Background: Visual perception of face images or face pareidolia can be evaluated with event-related potentials (ERP) for healthy subjects and patients with neurological conditions. In this study, we aimed to analyse event-related potential components such as P100, N100, N170, and vertex-positive potential (VPP) in response to face pareidolia perception in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. Methods: ERPs were recorded during the pareidolia test. Waveforms were analzyed and current source density (CSD) maps were generated. Results: CSD profiles were shown to be interpretable when face and face pareidolia conditions. N100, P100, and N170 components showed larger amplitudes and longer latency in epilepsy patients in response to face pareidolia stimuli compared to real face images. However, the N170 component latency did not differ significantly between epilepsy patients and healthy participants, while the larger amplitude and longer latency of N100 and P100 responses were evoked in healthy patients. Speech is often structurally and semantically ambiguous. Here we study how the human brain uses sentence context to resolve lexical ambiguity. Twenty-one participants listened to spoken narratives while magneto-encephalography (MEG) was recorded. Stories were annotated for grammatical word class (noun, verb, adjective) under two hypothesised sources of information: "bottom-up": the most common word class given the word's phonology; "top-down": the correct word class given the context. We trained a classifier on trials where the hypotheses matched (about 90%) and tested the classifier on trials where they mismatched. The classifier predicted top-down word class labels, and anti-correlated with bottom-up labels. Effects peaked ∼100 ms after word onset over mid-frontal MEG sensors. Phonetic information was encoded in parallel, though peaking later (∼200 ms). Our results support that lexical representations are built in a context-sensitive manner, which precedes sensory phonetic processing. Breathlessness is an aversive bodily sensation impacting millions of people worldwide. It is often highly detrimental for patients and can lead to profound distress and suffering. Notably, unpredictable breathlessness episodes are often reported as being more severe and unpleasant than predictable episodes, but the underlying reasons have not yet been firmly established in experimental studies. This review aimed to summarize the available empirical evidence about the perception of unpredictable breathlessness in the adult population. Specifically, we examined: (1) effects of unpredictable relative to predictable episodes of breathlessness on their perceived intensity and unpleasantness, (2) potentially associated neural and psychophysiological correlates, (3) potentially related factors such as state and trait negative affectivity. Nine studies were identified and integrated in this review, all of them conducted in healthy adult participants. The main finding across studies suggested that unpredictable compared to predictable, breathlessness elicits more frequently states of high fear and distress, which may contribute to amplify the perception of unpredictable breathlessness, especially its unpleasantness. Trait negative affectivity did not seem to directly affect the perception of unpredictable breathlessness. However, it seemed to reinforce state fear and anxiety, hence possible indirect modulatory pathways through these affective states. Studies investigating neural correlates of breathlessness perception and psychophysiological measures did not show clear associations with unpredictability. We discuss the implication of these results for future research and clinical applications, which necessitate further investigations, especially in clinical samples suffering from breathlessness. During communication in real-life settings, our brain often needs to integrate auditory and visual information and at the same time actively focus on the relevant sources of information, while ignoring interference from irrelevant events. The interaction between integration and attention processes remains poorly understood. Here, we use rapid invisible frequency tagging and magnetoencephalography to investigate how attention affects auditory and visual information processing and integration, during multimodal communication. We presented human participants (male and female) with videos of an actress uttering action verbs (auditory; tagged at 58 Hz) accompanied by two movie clips of hand gestures on both sides of fixation (attended stimulus tagged at 65 Hz; unattended stimulus tagged at 63 Hz). Integration difficulty was manipulated by a lower-order auditory factor (clear/degraded speech) and a higher-order visual semantic factor (matching/mismatching gesture). We observed an enhanced neural response to the attended visual information during degraded speech compared to clear speech. For the unattended information, the neural response to mismatching gestures was enhanced compared to matching gestures. Furthermore, signal power at the intermodulation frequencies of the frequency tags, indexing nonlinear signal interactions, was enhanced in the left frontotemporal and frontal regions. Focusing on the left inferior frontal gyrus, this enhancement was specific for the attended information, for those trials that benefitted from integration with a matching gesture. Together, our results suggest that attention modulates audiovisual processing and interaction, depending on the congruence and quality of the sensory input. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sound texture perception takes advantage of a hierarchy of time-averaged statistical features of acoustic stimuli, but much remains unclear about how these statistical features are processed along the auditory pathway. Here, we compared the neural representation of sound textures in the inferior colliculus (IC) and auditory cortex (AC) of anesthetized female rats. We recorded responses to texture morph stimuli that gradually add statistical features of increasingly higher complexity. For each texture, several different exemplars were synthesized using different random seeds. An analysis of transient and ongoing multiunit responses showed that the IC units were sensitive to every type of statistical feature, albeit to a varying extent. In contrast, only a small proportion of AC units were overtly sensitive to any statistical features. Differences in texture types explained more of the variance of IC neural responses than did differences in exemplars, indicating a degree of "texture type tuning" in the IC, but the same was, perhaps surprisingly, not the case for AC responses. We also evaluated the accuracy of texture type classification from single-trial population activity and found that IC responses became more informative as more summary statistics were included in the texture morphs, while for AC population responses, classification performance remained consistently very low. These results argue against the idea that AC neurons encode sound type via an overt sensitivity in neural firing rate to fine-grain spectral and temporal statistical features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Reading in Arabic is challenging for many early learners. To improve Arabic reading fluency, a new textbook (IQRA) was designed to enhance the visual characteristics of Arabic and, thus, help children recognize the Arabic orthography. Despite promising behavioral improvement, it is unknown whether this improvement is associated with accelerated development of the brain's reading network, which develops over many years. Thus, the goal of this study was to measure brain responses to Arabic print in early readers enrolled in IQRA instruction. Reading was assessed and electroencephalography (EEG) responses were collected from 49 first-grade children in the UAE (N = 27 IQRA treatment, N = 22 control) while completing a single EEG task at the end of the school year. Behavioral measures of word identification revealed a slight improvement for IQRA children compared to their peers in control classrooms. EEG responses suggest improved familiarity with Arabic in IQRA children as well as increased print-specific response, though the latter finding did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. These findings suggest a modest effect of the IQRA curriculum on neural responses to print in young readers. Future work is needed to understand the long-term impact of IQRA on the reading brain.

In unrelated sign languages event structure is reflected in the dynamic form of verbs, and hearing non-signers are known to be able to recognise these visual event structures. This study assessed the time course of neural processing mechanisms in non-signers to examine the pathways for incorporation of physical-perceptual motion features into the linguistic system. In an EEG study, hearing non-signers classified telic/atelic verb signs (two-choice lexical decision task). The ERP effects reflect differences in perceptual processing of verb types (early anterior ERP effects) and integration of perceptual and linguistic processing required by the task (later posterior ERP effects). Non-signers appear to segment signed input into discrete events as they try to map the sign to a linguistic concept. This might indicate the potential pathway for co-optation of perceptual features into the linguistic structure of sign languages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Music therapy has been shown to be effective for multiple clinical endpoints associated with substance use disorder such as craving reduction, emotion regulation, depression, and anxiety, but there are a lack of studies investigating those effects in UK Community Substance Misuse Treatment Services (CSMTSs). Furthermore, there is a demand for identifying music therapy mechanisms of change and related brain processes for substance use disorder treatment. The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of music therapy and a pre-test, post-test, and in-session measurement battery in a CSMTS. Methods: Fifteen participants, from a community service based in London, will take part in a mixed-methods non-blind randomized-controlled trial. Ten participants will receive six-weekly sessions of music therapy in addition to the standard treatment offered by the CSMTS—five of them will receive individual music therapy and five of them will receive group music therapy—while a further five participants will act as a control group receiving standard treatment only. Satisfaction and acceptability will be evaluated in focus groups with service users and staff members following the final treatment session. Moreover, attendance and completion rates will be monitored throughout the intervention. Subjective and behavioral indexes will be assessed before and after the interventions to explore the effects of music therapy on craving, substance use, symptoms of depression and anxiety, inhibitory control, and will be correlated with associated neurophysiological signatures. In-session analysis of two individual music therapy sessions will serve to explore how music and emotion are processed in the brain within the therapy. The data collected at each step will be included in an intention-to-treat analysis basis. Discussion: This study will provide a first report on the feasibility of music therapy as an intervention for participants with substance use disorder engaged within a community service. It will also provide valuable information regarding the implementation of a multifaceted methodology that includes neurophysiological, questionnaire-based, and behavioral assessments in this cohort. Notwithstanding the limitation of a small sample size, the present study will provide novel preliminary data regarding neurophysiological outcomes in participants with substance use disorder that received music therapy. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability to learn, remember, predict, and make an optimal judgment based on Computer-assisted Design (CAD) Systems. Traditional CAD algorithms and methods on head CT scans focused on the automatic recognition, segmentation, and classification of the abnormalities. But, these approaches were encountered with several limitations like (i) smaller dataset size, (ii) negative Transfer Learning, and (iii) improper localization. This paper proposed the new dense-layered deep neural model to classify brain hemorrhages using head CT scans. The proposed model is the ten-layered network having dense blocks with skip connections. It uses the cross-chained connection between dense blocks to minimize gradient loss while training. Later, the last layer of the model is extended with Grad-Cam for localization of the affected cell regions. The model performance is evaluated on a dataset of head CT scans of size 427.25GB. The dataset is partitioned into 752,800 images in the training set and 121,232 images in the testing set. The experimentation results achieved an accuracy of 98.32% with a mean logarithmic loss of 0.06487. The average classification accuracy of the proposed model on multiple-class hemorrhages is 98.27%. The experimentation results are found satisfactory having the best AUC-ROC accuracy of 98.32%. The comparative analysis of the model with other traditional deep neural networks proves the efficacy of the model in predicting results. Inspired by the use of random projections in biological sensing systems, we present a new algorithm for processing data in classification problems. This is based on observations of the human brain and the fruit fly's olfactory system and involves randomly projecting data into a space of greatly increased dimension before applying a cap operation to truncate the smaller entries. This leads to a simple algorithm that is very computationally efficient and can be used to either give a sparse representation with minimal loss in classification accuracy or give improved robustness, in the sense that classification accuracy is improved when noise is added to the data. This is demonstrated with numerical experiments, which supplement theoretical results demonstrating that the resulting signal transform is continuous and invertible, in an appropriate sense. Implantable medical devices capable of monitoring hundreds to thousands of electrodes have received great attention in biomedical applications for understanding of the brain function and to treat brain diseases such as epilepsy, dystonia, and Parkinson's disease. Non-invasive neural recording modalities such as fMRI and EEGs were widely used since the 1960s, but to acquire better information, invasive modalities gained popularity. Since such invasive neural recording system requires high efficiency and low power operation, they have been implemented as integrated circuits. Many techniques have been developed and applied when designing integrated high-density neural recording architecture for better performance, higher efficiency, and lower power consumption. This paper covers general knowledge of neural signals and frequently used neural recording architectures for monitoring neural activity. For neural recording architecture, various neural recording amplifier structures are covered. Middle childhood seems to be crucial for the emergence of a moral identity, that is, an evaluative stance of how important it is for someone's sense of self to be moral. This study investigates the effects of moral identity on the neural processing of moral content in 10‐year‐old children. Participants were presented with scenes portraying prosocial and antisocial behavior, while electroencephalographic responses were collected. Analyses of event‐related potentials (ERPs) showed that, for children with a strong moral identity, antisocial scenes elicited a greater early posterior negativity (EPN) as compared to prosocial scenes. Thus, for children with a strong moral identity, antisocial scenes capture more attentional resources than prosocial ones in early processing stages. In contrast to previous findings with adults, the implicit moral self‐concept was not related to any ERP differences. Overall, the results show that, even in its developmental emergence, moral identity relates to the neurocognitive processing of third‐party moral content. Together, the study supports the social‐cognitive model of the development of moral identity, according to which moral identity is based on a chronical activation of moral schemas that guide a person's perception of the social world. The Theory of Mind is a bridge of mental understanding between us and others. Its proper functioning provides opportunities for communication, effective social interaction, development on a cognitive and metacognitive level. The present study aims to examine its developmental stages from infancy to adolescence, as well as the main factors that stimulate or defeat its course. The crucial development of executive skills, language function, and the importance of the role of ICTs is pointed out, as they compensate for the difficulties in the formation of Theory of Mind and promote its continuous improvement throughout an individual's life. Purpose: Eyecare is evolving increasingly personalised corrections and increasingly personalised evaluations of corrections on‐eye. This report describes individualising optical and neural components of the VSX (visual Strehl) metric and evaluates personalisation using two clinical applications. (1) Better understanding visual experience: While VSX tracks visual performance in