Although associations between cognitive impairment and either apathy or gait dysfunction have been shown in SVD, the inter-relations among these three clinical features and their potential common neural basis remains unexplored. The dopaminergic meso-cortical and meso-limbic pathways have been known as the important brain circuits for both cognitive control, emotion regulation and motor function. Here, we investigated the potential inter-relations between cognitive impairment, apathy, and gait dysfunction, with a specific focus on determining whether these clinical features are associated with damage to the meso-cortical and meso-limbic pathways in SVD.In this cross-sectional study, we included 213 participants with SVD in whom MRI scans and comprehensive neurobehavioral assessments were administered. These assessments comprised of six clinical measures: processing speed, executive function, memory, apathy (based on the Apathy Evaluation Scale), and gait function (based on the time and steps in Timed Up and Go test). We reconstructed five tracts connecting ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), ventral lateral PFC (vlPFC), medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) within meso-cortical and meso-limbic pathways using diffusion weighted imaging. The damage along the five tracts was quantified using the free water (FW) and FW-corrected mean diffusivity (MD-t) indices. Furthermore, we explored the inter-correlations among the six clinical measures and identified their common components using principal component analysis (PCA).Linear regression analyses showed that higher FW values of tracts within meso-cortical pathways were related to these clinical measures in cognition, apathy, and gait (all P-corrected values < 0.05). This study explored which properties of an error influence the likelihood of its selection over the target word. Analysing real-word errors in speeded picture naming, we investigated whether, relative to the target, naming errors were more typical representatives of the semantic category, were associated with more semantic features, and/or were semantically more closely related to the target than its near semantic neighbours were on average. Results indicated that naming errors tended to be more typical category representatives and possess more semantic features than the targets. Moreover, while not being the closest semantic neighbours, errors were largely near semantic neighbours of the targets. Contains fulltext : 307165.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Irritability worsens prognosis and increases mortality in individuals with Attention-Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, treatment options are still insufficient. The aim of this randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study was to investigate the superiority of a synbiotic over placebo in the management of adults with ADHD and/or BPD and high levels of irritability. The study was conducted between February 2019 and October 2020 at three European clinical centers located in Hungary, Spain and Germany. Included were patients aged 18-65 years old diagnosed with ADHD and/or BPD and high levels of irritability (i.e., an Affectivity Reactivity Index (ARI-S) ≥ 5, plus a Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale (CGI-S) score ≥ 4). Subjects were randomized 1(synbiotic):1(placebo); the agent was administered each day, for 10 consecutive weeks. The primary outcome measure was end-of-treatment response (i.e., a reduction ≥ 30 % in the ARI-S total score compared to baseline, plus a Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) total score of < 3 (very much, or much improved), at week 10). Between-treatment differences in secondary outcomes, as well as safety were also investigated. Of the 231 included participants, 180 (90:90) were randomized and included in the intention-to-treat-analyses. Of these, 117 (65 %) were females, the mean age was 38 years, ADHD was diagnosed in 113 (63 %), BPD in 44 (24 %), both in 23 (13 %). The synbiotic was well tolerated. At week 10, patients allocated to the synbiotic showed a significantly higher response rate compared to those allocated to placebo (OR: 0.2, 95 % CI:0.1 to 0.7; P = 0.01). These findings suggest that that (add-on) treatment with a synbiotic may be associated with a clinically meaningful improvement in irritability in, at least, a subgroup of adults with ADHD and/or BPD. Error-based motor adaptation is traditionally seen as a form of nondeclarative memory, but recent findings suggest that it involves both fast, declarative, and slow, nondeclarative adaptive processes. If the declarative memory system shares resources with the fast process in motor adaptation, it can be hypothesized that the fast, but not the slow, process is disturbed in AD patients. To test this, we studied 20 early-stage AD patients and 21 age-matched controls of both sexes using a reach adaptation paradigm that relies on spontaneous recovery after sequential exposure to opposing force fields. Adaptation was measured using error clamps and expressed as an adaptation index (AI). Although patients with AD showed slightly lower adaptation to the force field than the controls, both groups demonstrated effects of spontaneous recovery. The time course of the AI was fitted by a hierarchical Bayesian two-state model in which each dynamic state is characterized by a retention and learning rate. Compared to controls, the retention rate of the fast process was the only parameter that was significantly different (lower) in the AD patients, confirming that the memory of the declarative, fast process is disturbed by AD. The slow adaptive process was virtually unaffected. Since the slow process learns only weakly from an error, our results provide neurocomputational evidence for the clinical practice of errorless learning of everyday tasks in people with dementia., 13 p.

