ACADEMY Awards ,MOTION picture actors & actresses ,PARTIES ,MOTION picture awards - Abstract
The article looks at the post-Academy Award parties. Forget the fancy frocks. "The Governors Ball is one of the most beautiful things about the Academy Awards," declared Marcia Gay Harden. "There's food!" After sitting through the nearly four-hour ceremony, hungry hobbits and other famished film stars streamed into the Kodak Theatre's Grand Ballroom to fill up before heading out. How do you cater a sit-down meal at Mortons for 150 of Oscar's intimate friends? For a start, engage Patrick Woodroffe, who designed the lighting for Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee concerts at Buckingham Palace. Vanity Fair's famously eclectic mix included civilians, stars and even a moon-walker, astronaut Buzz Aldrin. After the final envelope is opened and the last agent thanked, every celebrity has a plan--and most of those plans include Vanity Fair's top-line do, a tough ticket that draws a rich mix of the famous from showbiz and beyond. With the adrenaline still flowing like champagne, and the champagne flowing like water, Oscar laureates Charlize Theron, Sean Penn, Renee Zellweger and Tim Robbins mixed and mingled--and stargazed just like everyone else.

We solve the biggest head-scratchers of the show in our guide to this year's Oscar mysteries. Who is John Carrabino, the man whom Renee Zellweger thanked so effusively while accepting her Best Supporting Actress award? "My beloved John Carrabino," as Zellweger called him, is the star's longtime manager. After her turn in 1994's "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre," he helped her land a little film called "Jerry Maguire." An ever grateful Zellweger told James Lipton last year that it was Carrabino who "just thought, for some reason, that I should be in a movie with Tom Cruise. It didn't seem to occur to anybody else, but it did to him." Did Jack Black and Will Ferrell get paid by Del Taco for their song "You're Boring"? Alas, Black is disappointed to report that he and Ferrell received no money for name-dropping the popular Mexican fastfood restaurant in their ditty about excruciatingly long-winded acceptance speeches. (Sample lyric: "You're boring/Look at Catherine Zeta-Jones, she's snoring.") The ballad culminated with a soaring chorus of "You could have rushed up to the stage, but you were lollygagging/They're turning off your microphone and cutting to a commercial for Del Taco!" "They gave me nothing," says Black, who cowrote the lyrics with Ferrell. "But I assume I'll be getting a lifetime's worth of free tacos now."

In this special foldout section, [photographer Kevin Mazur] shares a decade's worth of memories (along with some celebrity dish). Madonna on the red carpet in '98: Madonna is hamming it up for me. She cleared the way so I could get a nice full-length shot. Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Miramax party in '03: "Wow! To be so far into her pregnancy, still look that amazing and win to boot. That was a total home run." Elton John & Elizabeth Hurley at Elton John's party in '00: They're good friends, and Elton's really playful at his parties. Liz was surprised here, but she is so beautiful you can't take a bad picture of her.

ACADEMY Awards ,AWARD presentations ,CELEBRITIES ,ENTERTAINING - Abstract
From power dinners to dancing at dawn, here's Oscar weekend from the celeb's eye view. Table hopping: Among the A-list diners at Beverly Hills eatery Mr. Chow on Friday night: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson with designer Tom Ford; Elton John; and designers Vera Wang and Richard Tyler. The doughnut diet: Las Vegas star Molly Sims indulged in the self-serve Krispy Kreme bar at Jeffrey Katzenberg's annual Night Before charity bash on Saturday: "It was like sundaes," she says. "You could do M&Ms and fudge." Thanks, Mom: At the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, Whale Rider's Keisha Castle-Hughes, 13, made plans to stave off hunger during the Oscar telecast: "I would like to take a burger, but my mom said I am not allowed. She said I have to take some nuts and raisins." (Faye Dunaway had no such restrictions: During the Oscar ceremony, she strode through the theater lobby munching from a box of Chinese chicken salad.).

ACADEMY Awards ,AWARD presentations ,CELEBRITIES ,FASHION ,DRESSES ,FASHION accessories ,DESIGNERS - Abstract
This section describes the gowns and fashion accessories worn by celebrities at the Academy Awards ceremony. Designer Vera Wang, for one, was predicting some Academy Awards zing. "Everybody's been so elegant and classical," she said. "I think this year people are going to take chances." Not after watching Janet Jackson's sunburst at the Super Bowl they weren't. Opting for chic over shock, most stars chose couture that clung to--but did not excessively bare--curves. Elegant beat edgy, and vintage was au courant: Jennifer Garner turned up in vintage Valentino, while Samantha Morton chose vintage Givenchy. And (relatively) tasteful ice was much in evidence--from the 3-carat stone in Sting's necktie to the 1,500 diamonds in Charlize Theron's clutch. Still, Hollywood did not allow good taste to ruin the evening's fun. Swashbuckler Johnny Depp balanced his trademark cool with a brightly colored Band-Aid on his finger, given to him by his 4-year-old daughter Lily-Rose. And Jamie Lee Curtis decided against a long-sleeve black dress in favor of a bright-blue strapless gown. Why? "I felt like celebrating brave choices."

