We applied a scientific approach to the problem of the effective area cross-calibration of the XMM-Newton EPIC instruments. Using a sample of galaxy clusters observed with the XMM-Newton EPIC, we quantified the effective area cross-calibration bias between the EPIC instruments as implemented in the public calibration data base on November 2021 in the 0.5-6.1 keV energy band. We invested significant efforts in controlling and minimising the systematic uncertainties of the cross-calibration bias below 1%. The statistical uncertainties are similar and thus we can reliably measure effects at 1% level. The effective area cross-calibration in the 0.5-6.1 keV band between MOS and pn is biased at a substantial level. The MOS/pn bias is systematic suggesting that MOS (pn) effective area may be calibrated too low (high), by $\sim$3-27% on average depending on the instrument and energy band. The excellent agreement of the energy dependencies (i.e. shapes) of the effective area of MOS2 and pn suggest that they are correctly calibrated within $\sim$1% in the 0.5-4.5 keV band. Comparison with an independent data set of point sources (3XMM) confirms this. The cluster sample indicates that the MOS1/pn effective area shape cross-calibration has an approximately linear bias amounting to $\sim$10% in maximum in the 0.5-4.5 keV band. The effective area cross-calibration of XMM-Newton/EPIC instruments on November 2021 in the 0.5-4.5 keV band is in a relatively good shape. However, the cluster-to-cluster rms scatter of the bias is substantial compared to the median bias itself. Thus, a statistically robust implementation of the cross-calibration uncertainties to a scientific analysis of XMM-Newton/EPIC data should include the propagation of the scatter to the best-fit parameters, instead of a simple average bias correction of the effective area., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. This paper presents an analysis of XMM X--ray spectra of the quasar 1ES 1553+113, in search for absorption lines from the intervening warm--hot intergalactic medium. A search for OVII, OVIII and NeIX resonance absorption lines was performed at eight fixed redshifts that feature OVI or HI broad Lyman--$\alpha$ absorption lines that were previously detected from HST data. The search yielded one possible detection of OVII at a redshift z=0.1877 with an OVI prior, with a statistical significance that is equivalent to a 2.6-$\sigma$ confidence level. The spectra were also stacked at the wavelengths of the expected redshifted OVII and OVIII lines, but the analysis did not reveal evidence for the presence of additional X--ray absorbing WHIM. Moreover, the spectra were used to investigate two putative OVII absorption lines that were detected serendipitously in an earlier analysis of the same data by F. Nicastro and collaborators. The paper also presents a comprehensive statistical framework for cosmological inferences from the analysis of absorption lines, which makes use of cosmological simulations for the joint probability distributions of FUV and X--ray ions. Accordingly, we conclude that the new possible OVII absorption at z=0.1877 is consistent with a contribution from the hot WHIM to the baryon density in an amount of $\Omega_{WHIM,X}/\Omega_b = 44\pm22$\%. However, there are large systematic uncertainties associated with the temperature and abundances of the absorbers, and only a larger sample of X-ray sources can provide an accurate determination of the cosmological density of the WHIM., Comment: MNRAS accepted, MN-22-4864-MJ.R2

A substantial fraction of the cosmic baryons is expected to hide in the form of diffuse warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), the majority of which resides in the filaments of the Cosmic Web and has proven very difficult to detect due to its low density. Close to galaxy clusters, the filament gas is affected by the cluster's gravitational potential and attains substantial infall velocities, eventually undergoing a termination shock which may boost its X-ray signal. We aim to identify the optimal locations of the enhanced X-ray emission and absorption arising from cluster-filament interactions, as well as improve our understanding of the various physical processes affecting the WHIM as it approaches the cluster. We applied the DisPerSE filament finder to the galaxy distribution in the surroundings of a Coma-like ($M_{200} \sim 10^{15.4}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$) simulated C-EAGLE galaxy cluster. We characterised the thermodynamic properties of the gas in such filaments as well as their dependence on distance from the cluster, and provided a physical interpretation for the results. The identified filaments account for $\sim 50$% of the hot WHIM ($T > 10^{5.5}$ K) in the cluster vicinity. The filament gas is in approximate free-fall all the way down to $\sim 2 \ r_{200}$ from the cluster, at which stage it begins to slow down due to the increasing pressure of the ambient gas. The deceleration is accompanied by the conversion of gas bulk kinetic energy into heat and the increase of density and temperature from the general Cosmic Web level of $\rho \sim 10\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^5-10^6$ K towards $\rho \sim 100\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^7-10^8$ K near the cluster boundary. The current observational status of the hot (log T(K) > 5.5) warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) remains incomplete. While recent observations from stacking large numbers of Cosmic Web filaments have yielded statistically significant detections, direct measurements of single objects remain scarce. The lack of such a sample currently prevents a robust analysis of the cosmic baryon content composed of the hot WHIM, which could help solve the cosmological missing baryons problem. To improve the search for the missing baryons, we used the EAGLE simulation. Our aim is to understand the metal enrichment and distribution of highly ionised metals in the Cosmic Web. We detected the filaments by applying the Bisous formalism to the simulated galaxies, and characterised the spatial distributions as well as mass and volume fractions of the filamentary oxygen and OVII. We then constructed OVII column density maps and determined their detectability with Athena X-IFU. However, the oxygen and OVII number densities drop fast beyond the virial radii of haloes, falling below detectable levels at 700 kpc. Thus, only ~1% of the filament volumes are filled with OVII at detectable densities. This non-homogeneous distribution of the OVII complicates its usage for tracing the missing baryons. Instead, OVII forms narrow envelopes around haloes. This localised nature results in a low chance (10-20% per sight line) of detecting intergalactic OVII with Athena X-IFU within the SDSS catalogue of filaments. With future filament samples from the 4MOST survey, the chances increase up to a level of ~50%. Nonetheless, based on EAGLE results, this would not be enough to conclusively solve the missing baryon problem, as it would be limited to a few times the virial radii of haloes. A fraction of the XMM-Newton/EPIC FOV is obscured by the dysfunctional (i.e. bad) pixels. The fraction varies between different EPIC instruments in a given observation. These complications affect the analysis of extended X-ray sources observed with XMM-Newton/EPIC and the consequent scientific interpretation of the results. For example, the accuracy of the widely used cosmological probe of the gas mass of clusters of galaxies depends on the accuracy of the procedure of removing the obscuration effect from the measured flux. The Science Analysis Software (SAS) includes an option for recovering the lost fraction of the flux measured by a primary instrument by utilising a supplementary image of the same source. The correction may be accurate if the supplementary image is minimally obscured at the locations of the bad pixels of the primary instrument. This can be achieved e.g. by using the observation-based MOS2 image for correcting the pn flux, or by using a synthetic model image. By utilising a sample of 27 galaxy cluster observations we evaluated the accuracy of the recovery method based on observed images, as implemented in SAS 18.0.0. We summarize the outcome of the 13th meeting of the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC), held at Tenuta dei Ciclamini (Avigliano Umbro, Italy) in April 2018. Fifty-one scientists directly involved in the calibration of operational and future high-energy missions gathered during 3.5 days to discuss the current status of the X-ray payload inter-calibration and possible approaches to improve it. This summary consists of reports from the various working groups with topics ranging from the identification and characterization of standard calibration sources, multi-observatory cross-calibration campaigns, appropriate and new statistical techniques, calibration of instruments and characterization of background, and communication and preservation of knowledge and results for the benefit of the astronomical community., Comment: 12 pages

