The breeding population of birds are dynamic and are affected by multiple factors including climate and local environmental conditions. However, often to understand such relations requires long-term data modelling. Such long-term population data is either lacking or has data gaps. This study demonstrates the use of Multiple Imputation Chained Equation (MICE) to overcome the problem of missing data population census. This is also the first comprehensive study, modelling the 36-year (1980-2015) long-term breeding population data of a near-threatened bird, Painted Stork, from Keoladeo National Park, India. It tests the effect of local water availability, i.e., water released to the park, and regional rainfall, i.e, climatic condition, on the breeding population using Generalised Additive Model (GAM). Both imputation and observed data series-based GAM models identified the local water availability as the most important factor influencing the breeding population of Painted Stork. More than 80% population decline was observed, despite a slight increase in the rainfall at regional scale, suggesting local hydrological conditions are limiting to the breeding population and not the climate. According to the visual assessment of partial plot of GAM, minimum 200-300 million cubic feet of water is needed each nesting season to ensure sustenance of breeding population. Post-1989, the breeding population was unable to match the long-term mean (~726) except in 1992, 1995, and 1996. The maximum decline was observed between 2000-2009, a decade of frequent droughts. The breeding population was stable until the end of this study, but it was far below the long term mean.

During the nesting season, green turtles have an instinct to return to their original place to lay their eggs. The success of turtle egg laying is influenced by the suitability of the beach for their nesting habitat which consists of physical and biological factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the suitability of the physical and biological factors of green turtle nesting habitat and its relationship to the number of green turtles landed at each station. The research method used is observation, the observation station is determined by purposive sampling, and the data analysis technique used is quantitative. The result is that physical and biological factors consisting of beach width and slope, sand texture and temperature, and vegetation at each landing station on Pangumbahan beach are still suitable as green turtle nesting sites except station 6. There were 47 green turtles that landed, and station 2 has the highest number of turtles landing, which is 16 turtles. Meanwhile, at station 6, no turtles landed. From the results of the correlation analysis, the beach slope factor and the vegetation density factor have a very strong and significant relationship with the number of turtles that landed. As for the other factors have a fairly - strong relationship. The conclusion is that all factors, both physical and biological factors from the beach, affect the number of green turtles that land, as evidenced by the relationship between the two variables.

Las tortugas marinas pueden ser un nicho para organismos de menor tamaño denominados epibiontes o huéspedes que no causan ningún daño a sus hospederos. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las diatomeas que habitan sobre el caparazón de hembras de la tortuga Lepidochelys olivacea durante la temporada de desove 2015-2016 en Playa Ventura, Guerrero, México. Se muestrearon un total de 46 tortugas golfinas, registrándose 20 especies y 17 géneros de diatomeas. Los géneros con mayor número de especies fueron Gomphonema (tres especies) y Cocconeis(dos especies). Los resultados indican que la adquisición y proliferación de las diatomeas no están relacionadas directamente al comportamiento de las tortugas en general; sin embargo, la comunidad de tortugas que arriba a estas playas podría presentar hábitos similares que propicien el establecimiento de estas diatomeas.

Negative interactions between people and crocodilians have increased worldwide, but in Mexico there have been few systematic reports and no rigorous evaluation of this problem. We compiled information on negative interactions between people and the spectacled caimanCaiman crocodilusand American crocodileCrocodylus acutusfrom the Worldwide Crocodilian Attack Database for 1993–2018, and we investigated interactions in greater depth, through interviews with people in La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve. We examined the relationship between the occurrence of negative interactions between people andC. acutusand the species' nesting season and abundance, and presence records. In Mexico, the frequency of negative interactions increases when anthropogenic activities occur close to nesting sites (< 30 km) and during the nesting season (February–September). In La Encrucijada, following negative interactions with crocodiles, the local inhabitants killed 30 crocodiles measuring > 2.5 m long in 2011–2012. The frequency of negative human–crocodilian interactions was not correlated with the abundance of crocodilians but was correlated with the number of presence records of crocodiles. Strategies to minimize these interactions include warnings at nesting sites, increased monitoring of anthropogenic activities during the nesting season, and management of nests to prevent them being destroyed by people.

Plumage colour variation occurs widely among bird species and is often associated with individual fitness. More specifically, colouration can affect thermoregulatory ability, mate selection and conspicuousness during foraging. Colour aberrations can be caused by genetic mutations, dietary imbalances, environmental conditions or disease and are rare. Plumage variations have previously been noted in Adélie penguins, although without any follow-up to measure implications for behaviour or fitness. To assess how this low-frequency condition affects breeding in Adélie penguins, we monitored the breeding of several colour-aberrant Adélie penguins during the 2019–2020 nesting season at the large Cape Crozier, Ross Island colony (> 300,000 pairs). In total, we found 12 individuals with unusual plumage for a frequency of 1:50,000 breeding penguins. There were seven dark brown Adélie penguins, three progressive greying Adélie penguins, one dilute Adélie penguin and one brown Adélie penguin, of which five were female, three male and four of unknown sex. Six colour aberrants initiated breeding with a normal-coloured mate, and five raised at least one chick to crèche. The likelihood of breeding and breeding success of colour aberrants were similar to those of normal-coloured Adélie penguins, suggesting that colour aberrations do not negatively affect breeding.