However, previous studies are limited, predominantly based on small and pediatric cohorts, likely affected by selection bias, and show a broad range of findings. We aimed to characterize the neuropsychological functioning of adults with PHTS. A total of 40 participants, with intellectual disability as exclusion criterium, completed an extensive clinical neuropsychological assessment including cognitive tasks, questionnaires, and a clinical diagnostic interview. The cognitive tasks and questionnaire data were categorized as below and above average based on 1.5 SD. About 80% of participants showed an average level of intelligence. In addition, 30% and 24% of participants scored below average on immediate memory recall and speed of information processing, respectively. Furthermore, about 25% reported above average scores on the majority of the questionnaires, indicating psychological distress, signs of alexithymia, and cognitive complaints. Personality of participants was characterized by inflexibility, social withdrawal, and difficulties in recognizing and describing their own emotions. Adults with PHTS demonstrate a heterogeneous yet distinct neuropsychological profile that is characterized by slower information processing, psychological problems, and specific personality traits. However, the most recent perspective on the underlying mechanism of EL explicitly takes executive processes into account. The aim of this study was to investigate whether EL of object locations is beneficial for memory performance compared to trial-and-error learning (TEL) in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) experiencing executive deficits (N = 15) and matched healthy controls (N = 15). Participants completed an EL and TEL condition of a computerized spatial learning task, in which the location of everyday objects had to be memorized. The number of errors made during learning was predetermined, varying from 0 (EL condition) to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 errors (TEL condition). In this fMRI study, we examined the underlying functional neuroanatomy of contextually and visually guided lexical access, and its consistency across sessions. We employed a context-driven picture naming task with fifteen healthy speakers reading incomplete sentences (word-by-word) and subsequently naming the picture depicting the final word. Sentences provided either a constrained or unconstrained lead–in setting for the picture to be named, thereby approximating lexical access in natural language use. The picture name could be planned either through sentence context (constrained) or picture appearance (unconstrained). This procedure was repeated in an equivalent second session two to four weeks later with the same sample to test for test-retest consistency. Picture naming times showed a strong context effect, confirming that constrained sentences speed up production of the final word depicted as an image. fMRI results showed that the areas common to contextually and visually guided lexical access were left fusiform and left inferior frontal gyrus (both consistently active across-sessions), and middle temporal gyrus. However, non-overlapping patterns were also found, notably in the left temporal and parietal cortices, suggesting a different neural circuit for contextually versus visually guided lexical access. 14 p.

The effects of musical mnemonics in aging have been scarcely studied. Methods: The present study examined the effects of musical presentation of digits (pitch sequences, rhythms, and their combinations) on working memory performance in young and older adults, as compared to spoken presentation. Results: A facilitating effect of rhythm was found in both groups, whereas pitch and melodic cues affected performance negatively in older adults only. Musical training did not moderate the effect of musical mnemonics. Discussion: To investigate whether persons with working memory impairment also benefit from musical mnemonics, follow-up research in older persons with, for instance, mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's dementia is recommended. 14 p.