typical eyes, non‐individualised metrics underestimated visual performance in highly aberrated eyes – could this be understood by personalising metrics? (2) Metric‐optimised objective spherocylindrical refractions in typical and atypical eyes have used neural weighting functions of typical eyes – will personalisation affect the outcome in clinical 0.25D steps? Methods: Orientation‐specific neural contrast sensitivity was measured in four typical myopic and astigmatic eyes and six eyes with keratoconus. Wavefront error was measured in all eyes while uncorrected and when the keratoconic eyes wore wavefront‐guided scleral lenses. Total experiment duration was 24–28 h per subject. Two versions of VSX were calculated for each application: one weighted ocular optics with measured neural contrast sensitivity data from that eye, another weighted optics with a representative neural function of typical eyes. Wavefront‐guided corrections were evaluated using the two metric values. Spherocylindrical corrections that optimised each metric were identified. Results: Metric values for keratoconic eyes improved by a mean factor of 1.99 (~0.3 log units) when personalised. Applying this factor to a larger sample of eyes from a previous keratoconus study reconciled dissonances between the percentage of eyes reaching normative best‐corrected metric levels and the percentages of eyes reaching normative levels of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Spherocylindrical corrections that optimised both versions of VSX were clinically equivalent (mean ± SD Euclidean dioptric difference 0.13 ± 0.18 D). Conclusions: Personalising visual image quality metrics is beneficial when actual metric values are used (evaluating ophthalmic corrections on‐eye against norms) and when fine increments in visual quality are imparted (wavefront‐guided corrections). However, partially individualised metrics appear adequate when metrics relatively rank spherocylindrical corrections in 0.25 D steps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: The present study provides an overview of studies in neuroscience and sign language. It also examines the sign language and the neural regions involved in this language both in terms of its perception and in terms of its production. Sign language processing has been done, with most agreeing on the importance of the left hemisphere in sign language processing. New studies also speak of the right hemisphere's involvement. Many studies have identified the sign language as a means to increase our knowledge of the linguistic and cognitive basis of the brain Materials and Methods: This article reviews, evaluates and critiques the results of articles presented in databases from 1998 to 2018, and categorizes the information obtained in accordance with the content of the studies and reviews. 24 studies including neural basis for sign language, early sign language acquisition, working memory and manual excellence in the sign language were examined. Results: Many language studies have identified gesture as a means of enhancing our knowledge of the linguistic and cognitive basis of the brain. Studies have been conducted on the active role of the cerebral hemisphere in sign language processing, with most agreeing on the importance of the left cerebral hemisphere in sign language processing. New studies also speak of right hemisphere participation. Language comprehension Sign language comprehension differs markedly in both the left and right hemispheres, and this particular difference is mainly in the related visual areas. Conclusion: Sign language neuroscience research has expanded rapidly in recent years and has become a major part of neuroscience research. The output of these studies is also in the area of brain organization and brain plasticity in language cognition and processing. So it seems that further studies on different aspects of the sign language production and understanding are needed to get to the basis and function of the brain.

The world in color presents a dazzling dimension of phenotypic variation. Biological interest in this variation has burgeoned, due to both increased means for quantifying spectral information and heightened appreciation for how animals view the world differently than humans. Effective study of color traits is challenged by how to best quantify visual perception in nonhuman species. This requires consideration of at least visual physiology but ultimately also the neural processes underlying perception. Our knowledge of color perception is founded largely on the principles gained from human psychophysics that have proven generalizable based on comparative studies in select animal models. Appreciation of these principles, their empirical foundation, and the reasonable limits to their applicability is crucial to reaching informed conclusions in color research. In this article, we seek a common intellectual basis for the study of color in nature. We first discuss the key perceptual principles, namely, retinal photoreception, sensory channels, opponent processing, color constancy, and receptor noise. We then draw on this basis to inform an analytical framework driven by the research question in relation to identifiable viewers and visual tasks of interest. Consideration of the limits to perceptual inference guides two primary decisions: first, whether a sensory-based approach is necessary and justified and, second, whether the visual task refers to perceptual distance or discriminability. We outline informed approaches in each situation and discuss key challenges for future progress, focusing particularly on how animals perceive color. Given that animal behavior serves as both the basic unit of psychophysics and the ultimate driver of color ecology/evolution, behavioral data are critical to reconciling knowledge across the schools of color research.