The American Oystercatcher, Haematopus palliatus, is a widespread shorebird in both North and South America. Despite its large distribution along the Brazilian coast, there is a paucity of breeding information about the species across this vast region. Herein, we monitored the breeding biology of the species during three consecutive breeding seasons on three sandy beaches in southern Brazil. The nesting season extended from July to January with a mode clutch size of two eggs (mean ± SD = 1.9 ± 0.6, n = 63). The majority of the nests recorded were found in the sandy dunes habitat adjacent to the beachfront, with a low cover of herbaceous native vegetation, reinforcing the importance of this habitat for the conservation of the species.

AIM: Hierarchical stream habitat conditions influence patterns of fish abundance and population dynamics. The spawning period is important for stream fishes but coincides with unpredictable environmental conditions and stressors. Thus, identifying habitats that confer suitable spawning is crucial to managing vulnerable fish populations, including narrow‐range endemics. Here, we evaluate reach‐ and catchment‐scale habitat features related to Neosho Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu velox) nest presence, abundance and aggregations (clusters) and quantify nest microhabitat. LOCATION: Ozark Highlands ecoregion, USA. METHODS: We conducted snorkel and habitat surveys from 2016 to 2018 to quantify nest abundance, describe nest cluster characteristics and quantify nest microhabitat. We used field‐collected and geospatial variables and developed generalized mixed models to evaluate the influence of multi‐scale habitat features on nest cluster presence and nest abundance. RESULTS: Nest clusters, scarcely known for other Smallmouth Bass populations, contained 25% of all documented nests. Presence of nests was more likely in warmer stream reaches with wide, shallow channels and more pool habitat. Nest cluster presence was more likely with greater nest densities and earlier in the spawning season. The abundance of Smallmouth Bass nests was related to several reach‐scale habitat conditions, with greater nest counts in warmer reaches and reaches with deeper pool habitat. Despite the importance of maternally selected nests in shaping offspring phenotypes, our understanding of how the nest environment affects embryonic development and offspring traits of most non-avian reptiles is rather limited largely due to the logistical difficulty in locating their nests. To identify the relative contributions of environmental (temporal [seasonal] and spatial [nest-site]) and intrinsic (clutch) factors on embryonic development and offspring traits, we conducted a cross-fostering experiment by swapping eggs between maternally-selected nests of the toad-headed agama (Phrynocephalus przewalskii) in the field. We found that nest environment explained a large proportion of variation in incubation duration, hatching success, and offspring size and growth. In contrast, clutch only explained a small proportion of variation in these embryonic and offspring traits. More significantly, compared with spatial effects, seasonal effects explained more phenotypic variation in both embryonic development and offspring traits. Eggs laid early in the nesting season had longer incubation durations and produced smaller hatchlings with higher post-hatching growth rates than did later-laid eggs. Consequently, hatchlings from early-laid eggs reached larger body sizes prior to winter. In addition, we found that female toad-headed agama did not select nests specific to reaction norms of their own offspring because hatchlings from original or translocated nests had similar phenotypic traits. Overall, our study demonstrates the importance of seasonal variation in nest environments in determining embryonic development and offspring phenotypes, which has not been widely appreciated at least in non-avian reptiles.

Greater racket-tailed drongos are renowned for their splendid mimicking abilities, and for their significant roles within mixed species flocks in the Old World tropics. Yet, we know little about their basic ecology and breeding behaviour. Here we describe a set of unique behaviours of these drongos during their nesting season. Racket-tailed drongos nested in trees in an open patch of forest, often returning to the same tree year after year. The nesting pair also smoothened the bark of the nest tree trunk with their beaks. These findings suggest that the nest tree is a crucial resource for this species, and have implications for the cognitive abilities of drongos, as well as for hitherto unknown interactions between an avian species and tropical forest trees.

Approximately 450–550 critically endangered soft-shell turtles locally known as Bostami turtle (Nilssonia nigricans) are confined in a freshwater reservoir (earthen pond) of 5663.24 m2 (84.4 m × 67.1 m) at a shrine in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The shrine is visited by many people and feed these turtles for religious purposes. These turtles are remained half-buried in the mud during the day and also floating, taking rest and feeding in this single pond. A survey was conducted with the shrine authority, visitors as well as observed management protocol to understand the status of Bostami turtle. Their nesting season extends from February to May. The median clutch size was 16.5 (range 16–30). The incubation period was varied from 80–90 days and the successful hatching rate was significantly low (P = 0.03) and gradually decreased from 13.1% to 7.14% in 2008 to 2010. Limited cruising area, eggs predation, overcrowding, lack of proper nesting ground, lack of proper hatching and management facilities are the major threats for this critically endangered fresh water turtle. A poor management could potentially bring health risk and inbreeding depression in the population. All sorts of biological activities in a single pond for an endangered species could potentially bring disaster and appropriate management protocol should be followed. Thus, a standard management protocol of soft-shell turtle has been developed in this study for proper management of Bostami turtle.

In this study invertebrate infestation in green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests were recorded for the first time for Kazanlı beach, Mersin, Turkey. For this aim, in 2006 nesting season, 294 natural intact green turtle nests were sampled to examine their contents and invertebrate infestation was found in 76 (25.85% of the total sampling green turtle nests). These infested nests were examined in terms of the invertebrate faunal composition. The specimens found in the green sea turtle nests were identified to order, family or genus levels and they were represented in 5 orders. These invertebrate groups are Elater sp. larvae (Elateridae; Coleoptera), Pimelia sp. larvae (Tenebrionidae; Coleoptera), Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta), Cyrptostigmata (Acari), Oniscidae (Isopoda), Formicidae (Hymenoptera). Elater sp. was the most common invertebrate group in the green turtle nests. According to student t test, we found statistically significant differences between 7 independent variables and invertebrate species presence. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis explained that there is a negative relationship between hatching success rate and invertebrate species presence.

