One of the most important objectives of solar physics is the physical understanding of the solar atmosphere, the structure of which is also described in terms of the density (N) and temperature (T) distributions of the atmospheric matter. Several multi-frequency analyses show that the characteristics of these distributions are still debated, especially for the outer coronal emission. We aim to constrain the T and N distributions of the solar atmosphere through observations in the centimetric radio domain. We employ single-dish observations from two of the INAF radio telescopes at the K-band frequencies (18 - 26 GHz). We investigate the origin of the significant brightness temperature ($T_B$) level that we detected up to the upper corona ($\sim 800$ Mm of altitude with respect to the photospheric solar surface). To probe the physical origin of the atmospheric emission and to constrain instrumental biases, we reproduced the solar signal by convolving specific 2D antenna beam models. The analysis of the solar atmosphere is performed by adopting a physical model that assumes the thermal bremsstrahlung as the emission mechanism, with specific T and N distributions. The modelled $T_B$ profiles are compared with those observed by averaging solar maps obtained during the minimum of solar activity (2018 - 2020). The T and N distributions are compatible (within $25\%$ of uncertainty) with the model up to $\sim 60$ Mm and $\sim 100$ Mm of altitude, respectively. The analysis of the role of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps proves the physical nature of the atmospheric emission in our images up to the coronal tails seen in our $T_B$ profiles. The Sun is an extraordinary workbench, from which several fundamental astronomical parameters can be measured with high precision. Among these parameters, the solar radius $R_{\odot}$ plays an important role in several aspects, such as in evolutionary models. Despite the efforts in obtaining accurate measurements of $R_{\odot}$, the subject is still debated and measurements are puzzling and/or lacking in many frequency ranges. We aimed to determine the mean, equatorial, and polar radii of the Sun ($R_c$, $R_{eq}$, and $R_{pol}$) in the frequency range 18.1 - 26.1 GHz. We employed single-dish observations from the newly-appointed Medicina "Gavril Grueff" Radio Telescope and the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) throughout 5 years, from 2018 to mid-2023, in the framework of the SunDish project for solar monitoring. Two methods to calculate the radius at radio frequencies are considered and compared. To assess the quality of our radius determinations, we also analysed the possible degrading effects of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps, using two 2D-models. We carried out a correlation analysis with the evolution of the solar cycle through the calculation of Pearson's correlation coefficient $\rho$. We obtained several values for the solar radius - ranging between 959 and 994 arcsec - and $\rho$, with typical errors of a few arcsec. Our $R_{\odot}$ measurements, consistent with values reported in literature, suggest a weak prolatness of the solar limb ($R_{eq}$ > $R_{pol}$), although $R_{eq}$ and $R_{pol}$ are statistically compatible within 3$\sigma$ errors. The correlation analysis using the solar images from Grueff shows (1) a positive correlation between the solar activity and the temporal variation of $R_c$ (and $R_{eq}$) at all observing frequencies, and (2) a weak anti-correlation between the temporal variation of $R_{pol}$ and the solar activity at 25.8 GHz., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted by A&A; v1

ALMA has been operating since 2011, but has not yet been populated with the full suite of intended frequency bands. In particular, ALMA Band 2 (67-90 GHz) is the final band in the original ALMA band definition to be approved for production. We aim to produce a wideband, tuneable, sideband-separating receiver with 28 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth per polarisation operating in the sky frequency range 67-116 GHz. Our design anticipates new ALMA requirements following the recommendations in the 2030 ALMA Development Roadmap. The cryogenic cartridge is designed to be compatible with the ALMA Band 2 cartridge slot, where the coldest components -- the feedhorns, orthomode transducers, and cryogenic low noise amplifiers -- operate at a temperature of 15 K. We use multiple simulation methods and tools to optimise our designs for both the passive optics and the active components. The cryogenic cartridge interfaces with a room temperature cartridge hosting the local oscillator (LO) and the downconverter module. This warm cartridge is largely based on GaAs semiconductor technology and is optimised to match the cryogenic receiver bandwidth with the required instantaneous LO tuning range. Our collaboration has designed, fabricated, and tested multiple technical solutions for each of the components, producing a state-of-the-art receiver