10. How to advance the debate on the criminal responsibility of antisocial offenders

The current debate seems to have reached a stalemate. Several scholars have argued that neuropsychological data on individuals with psychopathy might be relevant for determining their criminal responsibility. However, relying on such data has not produced a consensus among legal scholars and philosophers on whether individuals with psychopathy should be excused from responsibility. We offer a diagnosis about why this debate has reached a standoff. We argue that part of the problem is that psychopathy, being a syndrome-based category, is too heterogeneous and thus offers low prospects for being integrated with neuropsychological data that might support significant conclusions about the criminal responsibility of individuals with psychopathy. Moreover, the construct of psychopathy was not originally devised to discriminate criminally accountable from unaccountable antisocial individuals. To overcome these difficulties and advance the debate, we extend a currently less discussed theoretical framework for bridging biopsychology and the law that focuses on neuropsychological constructs, domains, and processes that directly measure capacities of offenders that are relevant for criminal responsibility, without necessarily relying on mediating syndrome-based constructs. The novelty of our contribution is that the biopsychological bases of exculpation can be further developed and used for determining more fine-grained categorisations of antisocial personality types. We show how this framework provides guidelines for interdisciplinary research that can significantly advance our understanding of the preconditions for criminal responsibility and help the legal practice of ascribing or withholding it., 17 p.

Complaints may have a significant impact on patients, affecting social behavior and psychological well-being. This study aims to explore the extent of subjective cognitive and affective symptoms in patients with degenerative ataxias in the Netherlands. An explorative study was set up in a heterogeneous group of degenerative ataxia patients. Self-reported cognition was evaluated in terms of executive functioning and affect (Dysexecutive Questionnaire/DEX), and memory/attention (Cognitive Failures Questionnaire/CFQ). The Daily Living Questionnaire (DLQ) was administered to quantify the impact on daily life. Furthermore, informants completed questionnaires to obtain insight into patients' self-awareness and social cognition (Observable Social Cognition Rating Scale/OSCARS). This study shows that subjective complaints in the domains of (1) executive functioning and/or (2) memory and attention were reported by 29% of all patients (n = 24/84). In addition, more difficulties in daily life in terms of language/comprehension and community/participation were reported, and this was more common for patients with cognitive complaints than those without. Discrepancies between patients and informants about executive functioning were present in both directions. Deficits in social cognition were not identified at the group level, but more social-cognitive problems were observed in patients with more executive problems rated by informants. Taken together, our findings indicate that cognitive complaints are common in patients with degenerative cerebellar disorders and have an impact on daily life functioning. This study aims to compare executive performances of patients with alcohol-induced neurocognitive disorder, including Korsakoff's syndrome (KS), by using a computerized assessment battery allowing a fine-grained and precise neuropsychological assessment; (2) Methods: performances of 22 patients with alcohol-related cognitive impairment (ARCI) and 20 patients with KS were compared to those of 22 matched non-alcoholic controls. All participants were diagnosed in accordance with DSM-5-TR criteria and were at least six weeks abstinent from alcohol prior to assessment. Executive function was evaluated using four subtests of Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB®); (3) Results: significant differences between groups were found on spatial working memory (updating), sustained attention and inhibitory control, set shifting, and planning. Healthy controls performed significantly better than both patient groups (Games-Howell post hoc; p < 0.05), but no differences in performance were found between the ARCI and KS group; (4) Conclusions: ARCI and KS patients showed significant executive impairments, most prominent in updating, set-shifting and general planning abilities. Findings suggest equivalent levels of executive function in ARCI and KS patients. Our results highlight executive function as a significant hallmark of alcohol-induced neurocognitive disorder and stipulate the importance of early assessment and evaluation of skills to guide treatment., 12 p.

Item does not contain fulltext, Patients with hemispatial neglect show multiple oculomotor deficits like delayed contralesional saccade latencies, hypometric saccade amplitudes, and impaired smooth pursuit. We aimed to investigate whether modulation of superior colliculus (SC) activity via monocular eye patching improves neglect patients’ eye movements to the contralesional side of space. Thirteen neglect patients with left-hemispheric (LH) stroke, 22 neglect patients with right-hemispheric (RH) stroke, and 24 healthy controls completed a video-oculographic examination of horizontal smooth pursuit and reactive saccades twice, while the left or right eye was covered with an eye patch. Independent of the eye patch position, LH and RH patients showed enlarged saccade latencies toward contralesional stimuli. In addition, both during smooth pursuit and reactive saccades, RH patients made significantly fewer rightward saccades when the right than when the left eye was patched. Moreover, during reactive saccades, RH patients made significantly fewer right than left saccades, but only when the right eye was patched. These findings suggest that the ipsilesional eye patch modulated ipsilesional ocular performance in the RH group, presumably resulting from differences in SC activity. Yet, ipsilesional eye patching did not improve eye movements to the contralesional side of space, possibly due to the incomplete contralateral retinocollicular projection in humans., 10 p.