We investigated the adult Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) return rate and nest-site fidelity in unstable habitats in the Kaniv reservoir (Middle Dnieper, Ukraine) where a regular weather impact such as heavy rains and storms leads to a destruction of nesting colonies. 278 adult birds were tagged with colored rings in 12 Black Tern colonies during the nesting season in 2012-2019. 44 Black Tern birds were resighted or recaptured in eight colonies. The return rate was 15.8 % and it declined rapidly in 3 years. 29 returning terns were noted within the same colonies where the birds had been tagged initially, 15 ones were seen in other colonies, but the majority of them were found no farther than 2 km from the initial colony. The site fidelity mean rate was 66 %. Olgin colony showed a high nest-site fidelity rate, while it was much lower in others. Such variations occurred because of the loss of first clutches caused by unfavorable weather conditions. In the middle of May, strong waves, storms and heavy rains regularly destroyed nesting colonies located in habitats poorly protected by water plant vegetation. Terns relocated their colonies to build new nesting clutches but commonly not farther then 2 km from their first colonies.

There are various biotic factors affecting the hatching success of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nesting on Mediterranean beaches. Eggs contaminated by fungi and bacteria are adversely affected in terms of hatching success. This study aims to identify Fusarium species that cause infection by sampling eggs and nest sands that failed to hatch during the 2015–2016 nesting season. Biospeedy fungal diversity kit was used to identify Fusarium species. Fungi were isolated from eggs and nest sands F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. falciforme and F. keratoplasticum were isolated from nest sand, and F. solani, F. oxysporum were isolated from egg contents. Fusarium species were determined for the first time using molecular methods for Turkey. Fusarium solani (54.55%) was observed to be dominant and F. oxysporum (40.91%) subdominant species. In addition to these dominant species, F. falciforme (1.82%) and F. keratoplasticum (2.73%) have been the other isolated species. The hatching success of the nests contaminated with Fusarium spp. was found to be 10.6% lower than in non-infected ones. Although there was no significant difference between the percentage of hatchling success in infected and non-infected nests in the 2015 season (n = 20) where the number of nests used in sampling was low, a significant difference was found between the success rates in the 2016 season (n = 41) where the number of nests used in sampling was higher (p = 0.676, p = 0.028, respectively). Nest temperature, depth and distance from the sea were higher infection rate, whereas relative humidity was lower in infected nests than in non-infected nests (p < 0.05 for all). Identifying the Fusarium species, which pose serious risks for sea turtle nests worldwide, and investigating their effects on hatching success became more of an issue. In this study, the determination of Fusarium species contaminating the eggs in Iztuzu Beach (Muğla, Turkey) and their sequence analysis was conducted for the first time. © 2020, Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Infection patterns of avian haemosporidians result from the evolution of their associations with hosts, and can be shaped by multiple biotic factors. However, at the level of parasite species, few studies have investigated the details of the temporal dynamics of infection patterns in wild bird communities. We hereby studied a wild bird community in southern Sweden to investigate two generalist parasites (cyt b lineages PARUS1 and WW2) of the morphological species Haemoproteus majoris in their main host species (tits and warblers, respectively) to look for seasonal (spring to autumn) and age class related variation in infection patterns. For both lineages, we detected a similar temporal pattern in prevalence and infection intensity, with peak levels during the main nesting season in adults and a few weeks later in juveniles. Infections in juveniles were detected as soon as they started to be caught by mist nets, implying that they became infected when still in the nest or during the first weeks post-fledging. The initially high intensities in juveniles were followed by a significant decrease during the hatching year, emphasising the importance of studying haemosporidian infections in nestlings and fledglings. Both prevalence and infection intensity in adults increased from spring to early summer, either due to spring relapses or new infections. Both prevalence and infection intensity declined in adults at the time when independent juveniles of the respective species started to appear, suggesting that the rate of parasite withdrawal from blood exceeded the rates of new infections gained and relapses of previous infections. Prevalence in both juveniles and adults approached zero towards the end of the summer.

Among the 44 known species of Scytalopus, only 25 have some type of reproductive information available. Here we present the first description of the nesting site, nest, and eggs of the Rock Tapaculo (Scytalopus petrophilus). The nest was registered inside a ferruginous cave located in the Serra do Gandarela National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The closed nest containing two eggs was collected and consisted of cryptogams, grasses, and passerine remiges. The eggs were white and measured 23.0 × 16.3 mm, and 21.7 × 17.2 mm. Building of a new nest was recorded at the same collection site, in the next breeding season. Nesting season extended at least from October to February, and the nest site was reused within and between reproductive seasons. This suggest a strong local association between the species and the ferruginous caves and it reveals the need to preserve this environment which is currently threatened by mining activities.

Among the numerous factors that contribute to the success of social wasps, colony productivity is the most important and depends on ecological and environmental factors, such as the nest site. Consequently, nest-site choice should be determined by nest-site characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine on which species of plants Polistes gallicus wasps build their nests and identify the possible preferred features of plants used during nest-site selection by the foundress. From February to October 2017-2019 we recorded details of the nests in natural areas in south-western Spain (at 38° latitude). Nests of P. gallicus were recorded on 49 species of plants belonging to 23 families, with Scirpoides holoschoenus, Epilobium hirsutum and Foeniculum vulgare the most common. Significantly more wasps built their nests on herbaceous than on shrub and arboreal plants, and on "green" than "brown-grey" plants. Most of the nests were 21 to 189 cm above the ground, with a nest azimuth of about 102°. Nests were located at a mean distance of 43.51 ± 123.79 m from the nearest source of water. The length of the nesting season in the area studied was between 30 and 33 weeks, and more colonies were founded by a single foundress than several foundresses. Furthermore, a greater percentage of the single foundress colonies failed than of the multiple-foundress colonies.