covering the full ALMA Band 2 & 3 atmospheric window. The receiver is suitable for deployment on ALMA in the coming years, and is capable of dual-polarisation, sideband-separating observations in intermediate frequency bands spanning 4-18 GHz, for a total of 28 GHz on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel. We conclude that the 67-116 GHz wideband implementation for ALMA Band 2 is now feasible, and this receiver is a compelling instrumental upgrade that will enhance observational capabilities and scientific reach., Comment: 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A on 20 Dec 2019. The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is already revolutionising our understanding of the Universe. However, ALMA is not yet equipped with all of its originally planned receiver bands, which will allow it to observe over the full range of frequencies from 35-950 GHz accessible through the Earth's atmosphere. In particular Band 2 (67-90 GHz) has not yet been approved for construction. Recent technological developments in cryogenic monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifier and orthomode transducer (OMT) design provide an opportunity to extend the originally planned on-sky bandwidth, combining ALMA Bands 2 and 3 into one receiver cartridge covering 67-116 GHz. The IF band definition for the ALMA project took place two decades ago, when 8 GHz of on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel was an ambitious goal. The new receiver design we present here allows the opportunity to expand ALMA's wideband capabilities, anticipating future upgrades across the entire observatory. Expanding ALMA's instantaneous bandwidth is a high priority, and provides a number of observational advantages, including lower noise in continuum observations, the ability to probe larger portions of an astronomical spectrum for, e.g., widely spaced molecular transitions, and the ability to scan efficiently in frequency space to perform surveys where the redshift or chemical complexity of the object is not known a priori. Wider IF bandwidth also reduces uncertainties in calibration and continuum subtraction that might otherwise compromise science objectives. The scientific performance of the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) after one year of in-orbit operation is presented. We describe the main optical parameters and discuss photometric calibration, white noise sensitivity, and noise properties. A preliminary evaluation of the impact of the main systematic effects is presented. For each of the performance parameters, we outline the methods used to obtain them from the flight data and provide a comparison with pre-launch ground assessments, which are essentially confirmed in flight., Comment: Published version

In this paper we present the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI), designed and developed as part of the Planck space mission, the ESA program dedicated to precision imaging of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Planck-LFI will observe the full sky in intensity and polarisation in three frequency bands centred at 30, 44 and 70 GHz, while higher frequencies (100-850 GHz) will be covered by the HFI instrument. The LFI is an array of microwave radiometers based on state-of-the-art Indium Phosphide cryogenic HEMT amplifiers implemented in a differential system using blackbody loads as reference signals. The front-end is cooled to 20K for optimal sensitivity and the reference loads are cooled to 4K to minimise low frequency noise. We provide an overview of the LFI, discuss the leading scientific requirements and describe the design solutions adopted for the various hardware subsystems. The main drivers of the radiometric, optical and thermal design are discussed, including the stringent requirements on sensitivity, stability, and rejection of systematic effects. This paper provides an overview of the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) programme within the ESA Planck mission. The LFI instrument has been developed to produce high precision maps of the microwave sky at frequencies in the range 27-77 GHz, below the peak of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation spectrum. The scientific goals are described, ranging from fundamental cosmology to Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics. The instrument design and development are outlined, together with the model philosophy and testing strategy. The instrument is presented in the context of the Planck mission. The LFI approach to ground and inflight calibration is described. We also describe the LFI ground segment. We present the results of a number of tests demonstrating the capability of the LFI data processing centre (DPC) to properly reduce and analyse LFI flight data, from telemetry information to calibrated and cleaned time ordered data, sky maps at each frequency (in temperature and polarization), component emission maps (CMB and diffuse foregrounds), catalogs for various classes of sources (the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue and the Final Compact Source Catalogue). The organization of the LFI consortium is briefly presented as well as the role of the core team in data analysis and scientific exploitation. All tests carried out on the LFI flight model demonstrate the excellent performance of the instrument and its various subunits. The data analysis pipeline has been tested and its main steps verified. Context. Water vapor emission at 22 GHz from masers associated with star-forming regions is highly variable. Aims. We present a database of up to 20 years of monitoring of a sample of 43 masers within star-forming regions. The sample covers a large range of luminosities of the associated IRAS source and is representative of the entire population of H2O masers of this type. The database forms a good starting point for any further study of H2O maser variability. Methods. The observations were obtained with the Medicina 32-m radiotelescope, at a rate of 4-5 observations per year. Results. To provide a database that can be easily accessed through the web, we give for each source: plots of the calibrated spectra, the velocity-time-flux density plot, the light curve of the integrated flux, the lower and upper envelopes of the maser emission, the mean spectrum, and the rate of the maser occurrence as a function of velocity. Figures for just one source are given in the text for representative purposes. Figures for all the sources are given in electronic form in the on-line appendix. We report on the design, fabrication and testing of a set of high performance corrugated feed horns at 30 GHz, 70 GHz and 100 GHz, built as advanced prototypes for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the ESA Planck mission. The electromagnetic designs include linear (100 GHz) and dual shaped (30 and 70 GHz) profiles. Fabrication has been achieved by direct machining at 30 GHz, and by electro-formation at higher frequencies. The measured performances on side lobes and return loss meet the stringent Planck requirements over the large (20%) instrument bandwidth. Moreover, the advantage in terms of main lobe shape and side lobes levels of the dual profiled designs has been demonstrated., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

The study of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies represents one of the most powerful Cosmological tools. After the great success of the two NASA's satellite missions COBE and WMAP, Planck represents the third generation of mm-wave instruments designed for space observations of CMB anisotropies within the new Cosmic Vision 2020 ESA Science Programme. The Planck survey will cover the whole sky with unprecedented sensitivity, angular resolution and frequency coverage, using two instruments that share the focal region of a 1.5 m off-axis dual reflector telescope: the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and the High Frequency Instrument (HFI). Within the LFI optical interfaces optimisation activity, two concurrent demands have to be satisfied: the best angular resolution (which impacts the ability to reconstruct the anisotropy power spectrum of the CMB anisotropies at high multipoles) and the lowest level of straylight contamination (that may be one of the most critical sources of systematic effects). We present the results of the optical simulations aimed to establish the trade-off between angular resolution and straylight rejection, carried out for the 100 GHz channel of Planck Low Frequency Instrument. Antenna pattern of different models of dual profiled corrugated conical feed horns have been simulated using advanced simulation techniques, considering the whole spacecraft geometry in order to obtain truthful sidelobe predictions. Optical computation accuracy necessary to provide strong straylight evaluation in reasonable computational time is shown and the inadequacy of a Gaussian feed model in realistic far pattern predictions is demonstrated. BaR-SPOrt (Balloon-borne Radiometers for Sky Polarisation Observations) is an experiment to measure the linearly polarized emission of sky patches at 32 and 90 GHz with sub-degree angular resolution. It is equipped with high sensitivity correlation polarimeters for simultaneous detection of both the U and Q stokes parameters of the incident radiation. On-axis telescope is used to observe angular scales where the expected polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMBP) peaks. This project shares most of the know-how and sophisticated technology developed for the SPOrt experiment onboard the International Space Station. The payload is designed to flight onboard long duration stratospheric balloons both in the Northern and Southern hemispheres where low foreground emission sky patches are accessible. Due to the weakness of the expected CMBP signal (in the range of microK), much care has been spent to optimize the instrument design with respect to the systematics generation, observing time efficiency and long term stability.