However, when the object is presented in the left visual field, the patient verbally states that he saw nothing but nevertheless identifies it accurately with the left hand. This interaction suggests that perception, recognition and responding are separated in the two isolated hemispheres. However, there is now accumulating evidence that this interaction is not absolute; for instance, split-brain patients are able to detect and localise stimuli anywhere in the visual field verbally and with either hand. In this study we set out to explore this cross-hemifield interaction in more detail with the split-brain patient DDC and carried out two experiments. The aim of these experiments is to unveil the unity of deliberate and automatic processing in the context of visual integration across hemispheres. Experiment 1 suggests that automatic processing is split in this context. In contrast, when the patient is forced to adopt a conscious, deliberate, approach, processing seemed to be unified across visual fields (and thus across hemispheres). First, we looked at the confidence that DDC has in his responses. The experiment involved a simultaneous "same" versus “different” matching task with two shapes presented either within one hemifield or across fixation. The results showed that we replicated the observation that split brain patients cannot match across fixation, but more interesting, that DDC was very confident in the across-fixation condition while performing at chance-level. On the basis of this result, we hypothesised a two-route explanation. In healthy subjects, the visual information from the two hemifields is integrated in an automatic, unconscious fashion via the intact splenium, and this route has been severed in DDC. De Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT) is zo'n batterij die uit meerdere subtests bestaat en als doel heeft om alledaagse geheugenfuncties in kaart te brengen. Onlangs is voor Nederland de nieuwste versie van deze geheugentestbatterij bewerkt, gevalideerd en genormeerd, de RBMT-3-NL. Binnen het Topklinische Korsakovcentrum voor Alcoholgerelateerde Cognitieve Stoornissen van het Vincent van Gogh voor Geestelijke Gezondheid in Venray in Nederland wordt sinds een aantal jaren gespecialiseerd casemanagement aangeboden voor patiënten met alcoholgerelateerde neurocognitieve stoornissen, met als doel terugval in alcoholgebruik te minimaliseren en de zelfredzaamheid van patiënten in de thuissituatie te optimaliseren. Deze aanpak is binnen de GGZ in Nederland uniek, omdat deze doelgroep, patiënten met alcoholafhankelijkheid en bijkomende (beperkte of uitgebreide) neurocognitieve stoornissen, niet als zodanig onderscheiden wordt binnen de reguliere verslavingszorg, instellingen gericht op niet-aangeboren hersenletsel of de geestelijke gezondheidszorg.