The goal of this study was to assess the consequences of single versus multiple paternity by identifying paternity of clutches per female to identify whether there were detectable costs or benefits. Multiple mating can occur when the benefits of mating outweigh the costs, but if costs and benefits are equal, no pattern is expected. Previous research on loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) populations found male‐biased breeding sex ratios and multiple mating by many females nesting in southwestern Florida. A sample of nesting loggerhead females who laid more than one nest over the course of the season and a subset of their hatchlings were examined from 36 clutches in 2016 on Sanibel Island, Florida. Males that fathered hatchlings in the first clutch sampled were identified in subsequent clutches. Interestingly, 75% of the females analyzed had mated singly. No male was represented in more than one female's clutches. The results suggest that females likely mate at the beginning of the season and use stored sperm for multiple clutches. Evidence for mating between laying events was limited. There was no consistent pattern across the subsequent multiple paternity clutches, suggesting benefits to loggerhead females likely equal their costs and subsequent mating is likely determined by female preference.

Sand banks are very much useful for the aquatic animals for nesting and basking specially in crocodile and turtles. Being aquatic animals the reptiles in the river such as Gharial, mugger and freshwater turtles come out on the sand bank for basking and laying eggs specially constructed by individual female. The Physico-chemical characteristic of 20 nesting and basking sites of crocodiles and turtles in the Chambal River were carried out between Pali-Chakar nagar riverine stretch, approx. 425 kms during nesting season April, 2006. The sand quality parameters namely average temperature (29.2 0C), average moisture content (8%), average pH (7.5), average electric conductivity (1.3 u mho/cm), average available nitrogen (93.7 Kg/h.), average available phosphorous (3.8 Kg/h.) and average potash (416.6 Kg/h.), were analysed reflects on the pristine nature of the river in Chambal. The sand quality analysis indicated that the river sand in the River area is pollution free and can serve as a good habitat for many aquatic animals including reptilian species.

Data on stranded sea turtles were examined between 2010 and 2016 along the northern region of Rio de Janeiro state and between 2016 and 2017 in the southern region, looking for spatio‐temporal patterns and determining which factors contributed to their mortality. A total of 12,162 strandings of all five species that occur in Brazil were recorded, with Chelonia mydas being the most common (89.9%). Sea turtles use the Rio de Janeiro coast as a feeding and/or migration area. The intense upwelling (October to April) may be an important factor for the sea turtles feeding in this region, mainly for Eretmochelys imbricata and Dermochelys coriacea, which had a higher number of strandings during this period. Areas further north of the study area include an important nesting site for Caretta caretta in Brazil, which explains the higher concentration of strandings of subadults/adults of this species in this region and during its nesting season. Many anthropogenic threats to sea turtles were documented, mainly incidental capture in fisheries and marine debris, indicating possible hotspots for these threats in the regions of Sepetiba and Guanabara Bays, Cabo Frio, and Sao Francisco de Itabapoana. Among the natural causes of strandings, the primary factors were chronic illness, endoparasites, and fibropapillomatosis. However, pollution may also be an indirect threat, which negatively affects these animals through reduced health and immunosuppression, leaving them more susceptible to opportunistic diseases. These data are valuable for directing and implementing specific and local mitigation measures along the Rio de Janeiro state coast, such as avoiding bycatch hotspots through fleet communication programmes and/or area and seasonal closures, enforceable legislation, effective penalties and proper waste management.

Background In recent decades, a decrease of passerine densities was documented in Mediterranean shrublands. At the same time, a widespread encroachment of Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) to Mediterranean shrubland occurred. Such changes in vegetation structure may affect passerine predator assemblage and densities, and in turn impact passerine densities. Depredation during the nesting season is an important factor to influence passerine population size. Understanding the effects of changes in vegetation structure (pine encroachment) on passerine nesting success is the main objective of this study. We do so by assessing the effects of Aleppo pine encroachment on Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala) nest depredation in Mediterranean shrublands. We examined direct and indirect predation pressures through a gradients of pine density, using four methods: (1) placing dummy nests; (2) acoustic monitoring of mobbing events; (3) direct observations on nest predation using cameras; and (4) observation of Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) behaviour as indirect evidence of predation risk. Results We found that Aleppo pine encroachment to Mediterranean shrublands increased nest predation by Eurasian jays. Nest predation was highest in mixed shrubland and pines. These areas are suitable for warblers but had high occurrence rate of Eurasian jays. Conclusions Encroaching pines directly increase activity of Eurasian jays in shrubland habitats, which reduced the nesting success of Sardinian warblers. These findings are supported by multiple methodologies, illustrating different predation pressures along a gradient of pine densities in natural shrublands. Management of Aleppo pine seedlings and removal of unwanted trees in natural shrubland might mitigate arrival and expansion of predators and decrease the predation pressure on passerine nests.