The cosmological missing baryons at z<1 most likely hide in the hot (T$\gtrsim10^{5.5}$ K) phase of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). While the hot WHIM is hard to detect due to its high ionisation level, the warm (T$\lesssim10^{5.5}$ K) phase of the WHIM has been very robustly detected in the FUV band. We adopted the assumption that the hot and warm WHIM phases are co-located and thus used the FUV-detected warm WHIM as a tracer for the cosmologically interesting hot WHIM. We utilised the assumption by performing an X-ray follow-up in the sight line of a blazar PKS 2155-304 at the redshifts where previous FUV measurements of OVI, SiIV and BLA absorption have indicated the existence of the warm WHIM. We looked for the OVII He$\alpha$ and OVIII Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines, the most likely hot WHIM tracers. Despite of the very large exposure time ($\approx$ 1 Ms), the XMM-Newton/RGS1 data yielded no significant detection which corresponds to upper limits of $\log{N({\rm OVII})({\rm cm}^{-2}))} \le 14.5-15.2$ and $\log{N({\rm OVIII})({\rm cm}^{-2}))} \le 14.9-15.2$. An analysis of LETG/HRC data yielded consistent results. However, the LETG/ACIS data yielded a detection of an absorption line - like feature at $\lambda \approx$ 20 \AA\ at simple one parameter uncertainty - based confidence level of 3.7 $\sigma$, consistently with several earlier LETG/ACIS reports. Given the high statistical quality of the RGS1 data, the possibility of RGS1 accidentally missing the true line at $\lambda \sim$ 20 \AA\ is very low, 0.006%. Neglecting this, the LETG/ACIS detection can be interpreted as Ly$\alpha$ transition of OVIII at one of the redshifts (z$\approx$ 0.054) of FUV-detected warm WHIM. Given the very convincing X-ray spectral evidence for and against the existence of the $\lambda \sim$ 20 \AA\ feature, we cannot conclude whether or not it is a true astrophysical absorption line., Comment: Accepted for A&A

We summarize the outcome of the 12th meeting of the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC), held at the UCLA conference center in Lake Arrowhead (California) in March 2017. 56 scientists directly involved in the calibration of operational and future high-energy missions gathered during 3.5 days to discuss the status of the X-ray payload inter-calibration, as well as possible ways to improve it. The "Thermal Supernovas Remnant" (SNR) Working Group presented a recently published paper on 1E0102.2-7219 as a calibration standard in the 0.5-1.0 keV band. A new method to measure the high-energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula and pulsar with NuSTAR without using its optics may yield a new absolute flux standard in the 3-7 keV band. A new ACIS contamination model - released with CALDB version 4.7.3 - leads to a significant improvement in modeling the spectral, spatial, and temporal properties of the contaminant. The first calibration results of the scientific payload on board Hitomi confirm the excellent performance of the instruments before the spacecraft operation problems leading to its loss. Finally, the meeting discussed extensively a novel statistic approach to formally identify in which direction the effective areas of different instruments would need to be changed to bring them into concordance. FUV observations have revealed the transition temperature gas (TTG; $\log{T({\mathrm{K}})}$ ~ 5), located in the lower Galactic halo and in the High Velocity Clouds. However, the corresponding X-ray absorption has so far remained mostly undetected. In order to make an improvement in this respect in Galactic X-ray absorption studies, we accumulated very deep (~3 Ms) spectra of the blazar PKS 2155-304 obtained with the spectrometers RGS1, RGS2, LETG/HRC and LETG/ACIS-S and studied the absorption lines due to the intervening Galactic components. The very high quality of the data and the coverage of important wavelengths with at least two independent instruments allowed us to reliably detect ten Galactic lines with better than 99.95% confidence. We discovered significant absorption from blended OIV transitions 1s-2p $^2$S (22.571 \AA ), 1s-2p $^2$P (22.741 \AA ) and 1s-2p $^2$D (22.777 \AA ), and from the OV transition 1s-2p (22.370 \AA ) from TTG at $\log{T({\mathrm{K}})} \thinspace = \thinspace 5.2\pm0.1$. A joint X-ray and FUV analysis indicated that photoionisation is negligible for this component and that the gas is in a cooling transition phase. However, the temperature is high enough that the column density ratio N(OIV)/N(OV) is not significantly different from that in collisional ionisation equilibrium (CIE). Under CIE we obtained $N_{\mathrm{OIV}}$= 3.6$\pm$2.0 $\times 10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, corresponding to $N_{\mathrm{H}}$ = 1.0$\pm$0.5 $\times 10^{19} \frac{Z_{\odot}}{Z_{\mathrm{TTG}}}$ cm$^{-2}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