Item does not contain fulltext, Objective: Studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the extent to which neurocognitive recovery occurs in abstinent patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). In addition to abstinence, other factors may have influenced this process and contributed to the inconsistencies. This review examines the factors investigated in this regard and describes the possible influence of each factor based on the evidence collected. Methodology: PubMed was systematically searched for articles published between January 2000 and July 2023. Longitudinal humane studies investigating neurocognitive recovery in abstinent adult AUD patients were included. Studies with a cross-sectional design were excluded, as were studies that did not classify AUD according to the DSM-IV or 5 criteria, only examined binge use, did not report neuropsychological outcomes or duration of abstinence, or where neurological disorders were present. Results: Sixteen categories of factors were distinguished from 31 full-text articles. Consistent patterns were found, indicating an association between neurocognitive recovery and the “smoking” and ‘brain volume” factors. Consistent patterns were also found indicating that there is no relationship with “quantities of alcohol used” and “education level.” A similar consistent pattern was also found for “polysubstance use”, “gender” and “verbal reading”, but the number of studies is considered limited. The association with “age” is studied frequently but with inconsistent findings. The remaining eight factors were regarded as understudied. Conclusion: The clearest patterns emerging from the evidence are a predominantly negative influence of smoking on neurocognitive recovery, associations between changes in brain area volume and neurocognitive recovery, and no association between neurocognitive recovery and the amount of alcohol consumed, as measured by self-report, nor with educational attainment. While previous studies have shown altered brain connectivity in patients with epilepsy, little is however known about the changes in functional brain connectivity in young stroke patients with post-stroke epilepsy and their relationship with cognitive impairment. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether young ischaemic stroke patients have altered functional networks and whether this alteration is related to cognitive impairment. We included 164 participants with a first-ever cerebral infarction at young age (18-50 years), along with 77 age- and sex-matched controls, from the Follow-Up of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke patients and Unelucidated Risk Factor Evaluation study. All participants underwent neuropsychological testing and resting-state functional MRI to generate functional connectivity networks. At follow-up (10.5 years after the index event), 23 participants developed post-stroke epilepsy. Graph theoretical analysis revealed functional network reorganization in participants with post-stroke epilepsy, in whom a weaker (i.e. network strength), less-integrated (i.e. global efficiency) and less-segregated (i.e. clustering coefficient and local efficiency) functional network was observed compared with the participants without post-stroke epilepsy group and the controls (P < 0.05). Regional analysis showed a trend towards decreased clustering coefficient, local efficiency and nodal efficiency in contralesional brain regions, including the caudal anterior cingulate cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, precuneus, superior frontal gyrus and insula in participants with post-stroke epilepsy compared with those without post-stroke epilepsy. Furthermore, participants with post-stroke epilepsy more often had impairment in the processing speed domain than the group without post-stroke epilepsy, in whom the network properties o, 12 p.

Abstract

Our understanding of post-stroke language function is largely based on older age groups, who show increasing age-related brain pathology and neural reorganisation. To illustrate language outcomes in the young-adult brain, we present the case of A., a 23 y.o. woman with chronic aphasia from a left-hemisphere stroke affecting the temporal lobe. Diffusion MRI-based tractography indicated that A.’s language-relevant white matter structures were severely damaged. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we explored A.’s conceptual preparation and word planning abilities. Context-driven and bare picture-naming tasks revealed naming deficits, manifesting as word-finding difficulties and semantic paraphasias about half of the time. Naming was however facilitated by semantically constraining lead-in sentences. Altogether, this pattern indicates relatively spared conceptual preparation but disrupted lexical and phonological retrieval abilities. MEG revealed that A.’s conceptual and naming-related neural responses were supported by the right hemisphere, compared to the typical left-lateralised brain response of a matched control. Differential recruitment of right-hemisphere structures (330-440 ms postpicture onset) was found concurrently during successful naming (right mid-to-posterior temporal lobe) and word-finding attempts (right inferior frontal gyrus). Disconnection of the temporal lobes via corpus callosum was not critical for recruitment of the right hemisphere in visually guided naming, possibly due to neural activity right-lateralising from the outset. We consider that, despite A.’s young age, the presumed strong degree of language lateralisation and extensive structural damage limited her recovery. Although A.’s right hemisphere responded in a timely manner during word planning, its lexical and phonological retrieval abilities remained modest.

However, specific subregions found in the available literature vary. Hence, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of published lesion-based findings, obtained from studies with unique cohorts investigating brain areas critical for accuracy in naming in stroke patients at least 1 month post-onset. An anatomic likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of these LSM studies was performed. Ten papers entered the ALE meta-analysis, with similar lesion coverage over left temporal and left inferior frontal areas. This small number is a major limitation of the present study. Clusters were found in left anterior temporal lobe, posterior temporal lobe extending into inferior parietal areas, in line with the arcuate fasciculus, and in pre- and postcentral gyri and middle frontal gyrus. No clusters were found in left inferior frontal gyrus. These results were further substantiated by examining five naming studies that investigated performance beyond global accuracy, corroborating the ALE meta-analysis results. The present review and meta-analysis highlight the involvement of left temporal and inferior parietal cortices in naming, and of mid to posterior portions of the temporal lobe in particular in conceptual-lexical retrieval for speaking. 17 p.