The South Pacific subpopulation of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of significant population declines. Five Queensland beaches support high-density nesting of this subpopulation, but egg and hatchling survival are low at some beaches because of feral and native terrestrial predators. We quantified predation of loggerhead turtle eggs by two species of goanna, Varanus panoptes and Varanus varius, at Wreck Rock beach, one of the turtle's major nesting beaches. In addition, we conducted an experiment to determine the efficacy of a nest protection device. Predation rates at Wreck Rock beach were 15.2% for treatment and 45.8% for non-treatment clutches during the 2013–2014 nesting season. A higher probability of predation (64%) was predicted for the northern beach. Although nests were only partially predated (16.4% of the total number of eggs), nest loss to predators and beach erosion (caused by a cyclone) was 91.7%. If left unmanaged, the cumulative impact of predation and other threats, including those exacerbated by climate change, can cause unsustainable loss of loggerhead turtle nests. This study provides one of the first quantitative data sets on rates of loggerhead turtle clutch predation in the South Pacific. It enhances our understanding of goanna predation impacts and identifies an efficient predator exclusion device for mitigating the effects of terrestrial predators at Wreck Rock beach, and for protecting marine turtle nests across northern Australia and globally.

Iranian nesting populations of the critically endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate) are some of the most important in the Indian Ocean. In this study, four of the most important hawksbill nesting grounds in the Persian Gulf, situated within three Iranian marine protected areas, were surveyed during nesting season, including Nakhiloo, Ommolgorm and Kharko Islands and the mainland beaches of the Naiband Marine-Coastal National Park (NMCNP). We present GIS maps of these key nesting grounds and describe sand texture of key nesting zones, along with conservation recommendations. About 9.2 (28.3%) out of 32.5 km of all shores surveyed in this study were used by nesting hawksbill turtles follows: Nakhiloo: 1.4 km (52% of potential nesting area); Ommolgorm: 1.94 km (40%); Kharko: 3.4 km (28%), and NMCNP: 2.46 km (18.9%). The average nesting density was calculated as 131 nests/km at Nakhiloo, 76 nests/km at Ommolgorm, 7 nests/km at Kharko, and 15 nests per km at NMCNP. Highest nesting density was observed in Nakhiloo and Ommolgorm. It is thought that high hawksbill nesting density in these islands seems likely a result of limiting adequate nesting shores rather than the size of population, and also low density in Kharko and NMCNP more related to past and current pressures and low population density. With the exception of Ommolgorm Island, sands at the nesting grounds were well sorted. Grain size indicated that female hawksbill turtles in the Iranian Persian Gulf nest in sands that are generally mixed, with mean grain size ranging from coarse sands (0.4Φ; ~0.5-1 mm) to fine sands (2Φ; ~0.25 mm). We provide and discuss conservation recommendations and suggestions for future.

The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is in general decline across its North American distribution. In contrast to widespread patterns of decline, kestrel populations appear stable in the southern Great Plains region. Historically, this region had a very low occurrence of kestrels, and their current abundance is highly likely due to vegetation and structures associated with settlement by people of European descent. To determine prey use by breeding kestrels, we placed motion-activated video cameras at preexisting kestrel nest boxes located in the Southern High Plains in 2017. We recorded over 4200 prey deliveries during 1748 hr of observation at five nests over the 4-wk brood-rearing period. On basis of frequency, these deliveries were dominated by reptiles (74.8%), with invertebrates (18.2%), mammals (4.4%), birds (2.9%), and unidentified (1.2%) prey used to lesser extents. Prey delivery rates were high relative to other studies; across the brood-rearing period we recorded an average of 2.3 deliveries/hr, equating to an average of 0.49 deliveries and 3.85 g of prey/nestling/hr. Because invertebrates dominate the diet reported in most kestrel food habit studies, the volume of reptiles captured as prey was unexpected. Even more unanticipated was the number of large prey captured, including juvenile eastern cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) and ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus, Xerospermophilus spilosoma). We suspect the proportion of vertebrate prey captured during the nesting season may explain the local high rates of nesting success and number of young fledged.

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottus) were studied between 1995 and 2015 on a university campus in New Orleans, U.S.A., spanning the 2005 landfall of Hurricane Katrina. The storm subjected the city to high winds and a prolonged flood. Nesting success showed a spike for 3 y after the storm, after which it gradually sank back to near pre-storm levels. Number of broods detected jumped from the first to the second year after the storm on campus and at two nearby residential sites. Success of males in acquiring mates improved from the first nesting season after the storm to the second across the three sites. Results draw attention to the importance of considering top-down effects in analyzing the recovery of storm-impacted birds.

Anthropogenic climate change is affecting many bird species in a variety of ways, causing changes in their distribution, abundance, and food supply, and triggering responses such as shifting migration and nesting seasons. Most studies have focused on migratory birds that breed in temperate areas and little is known about effects of climate change on tropical birds. We used a 24 year dataset that included 1,632 nesting events of the Oahu Elepaio (Chasiempis ibidis), an endangered forest bird endemic to Hawaii, to investigate whether breeding phenology and performance were related to rainfall and whether a recent shift in the breeding season is related to changes in rainfall. Fecundity of the Oahu Elepaio was closely related to rainfall, with more offspring produced during years with higher rainfall. During the first 19 years of this study, from 1996 to 2014, all nests were initiated from November to June. From 2015 to 2019, up to 33% of annual reproduction occurred from August to October. Higher rainfall caused parallel increases in reproduction during the normal nesting season and the atypical season, with some birds nesting in both seasons. The change in breeding phenology of the Oahu Elepaio is unusual because it was not a gradual transition, but a sudden change of 6 months. The shift in breeding phenology coincided with unusually high summer and fall rainfall from tropical storms associated with a novel climate pattern in the northern Pacific Ocean from late 2014–2016 termed the warm blob. This pattern of warmer water and more frequent storms is expected to become more prevalent in the Central Pacific, so summer–fall breeding in the Oahu Elepaio is likely to continue and perhaps become more common. The Oahu Elepaio is flexible, adaptable, and may not be seriously affected by changing climatic conditions.