Increased use of epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (eSCS) for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the properties of reflex circuits in the isolated spinal cord, particularly in response to repetitive stimulation. Here, we investigate the frequency-dependence of modulation of short- and long-latency EMG responses of lower limb muscles in patients with SCI at rest. Single stimuli could evoke short-latency responses as well as long-latency (likely polysynaptic) responses. The short-latency component was enhanced at low frequencies and declined at higher rates. In all muscles, the effects of eSCS were more complex if polysynaptic activity was elicited, making the motor output become an active process expressed either as suppression, tonic or rhythmical activity. The polysynaptic activity threshold is not constant and might vary with different stimulation frequencies, which speaks for its temporal dependency. Polysynaptic components can be observed as direct responses, neuromodulation of monosynaptic responses or driving the muscle activity by themselves, depending on the frequency level. We suggest that the presence of polysynaptic activity could be a potential predictor for appropriate stimulation conditions. This work studies the complex behaviour of spinal circuits deprived of voluntary motor control from the brain and in the absence of any other inputs. This is done by describing the monosynaptic responses, polysynaptic activity, and its interaction through its input–output interaction with sustain stimulation that, unlike single stimuli used to study the reflex pathway, can strongly influence the interneuron circuitry and reveal a broader spectrum of connectivity. Exposure to peer victimization is a traumatic stressor, with adverse consequences for mental and physical health. This prospective, multi‐method, multi‐informant study investigated how victimization "gets into the brain," as reflected in neural dysregulation of emotion during adolescence. Moreover, we examined whether certain youth are particularly vulnerable to compromised neural function (i.e., a pattern of positive amygdala‐right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex [rVLPFC] connectivity linked to poor emotion regulation [ER] and emotional distress) following victimization. In all, 43 adolescent girls completed an implicit ER task during a functional brain scan, and reported on rejection sensitivity. In 6th–9th grades, teachers and adolescents reported annually on victimization. Results revealed that a history of elevated victimization predicted less effective neural regulation of emotion (more positive amygdala‐rVLPFC connectivity) in girls with high but not low rejection sensitivity. Consistent with a differential susceptibility model, high rejection sensitivity was associated with particularly effective neural regulation of emotion (more negative amygdala‐rVLPFC connectivity) in girls with low‐victimization histories. A parallel pattern emerged for a behavioral index of ER. This research provides insight into one pathway through which peer adversity undermines emotional development in ways that forecast compromised future health, and identifies youth who are at particularly high risk following peer adversity. Eyes with the corneal ectasia keratoconus have performed better than expected (e.g. visual acuity) given their elevated levels of higher-order aberrations that cause rotationally asymmetric retinal blur. Adapted neural processing has been suggested as an explanation but has not been measured across multiple meridional orientations. Using a custom Maxwellian-view laser interferometer to bypass ocular optics, sinusoidal grating neural contrast sensitivity was measured in six eyes (three subjects) with keratoconus and four typical eyes (two subjects) at six spatial frequencies and eight orientations using a two-interval forced-choice paradigm. Total measurement duration was 24 to 28 hours per subject. Neural contrast sensitivity functions of typical eyes agreed with literature and generally showed the oblique effect on a linear-scale and rotational symmetry on a log-scale (rotational symmetry was quantified as the ratio of the minor and major radii of an ellipse fit to all orientations within each spatial frequency; typical eye mean 0.93, median 0.93; where a circle = 1). Mean sensitivities of eyes with keratoconus were 20% to 60% lower (at lower and higher spatial frequencies respectively) than typical eyes. Orientation-specific neural contrast sensitivity functions in keratoconus showed substantial rotational asymmetry (ellipse radii ratio: mean 0.84; median 0.86) and large meridional reductions. The visual image quality metric VSX was used with a permutation test to combine the asymmetric optical aberrations of the eyes with keratoconus and their measured asymmetric neural functions, which illustrated how the neural sensitivities generally mitigated the detrimental effects of the optics. Daily worldwide newspapers print articles exposing government corruption. Yet these messages do not lead to a loss of votes for the corrupt parties. Sympathizers' partisan bias, which respectively minimizes and maximizes corruption and positive messages of their own parties respectively, is widely considered the main cause of the loss of effectiveness of political communications. Despite the well‐established existence of such bias when processing political information, little is known as to its psychological origin. Through the use of neuroscience (fMRI), this study explores the underlying brain mechanisms of negative (corruption) and positive political messages