Contains fulltext : 291849.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Background: Alcoholic cerebellar degeneration is a restricted form of cerebellar degeneration, clinically leading to an ataxia of stance and gait and occurring in the context of alcohol misuse in combination with malnutrition and thiamine depletion. However, a similar degeneration may also develop after non-alcoholic malnutrition, but evidence for a lasting ataxia of stance and gait and lasting abnormalities in the cerebellum is lacking in the few patients described with purely nutritional cerebellar degeneration (NCD). Methods: We present a case of a 46-year-old woman who developed NCD and Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) due to COVID-19 and protracted vomiting, resulting in thiamine depletion. We present her clinical course over the first 6 months after the diagnosis of NCD and WE, with thorough neuropsychological and neurological examinations, standardized clinical observations, laboratory investigations, and repeated MRIs. Results: We found a persistent ataxia of stance and gait and evidence for an irreversible restricted cerebellar degeneration. However, the initial cognitive impairments resolved. Conclusions: Our study shows that NCD without involvement of alcohol neurotoxicity and with a characteristic ataxia of stance and gait exists and may be irreversible. We did not find any evidence for lasting cognitive abnormalities or a cerebellar cognitive-affective syndrome (CCAS) in this patient. 15 p.

Abstract

Background: Neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) are common in older individuals, but the pathophysiological mechanisms causing these lesions remain poorly understood. Although hypertension is a major risk factor for SVD, the direct causal effects of increased blood pressure are unknown. The Hyperintense study is designed to examine cerebrovascular and structural abnormalities, possibly preceding SVD, in young adults with hypertension. These patients undergo a diagnostic work-up that requires patients to temporarily discontinue their antihypertensive agents, often leading to an increase in blood pressure followed by a decrease once effective medication is restarted. This allows examination of the effects of blood pressure increase and decrease on the cerebral small vessels. Methods: Hyperintense is a prospective observational cohort study in 50 hypertensive adults (18–55 years) who will temporarily discontinue antihypertensive medication for diagnostic purposes. MRI and clinical data is collected at four timepoints: before medication withdrawal (baseline), once antihypertensives are largely or completely withdrawn ( T = 1), when patients have restarted medication ( T = 2) and reached target blood pressure and 1 year later ( T = 3). The 3T MRI protocol includes conventional structural sequences and advanced techniques to assess various aspects of microvascular integrity, including blood-brain barrier function using Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI, white matter integrity, and microperfusion. Clinical assessments include motor and cognitive examinations and blood sampling. Discussion: The Hyperintense study will improve the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms following hypertension that may cause SVD. This knowledge can ultimately help to identify new targets for treatment of SVD, aimed at prevention or limiting disease progression.

Contains fulltext : 234931.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), the commonest dominantly inherited ataxia worldwide, is characterized by disruption in the cerebellar-cerebral and striatal-cortical networks. Findings on SCA3-associated cognitive impairments are mixed. The classification models, tests and scoring systems used, language, culture, ataxia severity, and depressive symptoms are all potential confounders in neuropsychological assessments and may have contributed to the heterogeneity of the neurocognitive profile of SCA3. We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating neurocognitive function in SCA3 patients. Of 1304 articles identified, 15 articles met the eligibility criteria. All articles were of excellent quality according to the National Institutes of Health quality assessment tool for case–control studies. In line with the disrupted cerebellar-cerebral and striatal-cortical networks in SCA3, this systematic review found that the neurocognitive profile of SCA3 is characterized by a core impairment of executive function that affects processes such as nonverbal reasoning, executive aspects of language, and recall. Conversely, neurocognitive domains such as general intelligence, verbal reasoning, semantic aspect of language, attention/processing speed, recognition, and visuospatial perception and construction are relatively preserved. This review highlights the importance of evaluating neurocognitive function in SCA3 patients. Abstract

