Abstract

Half-lifes (T1/2) of exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Ba, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd were measured at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The experimental setup consisted of the BigRIPS in-flight separator for ion selection identification, the Advance Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) for ions and β detection, and the BRIKEN detector for neutron counting. Using this setup, 4 new T1/2 have been measured for the first time, and 38 T1/2 have been remeasured with improved precision in several cases. These new experimental data should help to constrain theoretical models for calculations of T1/2. The status of the experimental analysis and preliminary results are provided in this contribution.

Abstract

At the RIKEN Nishina Center, exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Ba, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd were measured. This work reports their half-lives (T1/2) and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities (Pxn). The setup consisted of the BigRIPS in-flight separator for particle identification, the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) for ions and β detection, and the BRIKEN neutron counter for neutron detection. Using this arrangement, 4 new T1/2 and 14 new P1n were measured. Furthermore, 38 T1/2 and 2 P1n values were remeasured, decreasing the uncertainties for some of them. In addition to improving predictions of nucleosynthesis models that describe the production of the rare-earth peak at A ∼ 160 via the r-process, these additional experimental data should help to constrain theoretical models for calculations of T1/2 and Pxn in this region.

3. The first-order structural phase transition at low-temperature in GaPt$_{5}$P and its rapid enhancement with pressure

Abstract

Single crystals of XPt$_{5}$P (X = Al, Ga, and In) were grown from a Pt-P solution at high temperatures, and ambient-pressure measurements of temperature-dependent magnetization, resistivity, and X-ray diffraction were made. Also, the ambient-pressure Hall resistivity and temperature-dependent resistance under pressure were measured on GaPt$_{5}$P. All three compounds have tetragonal $P4/mmm$ crystal structure at room-temperature with metallic transport and weak diamagnetism over the $2-300$~K temperature range. Surprisingly, at ambient pressure, both the transport and magnetization measurements on GaPt$_{5}$P show a step-like feature in $70-90$~K region suggesting a possible structural phase transition, and no such features were observed in (Al/In)Pt$_{5}$P. Both the hysteretic nature and sharpness of the feature suggest the first-order transition, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements provided further details of the structural transition with a crystal symmetry likely different than $P4/mmm$ below transition. The transition is characterized by anisotropic changes in the lattice parameters, a volume collapse, and satellite peaks at two distinct wave-vectors. Density functional theory calculations present phonon softening as a possible driving mechanism. Additionally, the structural transition temperature increases rapidly with increasing pressure, reaching room temperature by $\sim 2.2$~GPa, highlighting the high degree of pressure sensitivity and fragile nature of GaPt$_{5}$P room-temperature structure. Although the volume collapse and extreme pressure sensitivity suggest chemical pressure should drive a similar structural change in AlPt$_{5}$P, with smaller unit cell dimensions and volume, its structure is found to be $P4/mmm$ as well. Overall, GaPt$_{5}$P stands out as a sole member of the 1-5-1 family of compounds with a temperature-driven structural change., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in 213Tl and 874(5) keV in 215Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in 213Tl and 3.0(3) ms in 215Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2- with the single proton-hole configuration h11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single s1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the (A+1)Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2- states is ascribed to an increase of the h11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second g9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the h11/2 and g9/2 orbitals. The new ms-isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly-magic 208Pb., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The commissioning of a new setup for β-delayed neutron measurements was carried out successfully in November-2016, at the RIKEN Nishina Center in Japan. The β-decay half-lives and Pn branching ratios of several isotopes in the 78Ni region were measured. Details of the experimental setup and the first results are given.

Abstract

We measured the $^{57}$Zn $\beta$-delayed proton ($\beta$p) and $\gamma$ emission at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. We find a $^{57}$Zn half-life of 43.6 $\pm$ 0.2 ms, $\beta$p branching ratio of (84.7 $\pm$ 1.4)%, and identify four transitions corresponding to the exotic $\beta$-$\gamma$-$p$ decay mode, the second such identification in the $f p$-shell. The $p/\gamma$ ratio was used to correct for isospin mixing while determining the $^{57}$Zn mass via the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Previously, it was uncertain as to whether the rp-process flow could bypass the textbook waiting point $^{56}$Ni for astrophysical conditions relevant to Type-I X-ray bursts. Our results definitively establish the existence of the $^{56}$Ni bypass, with 14-17% of the $rp$-process flow taking this route.

