Aruba is part of the Netherlands Antilles and lies just 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The 15-by-20 mile island has become a tourist mecca since the mid-80's, and had 500,000 visitors in 1994. It has some of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean.

The Netherlands Antilles comprise the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba. The six islands are very different in character, with Aruba and St. Marten having a well-developed tourist industry, and Saba and St. Eustatius receiving few visitors by comparison. Curacao has one of the most diversified economies in the Dutch Caribbean and has many tourist attractions, with 214,082 international visitors in 1993, of which nearly 30% were from the Netherlands. The Dutch Antilles islands, Bonaire, Aruba and Curacao, are trying to penetrate the UK market, as UK operators virtually ignore them. Whilst there are daily flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and charters from Frankfurt, Germany, UK travellers appear disinterested in the islands, which is difficult and more expensive to travel to than other areas of the Caribbean. Curacao is pretty and full of history, has a low crime rate and is very safe. Bonaire is a suitable diving area. The Caribbean Tourism Organisation is promoting the islands, and hopes to receive the first UK charter by 1995.
