similar rocks at/near the Mars surface.

Dhofar 1671 is a relatively new meteorite that previous studies suggest belongs to the Rumuruti chondrite class. Major and REE compositions are generally in agreement with average values of the R chondrites (RCs). Moderately volatile elements such as Se and Zn abundances are lower than the R chondrite values that are similar to those in ordinary chondrites (OCs). Porphyritic olivine pyroxene (POP), radial pyroxene (RP), and barred olivine (BO) chondrules are embedded in a proportionately equal volume of matrix, one of the characteristic features of RCs. Microprobe analyses demonstrate compositional zoning in chondrule and matrix olivines showing Fa-poor interior and Fa-rich outer zones. Precise oxygen isotope data for chondrules and matrix obtained by laser-assisted fluorination show a genetic isotopic relationship between OCs and RCs. On the basis of our data, we propose a strong affinity between these groups and suggest that OC chondrule precursors could have interacted with a 17O-rich matrix to form RC chondrules (i.e., ∆17O shifts from ~1‰ to ~3‰). These interactions could have occurred at the same time as “exotic” clasts in brecciated samples formed such as NWA 10214 (LL3–6), Parnallee (LL3), PCA91241 (R3.8–6), and Dhofar 1671 (R3.6). We also infer that the source of the oxidation and 17O enrichment is the matrix, which may have been enriched in 17O-rich water. The abundance of matrix in RCs relative to OCs, ensured that these rocks would be apparently more oxidized and appreciably 17O-enriched. In situ analysis of Dhofar 1671 is recommended to further strengthen the link between OCs and RCs.

Volcanic glasses are rarely preserved in the rock record, and the quality of preservation generally declines with increasing age. Records preserved in ancient basaltic glasses therefore provide important links between processes operating in the distant past, and those that are active on the Earth today. Microbial colonization has been linked to the formation of characteristic structures in basaltic glass, including tubules and granule-filled tubules, which are thought to be produced by microbially mediated glass dissolution. Structures of similar occurrence and morphology but filled almost entirely with fine-grained titanite have been documented in some ancient metabasalts. It has been suggested that the ancient titanite-mineralized structures are mineralized equivalents of hollow tubules in modern glassy basaltic rocks, but a direct link has not been firmly established. We report the discovery of tubular bioalteration structures in fresh and minimally altered basaltic glasses of middle Jurassic (164 Ma) age from the Stonyford Volcanic Complex (SFVC), Coast Range Ophiolite, California. Tubular structures hosted in unaltered basaltic glass are typically hollow, whilst those in zones of zeolitic alteration are mineralized by titanite. Tubules are continuous across zeolite-glass interfaces, which mark an abrupt change from titanite-filled to hollow tubules, demonstrating that titanite growth occurs preferentially within pre-existing tubular structures. Titanite mineralization in the SFVC represent a link between tubular structures in modern basaltic glass and titanite-mineralized features of similar morphology and spatial distribution in ancient metabasalts. Our observations support a link between textures in modern glassy basaltic rocks and some of the oldest-known putative ichnofossils.

Hollow tubular structures in subaqueously-emplaced basaltic glass may represent trace fossils caused by microbially-mediated glass dissolution. Mineralized structures of similar morphology and spatial distribution in ancient, metamorphosed basaltic rocks have widely been interpreted as ichnofossils, possibly dating to similar to 3.5 Ga or greater. Doubts have been raised, however, regarding the biogenicity of the original hollow tubules and granules in basaltic glass. In particular, although elevated levels of biologically-important elements such as C, S, N, and P as well as organic compounds have been detected in association with these structures, a direct detection of unambiguously biogenic organic molecules has not been accomplished. In this study, we describe the direct detection of proteins associated with tubular textures in basaltic glass using synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy. Protein-rich organic matter is shown to be associated with the margins of hollow and partly-mineralized tubules. Furthermore, a variety of tubule-infilling secondary minerals, including Ti-rich oxide phases, were observed filling and preserving the microtextures, demonstrating a mechanism whereby cellular materials may be preserved through geologic time.