Abstract

A new detection system has been installed at the RIKEN Nishina Center (Japan) to investigate decay properties of very neutron-rich nuclei. The setup consists of three main parts: a moderated neutron counter, a detection system sensitive to the implantation and decay of radioactive ions, and gamma-ray detectors. We describe here the setup, the commissioning experiment and some selected results demonstrating its performance for the measurement of half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities. The methodology followed in the analysis of the data is described in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the correction of the accidental neutron background.

Abstract

Many choices are available in order to evaluate large radioactive decay networks. %multi-particle decay data. There are many parameters that influence the calculated $\beta$-decay delayed single and multi-neutron emission branching fractions. We describe assumptions about the decay model, background, and other parameters and their influence on $\beta$-decay delayed multi-neutron emission analysis. An analysis technique, the ORNL BRIKEN analysis procedure, for determining $\beta$-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios in $\beta$-neutron precursors produced by means of heavy-ion fragmentation is presented. The technique is based on estimating the initial activities of zero, one, and two neutrons occurring in coincidence with an ion-implant and $\beta$ trigger. The technique allows one to extract $\beta$-delayed multi-neutron decay branching ratios measured with the hybrid \textsuperscript{3}He BRIKEN neutron counter. As an example, two analyses of the $\beta$-neutron emitter \textsuperscript{77}Cu based on different {\it a priori} assumptions are presented along with comparisons to literature values., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

•In our letter, we address the dominant uncertainty regarding the extent of the rp-process flow bypass around Ni56 waiting point for astrophysical conditions relevant to Type-1 X-ray bursts.•We removed the final significant uncertainty, the beta-delayed proton branching ratio for Zn57, definitively determining that there is a Ni56 bypass.•In addition, we also identified the second case of the exotic β−γ−p decay mode in the fp-shell.

Abstract

We demonstrate the epitaxial growth of (111)-oriented Sr1 − xCaxTiO3 (SCTO) thin films on (0002) GaN using a thin (100) TiO2 buffer layer by RF-plasma-assisted oxide molecular beam epitaxy. We explore the growth window of SCTO for both x = 0 (i.e., SrTiO3) and x = 0.24 with various TiO2 buffer layer thicknesses and find that a substrate temperature of 650 °C and TiO2 thickness of 1 nm produce the highest quality films, as determined by reflection high energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. SCTO films deposited without a buffer layer are polycrystalline, confirming the necessity of the TiO2 buffer layer to facilitate (111)-oriented epitaxial growth of SCTO on GaN. Transmission electron microscopy performed on the samples shows that the SCTO films grown with a TiO2 buffer layer are highly textured, and selected-area electron diffraction patterns indicate that some domains in the oxide exhibit cation ordering along the (111) direction. We also show that the growth mode changes from 2D to 3D as the thickness of SCTO increases past 10 nm, which leads to film relaxation and a rougher surface morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nuclei of interest were produced by in-flight fission of a U-238 beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. The isomer depopulates through a gamma ray of energy 56.7(1) keV and with a half-life of T-1/2 = 3.5(4) mu s. Based on the comparison with shell-model calculations, we interpret the isomer as the I-pi = 5(-) member of the pi 0g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu 1f(7/2)(3) multiplet, decaying to the I-pi = 7(-) ground state with a reduced-transition probability of B(E2; 5(-) -> 7(-)) = 0.53(6) W.u. Abstract

GaN thin films codoped with Eu and Si were grown on sapphire by solid source molecular beam epitaxy technique. Si incorporation changed GaN:Eu thin films from highly resistive to n-type conductive but not to levels normally achieved in conventional Si-doped GaN films. The magnetic properties of the codoped GaN films were measured by an alternating gradient magnetometer. While all samples exhibited hysteresis behavior at room temperature, there was a marked dependence on the Si codoping. At low-to-moderate Si doping levels, an increase up to approximately nine times in saturation magnetization was observed for films having higher conductivity, which also displayed an anomalous Hall effect. Under illumination at 371 nm, an increase in saturation magnetization was observed for all samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