GASTRIC bypass ,WEIGHT loss ,STOMACH surgery - Abstract
This article focuses on the weight lost by "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson since undergoing gastric bypass surgery in July 2003. Jackson, 47, is the latest high-profile patient to reap dramatic results from the last-resort gastric-bypass surgery that transformed celebrities including the "Today" show's Al Roker and singer Carnie Wilson. Striking a note of joviality on Idol--a much-needed balance between Simon Cowell's nasty and Paula Abdul's nice--Jackson liked to refer to himself as" pleasantly large," often joked about a career modeling Speedo swimsuits.

Two winners stayed home, another was booed, and a certain Iraqi dictator got cut from the act. If you missed all this, here's our Q&A guide to a most intriguing telecast of the Academy Awards. Why didn't Renée Zellweger sing the Chicago number? In the movie, Best Song nominee "I Move On" is performed by Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Yet Zellweger decided weeks before the ceremony that she wasn't going to perform on the telecast. During Nicole Kidman's emotional Best Actress acceptance speech, she tearfully praised her mother, Janelle, and daughter Isabella, 10, but left out her dad, Antony, who was sitting with the family. Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Tatum O'Neal all were accompanied by their little girls, while Kidman, Adrien Brody and Queen Latifah brought their proud parents as dates.

What's it really like to be a star during Oscars week? To find out, America Online asked a few to document their doings; the resulting photographs are posted online through March 31, 2003. (For each shot used, AOL is making a donation to U2 singer Bono's charity DATA, which fights poverty and AIDS in Africa.) Meryl Streep captured herself mugging with Oscar joke writer Bruce Vilanch, Diane Lane shot her Best Documentary Feature presenter's speech, Adrien Brody posed with just about everyone. But Colin Farrell, living up to his reputation as Hollywood's hardest partyer, got the liveliest shots.

In a town where understatement is a foreign language, dressing for the Academy Awards triggered a flurry of second thoughts. When the traditional long red-carpet stroll was canceled,Hollywood collected backup outfits in muted tones and shuddered over the prospect of pant suits. Most stars chose the luscious gowns and the luxurious gems, but when in doubt, they downsized. Presenter Diane Lane attends rehearsal at the Kodak Theatre. Just three hours until showtime, and Jennifer Lopez still hasn't decided what she'll wear. Stopping short of full-on glamor, Renee Zellweger wore just one vintage Neil Lane ruby ring with her embroidered silk chiffon Carolina Herrera dress.

PETS , *DOMESTIC animals , *CRISIS management , *DOGS - Abstract
Describes how pets saved their human owners from disasters and violence. In March of 1998 John Schonefeld was walking his shepherd Nikita in his apartment complex parking lot when he found himself in the middle of an urban nightmare. A man in a red ski cap carrying a gun jumped out of a passing car and lunged at him. Police later told Schonefeld that the bullet had ricocheted off the dog's skull before piercing a sidewalk nearby. Then, Ammie, 15, the oldest of Carol and Paul Ingram's five children, was home alone when smoke began filling the family's two-story house in Surrey, England. How the family's pet parrot, Gem, prevented a fire. When a stray cat began hanging out on the deck at Daniele and Dan Kates's house in Lisbon Falls, Maine, the couple didn't want it sticking around. On Jan. 12, 1999 Daniele was making lunch for her then 4-year-old twins Jordan and Benjamin when she heard the cat crying and pawing the upstairs master bedroom door. Daniele discovered the bedroom engulfed in smoke and flames shooting out of the closet. All escaped unharmed, and news of Muffin's heroism spread; in March 1999 she was named Cat of the Year by a division of the International Cat Association.

The article is a first-person account by the wife of a director about what it is like to attend the Academy Awards presentation when you are not the nominee and are not famous. Imagine your worst humiliation. Now imagine that feeling squared. That's what it's like to be a red-carpet widow. I am a normal person. But I am married to someone who lives half his life in an abnormal world--a world where beautiful people cavort and the wine flows like Evian, which flows like Fiji Water. My husband is a film producer--an Academy Award-winning film producer. As a pair, we've attended numerous premieres, countless black-tie events, several Golden Globes and two Oscar shows. And each time, I am reminded that I am a nobody. You have no idea how much effort it takes to be a nobody. Two years ago, when my husband, Brian Grazer, was nominated for Best Picture for "A Beautiful Mind," after I congratulated him, tears of joy running down my face (perhaps because it was 5:30 in the morning), I was seized by another, even stronger emotion: abject fear. What was I going to wear? And how was I going to fit in that thing I was going to wear? Who would do my hair? How does one go about getting hair that one wants done? Who would do my makeup? Who would do my plastic surgery? See, even though I am a card-carrying member of the Society of Nobodies, I am just as vain as the next green-light movie star.

ACADEMY Awards ,PARTIES ,MOTION picture awards ,ENTERTAINING ,CELEBRITIES ,ACTORS - Abstract
So much attention was focused on whether the Oscar ceremony would actually take place that some stars weren't sure what to do when it ended. As 1,650 guests streamed into the black-and-white ballroom, Josh Brolin tried in vain to coax girlfriend Diane Lane onto the dance floor ("I know you want to," he said, laughing). Meanwhile Jon Voight chased down Cuba Gooding Jr. to share a few stories about playing flag football with his neighbor Mark Wahlberg. Stars filled their plates at the In-N-Out Burger mobile kitchen, and Julianne Moore downed Heineken straight from the bottle. Queen Latifah had to charm Vanity Fair organizers into admitting her two Harry Winston-assigned security guards, who were protecting Latifah's $3.5 million worth of Winston diamonds.