Rocks that make up the Mesoarchean (~3Ga) Buhwa greenstone belt (BGB) of the Zimbabwe craton divide into three associations: shelf, basinal, and transitional. Chert and iron formation exist within the three associations, allowing the unique opportunity to compare textural and geochemical attributes of iron- and silica-rich rocks from distinct positions within a single basin. We analyzed major-, trace-, and rare-earth-elements, and silicon and oxygen isotopes of chert and iron formation from the shelf, basinal, and transitional associations within the BGB. The ~15 Ma, 26 km diameter Ries impact structure in south-central Germany was one of the first terrestrial impact structures where evidence of impact-associated hydrothermal alteration was recognized. Previous studies suggested that pervasive, high-temperature hydrothermal activity was restricted to the area within the “inner ring” (i.e., the crater-fill impactite units). Here we present mineralogical evidence for localized hydrothermal activity in the ejecta beyond the crater rim in two previously unstudied settings: a pervasively altered lens of suevite ejecta directly overlying the Bunte Breccia at the Aumuhle quarry; and suevite ejecta at depth overlain by ~20 m of lacustrine sediments sampled by the Wornitzostheim 1965 drill core. A comprehensive set of X-ray diffraction analyses indicates five distinct alteration regimes (1) surficial ambient weathering characterized by smectite and a minor illitic component; (2) locally restricted hydrothermal activity characterized by an illitic component and minor smectite; (3) hydrothermal activity at depth characterized by smectite, a minor illitic component, and calcite; (4) hydrothermal activity at depth characterized by smectite, a minor illitic component, calcite, zeolites, and clinochlore; and (5) pervasive hydrothermal activity at depth characterized by smectite, a minor illitic component, and minor clinochlore. These data spatially extend the Ries postimpact hydrothermal system suggesting a much more extensive, complex, and dynamic system than previously thought. Constraining the mineralogical alteration regimes at the Ries impact structure may also further our understanding of impact-associated phyllosilicate formation on Mars with implications for climate models and habitability.

We report precise triple oxygen isotope data of bulk materials and separated fractions of several Shergotty–Nakhla–Chassigny (SNC) meteorites using enhanced laser-assisted fluorination technique. Subvertically- to vertically-dipping Archean strata provide an excellent opportunity to study synvolcanic structures and internal organization of subaqueous volcanic complexes. The Abitibi greenstone belt in Quebec, Canada, hosts a number of these volcanic complexes and specifically the unique Blake River Megacaldera Complex. The Blake River Megacaldera Complex is composed of (i) an initial shield phase known as the Misema Caldera and (ii) two graben-type calderas known as the New Senator and Noranda calderas. The southern portion of the New Senator Caldera, the focus of this study, is of particular interest as the structure hosts the 54 Mt Horne Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit. Detailed facies mapping, coupled with geochemical and geochronological analysis at multiple outcrop localities throughout the city of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, show that the stratigraphy of the New Senator Caldera is dominated by subaqueous effusive mafic volcanic facies with local felsic effusive and intrusive deposits. With the incorporation of structural data, we have used synvolcanic faults and dyke complexes to divide these facies into specific blocks within this region, here renamed the Rouyn–Pelletier sector. This study focuses on the facies and characteristics of the Pelletier, Senator, and Glenwood blocks and identifies the Évain, Stadacona, and Chadbourne blocks. Geochronological analysis reveals that facies of the Glenwood Block are approximately the same age as those of the felsic flows of the previously identified Horne Block. Together, all extrusive and intrusive volcanic facies from the Stadacona unit north to the Horne Creek fault compose a large caldera complex known as the Rouyn–Pelletier Caldera Complex.

Silica-rich Precambrian rocks often preserve geochemical information and microfossil remnants from the early biosphere and could play a critical role in the formation of early crust. Because these rocks are important geochemical and paleontological archives, we need to better constrain their geochemical and isotopic attributes and generate a refined picture of the evolving Archean silica cycle. Here, we investigate a series of sub- to greenschist facies Si-rich Archean rocks from the ~ 2.7 Ga Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada, that represent chemical sedimentary rocks and rocks formed via silica-addition through the process of silicification. We report data for major and trace element geochemistry, multi-crystal silicon and oxygen isotopes of quartz using isotope ratio mass spectrometry, and texture-specific silicon isotope values measured using secondary ion mass spectrometry on Neoarchean chemical sedimentary rocks, their silicified equivalents, and associated silicified volcanic rocks. We find that in such a well-preserved terrane we can utilize petrographic textures and geochemical attributes to establish rock origin, distinguishing siliceous rocks that form via chemical sedimentation from those that form via silicification. Chemical sedimentary rocks display a wide range of 30Si-depleted silicon isotopes values that vary with stratigraphy similar to other Archean iron formation. Silicified volcanic rocks possess 30Si-enriched values, similar to Archean silicified basalts. We conclude that because silicon isotope values of iron formation shift toward 30Si-enriched values up stratigraphy, basinal changes in the composition of the silicon isotope reservoir may be preserved. Silicon isotope values of silicified volcanic rocks by contrast, likely represent precipitation from an isotopically heavy silicon reservoir, influenced by downward percolating seawater and upward moving convecting fluids interacting with host volcanic rock (basalt or andesite). Overall, we confirm that Neoarchean silicified rocks are 30Si-enriched like their Paleoarchean counterparts.