(Abridged) We have analyzed Chandra LETG and XMM-Newton RGS spectra towards the z=0.177 quasar PG 1116+215, a sightline that is rendered particularly interesting by the HST detection of several OVI and HI broad Lyman-alpha absorption lines that may be associated with the warm-hot intergalactic medium. We performed a search for resonance K-alpha absorption lines from OVII and OVIII at the redshifts of the detected far-ultraviolet lines. We detected an absorption line in the Chandra spectra at 5.2 sigma confidence level at wavelengths corresponding to OVIII K-alpha at z=0.0911+-0.0004+-0.0005 (statistical followed by systematic error). This redshift is within 3 sigma of that of a HI broad Lyman-alpha of b=130 km/s at z=0.09279+-0.00005. We have also analyzed the available XMM-Newton RGS data towards PG 1116+215. Unfortunately, the XMM-Newton data are not suitable to investigate this line because of instrumental features at the wavelengths of interest. At the same redshift, the Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra have OVII K-alpha absorption line features of significance 1.5 sigma and 1.8 sigma, respectively. We also analyzed the available SDSS spectroscopic galaxy survey data towards PG 1116+215 in the redshift range of interest. We found evidence for a galaxy filament that intersects the PG 1116+215 sightline and additional galaxy structures that may host WHIM. The combination of HST, Chandra, XMM-Newton and SDSS data indicates that we have likely detected a multi-temperature WHIM at z=0.091-0.093 towards PG 1116+215., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We propose a new approach to the missing baryons problem. Building on the common assumption that the missing baryons are in the form of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), we further assumed here that the galaxy luminosity density can be used as a tracer of the WHIM. The latter assumption is supported by our finding of a significant correlation between the WHIM density and the galaxy luminosity density in the hydrodynamical simulations of Cui et al. (2012). We further found that the fraction of the gas mass in the WHIM phase is substantially (by a factor of $\sim$1.6) higher within the large scale galactic filaments, i.e. $\sim$70\%, compared to the average in the full simulation volume of $\sim$0.1\,Gpc$^3$. The relation between the WHIM overdensity and the galaxy luminosity overdensity within the galactic filaments is consistent with linear: $\delta_{\rm whim}\,=\,0.7\,\pm\,0.1\,\times\,\delta_\mathrm{LD}^{0.9 \pm 0.2}$. We applied our procedure to the line of sight to the blazar H2356-309 and found evidence for the WHIM in correspondence of the Sculptor Wall (z $\sim$0.03 and $\log{N_H}$ = $19.9^{+0.1}_{-0.3}$) and Pisces-Cetus superclusters (z $\sim$0.06 and $\log{N_H}$ = $19.7^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$), in agreement with the redshifts and column densities of the X-ray absorbers identified and studied by Fang et al. (2010) and Zappacosta et al. (2010). This agreement indicates that the galaxy luminosity density and galactic filaments are reliable signposts for the WHIM and that our method is robust in estimating the WHIM density. The signal that we detected cannot originate from the halos of the nearby galaxies since they cannot account for the large WHIM column densities that our method and X-ray analysis consistently find in the Sculptor Wall and Pisces-Cetus superclusters., Comment: Accepted for Astronomy & Astrophysics

We have developed a new method to approach the missing baryons problem. We assume that the missing baryons reside in a form of Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium, i.e. the WHIM. Our method consists of (a) detecting the coherent large scale structure in the spatial distribution of galaxies that traces the Cosmic Web and that in hydrodynamical simulations is associated to the WHIM, (b) map its luminosity into a galaxy luminosity density field, (c) use numerical simulations to relate the luminosity density to the density of the WHIM, (d) apply this relation to real data to trace the WHIM using the observed galaxy luminosities in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF redshift surveys. In our application we find evidence for the WHIM along the line of sight to the Sculptor Wall, at redshifts consistent with the recently reported X-ray absorption line detections. Our indirect WHIM detection technique complements the standard method based on the detection of characteristic X-ray absorption lines, showing that the galaxy luminosity density is a reliable signpost for the WHIM. For this reason, our method could be applied to current galaxy surveys to optimise the observational strategies for detecting and studying the WHIM and its properties. Our estimates of the WHIM hydrogen column density in Sculptor agree with those obtained via the X-ray analysis. Cosmological constraints from clusters rely on accurate gravitational mass estimates, which strongly depend on cluster gas temperature measurements. Therefore, systematic calibration differences may result in biased, instrument-dependent cosmological constraints. This is of special interest in the light of the tension between the Planck results of the primary temperature anisotropies of the CMB and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich plus X-ray cluster counts analyses. We quantify in detail the systematics and uncertainties of the cross-calibration of the effective area between five X-ray instruments, EPIC-MOS1/MOS2/PN onboard XMM-Newton and ACIS-I/S onboard Chandra, and the influence on temperature measurements. Furthermore, we assess the impact of the cross calibration uncertainties on cosmology. Using the HIFLUGCS sample, consisting of the 64 X-ray brightest galaxy clusters, we constrain the ICM temperatures through spectral fitting in the same, mostly isothermal, regions and compare them. Our work is an extension to a previous one using X-ray clusters by the IACHEC. Performing spectral fitting in the full energy band we find that best-fit temperatures determined with XMM-Newton/EPIC are significantly lower than Chandra/ACIS temperatures. We demonstrate that effects like multitemperature structure and different relative sensitivities of the instruments at certain energy bands cannot explain the observed differences. We conclude that using XMM-Newton/EPIC, instead of Chandra/ACIS to derive full energy band temperature profiles for cluster mass determination results in an 8% shift towards lower OmegaM values and <1% shift towards higher sigma8 values in a cosmological analysis of a complete sample of galaxy clusters. As the nodes of the cosmic web, clusters of galaxies trace the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe. They are thus privileged sites in which to investigate the complex physics of structure formation. However, the complete story of how these structures grow, and how they dissipate the gravitational and non-thermal components of their energy budget over cosmic time, is still beyond our grasp. Fundamental questions such as How do hot diffuse baryons accrete and dynamically evolve in dark matter potentials? How and when was the energy that we observe in the ICM generated and distributed? Where and when are heavy elements produced and how are they circulated? are still unanswered. Most of the cluster baryons exists in the form of a diffuse, hot, metal-enriched plasma that radiates primarily in the X-ray band (the intracluster medium, ICM), allowing the X-ray observations of the evolving cluster population to provide a unique opportunity to address these topics. Athena+ with its large collecting area and unprecedented combination of high spectral and angular resolution offers the only way to make major advances in answering these questions. Athena+ will show how the baryonic gas evolves in the dark matter potential wells by studying the motions and turbulence in the ICM. Athena+ will be able to resolve the accreting region both spatially and spectroscopically, probing the true nature and physical state of the X-ray emitting plasma. We extend a previous cross-calibration study by the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC) on XMM-Newton/EPIC, Chandra/ACIS and BeppoSAX/MECS X-ray instruments with clusters of galaxies to Suzaku/XIS instruments. Our aim is to study the accuracy of the energy-dependent effective area calibration of the XIS instruments by comparison of spectroscopic temperatures, fluxes and fit residuals obtained with Suzaku/XIS and XMM-Newton/EPIC-pn for the same cluster. The temperatures measured in the hard 2.0-7.0 keV energy band with all instruments are consistent within 5 %. However, temperatures obtained with the XIS instruments in the soft 0.5-2.0 keV band disagree by 9-29 %. We investigated residuals in the XIS soft band, which showed that if XIS0 effective area shape is accurately calibrated, the effective areas of XIS1 and XIS3 are overestimated below 1.0 keV (or vice versa). Adjustments to the modelling of the column density of the XIS contaminant in the 3-6 arcmin extraction region while forcing consistent emission models in each instrument for a given cluster significantly improved the fits. The oxygen column density in XIS1 and XIS3 contaminant must be increased by 1-2E17 cm^-2 in comparison to the values implemented in the current calibration, while the column density of the XIS0 contaminant given by the analysis is consistent with the public calibration. XIS soft band temperatures obtained with the modification to the column density of the contaminant agree better with temperatures obtained with the EPIC-pn instrument of XMM-Newton, than with those derived using the Chandra-ACIS instrument. However, comparison of hard band fluxes obtained using Suzaku-XIS to fluxes obtained using the Chandra-ACIS and EPIC-pn instruments proved inconclusive., Comment: 24 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The hierarchical formation of clusters of galaxies by accretion of material releases gravitational energy which dissipates into the intracluster gas. The process heats the material and generates gas turbulence and bulk motions and thus kinetic pressure. Mapping the velocity fields of the moving subunits would enable a new diagnostics tool for cluster formation studies and unbiased X-ray mass estimates. The required spatially resolved high resolution spectroscopy is not currently available. I demonstrate here the feasibility of detecting and mapping the velocities of the bulk motions using the Doppler shift of the Fe XXV K alpha line with the proposed ATHENA satellite., Comment: Accepted for Astronomische Nachrichten