related to a conservative and a socialist Spanish political party, as well as the differences between their sympathizers. The findings reveal that negative (vs. positive) political messages exert the greatest neuroimaging impact on the electorate, as shown in aversive, risk, and disappointment‐related brain regions. Interestingly, we show that there exists a main partisan bias against opposite parties (and not a positive bias toward one's own party) that stems from a higher risk, ambiguity, and disbelief provoked by both positive and negative information about rival parties. Furthermore, this bias was more pronounced among conservative supporters. The current findings provide valuable insights for political parties to improve their communication campaigns. The development of neural multifunctionality – given brain regions carrying out more than one function – conferred great efficiency on brain function at early stages of evolution. This applied to animals that led relatively simple lives with few needs for long-term memories, such as many lower invertebrates – many molluscs, echinoderms, worms, etc. As more complex lifestyles and detailed focal vision evolved, needs for self-initiated and reflexive activities increased in frequency, and recognition of many locales, conspecifics, and other forms of life became essential. These developments were accompanied by greatly expanded needs for neural processing supporting sensory and motor activities, and establishing and storing long-term memories. Since these categories of neural processing occur in largely overlapping brain regions, brain functioning would have become increasingly maladaptive, had the evolution of these more complex lifestyles not been accompanied by compensating adaptations that obviated these potentially conflicting brain activities. These adaptations consisted of: first, restful waking; second, primitive sleep; and finally, fully developed sleep, with its specialized rapid-eye-movement and non-rapid-eye-movement states, that contribute to the maintenance of great efficiency of brain function. The only animals with detailed focal vision that can achieve highly efficient brain function without sleep, are those in which demands on memory processing are greatly reduced in consequence of routine, monotonous, almost purely reflexive lifestyles, with few needs for acquiring experiential long-term memories. The best known animals in this non-sleeping category are tunas and many sharks.

This paper presents an efficient implementation of multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) algorithm, a multivariate extension of EMD algorithm. Analogous to EMD, MEMD decomposes a multivariate signal into its intrinsic mode functions using joint rotational mode. The algorithm is computationally intensive because of its recursive nature and any increase in input data size results in anonlinear increase in its execution time. Therefore, it is extremely time-consuming to obtain a decomposition of signal, such as EEG into its intrinsic modes using MEMD. As the interest in applying MEMD algorithm in various domains is increasing, there is a need to develop an optimized implementation of the algorithm, since it requires repeated execution of the same operations and computationally extensive interpolations on each projected vector. This can be done using GPGPU, because it has the power to process similar function on different blocks of data. We have compared the optimized implementation of MEMD, using GPU, with the MATLAB implementation for hexa-variate and hexa-deca-variate data sets, and observed that the GPU-based optimized implementation results in approximately 6× ~ 16× performance improvements in terms of time consumption.

Sound texture perception takes advantage of a hierarchy of time-averaged statistical features of acoustic stimuli, but much remains unclear about how these statistical features are processed along the auditory pathway. Here, we compared the neural representation of sound textures in the inferior colliculus (IC) and auditory cortex (AC) of anesthetized female rats. We recorded responses to texture morph stimuli that gradually add statistical features of increasingly higher complexity. For each texture, several different exemplars were synthesized using different random seeds. An analysis of transient and ongoing multiunit responses showed that the IC units were sensitive to every type of statistical feature, albeit to a varying extent. In contrast, only a small proportion of AC units were overtly sensitive to any statistical features. Differences in texture types explained more of the variance of IC neural responses than did differences in exemplars, indicating a degree of "texture type tuning" in the IC, but the same was, perhaps surprisingly, not the case for AC responses. We also evaluated the accuracy of texture type classification from single-trial population activity and found that IC responses became more informative as more summary statistics were included in the texture morphs, while for AC population responses, classification performance remained consistently very low. The time course of neuroanatomical structural and functional measures across the lifespan is commonly reported in association with aging. Blood oxygen-level dependent signal variability, estimated using the standard deviation of the signal, or "BOLDSD," is an emerging metric of variability in neural processing, and has been shown to be positively correlated with cognitive flexibility. Generally, BOLDSD is reported to decrease with aging, and is thought to reflect age-related cognitive decline. Additionally, it is well established