Praja RN, Yudhana A, Haditanojo W, Oktaviana V. 2021. Short Communication: Antimicrobial properties in cloacal fluid of olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Biodiversitas 22: 3671-3676. There were several speculations regarding the main purpose of sea turtle cloacal fluid, such as lubrication during egg deposition, which could help reduce egg speed as they are dropped in nesting sand, or contain antimicrobial properties to protect their eggs from pathogenic microorganisms. However, the exact purpose of this fluid which is mucous-like in consistency remains unknown. This study aimed to identify antimicrobial properties in the cloacal fluid of olive ridley sea turtles. Cloacal fluid samples were collected during nesting season in Banyuwangi City coastal areas, East Java Province, Indonesia. Moreover, the Kirby-Bauer diffusion disk method recorded antimicrobial properties and tested against several bacterial colonies collected from sand in natural nesting chambers. This preliminary study also concluded that antimicrobial properties were recorded when presented against several bacteria colonies from natural nesting sands namely Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Bacillus spp. Furthermore, the present study should be expanded to include other bacteria and fungi colonies. In addition, results from the present study could be used to develop methods in creating antibiotics similar to those found naturally in natural nesting areas to prevent microorganism contamination and globally increase hatchling success, which has a greater impact to support sea turtle conservation efforts as endangered species.

Major aggregations of nesting green turtles (Chelonia mydas) occur in the northern Red Sea, although little is known about the reproductive ecology of this endangered species in the region. To address this issue, we satellite-tracked 30 female green turtles to document their movements and to identify factors driving habitat use at two major rookeries in the Red Sea, Jazirat Mashabah (Mashabah Island) and Ras Al Baridi in Saudi Arabia. Between successive nesting events, turtles displayed high fidelity to nesting beaches and adjacent in-water habitats (inter-nesting habitats). Using generalized linear mixed models, we estimated the mean probability of nesting per beach emergence (nesting success rate) to be 0.628, and the mean duration between a successful nesting event and the successive emergence onto the beach (re-nesting interval) to be 10.8 days at each site. The nesting success rate was relatively high (>0.8) when the preceding daytime land surface temperature (LST) was lower than 37°C but decreased with elevated daytime LST (47°C). Re-nesting interval was longer at lower water temperatures and towards the end of the nesting season of individuals. Our study improves the robustness of abundance estimates from census data (e.g., track counts) and shows that the protection of nesting and inter-nesting habitats during a breeding season would be an effective conservation strategy for the species. We discuss how global warming could increase energy expenditure due to lowered nesting success, ultimately compromising the reproductive fitness of these populations.

Surveying the breeding population of a given species can be difficult for many logistic reasons. Marine turtles are a challenging taxon for the study of reproductive ecology and breeding strategies, because turtles aggregate off-shore and males remain exclusively at sea. For successful management of sea turtle populations, determining operational sex ratios (OSRs) on a continuing basis is critical for determining long-term population viability, particularly in the context of changing hatchling sex ratios due to temperature-dependent sex determination in a warming climate. To understand how survey technique and stage of the breeding season might influence the ability to detect turtles and determine OSRs, we surveyed the presence and identified the sex of adult male and female green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) using a boat and small commercial unoccupied/unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), at the start (October) and peak (December) of a nesting season at an important breeding site at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The ratio of males to females within the breeding ground detected by both survey methods changed from being male-biased in October to heavily female-biased in December, indicating that most males cease their reproductive effort and depart before the peak of the nesting season. Surveying with a UAV more than doubled the rate of turtles seen per minute of survey effort compared with surveying solely from the boat and allowed surveys to be conducted at times and/or places unsafe or inaccessible for boats. The sex of a slightly greater proportion of turtles seen could not be identified by observers using a UAV versus a boat, although more turtles were detected using the UAV. The departure of many males during the peak of the nesting season is likely due to an increasing biological cost of residency in the area because males encounter fewer receptive females as the season progresses and the limited foraging opportunity is insufficient to support the number of males present. Overall, we found that UAVs are an effective tool for studying important but difficult to observe aspects of sea turtle biology.

We quantified nesting activity and incidence of nest flooding in a population of the Magdalena River turtle (Podocnemis lewyana), which inhabits the climatic equator in northern Colombia, during two dry seasons when beaches formed (“verano”—December to March—and “veranillo”—July and August). Nesting activity was concentrated in the verano period, despite the presence of suitable nesting habitat in both dry season periods. More than half of all nests were harvested by local people, and 42.5% of the nests in both dry seasons that survived harvest were subsequently lost to flooding due to rises in the river to approximately a 4.15 m level. We used this value as a threshold value for the appearance of beaches and inspected a 44-year data base on river levels in this area. The verano and veranillo nesting periods did not differ in terms of opportunities for successful nesting, but there was evidence that the veranillo nesting season has increased significantly in duration in recent years, as well as experienced fewer flooding events. It is not clear why nesting each year is principally concentrated in the verano nesting season, but the evidence that this section of the Magdalena River is drying more in recent years during veranillo may entail a new threat to this population if it implies that non-nesting habitat (adjacent wetlands and channels) might eventually disappear.