Purpose: The three variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) differ in clinical presentation, underlying brain pathology, and clinical course, which stresses the need for early differentiation. However, brief cognitive tests that validly distinguish between all PPA variants are lacking. The Sydney Language Battery (SYDBAT) is a promising screening instrument that can be used as a first step in a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to distinguish PPA subtypes, but evidence on its validity and reliability is to date limited. In the current study, the validation and diagnostic value of the SYDBAT are described for discriminating PPA subtypes as well as distinguishing PPA from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Method: Forty-five patients with PPA (13 with semantic PPA, 20 with logopenic PPA, and 12 with nonfluent/agrammatic PPA), 25 MCI patients, 13 AD patients, and 50 cognitively unimpaired controls were included in this study. Both patients and controls completed the SYDBAT-NL (Dutch version). Performance on and predictive ability of the four subtests (i.e., Naming, Word Comprehension, Repetition, and Semantic Association) were assessed. In addition, construct validity and internal consistency were examined. Results: Different SYDBAT performance patterns were found across PPA and non-PPA patient groups. While a discriminant function analysis based on SYDBAT subtest scores could predict PPA subtype with 78% accuracy, it was more difficult to disentangle PPA from non-PPA patients based on SYDBAT scores alone. For assisting in clinical interpretation, simple rules were set up and translated into a diagnostic decision tree for subtyping PPA, which was capable of diagnosing a large proportion of the cases. Satisfying validity and reliability measures were found. Conclusions: The SYDBAT is an easy-to-use and promising screen for assessing single-word language processes, which may contribute to the differential diagnostic process of PPA and the assessment of language impairment in MCI and AD. It can be easily implemented for initial screening of patients in a memory clinic.

We explored personality and psychopathology dimensions as conceptualized in contemporary dimensional taxonomies (i.e., hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology; HiTOP) in adults with ASD without intellectual disability operationalized by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). METHOD: Applying secondary analytic processes using clinical data, we cross-examined the MMPI-2-RF profiles of adults with ASD (n = 28) compared to adults with Cluster C personality disorders (CCPD; n = 28) and a control group (n = 28) by conducting nonparametric tests and assessing effect sizes. RESULTS: The profiles of the ASD and CCPD groups evidenced to be similar, and both average clinical profiles diverged from the average control group profiles by elevated levels of demoralization, internalizing, and somatization symptomatology. There were small differences between the average profiles of adults with ASD and adults with CCPD. Additional research using dimensional measures of psychopathology could elucidate the dimensional phenotypes of ASD and CCPD. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results in this study, the MMPI-2-RF may not meaningfully discriminate between the two clinical presentations, with the exception of various externalizing scales. 12 p.

Yet little has been written about the specific charges he felt forced to respond to in Vienna, while visiting the German States, or in Paris, where he published his books. This article examines these accusations and Gall's responses. It also looks at what Gall wrote about a cortical faculty for God and religion and seeing intelligent design in the functional organization of the brain. Additionally, it presents what can be gleaned about his private thoughts on God and organized religion. We conclude that Gall was sincere in his admiration for and belief in God the Creator, but that as an enlightened scientist was recognizing the need to separate metaphysics from the laws of nature when presenting his new science of man. 21 p.

Several factors may explain these inconsistencies, including AD severity (e.g., dementia vs. Mild Cognitive Impairment; MCI) and priming paradigm-related characteristics. This systematic review and meta-analysis provides a quantitative summary of repetition priming in AD. We examined the between-group standard mean difference comparing repetition priming in AD dementia or amnestic MCI (aMCI; presumably due to AD) to controls. Thirty-two studies were selected, including 590 individuals with AD dementia, 267 individuals with amnestic MCI, and 703 controls. Our results indicated that both individuals with aMCI and AD dementia perform worse on repetition priming tasks than cognitively older adults. Paradigm-related moderators suggested that the effect size between studies comparing the combined aMCI or AD dementia group to cognitively healthy older adults was the highest for paradigms that required participants to produce, rather than identify, primes during the test phase. Our results further suggested that priming in AD is impaired for both conceptual and perceptual priming tasks. Lastly, while our results suggested that priming in AD is impaired for priming tasks that require deep processing, we were unable to draw firm conclusions about whether priming is less impaired in aMCI or AD dementia for paradigms that require shallow processing. 19 p.