We report the first Chandra detection of emission out to the virial radius in the cluster Abell 1835 at z=0.253. Our analysis of the soft X-ray surface brightness shows that emission is present out to a radial distance of 10 arcmin or 2.4 Mpc, and the temperature profile has a factor of ten drop from the peak temperature of 10 keV to the value at the virial radius. We model the Chandra data from the core to the virial radius and show that the steep temperature profile is not compatible with hydrostatic equilibrium of the hot gas, and that the gas is convectively unstable at the outskirts. A possible interpretation of the Chandra data is the presence of a second phase of warm-hot gas near the cluster's virial radius that is not in hydrostatic equilibrium with the cluster's potential. In this paper we present simulated solar coronal X-ray observations to verify the sensitivity of a new hypothetical instrument design. These simulations are folded through this X-ray spectrometer having a moderate size circular field of view of 1.6 degrees. This SCXM (Solar Coronal X-ray Mapper) is designed to compose of a single pixel silicon PIN detector equipped with a single reflection double frustum X-ray optics. A moderate FoV would enable a morphological study of the expanded X-ray emission from the solar corona during a high activity of the Sun. The main scientific task of SCXM would be the mapping of the coronal X-ray emission, i.e. to resolve the radial distribution of the X-ray surface brightness around the Sun. These kind of off-limb observations would help to interpret the coronal plasma diagnostics as a function of the elongation angle. Direct solar full disc observations could be also performed with SCXM. In this work we have applied real solar coronal X-ray data obtained by the SMART-1 XSM (X-ray Solar Monitor) to simulate on-solar observations at different flux levels to derive full disc sensitivity and performance of SCXM. A challenging attempt for SCXM would also be to distinguish the X-ray spectrum of the decaying axions around the Sun. These axions are assumed to be created as side products of fusion reactions in the core of the Sun. These axions are predicted to be gravitationally trapped to orbit the Sun forming a halo-like X-ray emitting object. No signature of an axion X-ray emission around the Sun has been observed to this day. This simple X-ray spectrometer with an optical concentrator would be an inexpensive instrument with low mass and telemetry budgets compared with more accurate X-ray instruments of imaging capability. We present first results on PLCK G266.6-27.3, a galaxy cluster candidate detected at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5 in the Planck All Sky survey. An XMM-Newton validation observation has allowed us to confirm that the candidate is a bona fide galaxy cluster. With these X-ray data we measure an accurate redshift, z = 0.94 +/- 0.02, and estimate the cluster mass to be M_500 = (7.8 +/- 0.8)e+14 solar masses. PLCK G266.6-27.3 is an exceptional system: its luminosity of L_X(0.5-2.0 keV)=(1.4 +/- 0.05)e+45 erg/s, equals that of the two most luminous known clusters in the z > 0.5 universe, and it is one of the most massive clusters at z~1. Moreover, unlike the majority of high-redshift clusters, PLCK G266.6-27.3 appears to be highly relaxed. We analysed the Suzaku XIS1 data of the A3112 cluster of galaxies in order to examine the X-ray excess emission in this cluster reported earlier with the XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites. The best-fit temperature of the intracluster gas depends strongly on the choice of the energy band used for the spectral analysis. This proves the existence of excess emission component in addition to the single-temperature MEKAL in A3112. We showed that this effect is not an artifact due to uncertainties of the background modeling, instrument calibration or the amount of Galactic absorption. Neither does the PSF scatter of the emission from the cool core nor the projection of the cool gas in the cluster outskirts produce the effect. Finally we modeled the excess emission either by using an additional MEKAL or powerlaw component. Due to the small differencies between thermal and non-thermal model we can not rule out the non-thermal origin of the excess emission based on the goodness of the fit. Assuming that it has a thermal origin, we further examined the Differential Emission Measure (DEM) models. We utilised two different DEM models, a Gaussian differential emission measure distribution (GDEM) and WDEM model, where the emission measure of a number of thermal components is distributed as a truncated power law. The best-fit XIS1 MEKAL temperature for the 0.4-7.0 keV band is 4.7+-0.1 keV, consistent with that obtained using GDEM and WDEM models., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted to A&A