that normative aging is associated with structural changes in brain regions, and that these predict functional decline in various cognitive domains. Nevertheless, the interaction between alterations in cortical morphology and BOLDSD changes has not been modeled quantitatively. The objective of the current study was to investigate the influence of cortical morphology metrics [i.e., cortical thickness (CT), gray matter (GM) volume, and cortical area (CA)] on age-related BOLDSD changes by treating these cortical morphology metrics as possible physiological confounds using linear mixed models. We studied these metrics in 28 healthy older subjects scanned twice at approximately 2.5 years interval. Results show that BOLDSD is confounded by cortical morphology metrics. Respectively, changes in CT but not GM volume nor CA, show a significant interaction with BOLDSD alterations. Abstract Intracortical inhibitory modulation seems crucial for an intact motor control and motor learning. However, the influence of long(er) term training on short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) is scarcely investigated. With respect to balance, it was previously shown that with increasing postural task difficulty, SICI decreased but the effect of balance training (BT) is unknown. The present study tested whether improvements in postural control due to BT are accompanied by changes in SICI. SICI was measured in the tibialis anterior by applying paired-pulse magnetic stimuli to the motor cortex in a BT group (n = 13) training 2 weeks on an unstable platform and a control (CON) group (n = 13) while performing three progressively demanding postural tasks: stable stance ('Stable'), standing on a movable platform partly secured with elastic straps ('Straps') or freely moving ('Free'). The BT group improved postural control significantly more than the CON-group ('Free' condition: +80% vs. + 21%; p < 0.001). For SICI, there was a main effect of POSTURAL TASK (F 2, 48 = 24.6; p < 0.001) with decreasing SICI when task difficulty increased and a TIME × GROUP interaction (F 1, 24 = 5.9; p = 0.02) caused by significantly enhanced SICI in the BT group in all three postural tasks after the training. The increases in SICI were significantly correlated with improvements in balance performance (r = 0.56; p = 0.047). The present study confirms previous findings of task-specific modulation of SICI when balancing. More importantly, training was shown to increase SICI and this increase was correlated with changes in balance performance. Abstract Dyspnea is a threatening symptom frequently experienced by patients within social contexts such as in the presence of family members, health professionals, or other patients. However, the effects of social presence on perceived dyspnea remain unknown. Therefore, this study examined the effects of social presence on dyspnea perception and cortical neural processing of respiratory sensations using respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREPs) in the electroencephalogram while additionally investigating the impact of dyspnea-specific fear. Thirty-one healthy females underwent four experimental conditions while RREPs were induced by inspiratory occlusions: (1)observer present/no dyspnea, (2)observer present/dyspnea, (3)alone/no dyspnea, (4)alone/dyspnea. The observer presence reduced ratings of perceived dyspnea during dyspnea conditions either significantly or at trend level. Additionally, reduced amplitudes at trend level of RREP component P2 in conditions with an observer present were found. No associations with dyspnea-specific fear were found. How cognitive neural systems process information is largely unknown, in part because of how difficult it is to accurately follow the flow of information from sensors via neurons to actuators. Measuring the flow of information is different from measuring correlations between firing neurons, for which several measures are available, foremost among them the Shannon information, which is an undirected measure. Several information-theoretic notions of “directed information” have been used to successfully detect the flow of information in some systems, in particular in the neuroscience community. However, recent work has shown that directed information measures such as transfer entropy can sometimes inadequately estimate information flow, or even fail to identify manifest directed influences, especially if neurons contribute in a cryptographic manner to influence the effector neuron. Because it is unclear how often such cryptic influences emerge in cognitive systems, the usefulness of transfer entropy measures to reconstruct information flow is unknown. Here, we test how often cryptographic logic emerges in an evolutionary process that generates artificial neural circuits for two fundamental cognitive tasks (motion detection and sound localization). Besides counting the frequency of problematic logic gates, we also test whether transfer entropy applied to an activity time-series recorded from behaving digital brains can infer information flow, compared to a ground-truth model of direct influence constructed from connectivity and circuit logic. Our results suggest that transfer entropy will sometimes fail to infer directed information when it exists, and sometimes suggest a causal connection when there is none. However, the extent of incorrect inference strongly depends on the cognitive task considered. These results emphasize the importance of understanding the fundamental logic processes that contribute to information flow in cognitive processing, and quantifying their relevance in any given nervous system.