We examined the psychometric characteristics of the SNQ-NL and its ability to differentiate between patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD; n = 23), Alzheimer's dementia (AD; n = 26), chronic psychiatric disorders (n = 27), and control participants (n = 92). Between-group differences in the Total score, Break errors, and Overadhere errors were examined and associations with demographic variables and other cognitive functions were explored. Results showed that the SNQ-NL Total Score and Break errors differed between patients with AD and bvFTD, but not between patients with bvFTD and psychiatric disorders. Modest correlations with age, sex, and education were observed. The SNQ-NL Total score and Break errors correlated significantly with emotion recognition and verbal fluency but not with processing speed or mental flexibility. In conclusion, the SNQ-NL has sufficient construct validity and can be used to investigate knowledge of social norms in clinical populations. 12 p.

Item does not contain fulltext The harm usually associated with psychopathy requires therapeutically, legally, and ethically satisfactory solutions. Scholars from different fields have, thus, examined whether empirical evidence shows that individuals with psychopathic traits satisfy concepts, such as responsibility, mental disorder, or disability, that have specific legal or ethical implications. The present paper considers the less discussed issue of whether psychopathy is a disability. As it has been shown for the cases of the responsibility and mental disorder status of psychopathic individuals, we argue that it is undecided whether psychopathy is a disability. Nonetheless, based on insights from disability studies and legislations, we propose that interventions to directly modify the propensities of individuals with psychopathic tendencies should be balanced with modifications of the social and physical environments to accommodate their peculiarities. We also suggest how this social approach in some practical contexts that involve non-offender populations might be effective in addressing some of the negative effects of psychopathy. 27 p.

In an attempt to measure such propositions, RFT researchers have developed the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP). It has been argued that the size of an IRAP effect may provide a metric for psychological inflexibility. The current study aimed to determine whether psychological inflexibility, as measured by the self-focused Natural Language-IRAP (NL-IRAP), would be higher in a clinical sample of individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD (N=29) when compared to a non-clinical sample. Subsequently, the study investigated whether the self-focused NL-IRAP could be used to predict the presence of a clinical diagnosis, using a ROC analysis. As predicted, higher levels of psychological inflexibility were observed for the clinical group. The self-focused NL-IRAP also correctly classified the presence of PTSD (AUC = 76%) with a sensitivity level of 79.3% and a specificity level of 59.2%.Overall, the use of the IRAP as a non-associative clinical measure appears promising. 11 p.

Abstract

Background: Longitudinal studies including parental distress when examining adverse health outcomes in adolescents with type 1 diabetes are lacking. This study examined whether parental depression and anxiety predict adolescent emotional distress and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) 1 year later and whether a relation between parental distress and HbA1c is mediated by the level of parental involvement in diabetes care and by treatment behaviors.Methods: Longitudinal path modeling was applied to data from 154 adolescents and parents from diabetes centers participating in the Longitudinal study of Emotional problems in Adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their Parents/caregivers (Diabetes LEAP). At baseline and 1-year follow-up, participants completed measures of depression and anxiety. HbA1c was extracted from medical charts. Responsibility and treatment behavior questionnaires were completed by adolescents at baseline.Results: Baseline parental depressive and anxiety symptoms were not associated with 1-year adolescent depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and HbA1c. Responsibility division and treatment behaviors did not mediate associations between parental emotional distress and 1-year HbA1c.Conclusions: Parental depressive and anxiety symptoms did not predict adolescent health outcomes 1 year later. Future studies may determine whether the link is present in case of mood/anxiety disorders or severe diabetes-specific distress, or whether adolescents are resilient in the face of parental distress.Impact: Adolescents with T1D are a vulnerable group in terms of psychological and health outcomes. Whether parental emotional distress (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) is prospectively associated with adolescent emotional distress and/or HbA1c has been understudied. Our results show that parental distress was not related to adolescent distress or HbA1c 1 year later.