We used a sample of 11 nearby relaxed clusters of galaxies observed with the X-ray instruments XMM-Newton (EPIC) pn and MOS, Chandra ACIS-S and ACIS-I and BeppoSAX MECS to examine the cross-calibration of the energy dependence and normalisation of the effective area of these instruments as of December 2009. We also examined the Fe XXV/XXVI line ratio temperature measurement method for the pn and MOS. We performed X-ray spectral analysis on the XMM-Newton and Chandra data for a sample of 11 clusters. We obtained the information for BeppoSAX from DeGrandi & Molendi (2002). We compared the spectroscopic results obtained with different instruments for the same clusters in order to examine possible systematic calibration effects between the instruments. We did not detect any significant systematic differences between the temperatures derived in the 2-7 keV band using the different instruments. Also, the EPIC temperatures derived from the bremsstrahlung continuum agreed with those obtained from the Fe XXV/XXVI emission line ratio, implying that the energy dependence of the hard band effective area of the above instruments is accurately calibrated. On the other hand, the hard band EPIC/ACIS fluxes disagreed by 5-10% (i.e. at 6-25 sigma level) which indicates a similar level of uncertainty in the normalisations of the effective areas of these instruments in the 2--7 keV band. In the soft energy band (0.5-2.0 keV) there are greater cross-calibration differences between EPIC and ACIS. Due to the high statistical weight of the soft band data, the 0.5-7.0 keV band temperature measurements of clusters of galaxies with EPIC or ACIS are uncertain by ~10-15% on average., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

VLA observations at 1477 MHz revealed the presence of a radio mini-halo surrounding the faint central point-like radio source in the Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies. In this work we present a study of the radio emission from this cluster of galaxies at lower radio frequencies. We observed the Ophiuchus cluster at 153, 240, and 614 MHz with the GMRT. The mini-halo is clearly detected at 153 and 240 MHz while it is not detected at 610 MHz. The most prominent feature at low frequencies is a patch of diffuse steep spectrum emission located at about 5' south-east from the cluster center. By combining these images with that at 1477 MHz, we derived the spectral index of the mini-halo. Globally, the mini-halo has a low-frequency spectral index of alpha_240^153 ~1.4 +/- 0.3 and an high-frequency spectral index of alpha_1477^240 ~ 1.60 +/- 0.05. Moreover, we measure a systematic increase of the high-frequency spectral index with radius: the azimuthal radial average of alpha_1477^240 increases from about 1.3, at the cluster center, up to about 2.0 in the mini-halo outskirts. The observed radio spectral index is in agreement with that obtained by modeling the non-thermal hard X-ray emission in this cluster of galaxies. We assume that the X-ray component arises from inverse Compton scattering between the photons of the cosmic microwave background and a population of non-thermal electrons which are isotropically distributed and whose energy spectrum is a power law with index p. We derive that the electrons energy spectrum should extend from a minimum Lorentz factor of gamma_min < 700 up to a maximum Lorentz factor of gamma_max =3.8 x 10^4 with an index p=3.8 +/- 0.4. We investigated the non-thermal hard X-ray emission in the Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies. Our aim was to characterise the physical properties of the non-thermal component and its interaction with the cosmic microwave background. We performed spatially resolved spectroscopy and imaging using XMM-Newton data to model the thermal emission. Combining this with INTEGRAL ISGRI data, we modeled the 0.6-140 keV band total emission in the central 7 arcmin region. The models that best describe both PN and ISGRI data contain a power-law component with a photon index in a range 2.2-2.5. This component produces ~10% of the total flux in the 1-10 keV band. The pressure of the non-thermal electrons is ~1% of that of the thermal electrons. Our results support the scenario whereby a relativistic electron population, which produces the recently detected radio mini-halo in Ophiuchus, also produces the hard X-rays via inverse compton scattering of the CMB photons. The best-fit models imply a differential momentum spectrum of the relativistic electrons with a slope of 3.4-4.0 and a magnetic field strength B=0.05-0.15 microG. We have fitted ~200 RXTE and INTEGRAL spectra of the neutron star LMXB GX 9+9 from 2002-2007 with a model consisting of a disc blackbody and another blackbody representing the spreading layer (SL), i.e. an extended accretion zone on the NS surface as opposed to the more traditional disc-like boundary layer. Contrary to theory, the SL temperature was seen to increase towards low SL luminosities, while the approximate angular extent had a nearly linear luminosity dependency. Comptonization was not required to adequately fit these spectra. Together with the ~70 degree upper bound of inclination implied by the lack of eclipses, the best-fitting normalization of the accretion disc blackbody component implies a distance of ~10 kpc, instead of the usually quoted 5 kpc., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