We present a procedure for the determination of the isotopic ratios of silicon and oxygen from the same aliquot of anhydrous silicate material. The sample is placed in a bromine pentafluoride atmosphere as it is heated with a CO2 laser system releasing silicon tetrafluoride and oxygen gasses. The oxygen gas is then purified to remove other reaction by-products through several liquid nitrogen traps before being captured onto a molecular sieve and transferred to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The silicon tetrafluoride gas is then purified using a supplementary line by repeatedly freezing to -196°C with liquid nitrogen and then thawing with an ethanol slurry at -110°C through a series of metal and Pyrex traps. The purified gas is then condensed into a Pyrex sample tube before it is transferred to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer for silicon isotope ratio measurements. This system has silicon yields of greater than 90% for pure quartz, olivine, and garnet standards and has a reproducibility of ±0.1‰ (2σ) for pure quartz for both oxygen and silicon isotope measurements. Meteoritic samples were also successfully analyzed to demonstrate this system's ability to measure the isotopic ratio composition of bulk powders with precision. This unique technique allows for the fluorination of planetary material without the need for wet chemistry. Though designed to analyze small aliquots of meteoritic material (1.5 to 3 mg), this approach can also be used to investigate refractory terrestrial samples where traditional fluorination is not suitable.

Here we provide the first high-resolution geochemical evidence for microbial metabolism to be preserved in impact-generated materials. This study is unique as not only do we merge complimentary analytical techniques such as high-resolution spectromicroscopy to assess the biogenicity of tubules in impact glasses, but we compare these results to those from co-occurring abiotic quench crystallites as an intrinsic negative control. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) at the Fe L 3 - and C K-edges revealed iron speciation patterns and organic C associated with tubular features in the impact glass. The high spatial resolution of STXM combined with NEXAFS allowed organic carbon to be localized to the tubule features. The fine energy resolution of NEXAFS allowed for unique populations of organic carbon to be spectrally differentiated between the tubule features and the matrix. The distinct and systematic variation in iron redox states observed is consistent with microbially mediated dissimilatory iron reduction. The Ries tubules comprise the first trace fossil preserved in a substrate unique to the impact process, thus illustrating the potential for microbial metabolism to be preserved in impact materials.

In this paper, we describe the discovery and characterization of shelled structures that occur inside galleries of Pyrenees mines. The structures are formed by the mineralization of iron and zinc oxides, dominantly franklinite (ZnFe2O4) and poorly ordered goethite (α-FeO(OH)). Subsurface oxidation and hydration of polymetallic sulfide orebodies produce solutions rich in dissolved metal cations including Fe2+/3+ and Zn2+. The microbially precipitated shell-like structure grows by lateral or vertical stacking of thin laminae of iron oxide particles which are accreted mostly by fungal filaments. The resulting structures are composed of randomly oriented aggregates of needle-like, uniform-sized crystals, suggesting some biological control in the structure formation. Such structures are formed by the integration of two separated shells, following a complex process driven likely by different strategies of fungal microorganisms that produced the complex macrostructure.

Under acidic, weathering conditions, silver (Ag) is considered to be highly mobile and can be dispersed within near-surface environments. In this study, a range of regolith materials were sampled from three abandoned open pit mines located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Spain. Samples were analyzed for Ag mineralogy, content, and distribution using micro-analytical techniques and high-resolution electron microscopy. While Ag concentrations were variable within these materials, elevated Ag concentrations occurred in gossans. The detection of Ag within younger regolith materials, i.e., terrace iron formations and mine soils, indicated that Ag cycling was a continuous process. Microbial microfossils were observed within crevices of gossan and their presence highlights the preservation of mineralized cells and the potential for biogeochemical processes contributing to metal mobility in the rock record. An acidophilic, iron-oxidizing microbial consortium was enriched from terrace iron formations. When the microbial consortium was exposed to dissolved Ag, more than 90% of Ag precipitated out of solution as argentojarosite. In terms of biogeochemical Ag cycling, this demonstrates that Ag re-precipitation processes may occur rapidly in comparison to Ag dissolution processes. The kinetics of Ag mobility was estimated for each type of regolith material. Gossans represented 0.6–146.7 years of biogeochemical Ag cycling while terrace iron formation and mine soils represented 1.9–42.7 years and 0.7–1.6 years of Ag biogeochemical cycling, respectively. Biogeochemical processes were interpreted from the chemical and structural characterization of regolith material and demonstrated that Ag can be highly dispersed throughout an acidic, weathering environment.