We searched for nests and studied aspects of the breeding biology of Southern Caracaras (Caracara plancus) in the Patagonian grasslands biome of southern Santa Cruz province, Patagonia, Argentina, at the southern limit of the species' continental distribution. In this open, mostly flat landscape where potential nest substrates are rare and isolated yet conspicuous, caracaras nested in native Magellan barberry shrubs (Berberis microphylla), exotic trees associated with ranch houses and other buildings, on coastal cliffs, and on human-made structures associated with petroleum and gas extraction plants. These extraction activities, which began only in the past three decades in this region have provided new nesting opportunities for this species. Nest characteristics, brood size, and productivity recorded in our study area were similar to what has been previously reported for the Southern Caracara nesting across its broad latitudinal range. In our study area, average productivity in both years combined (2010–2011) was 2.1 fledglings per successful pair (n = 27). The nesting season for this caracara population apparently extends from September through January, phenology that is similar to that reported for caracaras nesting at a similar latitude in Chile and for other raptor species in Santa Cruz province. However, the nesting season seems to be shorter than for caracara populations nesting at northern latitudes in Argentina. In this vast, open landscape, nest substrates provided by human-made structures may be an important determinant of the spatial distribution of Southern Caracara nests.

Baseline plasma electrophoresis profiles (EPH) are important components of overall health and may aid in the conservation and captive management of species. The aim of this study was to establish plasma protein fractions for free-ranging Blanding’s turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) and evaluate differences due to age class (adult vs. sub-adult vs. juvenile), sex (male, female, or unknown), year (2018 vs. 2019), month (May vs. June vs. July), health status, and geographical location (managed vs. unmanaged sites). Blood samples were obtained from 156 Blanding’s turtles in the summer of 2018 and 129 in 2019 at two adjacent sites in Illinois. Results of the multivariate analysis demonstrated that age class, sex, year, month, health status, and geographical location all contributed to the variation observed in free-ranging populations. Adult females had the highest concentration of many protein fractions, likely associated with reproductive activity. Juveniles had lower protein concentrations. Temperature and rainfall differences between years impacted concentrations between 2018 and 2019, while May and June of both years saw higher levels in some protein fractions likely due to peak breeding and nesting season. Individuals with evidence of trauma or disease also showed increased plasma protein fractions when compared to those that were considered healthy. The two sites showed a wide/large variation over the two years. All of these factors emphasize the importance of considering multiple demographic or environmental factors when interpreting the EPH fractions. Establishing ranges for these analytes will allow investigation into disease prevalence and other environmental factors impacting this endangered species.

A detailed understanding of the spatial ecology and habitat requirements of endangered species is critical for population restoration and conservation. Home ranges and movements of the endangered Chinese softshell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) were investigated in the Yellow River, northwestern China, from October 2016 to July 2018. We monitored 9 adult turtles (5 females and 4 males) with radio transmitters. Mean linear range size was 440 ± 161 m SD, mean river channel area was 1.98 ± 0.72 ha SD, the average minimum convex polygon was 1.36 ± 0.65 ha SD, average 95% kernel density estimator measured 0.84 ± 0.51 ha SD, with a core area (50% kernel density estimator) of 0.30 ± 0.20 ha SD. Home range values were not significantly different between the sexes nor were they related to straight-line carapace length or mass. Daily movements of P. sinensis averaged 35 ± 18 m SD for males and 43 ± 18 m SD for females, and there was no significant difference between sexes or significant correlation between movement patterns and body size. However, during the nesting season, there was a significant difference between sexes. Turtle activity was highest in May (average daily movement 59 ± 6 m SD) and lowest in January (0.4 ± 0.6 m SD). Given that P. sinensis individuals have small home ranges and are capable of existing in small rivers, management efforts should protect smaller rivers that may be easily overlooked. Results from this study provide the first assessment of home range requirements for P. sinensis, which may be used in future population modeling efforts and are important for establishing conservation strategies for this vulnerable species.

Energy transfer is fundamental to ecosystem processes, affecting productivity and community structure. Large aggregations of colonially breeding birds are known as nutrient sources through deposition of feces, but also may deposit large quantities of energy in the form of dead nestlings. The magnitude and ecological relevance of this process to the scavenger community is poorly understood. We used trail cameras to monitor the fates of size-appropriate chicken carcasses in heron colonies in order to quantify the proportion of available fallen nestlings that were consumed by scavengers in the Everglades of Florida, USA. Overall, 85% of 160 carcasses were consumed, with Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura, 47%) and American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis, 29%) being the primary consumers. Probability of consumption by alligators or vultures was related to distance from nest to water, local nesting density, and colony type. Consumption probabilities of both scavengers in relation to habitat covariates suggested clear resource partitioning promoting coexistence. We estimate fallen nestlings throughout this ecosystem could support 16% of the alligator population and 147 adult Turkey Vultures during a nesting season. This work indicates that fallen nestlings can serve as an important source of energy for scavengers at colonial breeding aggregations, particularly in oligotrophic systems.