An excess over the extrapolation to the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray ranges of the thermal emission from the hot intracluster medium has been detected in a number of clusters of galaxies. Recent observations of high energy (> 20 keV) X-ray emission in a few clusters of galaxies broaden our knowledge of physical phenomena in the intracluster space. This emission is likely to be nonthermal, probably resulting from Compton scattering of relativistic electrons by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Direct evidence for the presence of relativistic electrons in some 50 clusters comes from measurements of extended radio emission in their central regions. We briefly review the main results from observations of extended regions of radio emission, and Faraday rotation measurements of background and cluster radio sources. The main focus of the review are searches for nonthermal X-ray emission conducted with past and currently operating satellites, which yielded appreciable evidence for nonthermal emission components in the spectra of a few clusters. This evidence is clearly not unequivocal, due to substantial observational and systematic uncertainties, in addition to virtually complete lack of spatial information. If indeed the emission has its origin in Compton scattering of relativistic electrons by the CMB, then the mean magnetic field strength and density of relativistic electrons in the cluster can be directly determined. We present the work of an international team at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern that worked together to review the current observational and theoretical status of the non-virialised X-ray emission components in clusters of galaxies. The subject is important for the study of large-scale hierarchical structure formation and to shed light on the "missing baryon" problem. The topics of the team work include thermal emission and absorption from the warm-hot intergalactic medium, non-thermal X-ray emission in clusters of galaxies, physical processes and chemical enrichment of this medium and clusters of galaxies, and the relationship between all these processes. One of the main goals of the team is to write and discuss a series of review papers on this subject. These reviews are intended as introductory text and reference for scientists wishing to work actively in this field. Chandra ACIS-S observations of the galaxy cluster A3112 feature the presence of an excess of X-ray emission above the contribution from the diffuse hot gas, which can be equally well modeled with an additional non-thermal power-law model or with a low-temperature thermal model of low metal abundance. We show that the excess emission cannot be due to uncertainties in the background subtraction or in the Galactic HI column density. Calibration uncertainties in the ACIS detector that may affect our results are addressed by comparing the Chandra data to XMM MOS and PN spectra. While differences between the three instruments remain, all detect the excess in similar amounts, providing evidence against an instrumental nature of the excess. Given the presence of non-thermal radio emission near the center of A3112, we argue that the excess X-ray emission is of non-thermal nature and distributed throughout the entire X-ray bandpass, from soft to hard X-rays. The excess can be explained with the presence of a population of relativistic electrons with ~7% of the cluster's gas pressure. We analyze four XMM-Newton galaxy clusters in order to test whether their soft X-ray excess emission in the 0.2-0.5 keV band as reported by Kaastra et al. (2003) maintains after the application of the current knowledge of the XMM-Newton background and calibration. We show that in the bright central 500 kpc regions the details of the background modeling are insignificant. Thus, the cluster soft excess is not a background artifact, contrary to recent claims by Bregman et al. (2006). We find evidence that the change in PN calibration between years 2002 and 2005 results in significant decrease of the soft excess signal. However, the MOS instruments measure significant amounts of soft excess, or sub-Galactic NH. These differences are compatible with the current level of uncertainty in the calibration of both instruments., Comment: ApJ in press, minor stylistic changes

We use XMM-Newton blank-sky and closed-cover background data to explore the background subtraction methods for large extended sources filling the EPIC field of view, such as nearby galaxy clusters, for which local background estimation is difficult. We find that to keep the 0.8-7.0 keV band background modeling uncertainty tolerable, one has to use a much more restrictive filter than that commonly applied. In particular, because flares have highly variable spectra, not all of them are identified by filtering the E>10 keV light curve. We tried using the outer part of the EPIC FOV for monitoring the background in a softer band (1-5 keV). We find that one needs to discard the time periods when either the hard-band or the soft-band rate exceeds the nominal value by more than 20% in order to limit the 90% CL background uncertainty to between 5% at E=4-7 keV and 20% at E=0.8-1 keV, for both MOS and PN. This compares to a 10-30% respective PN uncertainty when only the hard-band light curve is used for filtering, and to a 15-45% PN uncertainty when applying the commonly used 2-3 sigma filtering method. We illustrate our method on a nearby cluster A1795. The above background uncertainties convert into the systematic temperature uncertainties between 1% at r=3-4 arcmin and 20--25% (~1 keV for A1795) at r=10-15 arcmin. For comparison, the commonly applied 2-3 sigma clipping of the hard-band light curve misses a significant amount of flares, rendering the temperatures beyond r=10 arcmin unconstrained. Several nearby clusters exhibit an excess of soft X-ray radiation which cannot be attributed to the hot virialized intra-cluster medium. There is no consensus to date on the origin of the excess emission: it could be either of thermal origin, or due to an inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background. Using high resolution XMM-Newton data of Sersic 159-03 we first show that strong soft excess emission is detected out to a radial distance of 0.9 Mpc. The data are interpreted using the two viable models available, i.e., by invoking a warm reservoir of thermal gas, or relativistic electrons which are part of a cosmic ray population. The thermal interpretation of the excess emission, slightly favored by the goodness-of-fit analysis, indicates that the warm gas responsible for the emission is high in mass and low in metallicity., Comment: ApJ in press

The evolution with redshift of the temperature-luminosity relation of X-ray galaxy clusters is a key ingredient to break degeneracies in the interpretation of X-ray clusters redshift number counts. We therefore take advantage of the recent measurements of the temperature-luminosity relation of distant clusters observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites to examine theoretical number counts expected for different available X-rays cluster samples, namely the RDCS, EMSS, SHARC, 160deg^2 and the MACS at redshift greater than 0.3. We derive these counts without any adjustment, using models previously normalized to the local temperature distribution function and to the high-z (z = 0.33) TDF. We find that these models having Omega_M in the range [0.85-1.] predict counts in remarkable agreement with the observed counts in the different samples. We illustrate that this conclusion is weakly sensitive to the various ingredients of the modeling. Therefore number counts provide a robust evidence of an evolving population. A realistic flat low density model (Omega_M = 0.3), normalized to the local abundance of clusters is found to overproduce cluster abundance at high redshift (above z = 0.5) by nearly an order of magnitude. This result is in conflict with the popular concordance model. We study the X-ray emission in a sample of galaxy clusters using the BeppoSAX PDS instrument in the 20 -- 80 keV energy band. The non-thermal hard X-ray cluster emission (HXR) is detected at a 2 sigma level in 50% of the non-significantly AGN-contaminated clusters: A2142, A2199, A2256, A3376, Coma, Ophiuchus and Virgo. The data are consistent with a scenario whereby relaxed clusters have no hard X-ray component of non-thermal origin, whereas merger clusters do, with a 20-80 keV luminosity of 10^(43-44) erg/s. The co-added spectrum of the above clusters indicates a power-law spectrum for the HXR with a photon index of 2.8+0.3-0.4 in the 12-115 keV band, and we find indication that it has extended distribution. These indications argue against significant contamination from obscured AGN, which have harder spectra and centrally concentrated distribution. These results are supportive of the assumption of the merger shock acceleration of electrons in clusters. Assuming that the Cosmic Microwave Background photons experience Inverse Compton scattering from the merger-accelerated relativistic electrons, and thus produce the observed HXR, the measured hard X-ray slope corresponds to a differential momentum spectra of the relativistic electrons with a slope of mu = 3.8-5.0. The observed slope of HXR is also consistent with that predicted by the non-thermal bremsstrahlung, which thus cannot be ruled by the fit to the current data, even though this model requires an extreme, untenable cluster energetics. Assuming centrally concentrated distribution of HXR, the data requires a harder slope for the HXR spectrum, which is consistent with secondary electron models, but this model yields a worse fit to the PDS data and thus seems to be disfavored over the primary electron Inverse Compton model., Comment: ApJ in press, 19 pages, 5 figures

