E-TEST (Einstein Telescope Euregio-Meuse-Rhin Site and Technology) is a project recently funded by the European program Ineterreg Euregio Meuse-Rhine. This program is dedicated to innovative cross boarder activities between Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. With a total budget of15MC and a consortium of 11 partners from the three countries, the objective of the project is twofold. Firstly, to develop an eco-friendly and non-invasive imaging of the geological conditions as well as the development of an observatory of the underground in the EMR region. Secondly, to develop technologies necessary for 3rd generation gravitational wave detectors. In particular, it is proposed to develop a prototype of large suspended cryogenic silicon mirror, isolated from seismic vibrations at low frequency. The total budget of the project is equally spread over the two activities. The first activity is not discussed at all in this report. The E-TEST prototype will have some key unique features: a silicon mirror of 100 kg, a radiative cooling strategy (non contact), a low-frequency hybrid isolation stage, cryogenic sensors and electronics, a laser and optics at 2 microns, a low thermal noise coating.

With the advent of quantum technology, nitrogen vacancy ($NV$) centers in diamond turn out to be a frontier which provides an efficient platform for quantum computation, communication and sensing applications. Due to the coupled spin-charge dynamics of the $NV$ system, knowledge about $NV$ charge state dynamics can help to formulate efficient spin control sequences strategically. Through this paper we report two spectroscopy-based deconvolution methods to create charge state mapping images of ensembles of $NV$ centers in diamond. First, relying on the fact that an off axis external magnetic field mixes the electronic spins and selectively modifies the photoluminescence (PL) of $NV^-$, we perform decomposition of the optical spectrum for an ensemble of $NV$s and extract the spectra for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$ states. Next, we introduce an optical filter based decomposition protocol and perform PL imaging for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$. Earlier obtained spectra for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$ states are used to calculate their transmissivities through a long pass optical filter. These results help us to determine the spatial distribution of the $NV$ charge states in a diamond sample., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

There is a continuous search for solid-state spin qubits operating at room temperature with excitation in the IR communication bandwidth. Recently we have introduced the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonance (PDMR) to read the electron spin state of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a technique which is promising for applications in quantum information technology. By measuring photoionization spectra on a diamond crystal we found two ionization thresholds that were not reported before. On the same sample we also observed absorption and photoluminescence signatures that were identified in literature as Ni associated defects. We performed \emph{ab initio} calculation of the photo-ionization cross-section of the nickel split vacancy complex (NiV) and N-related defects in their relevant charge states and fitted the concentration of these defects to the measured photocurrent spectrum, which led to a surprising match between experimental and calculated spectra. This study enabled to identify the two unknown ionization thresholds with the two acceptor levels of NiV. Because the excitation of NiV is in infrared, the photocurrent detected from the paramagnetic NiV color centers is a promising way towards designing a novel type of electrically readout qubits., Comment: 3 figures, 2 tables

The core issue for the implementation of the diamond NV centre qubits technology is the sensitive readout of NV spin state. We have recently demonstrated the photoelectric detection of NV magnetic resonances (PDMR), anticipated to be faster and more sensitive than optical detection (ODMR). Here we report on a PDMR contrast of 9 % - three times enhanced compared to previous work - on shallow N-implanted diamond. Based on ab-initio modelling, we demonstrate a novel one-photon ionization dual-beam PDMR protocol. We predict that this scheme is significantly less vulnerable to the influence of defects such as substitutional nitrogen., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

The protocols for the control and readout of Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centres electron spins in diamond offer an advanced platform for quantum computation, metrology and sensing. These protocols are based on the optical readout of photons emitted from NV centres, which process is limited by the yield of photons collection. Here we report on a novel principle for the detection of NV centres magnetic resonance in diamond by directly monitoring spin-preserving electron transitions through measurement of NV centre related photocurrent. The demonstrated direct detection technique offers a sensitive way for the readout of diamond NV sensors and diamond quantum devices on diamond chips. The Photocurrent Detection of Magnetic Resonance (PDMR) scheme is based on the detection of charge carriers promoted to the conduction band of diamond by the two-photon ionization of NV- centres. Optical detection of magnetic resonance (ODMR) and PDMR are compared, by performing both measurements simultaneously. The minima detected in the measured photocurrent at resonant microwave frequencies are attributed to the spin-dependent occupation probability of the NV- ground state, originating from spin-selective non-radiative transitions., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A high-current annealing technique is used to fabricate nanogaps and hybrid diamond/graphite structures in boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond films. Nanometer-sized gaps down to 1 nm are produced using a feedback-controlled current annealing procedure. The nanogaps are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electronic transport measurements. The structural changes produced by the elevated temperature, achieved by Joule heating during current annealing, are characterized using Raman spectroscopy. The formation of hybridized diamond/graphite structure is observed at the point of maximum heat accumulation., Comment: 14 pages 4 figures + 1 supplemental figure