Previous studies suggest that psychopathic traits commonly present as comorbid with substance use disorders. Moreover, neuroimaging and psychometric findings suggest that psychopathic traits may predispose individuals to a sensitized reward response to drugs. Given that substance use disorders are characterized by a neurocognitive bias toward drug-reward relative to non-drug reward, it is possible that heightened psychopathic characteristics may further predispose to this processing bias. To evaluate this possibility, we assessed psychopathic traits (measured using the PCL-R; Hare, 2003) in 105 probationers/parolees and evaluated the relationship between PCL-R scores, lifetime duration of drug use, and biases in neural response to drug- compared to food-related videos. Psychopathic traits (potentially driven by interpersonal/affective traits) were positively correlated with drug > food reactivity within the right insula and left amygdala. In addition, psychopathic traits modulated the relationship between drug use and drug > food reactivity within the left dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, right insula, and left caudate nucleus. Specifically, lifetime duration of drug use correlated positively with drug > food reactivity in participants with lower levels of psychopathic traits and correlated negatively with drug > food reactivity in individuals with higher levels of psychopathic traits. These results help reconcile prior studies on psychopathy and drug-stimulus processing and provide neurocognitive support for the notion that psychopathic traits serve as an underlying risk factor for substance use disorders. These results suggest that different treatment regimens for substance abuse for individuals with higher or lower levels of psychopathy may be beneficial and suggest that reduction of neurocognitive biases to drug-related stimuli may offer useful targets for future treatment protocols.

Diabetes and its complications affect the younger population and are associated with a high mortality rate; however, early diagnosis can contribute to the selection of appropriate treatment regimens that can reduce mortality. Although diabetes diagnosis via exhaled breath has great potential for early diagnosis, research on such diagnosis is restricted to disease detection, requiring in-depth examination to diagnose and classify diseases and their complications. This study demonstrates the use of an artificial neural processing-based bioelectronic nose to accurately diagnose diabetes and classify diabetic types (type I and II) and their complications, such as heart disease. Specifically, an M13 phage-based electronic nose (e-nose) is used to explore the features of subjects with diabetes at various levels of cellular and organismal organization (cells, liver organoids, and mice). Exhaled breath samples are collected during culturing and exposed to the phage-based e-nose. Compared with cells, liver organoids cultured under conditions mimicking a diabetic environment display properties that closely resemble the characteristics of diabetic mice. Even though obese individuals often succeed with weight loss, long-term weight loss maintenance remains elusive. Dietary, lifestyle and psychosocial correlates of weight loss maintenance have been researched, yet the nature of maintenance is still poorly understood. Studying the neural processing of weight loss maintainers may provide a much-needed insight towards sustained obesity management. In this narrative review, we evaluate and critically discuss available evidence regarding the food-related neural responses of weight loss maintainers, as opposed to those of obese or lean persons. While research is still ongoing, available data indicate that following weight loss, maintainers exhibit persistent reward related feeling over food, similar to that of obese persons. However, unlike in obese persons, in maintainers, reward-related brain activity appears to be counteracted by subsequently heightened inhibition. These findings suggest that post-dieting, maintainers acquire a certain level of cognitive control which possibly protects them from weight regaining. The prefrontal cortex, as well as the limbic system, encompass key regions of interest for weight loss maintenance, and their contributions to long term successful weight loss should be further explored. An auditory oddball paradigm was employed to examine the unattended processing of pitch variation which functions to signal hierarchically different levels of meaning contrasts. Four oddball conditions were constructed by varying the pitch contour of critical words embedded in a Mandarin Chinese sentence. Two conditions included lexical-level word meaning contrasts (i.e. TONE condition) and the other two sentence-level information-status contrasts (i.e. ACCENTUATION condition). Both included stimuli with early vs. late acoustic cue divergence points. Results showed that the two early-cue conditions elicited earlier Mismatch Negativities, regardless of their functional hierarchy. The deviant stimuli induced theta-band power increases in the TONE condition but beta-band power decreases in the ACCENTUATIION condition, regardless of the timing of their acoustic cues. These results suggest that, in an unattentive state, the human brain can functionally disentangle hierarchically different levels of pitch variation, and the brain responses to these pitch variations are time-locked to the presence of the acoustic cues. Abstract: Seeing articulatory gestures enhances speech perception. Perception of auditory speech can even be changed by incongruent visual gestures, which is known as the McGurk effect (e.g., dubbing a voice saying /mi/ onto a face articulating /ni/, observers often hear /ni/). In children, the McGurk effect is weaker than in adults, but no previous knowledge exists about the neural‐level correlates of the McGurk effect in school‐age children. Using brain event‐related potentials, we investigated change detection responses to congruent and incongruent audiovisual speech in school‐age children and adults. We used an oddball paradigm with a congruent audiovisual /mi/ as the standard stimulus and a congruent audiovisual /ni/ or McGurk A/mi/V/ni/ as the deviant stimulus. In adults, a similar change detection response was elicited by both deviant stimuli. In children, change detection responses differed between the congruent and the McGurk stimulus.