We present results on the spectroscopic analysis of XMM-Newton EPIC data of the central 0.5/h_50 Mpc regions of the clusters of galaxies Coma, A1795 and A3112. The temperature of the hot intracluster gas as determined by modeling the 2 - 7 keV PN and MOS data is consistent with that inferred from the FeXXV-FeXXVI line ratio. A significant warm emission component at a level above the systematic uncertainties is evident in the data and confirmed by ROSAT PSPC data for Coma and A1795. The non-thermal origin of the phenomenon cannot be ruled out at the current level of calibration accuracy, but the thermal model fits the data significantly better, with temperatures in the range of 0.6 -- 1.3 keV and electron densities of the order of 10^{-4} -- 10^{-3} cm^{-3}. In the outer parts of the clusters the properties of the warm component are marginally consistent with the results of recent cosmological simulations, which predict a large fraction of the current epoch's bayons located in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). However, the derived densities are too high in the cluster cores, compared to WHIM simulations, and thus more theoretical work is needed to fully understand the origin of the observed soft X-ray excess., Comment: ApJ in press, 14 pages, 4 color figures WHIM discussion modified

The study of soft X-ray emission of 38 X-ray selected galaxy clusters observed by ROSAT PSPC indicates that the soft excess phenomenon may be a common occurrence in galaxy clusters. Excess soft X-ray radiation, above the contribution from the hot intra-cluster medium, is evident in a large fraction of sources, and is clearly detected with large statistical significance in the deepest observations. The investigation relies on new, high resolution 21 cm HI observations. The sample selection also features analysis of infra-red images, to further ensure reliability of results with respect to the characteristics of Galactic absorption. The possibility of background or calibration effects as cause of the excess emission is likewise investigated; a detailed analysis of the distribution of the excess emission with respect to detector position and Galactic HI column density shows that the excess emission is a genuine celestial phenomenon. We find evidence for a preferential distribution of the soft excess emission at distances larger than ~150-200 kpc from the centers of clusters; this behavior may be naturally explained in the context of a non-thermal Inverse-Compton scenario. Alternatively, we propose that the phenomenon may be caused by thermal emission of very large-scale `warm' filaments seen in recent hydrodynamic simulations. This new interpretation relieves the very demanding requirements of either the traditional intra-cluster `warm' gas and the non-thermal scenarios. We also investigate the possibility of the soft excess originating from unresolved, X-ray faint cluster galaxies., Comment: ApJ in press

We report on a 20 ksec XMM observation of the distant cluster RXJ1120.1+4318, discovered at z=0.6 in the SHARC survey. The cluster has a regular spherical morphology, suggesting it is in a relaxed state. The combined fit of the EPIC/MOS&pn camera gives a cluster mean temperature of kT=5.3\pm0.5 keV with an iron abundance of 0.47\pm0.19. The temperature profile, measured for the first time at such a redshift, is consistent with an isothermal atmosphere up to half the virial radius. The surface brightness profile, measured nearly up to the virial radius, is well fitted by a beta-model, with beta =0.78[+0.06,-0.04] and a core radius of thetac = 0.44[+0.06,-0.04] arcmin. We compared the properties of RXJ1120.1+4318 with the properties of nearby clusters for two cosmological models: an Einstein - de Sitter Universe and a flat low density Universe with Omega0=0.3. For both models, the scaled emission measure profile beyond the core, the gas mass fraction and luminosity are consistent with the expectations of the self-similar model of cluster formation, although a slightly better agreement is obtained for a low density Universe. There is no evidence of a central cooling flow, in spite of the apparent relaxed state of the cluster. This is consistent with its estimated cooling time, larger than the age of the Universe at the cluster redshift. The entropy profile shows a flat core with a central entropy of ~ 140 keV cm^2, remarkably similar to the entropy floor observed in nearby clusters, and a rising profile beyond typically 0.1 virial radius. The abundance of high-redshift galaxy clusters depends sensitively on the matter density $\OmM$ and, to a lesser extent, on the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. Measurements of this abundance therefore constrain these fundamental cosmological parameters, and in a manner independent and complementary to other methods, such as observations of the cosmic microwave background and distance measurements. Cluster abundance is best measured by the X-ray temperature function, as opposed to luminosity, because temperature and mass are tightly correlated, as demonstrated by numerical simulations. During an XMM-Newton observation of the galactic supernova remnant G21.5-09 a bright, previously uncatalogued, source (XMMU J183225.4-103645) was detected 18 arcmin from G21.5-09. The European Photon Imaging Camera data inside 1 arcmin (180/h_50 kpc) radius are consistent with a source at a redshift of 0.1242 [+0.0003, -0.0022] with an optically thin thermal spectrum of temperature 5.8 +- 0.6 keV and a metal abundance of 0.60 +- 0.10 solar. This model gives a 2 - 10 keV luminosity of 3.5[+0.8, -0.4]/h_50^2 10^44 erg/s. These characteristics, as well as the source extent of 2.0 arcmin (350/h_50 kpc), and the surface brightness profile are consistent with emission from the central region of a moderately rich cluster containing a cooling flow with mass flow rate of 400-600 M_Sun/yr. The absorption is 7.9 +- 0.5 10^22 atom/cm^2, 5 times that inferred from low-resolution HI data but consistent with higher spatial resolution infrared dust extinction estimates. XMMU J183225.4-103645 is not visible in earlier ROSAT observations due to high amount of absorption. This discovery demonstrates the capability of XMM-Newton to map the cluster distribution close to the Galactic plane, where few such systems are known. The ability of XMM-Newton to determine cluster redshifts to 1% precision at z = 0.1 is especially important in optically crowded and absorbed fields such as close to the Galactic plane, where the optical redshift measurements of galaxies are difficult., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, source name corrected