During range expansions, species can experience rapid population growth if changes in climate or interspecific interactions remove limits on growth rates in novel habitats. Here I document a century of range expansion in the Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) and investigate the causes of its recent abundance through a combination of demographic, climatic, and phenological analyses. Christmas Bird Count records indicate that populations have been growing in California since the early twentieth century. Sites across the Pacific Northwest show striking fits to simple models of exponential growth following colonization in the 1960s and 1970s, and nest records indicate that the species now delays the start of the nesting season by at least 16 days in the north. Although the species now occurs in a much wider range of climates than before the range expansion, the fastest growing populations in the northwest are in regions with minimum breeding season temperatures similar to those occupied by the species in its native range. Range expansions in the Anna's hummingbird thus reflect an ecological release likely caused by a mix of introduced plants, human facilitation, and phenological acclimation that allowed a California native to expand across western North America.

The inundation of foreshore and backshore coastal environments caused by wave runup or groundwater intrusion can be extremely detrimental for beach-dwelling organisms. For beach-nesting species, whose eggs require sufficient gas exchange with the surrounding environment for proper embryonic development, inundation for prolonged periods can result in embryonic mortality. Management strategies such as the relocation of nests high on the beach to avoid wave action have been applied for some species, though this strategy may result in unnecessary nest manipulation. To improve the identification of beach locations potentially exposed to inundation caused by wave wash-over which may require management action, wave runup models were tested in Fort Morgan, Alabama, USA for the 2016 sea turtle nesting season. The potential exposure of sea turtle nesting sites to wave wash-over was determined by comparing observed nest elevations to the predicted combined elevation of wave runup, tide, and surge (i.e., total water level). Total water level was calculated using three different definitions of beach slope: foreshore, nest, and dune-to-water (DTW), and two LiDAR-derived elevation estimates: the most recent survey from 2016 and a time-averaged digital elevation model (DEM). Models using the time-averaged DEM performed as well as, or better than, those using the 2016 LiDAR survey in the majority of comparisons. Wash-over state was correctly identified for up to 83.3% of sites when using nest slope in the wave runup calculation. However, DTW slope performed the best when predicting the wash-over frequency of a site. Mapping of the predicted 98th percentile of wave runup indicated that only 11.2% of nesting sites were exposed to wave wash-over, in contrast to the 21.3% of nests which were relocated. Wave runup models have not previously been used to inform sea turtle conservation actions; however, it holds promise for improved targeted management interventions and can assist other species (e.g., shorebirds, beach mice), which rely on dry beach habitat for nesting, feeding, and migratory rest stops. Wave runup models can also be used to investigate past storm events, forecast approaching storm impacts, and supplement sea level rise scenarios for coastal species management at multiple spatial scales.

The clutch size of passerine birds of 39 species in 3797 nests is considered. The dependence of the number of eggs in nests of northern passerine birds on the pattern of their distribution within the tundra zone and on the size of ranges, as well as the relationship of the trend of variation in the clutch size of species with different patterns of adaptation to the Subarctic, are discussed. Differences in clutch size between species nesting in different geographic zones and at different latitudes from the Ob forest tundra to northern Yamal are analyzed. The dynamics of clutch size during the nesting season and size of the first clutches, repeat clutches (that replaced the destroyed ones), and normal second clutches is described. The rule known for birds of temperate latitudes was verified for tundra passerine birds: “the earlier the onset of breeding, the larger the clutch size”.

Nest survival is a vital component of breeding success, and affects population dynamics, as the loss of nests is the main cause of reproductive failure in birds. To identify key factors for the conservation of Chinese grouse Tetrastes sewerzowi, we tested the effects of nest concealment, nest age, nesting season, and habitat edge on nest daily survival rate (DSR) of Chinese grouse using 54 nests found at Lianhuashan Nature Reserve, Gansu, China, 2009–2012. Moreover, we controlled for the effect of research activity by testing the effect of nest checks on DSR. Overall, mammal predation caused 93% of nest failures. DSR was 0.986 ± 0.0038 in the constant model and the probability of a nest with a full clutch of 6 eggs surviving the entire 40-day nesting period was 0.526 ± 0.090. DSR decreased with nest age and nesting season (from 19 May to 3 July). Mammals instead of avian predators being responsible for most nest failures suggest that nest sites might be selected to avoid visual avian predators, but not olfactory mammalian predators, and the decreasing trend of DSR with nest age and nesting season could attribute to an additive exposure effect. Moreover, nest checks conducted by investigators significantly lowered nest DSR, especially during the late period of nesting season and for older nests. Mammalian predators might locate the nest site by following the investigator’s odor. Based on our results, we suggest that the late incubation stage is a particularly vulnerable period for nest survival of Chinese grouse and those researchers should adjust their activities around nests to balance the need of acquiring accurate data and decreasing nest predation risk.

Road mortality poses a major threat to turtle populations. Several studies have suggested that the terrestrial movements associated with nesting increase this risk for females. The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) is home to the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, which admits 900 or more turtles a year, with road injuries the primary cause of admission. We tested the hypothesis that road mortality in turtles is female-biased using data from injured Midland Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata), Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina), Blanding’s Turtles (Emydoidea blandingii), and Northern Map Turtles (Graptemys geographica) collected over about 126 000 km2 and admitted to OTCC’s hospital from January 2013 to October 2017. There was no difference in the number of male and female admissions of Midland Painted, Blanding’s, or Snapping Turtles (P > 0.05); however, more female Northern Map Turtles than males were admitted (P < 0.001). Admission of female turtles peaked in June during the nesting season, but male admissions were more evenly distributed throughout the season. Our admissions data provide a temporally unbiased and geographically broad snapshot of turtle–vehicle interactions that can directly inform conservation and management policies. Although our data are not equivalent to mortality rates, these results demonstrate that vehicle strikes can have a substantial impact on both female and male turtles.