Excess soft X-ray emission in clusters of galaxies has so far been detected for sources that lie along lines-of-sight to very low Galactic HI column density (such as Coma, A1795, A2199 and Virgo, N_H 0.9-2.0 10^{20} cm-2). We show that the cluster soft excess emission can be investigated even at higher N_H, which provides an opportunity for investigating soft X-ray emission characteristics among a large number of clusters. The ROSAT PSPC analysis of some members of the Shapley concentration (A3571, A3558, A3560 and A3562, at N_H 4-4.5 10^{20} cm-2) bears evidence for excess emission in the 1/4 keV band. We were able to confirm the finding for the case of A3571 by a pointed SAX observation. Within the current sample the soft X-ray flux is again found to be consistently above the level expected from a hot virialized plasma. We present BeppoSAX results of a spatially resolved spectral analysis of A3571, a relaxed nearby cluster of galaxies. In the central 2' (130/h_50 kpc) radius the metal abundance is 0.49 +- 0.08 solar and the absorption (1.13 +-0.28) x 10^21 atom/cm^2 whereas elsewhere within an 8'(520/h_50 kpc) radius the abundance is 0.32 \+- 0.05 solar and the absorption consistent with the galactic value of 4.4 x 10^20 atom/cm2. The significant central metal abundance enhancement is consistent with the supernova enrichment scenario. The excess absorption may be attributed to the cooling flow, whose mass flow rate is 80 +- 40 M_Sun/yr from our spectral fit. The BeppoSAX and ASCA radial temperature profiles agree over the entire overlapping radial range r < 25' = 1.6/h_50 Mpc. The combined BeppoSAX and ASCA temperature profile exhibits a constant value out to a radius of 10' (650/h_50 kpc) and a significant decrease (T propto r^-0.55, corresponding to gamma=1.28) at larger radii. These temperature data are used to derive the total mass profile. The best fit NFW dark matter density model results in a temperature profile that is not convectively stable, but the model is acceptable within the uncertainties of the data. The temperature profile is acceptably modeled with a ``core'' model for the dark matter density, consisting of a core radius with a constant slope at larger radii. With this model the total mass and formal 90% confidence errors within the virial radius r_178 (2.5/h_50 Mpc) are 9.1+3.6-1.5 x 10^14 h_50^-1 M_Sun, by a factor of 1.4 smaller than the isothermal value. The gas mass fraction increases with radius, reaching f_gas(r_178) = 0.26+0.05-0.10 x h_50^-3/2. We constrain the total mass distribution in the cluster A3571, combining spatially resolved ASCA temperature data with ROSAT imaging data with the assumption that the cluster is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The total mass within r_500 (1.7/h_50 Mpc) is M_500 = 7.8[+1.4,-2.2] 10^14/ h_50 Msun at 90% confidence, 1.1 times smaller than the isothermal estimate. The Navarro, Frenk & White ``universal profile'' is a good description of the dark matter density distribution in A3571. The gas density profile is shallower than the dark matter profile, scaling as r^{-2.1} at large radii, leading to a monotonically increasing gas mass fraction with radius. Within r_500 the gas mass fraction reaches a value of f_gas = 0.19[+0.06,-0.03] h_50^{-3/2} (90% confidence errors). Assuming that this value of f_gas is a lower limit for the the universal value of the baryon fraction, we estimate the 90% confidence upper limit of the cosmological matter density to be Omega_m < 0.4., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

We calibrate the galaxy cluster mass - temperature relation using the temperature profiles of intracluster gas observed with ASCA (for hot clusters) and ROSAT (for cool groups). Our sample consists of apparently relaxed clusters for which the total masses are derived assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. The sample provides data on cluster X-ray emission-weighted cooling flow-corrected temperatures and total masses up to r_1000. The resulting M-T scaling in the 1-10 keV temperature range is M_1000 = (1.23 +- 0.20)/h_50 10^15 Msun (T/10 keV)^{1.79 +- 0.14} with 90% confidence errors, or significantly (99.99% confidence) steeper than the self-similar relation M propto T^{3/2}. For any given temperature, our measured mass values are significantly smaller compared to the simulation results of Evrard et al. (1996) that are frequently used for mass-temperature scaling. The higher-temperature subsample (kT > 4 keV) is consistent with M propto T^{3/2}, allowing the possibility that the self-similar scaling breaks down at low temperatures, perhaps due to heating by supernovae that is more important for low-temperature groups and galaxies as suggested by earlier works., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ

We combine spatially resolved ASCA temperature data with ROSAT imaging data to constrain the total mass distribution in the cluster A401, assuming that the cluster is in hydrostatic equilibrium. We obtain a total mass within the X-ray core (290/h_50 kpc) of 1.2[+0.1,-0.5] 10^14 /h_50 Msun at the 90% confidence level, 1.3 times larger than the isothermal estimate. The total mass within r_500 (1.7/h_50 Mpc) is M_500 = 0.9[+0.3,-0.2] 10^15/ h_50 Msun at 90% confidence, in agreement with the optical virial mass estimate, and 1.2 times smaller than the isothermal estimate. Our M_500 value is 1.7 times smaller than that estimated using the mass-temperature scaling law predicted by simulations. The best fit dark matter density profile scales as r^{-3.1} at large radii, which is consistent with the Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) ``universal profile'' as well as the King profile of the galaxy density in A401. From the imaging data, the gas density profile is shallower than the dark matter profile, scaling as r^{-2.1} at large radii, leading to a monotonically increasing gas mass fraction with radius. Within r_500 the gas mass fraction reaches a value of f_gas = 0.21[+0.06,-0.05] h_50^{-3/2} (90% confidence errors). Assuming that f_gas (plus an estimate of the stellar mass) is the universal value of the baryon fraction, we estimate the 90% confidence upper limit of the cosmological matter density to be Omega_m < 0.31., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ
