In the current investigation, the influence of the tool geometry, the position of the materials in the joint, the welding speed on the temperature and torque developed, and on the quality of the welds in dissimilar and tri-dissimilar T joints were analysed. The aluminium alloys used were AA2017-T4, AA6082-T6, and AA5083-H111 and the friction stir welds were performed with identical shoulder tools, but with either a pin with simple geometry or a pin with progressive geometry. Progressive pin tools proved to be a viable alternative in the production of dissimilar and tri-dissimilar welds, as they provide a larger tool/material friction area and a larger volume of dragged material, which promotes an increase in the heat generated and a good mixing of the materials in the stir zone, although they require a higher torque. Placing a stronger material on the advancing side also results in a higher temperature in the stir zone but requires higher torque too. The combination of these factors showed that tools with a progressive pin provide sound dissimilar and tri-dissimilar welds, unlike single-pin tools. The increase in the welding speed causes the formation of defects in the stir zone, even in tri-dissimilar welds carried out with a tool with a progressive pin, which impairs the fatigue strength of the welds.

The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of the properties of the base materials and welding speed on the morphology and mechanical behavior of the friction stir welds of three dissimilar aluminum alloys in a T-joint configuration. The base materials were the AA2017-T4, AA5083-H111, and AA6082-T6 alloys in 3 mm-thick sheets. The AA6082-T6 alloy was the stringer, and the other alloys were located either on the advancing or retreating sides of the skin. All the T-joint welds were produced with a constant tool rotation speed but with different welding speeds. The microstructures of the welds were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and the electron backscatter diffraction technique. The mechanical properties were assessed according to micro-hardness, tensile, and fatigue testing. Good quality welds of the three dissimilar aluminum alloys could be achieved with friction stir welding, but a high ratio between the tool’s rotational and traverse speeds was required. The welding speed influenced the weld morphology and fatigue strength. The positioning of the skin materials influenced the nugget morphology and the mechanical behavior of the joints. The joints in which the AA2017 alloy was positioned on the advancing side presented the best tensile properties and fatigue strength.

We report the mass production of uniformly sized droplets on a liter per hour scale using a large microchannel (MC) emulsification device developed in this study. This MC emulsification device includes a newly designed 40×40-mm silicon MC array chip with 24,772 asymmetric MCs, each consisting of a circular microhole (17-μm diameter and 200-μm depth) and a microslot (17×119-μm cross-section and 60-μm depth). The oil-in-water (O/W) system was composed of n-tetradecane as the dispersed phase and a Milli-Q water solution containing 2.0 wt% Tween-20 as the continuous phase. The MC emulsification results demonstrated the stable mass production of uniformly sized oil droplets with average diameters of 87 μm and coefficients of variation below 2% over a wide range of volumetric flow rates of the dispersed phase up to 1.4 l/h. Analyses of shear stress at the chip surface and droplet generation via an asymmetric MC verified that the resultant droplet size and size distribution was not influenced by the volumetric flow rate of each phase. The large MC emulsification device has a potential droplet productivity exceeding several tons per year, which could satisfy a minimum industrial-scale production of monodisperse microdispersions containing emulsion droplets, microparticles, and microcapsules.

Este estudo analisa a importância econômica da citricultura na balança comercial brasileira, no qüinqüênio 1996 -- 2000, bem como a movimentação econômico-financeira na cadeia citrícola ao longo de 1999. Mostra, através desta análise, a relevante participação do suco concentrado de laranja na balança comercial paulista, onde só recentemente perdeu o 1º lugar para aviões. Evidencia, ainda, a importância do suco concentrado entre os principais produtos brasileiros exportáveis, colocando a fruticultura nacional em destaque na pauta de exportação.

As principais causas de inflamação pancreática no mundo são a litíase biliar e o alcoolismo crônico. Admite-se que 10 a 30% das pancreatites agudas sejam idiopáticas. Sugere-se que parte destas são causadas por microlitíase ou barro biliar, identificados pela presença de microcristais no sedimento biliar. Neste estudo, realizou-se análise microscópica da bile obtida por colangiopancreatografia endoscópica, em pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática, pancreatite aguda biliar e pancreatite crônica alcoólica - 20 em cada grupo. Pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática e microcristais na bile foram submetidos a colecistectomia. Naqueles inaptos à cirurgia efetuou-se esfincterotomia endoscópica ou tratamento com ácido ursodesoxicólico. Pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática sem cristais não receberam tratamento específico. A prevalência de microcristais biliares em pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática (75%) e pancreatite aguda biliar (90%) foi significativamente maior que naqueles com pancreatite crônica alcoólica (15%). A detecção de microcristais apresentou sensibilidade de 90%, especificidade de 85%, valor preditivo positivo de 85,7%, valor preditivo negativo de 89,4% e acurácia de 87,5% em identificar pancreatite de origem biliar. Nos pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática recurrente, cursando com microcristais, houve redução significante dos episódios de pancreatite após tratamento específico. No seguimento deste grupo durante 23,3 meses, recidiva ocorreu apenas naqueles que apresentavam "fator biliar persistente" (coledocolitíase ou microcristais). Todos os pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática submetidos a colecistectomia apresentavam colecistite crônica, e microlitíase foi observada em um paciente. No seguimento ultra-sonográfico, colelitíase foi detectada em um dos casos. No subgrupo de cinco pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática sem microcristais houve uma recidiva. Estudo ultra-sonográfico durante o seguimento não revelou cálculo biliar em nenhum destes. Concluiu-se que a detecção de microcristais biliares na pancreatite aguda idiopática sugeriu etiologia biliar oculta subjacente. Adicionalmente, intervenção terapêutica específica nos pacientes com pancreatite aguda idiopática recurrente e microcristais reduziu as recidivas durante o seguimento. Finalmente, pancreatite aguda (particularmente, recurrente) não deveria ser rotulada como idiopática antes da análise microscópica da bile visando a detecção ou exclusão da presença de microcristais.

A Classificação Internacional de Doenças (CID) provê códigos para todas as doenças e permite que se façam comparações internacionais da morbidade e da mortalidade. Por ser ampla e de uso em locais com características bastante diversas, nem sempre é adequada. Existem revisões periódicas da CID para que esta seja atualizada e as novas doenças descritas sejam incluídas. Foi o que aconteceu com a AIDS, incorporada no capítulo de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias da décima revisão da CID. Por esse motivo, foi avaliado o uso dos códigos da CID-10 na codificação da AIDS. Foram utilizadas as fichas de vigilância epidemiológica de todos os casos diagnosticados em um hospital especializado em doenças infecciosas, em 1994. Verificou-se que nem sempre era possível codificar as fichas apenas com a utilização de um único código, proposto pela CID-10, para a AIDS e suas manifestações e complicações.

Abstract Background Competitions in text mining have been used to measure the performance of automatic text processing solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is time-consuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups are chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their text processing solutions. Results All four PPs from the CALBC project and in addition, 12 challenge participants (CPs) contributed annotated data sets for an evaluation against the SSC-I. CPs could ignore the training data and deliver the annotations from their genuine annotation system, or could train a machine-learning approach on the provided pre-annotated data. In general, the performances of the annotation solutions were lower for entities from the categories CHED and PRGE in comparison to the identification of entities categorized as DISO and SPE. The best performance over all semantic groups were achieved from two annotation solutions that have been trained on the SSC-I. The data sets from participants were used to generate the harmonised Silver Standard Corpus II (SSC-II), if the participant did not make use of the annotated data set from the SSC-I for training purposes. The performances of the participants’ solutions were again measured against the SSC-II. The performances of the annotation solutions showed again better results for DISO and SPE in comparison to CHED and PRGE. Conclusions The SSC-I delivers a large set of annotations (1,121,705) for a large number of documents (100,000 Medline abstracts). The annotations cover four different semantic groups and are sufficiently homogeneous to be reproduced with a trained classifier leading to an average F-measure of 85%. Benchmarking the annotation solutions against the SSC-II leads to better performance for the CPs’ annotation solutions in comparison to the SSC-I.

Abstract Background Gene/protein recognition and normalization are important preliminary steps for many biological text mining tasks, such as information retrieval, protein-protein interactions, and extraction of semantic information, among others. Despite dedication to these problems and effective solutions being reported, easily integrated tools to perform these tasks are not readily available. Results This study proposes a versatile and trainable Java library that implements gene/protein tagger and normalization steps based on machine learning approaches. The system has been trained for several model organisms and corpora but can be expanded to support new organisms and documents. Conclusions Moara is a flexible, trainable and open-source system that is not specifically orientated to any organism and therefore does not requires specific tuning in the algorithms or dictionaries utilized. Moara can be used as a stand-alone application or can be incorporated in the workflow of a more general text mining system.

Abstract Pancreas transplantation is an invasive procedure that can restore and maintain normoglycemic level very successfully and for a prolonged period in DM1 patients. The procedure elevates the morbimortality rates in the first few months following the surgery if compared to kidney transplants with living donors, but it offers a better quality of life to patients. Although controversial, several studies have shown the stabilization or the improvement of some of the chronic complications related to diabetes, as well as the extra number of years of life that patients submitted to a double pancreas-kidney transplantation may gain. Recent studies have demonstrated clashing outcomes regarding isolated pancreas transplantations, a fact which reinforces the need for a more discerning selection of patients for this procedure.

Abstract Background In recent times photodynamic antimicrobial therapy has been used to efficiently destroy Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria using cationic porphyrins as photosensitizers. There is an increasing interest in this approach, namely in the search of photosensitizers with adequate structural features for an efficient photoinactivation process. In this study we propose to compare the efficiency of seven cationic porphyrins differing in meso-substituent groups, charge number and charge distribution, on the photodynamic inactivation of a Gram (+) bacterium (Enterococcus faecalis) and of a Gram (-) bacterium (Escherichia coli). The present study complements our previous work on the search for photosensitizers that might be considered good candidates for the photoinactivation of a large spectrum of environmental microorganisms. Results Bacterial suspension (107 CFU mL-1) treated with different photosensitizers concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 μM) were exposed to white light (40 W m-2) for a total light dose of 64.8 J cm-2. The most effective photosensitizers against both bacterial strains were the Tri-Py+-Me-PF and Tri-Py+-Me-CO2Me at 5.0 μM with a light fluence of 64.8 J cm-2, leading to > 7.0 log (> 99,999%) of photoinactivation. The tetracationic porphyrin also proved to be a good photosensitizer against both bacterial strains. Both di-cationic and the monocationic porphyrins were the least effective ones. Conclusion The number of positive charges, the charge distribution in the porphyrins' structure and the meso-substituent groups seem to have different effects on the photoinactivation of both bacteria. As the Tri-Py+-Me-PF porphyrin provides the highest log reduction using lower light doses, this photosensitizer can efficiently photoinactivate a large spectrum of environmental bacteria. The complete inactivation of both bacterial strains with low light fluence (40 W m-2) means that the photodynamic approach can be applied to wastewater treatment under natural light conditions which makes this technology cheap and feasible in terms of the light source.

O trabalho estuda construções de orações hipotáticas temporais e construções de orações hipotáticas condicionais, com a finalidade de investigar o grau de gramaticalização que se verifica nesses dois tipos de enunciados. A hipótese é que quanto maior a integração da oração hipotática à nuclear, maior o grau de gramaticalização. Essa maior integração foi medida segundo três grupos de fatores, e os resultados mostraram que, em duas das variáveis avaliadas, as orações condicionais são as mais integradas a seu núcleo, mas, em outra ordem de avaliação, as orações temporais são as mais integradas. Dentro da base funcionalista em que o trabalho se move, esses resultados podem ser interpretados segundo o princípio da existência de competição de motivações no jogo da linguagem, entendendo-se que cada enunciado que se produz é o resultado do equilíbrio dessas pressões.

Leishmaniases comprise a group of infectious parasitic diseases caused by various species of Leishmania and are considered a significant public health problem worldwide. Only a few medications, including miltefosine, amphotericin B, and meglumine antimonate, are used in current therapy. These medications are associated with severe side effects, low efficacy, high cost, and the need for hospital support. Additionally, there have been occurrences of drug resistance. Additionally, only a limited number of drugs, such as meglumine antimonate, amphotericin B, and miltefosine, are available, all of which are associated with severe side effects. In this context, the need for new effective drugs with fewer adverse effects is evident. Therefore, this study investigated the anti-Leishmania activity of a dichloromethane fraction (DCMF) extracted from Arrabidaea brachypoda roots. This fraction inhibited the viability of L. infantum, L. braziliensis, and L. Mexicana promastigotes, with IC 50 values of 10.13, 11.44, and 11.16 µg/mL, respectively, and against L. infantum amastigotes (IC 50 = 4.81 µg/mL). Moreover, the DCMF exhibited moderate cytotoxicity (CC 50 = 25.15) towards RAW264.7 macrophages, with a selectivity index (SI) of 5.2. Notably, the DCMF caused damage to the macrophage genome only at 40 µg/mL, which is greater than the IC 50 found for all Leishmania species. The results suggest that DCMF demonstrates similar antileishmanial effectiveness to isolated brachydin B, without causing genotoxic effects on mammalian cells. This finding is crucial because the isolation of the compounds relies on several steps and is very costly while obtaining the DCMF fraction is a simple and cost-effective process. Furthermore, In addition, the potential mechanisms of action of brachydins were also investigated. The computational analysis indicates that brachydin compounds bind to the Triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) enzyme via two main mechanisms: destabilizing the interface between the homodimers and interacting with catalytic residues situated at the site of binding. Biosensing technologies are often described to provide facile, sensitive, and minimally to noninvasive detection of molecular analytes across diverse scientific, environmental, and clinical diagnostic disciplines. However, commercialization has been very limited mostly due to the difficulty of biosensor reconfiguration for different analyte(s) and limited high-throughput capabilities. The immobilization of different biomolecular probes (e.g., antibodies, peptides, and aptamers) requires the sensor surface chemistry to be tailored to provide optimal probe coupling, orientation, and passivation and prevent nonspecific interactions. To overcome these challenges, here we report the development of a solution-phase biosensor consisting of an engineered aptamer, the AptaShield, capable of universally binding to any antigen recognition site (Fab') of fluorescently labeled immunoglobulins (IgG) produced in rabbits. The resulting AptaShield biosensor relies on a low affinity dynamic equilibrium between the fluorescently tagged aptamer and IgG to generate a specific Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) signal. As the analyte binds to the IgG, the AptaShield DNA aptamer-IgG complex dissociates, leading to an analyte concentration-dependent decrease of the FRET signal. The biosensor demonstrates high selectivity, specificity, and reproducibility for analyte quantification in different biological fluids (e.g., urine and blood serum) in a one-step and low sample volume (0.5-6.25 μL) format. The AptaShield provides a universal signal transduction mechanism as it can be coupled to different rabbit antibodies without the need for aptamer modification, therefore representing a robust high-throughput solution-phase technology suitable for point-of-care applications, overcoming the current limitations of gold standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for molecular profiling.

Background: The heel is a complex anatomical region and is very often the source of pain complaints. The medial heel contains a number of structures, capable of compressing the main nerves of the region and knowing its anatomical topography is mandatory. The purpose of this work is to evaluate if tibial nerve (TN) and its main branches relate to the main anatomical landmarks of the ankle's medial side and if so, do they have a regular path after emerging from TN., Methods: The distal part of the legs, ankles and feet of 12 Thiel embalmed cadavers were dissected. The pattern of the branches of the TN was registered and the measurements were performed according to the Dellon-McKinnon malleolar-calcaneal line (DML) and the Heimkes Triangle (HT)., Results: The TN divided proximal to DML in 87.5%, on top of the DML in 12,5% and distal in none of the feet. The Baxter's nerve (BN) originated proximally in 50%, on top of the DML in 12,5% and distally in 37.5% of the cases. There was a strong and significant correlation between the length of DML and the distance from the center of the medial malleolus (MM) to the lateral plantar nerve (LPN), medial plantar (MPN) nerve, BN and Medial Calcaneal Nerve (MCN) (ρ: 0.910, 0.866, 0.970 and 0.762 respectively, p <  0.001)., Conclusions: In our sample the TN divides distal to DML in none of the cases. We also report a strong association between ankle size and the distribution of the MPN, LPN, BN and MCN. We hypothesize that location of these branches on the medial side of the ankle could be more predictable if we take into consideration the distance between the MM and the medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity., (© 2023. The surface activity of γ-oryzanol was evaluated by the pendant drop method (PDM), and its self-stabilizing properties were investigated by high-pressure homogenization (HPH) and solvent displacement method (SDM). Emulsions prepared by HPH were highly unstable due to the poor surface-active character of γ-oryzanol as identified by the PDM. In contrast, solid dispersions fabricated by SDM had comparable particle size to those prepared using Tween 80 (T80) as surfactant, and were stable up to 30 days of storage at 4 °C. The self-stabilizing properties of γ-oryzanol were attributed to the mechanism of spontaneous particle formation in SDM and to the ability of γ-oryzanol molecules to prevent particles aggregation by electrostatic repulsion. This study aimed to improve the visual aspects and chemical, techno-functional and rheological characteristics of Gryllus bimaculatus cricket powder through the use of different solvents, with the objective of using it as a protein source in food production. Four treatments (pH 5 aqueous solution, ethanol 20%, ethanol 99.5%, and hexane) were applied to the powder, and analyses were conducted to assess changes in the previously mentioned parameters. The results showed that the treatments led to an increase in protein concentration (from 55.4 to 72.5%) and a decrease in fat concentration (from 33.0 to 6.8%) in ethanol 99.5% treated powder, as well as a reduction in anti-nutritional compounds concentration, such as tannins (from 13.3 to 5.9 g/kg), in pH 5 treated powder, which is important for the nutritional value of the final product. The color of the powders was improved, being lighter after hexane and ethanol 99.5% treatments due to the removal of melanin with the defatting process. Flowability, water, and oil holding capacity were also improved in the defatted powders. All the results suggest that the main composition of the powder directly influences the analyzed parameters. These findings suggest that cricket powder treated with solvents can be used as a protein source in different food applications.

Background: The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is one of the most biodiverse terrestrial ecoregions of the world. Among its constituents, restinga vegetation makes a particular case, acting as a buffer zone between the oceans and the forest. Covering some 80% of Brazilian coastline (over 7,300 km in length), restinga is a harsh environment where plants and fungi interact in complex ways that just now are beginning to be unveiled. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, in particular, plays a so far ungauged and likely underestimated role. We recently described the morpho-anatomical and molecular features of the ectomycorrhizae formed by several basidiomycetous mycobionts on the host plant Guapira opposita , but the mycorrhizal biology of restinga is still largely unexplored. Here, we report new data on the ectomycorrhizal fungal symbionts of G. opposita , based on the collection of sporomata and ectomycorrhizal root tips in restinga stands occurring in southern Brazil. Methods: To obtain a broader view of restinga mycorrhizal and ecological potential, we compiled a comprehensive and up-to-date checklist of fungal species reported or supposed to establish ectomycorrhizae on restinga-inhabiting host plants, mainly on the basis of field observations. Results: Our list comprises some 726 records, 74 of which correspond to putative ectomycorrhizal taxa specifically associated with restinga. These include several members of Boletaceae , Amanita , Tomentella / Thelephora , Russula / Lactifluus , and Clavulina , as well as hypogeous fungi, like the recently described Longistriata flava . Conclusions: Our survey reveals a significant diversity of the restinga ectomycorrhizal mycobiota, indicating the importance of this symbiosis for the ecological functioning of a unique yet poorly known and threatened ecosystem., Competing Interests: No competing interests were disclosed., (Copyright: © 2023 N. Since the Fundão Dam rupture in Southeastern Brazil caused an enormous amount of iron ore tailing (IOT) to be discharged into the Doce River Catchment, various works have been published on the soil, water, and biota contamination by potentially hazardous trace metals. However, the objective of this study is to investigate changes in the main chemical composition and the mineral phases, which has not been studied yet. We present an analysis of sediment samples collected in the Doce River alluvial plain, before and after the disaster, as well as the tailing deposited. Granulometry, main chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, mineralogy by X-ray diffractometry, quantification of mineral phases using the Rietveld method, and scanning electron microscope imaging are shown. We conclude that the Fundão Dam rupture introduced fine particles into the Doce River alluvial plain, increasing the Fe and Al content in the sediments. The high Fe, Al, and Mn contents in the finer iron ore tailing fractions represent environmental risks for soil, water, and biotic chains. The IOT mineralogical components, mainly the muscovite, kaolinite, and hematite present in the finer particles can increase the sorption and desorption capacity of harmful trace metals depending on the natural or induced redox conditions, which are not always predictable and avoidable in the environment., (© 2023. The present study aimed to investigate the physical stability in terms of (droplet size, pH, and ionic strength) and chemical stability in terms of (retention) of D-limonene (LM) in the nanoemulsions after emulsification as well as after storing them for 30 days under different temperatures (5 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C). LM is a cyclic monoterpene and a major component extracted from citrus fruits. The modification of disperse phase with soybean oil (SB) and a nonionic emulsifier (Tween 80) was adequate to prepare stable LM-loaded nanoemulsions. LM blended with SB-loaded nanoemulsions were stable against droplet growth over pH (3-9) and ionic strength (0-500 mM NaCl). Regarding long-term storage, the prepared nanoemulsions demonstrated excellent physical stability with droplet size ranging from 120-130 nm during 30 days of storage at both 5 °C and 25 °C; however, oiling off started in the emulsions, which were stored at 50 °C from day 10. On the other hand, the retention of LM in the emulsions was significantly impacted by storage temperature. Nanoemulsions stored at 5 °C had the highest retention of 91%, while nanoemulsions stored at 25 °C had the lowest retention of 82%.

In this study, we evaluated the caprylic acid-based oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion-assisted extraction of lycopene from tomatoes. Emulsion-assisted extraction was performed using two types of micron-sized O/W emulsions: (a) O/W emulsion with absence or (b) presence of 0.1% (w/w) of Tween 20 emulsifier. This green extraction technique was compared with the conventional method using soybean oil, tributyrin, and caprylic acid. The results show that caprylic acid, a green solvent, is significantly more effective for lycopene recovery than soybean oil and tributyrin. In the absence of an emulsifier, caprylic acid-based O/W emulsion significantly improved the lycopene content by 14.69 mg/g, corresponding to a 98.59% extraction efficiency at 50 ˚C. The capability of the proposed approach to lycopene recovery was explained in terms of lycopene affinity, the ability to swell the tomato cell, and some other standard parameters. The biogeography of neotropical fungi remains poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct the origins and diversification of neotropical lineages in one of the largest clades of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the globally widespread family Russulaceae. We inferred a supertree of 3285 operational taxonomic units, representing worldwide internal transcribed spacer sequences. We reconstructed biogeographic history and diversification and identified lineages in the Neotropics and adjacent Patagonia. The ectomycorrhizal Russulaceae have a tropical African origin. The oldest lineages in tropical South America, most with African sister groups, date to the mid-Eocene, possibly coinciding with a boreotropical migration corridor. There were several transatlantic dispersal events from Africa more recently. Andean and Central American lineages mostly have north-temperate origins and are associated with North Andean uplift and the general north-south biotic interchange across the Panama isthmus, respectively. Patagonian lineages have Australasian affinities. Diversification rates in tropical South America and other tropical areas are lower than in temperate areas. Neotropical Russulaceae have multiple biogeographic origins since the mid-Eocene involving dispersal and co-migration. Discontinuous distributions of host plants may explain low diversification rates of tropical lowland ectomycorrhizal fungi. The plastic waste problem has recently attracted unprecedented attention globally. To reduce the adverse eff ects on environments, biodegradable polymers have been studied to solve the problems. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is one of the common biodegradable plastics used on its own or blended with natural polymers because of its excellent properties after blending. However, PCL and natural polymers are difficult to blend due to the polymers' properties. Grafted polymerization of maleic anhydride and dibenzoyl peroxide (DBPO) with PCL is one of the improvements used for blending immiscible polymers. In this study, we first focused on the effects of three factors (stirring time, maleic anhydride (MA) amount and benzoyl peroxide amount) on the grafting ratio with a maximum value of 4.16% when applying 3.000 g MA and 1.120 g DBPO to 3.375 g PCL with a stirring time of 18 h. After that, the grafting condition was studied based on the kinetic thermal decomposition and activation energy by the Coats-Redfern method. The optimal fitting model was confirmed by the determination coefficient of nearly 1 to explain the contracting volume mechanism of synthesized PCL-g-MA. Consequently, grafted MA hydrophilically augmented PCL as the reduced contact angle of water suggests, facilitating the creation of a plastic-biomaterial composite.

Although natural emulsifiers often have many drawbacks when used alone, their emulsifying ability and stability can usually be improved unexpectedly when used in combination. In this study, monodisperse emulsions stabilized by combining two natural protein emulsifiers, i.e., whey protein isolate (WPI) and sodium caseinate (SC), in different proportions were prepared using microchannel (MC) emulsification. The influences of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and storage time on the microstructure and stability of the emulsions were examined. Analysis of the microstructure and droplet size distribution revealed that the WPI-, SC-, and mixed protein-stabilized emulsions exhibited uniform droplet distribution. The droplet size and ξ-potential of the MC emulsions stabilized by mixed protein emulsifiers were higher than those of the emulsions stabilized by WPI or SC separately. The emulsions stabilized by the two types of proteins and mixed emulsifiers had better stability under high salt concentrations than the synthetic emulsifier Tween 20. WPI-SC-stabilized emulsions were more resistant to high temperatures (70-90°C) and exhibited excellent stabilization than those stabilized by WPI and SC, which was attributed to the more sufficient coverage provided by the two types of protein emulsifier layers and better protein adsorption at the oil-water interface. These results indicate that WPI-SC is a potential stabilizer for MC emulsion requirements. Objective: To develop a scientific consensus on nutrition in cystic fibrosis., Methods: Sixteen coordinators elaborated relevant questions on nutritional therapy in cystic fibrosis, which were divided into six sections: nutritional assessment, nutritional recommendations, nutritional intervention, dietary counseling, special situations and enzyme replacement, and gastrointestinal manifestations. Two to three specialists in the field were responsible for each section and obtaining answers formulated based on standardized bibliographic searches. The available literature was searched in the PubMed®/MEDLINE database, after training and standardization of search strategies, to write the best level of evidence for the questions elaborated. Issues related to disagreement were discussed until a consensus was reached among specialists, based on the current scientific literature., Results: Forty-two questions were prepared and objectively answered, resulting in a consensus of nutritional therapy in cystic fibrosis., Conclusion: This work enabled establishing a scientific consensus for nutritional treatment of cystic fibrosis patients.

In this work, we characterize naturally occurring mycorrhizae formed by Amanita viscidolutea on Guapira opposita in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. We sequenced the rDNA ITS region from the mycorrhizae and basidiomata to identify both symbionts. Amanita viscidolutea mycorrhizae were up to 43 mm long, mostly simple, and unbranched to irregularly pinnate. The fungal mantle surface was velvety to slightly cottony and white to yellowish with silver patches. Hyphal strands were infrequently present. Although the fungal mantle consisted of clampless hyphae, emanating hyphae and hyphal strands had sparsely distributed clamp connections. Alpha-terpineol (α-TOH) is a promising monoterpenoid detaining several biological activities. However, as a volatile molecule, the incorporation of α-TOH within formulated products poses several challenges related to its stability. In this sense, nanoencapsulation works as a key technology to protect the bioactivity of low molecular weight oils, like α-TOH, against environmental stresses (heat, light, and moisture), mitigating their susceptibility to degradation (oxidation and volatilization). Physical properties of encapsulated flavor/essential oil have been extensively reported, whereas there is a lack in the literature regarding their chemical stability, which is usually the main purpose of encapsulation. Thus, in this study, the physicochemical stability of the formulated oil-in-water nanoemulsion loaded with α-TOH stabilized with Quillaja saponins (QSs) as a natural emulsifier (α-TOH-QSs-NE) were tracked in a long-term (up to 280th day). Along with time, mean droplet diameter (MDD) and turbidity were used as a reference for physical parameters; while the chemical stability was monitored using gas chromatography analysis to quantify the mark content of α-TOH into the NE. Results indicated that α-TOH-QSs-NE was successfully formulated with a high-load amount of α-TOH (90 mg mL -1 ). α-TOH-QSs-NE showed great physicochemical stability regardless the storage-temperature (5 °C or 25 °C) up to 280th day, with no significant alterations in the MDD or turbidity, where c.a. 79% of the initial amount of the nanoemulsified α-TOH remained detectable in α-TOH-QSs-NEs, with no finding of degradation products. Nanoencapsulation is an attractive technique used for incorporating essential oils in foods. Thus, our main goal was to formulate a novel nanoemulsion (NE) with nanoscale droplet size and lowest interfacial tension in the oil-water interface, contributing positively to the stability and the enhancement of essential oil potential. Thereby, response surface methodology (RSM), with mixture design was used to optimize the composition of the NE lipid phase. The essential oil combinations were encapsulated through high-pressure homogenization (HPH) with the binary emulsifier system (Tween 80: Gum Arabic). Then, the electrophoretic and physical properties were evaluated. We also conducted a follow-up stability and antimicrobial study that examined the stabilization mechanism of optimal NE. Thereafter, the effect of nanoencapsulation on the essential oil composition was assessed. The RSM results were best fitted into polynomial models with regression coefficient values of more than 0.95. The optimal NE showed a nanometer-sized droplet (270 nm) and lower interfacial tension (~11 mN/m), favoring negative ζ-potential (-15 mV), showing good stability under different conditions-it synergistically enhances the antimicrobial potential. GC-MS analysis showed that the use of HPH affected the active compounds, consistent with the differences in linalool and 2-Caren-10-al content. Hence, the novel nanometric delivery system contributes to food industry fortification.

The Brazilian Nutritional Consensus in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Children and Adolescents was developed by dietitians, physicians, and pediatric hematologists from 10 Brazilian reference centers in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The aim was to emphasize the importance of nutritional status and body composition during treatment, as well as the main characteristics related to patient´s nutritional assessment. This consensus is intended to improve and standardize nutrition therapy during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The consensus was approved by the Brazilian Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation.

In this study, the interfacial ability of α-terpineol (α-TOH) was reported, followed by its trapping into oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsion as active-ingredient and the long-term observation of this nanosystem influenced by the storage-time (410-days) and temperature (5, 25, 50 °C). The results indicated that the α-TOH can reduce the interfacial tension on the liquid-liquid interface (ΔG° m  = -1.81 KJ mol -1 ; surface density = 8.19 × 10 -6  mol m -2 ; polar head group area = 20.29 Å 2 ), in the absence or presence of surfactant. The O/W nanoemulsion loaded with a high amount of α-TOH (90 mg mL -1 ; 9α-TOH-NE) into the oil phase was successfully formulated. Among the physical parameters, the mean droplet diameter (MDD) showed a great thermal dependence influenced by the storage-temperature, where the Ostwald ripening (OR) was identified as the main destabilizing phenomena that was taking place on 9α-TOH-NE at 5 and 25 °C along with time. Despite of the physical instability, the integrity of both nanoemulsion at 5 °C and 25 °C was fully preserved up to 410th day, displaying a homogeneous and comparable appearance by visual observation. On contrary, a non-thermal dependence was found for chemical stability, where over 88% of the initial amount of the α-TOH nanoemulsified remained in both 9α-TOH-NE at 5 and 25 °C, up to 410th day. This research studies the application of a specific nanoemulsion as anti-Escherichia coli agent. The specific mixture was generated by a simplex-centroid design. Physicochemical parameters such as droplet average diameter, pH, viscosity, density, turbidity, whitening index, refractive index, stability (thermal, physical, and osmotic stability), and antibacterial activity kinetic, have been assessed. The mixture nanoemulsions had droplet diameters significantly smaller than those of clove or cinnamon nanoemulsions. Individual and mixture essential oils nanoemulsion exhibited appropriate stability under pH, thermal, and ionic stress as well as after mid-term storage. Antibacterial activity kinetic revealed the fast and pronounced efficacy of mixture nanoemulsions on E. coli (reach 98% of growth inhibition), especially for the nanoemulsion composed of 50% essential oil in the dispersed phase upon 20 days of storage. Foodborne diseases are a huge problem that causes dramatic economic losses and threatens consumers' lives. Chitosan-based film incorporated with essential oil nanoemulsion would be an ideal solution to build smart food packaging. Thyme oil was formulated into nanoemulsion and checked for the droplet size, distribution, and physical stability. The prepared thyme oil nanoemulsion was incorporated with the chitosan-filmogenic mixture through continuous mixing. The filmogenic mixture was cast, dried, and assessed for their morphological, physical, mechanical, and molecular properties. In addition to investigating the antimicrobial activity against gram-negative ( Escherichia coli spp.) and gram-positive ( Bacillus subtilis spp.) bacteria. Thyme oil nanoemulsion showed a small droplet size (89-90 nm) with considerable stability. Incorporating thyme oil nanoemulsion with the chitosan-based film did not cause great change in the film appearance and transparency, while enhanced the light barrier property. It caused noticeable changes to the film physical (ex., moisture content, water vapor permeability, among others) and mechanical (Tensile strength and elongation at break) properties. On the other hand, it improved the film thermal stability without causing a structural alteration in the film matrix. Incorporation of chitosan-based film with thyme nanoemulsion remarkably improved the antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens. This study compared the interfacial and emulsifying properties of purified saponins and non-purified saponin-rich extracts of Glycyrrhiza glabra, and highlighted potential mechanisms by which crude surface-active compositions, such as liquorice root extract (LRE), act as emulsifiers. LRE presented different fluid properties, in comparison to purified glycyrrhizin (PG), at equivalent glycyrrhizin concentrations. Particularly, it exhibited limited glycyrrhizin fibrilization at pH < pKa and efficiently reduced the interfacial tension at the soybean oil/water interface, independently of pH. LRE also presented better emulsification properties, in comparison to PG samples. The collapse of the Fundão Dam, in Southeastern Brazil, caused about 50 million m³ of iron ore tailings to sluice down the mountain to Rio Doce, in what is considered the greatest environmental disaster in Brazilian history. The fluvial system received an intense and sudden mudflow that was transported for more than 650 km, before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Because the area was already impacted by the mineral activities in the region, it becomes essential to evaluate the environmental conditions before the disaster to correctly assess the disaster real damage. This study compares the concentration of trace metals in the sediments of the Rio Doce alluvial plain, before and after the dam collapse, as well as the newly deposited iron ore tailings that became part of the sedimentary framework. The data indicate that the fine particles deposited have since been incorporated into the sandy river sediments. The cadmium and arsenic contents in the sediments increased to levels above the National Environment Council thresholds. The comparison between the levels of trace metals in the situations before and after disaster shows that the mining mud is the source of cadmium while the arsenic was present before the environmental disaster, and its concentration increased due to sediment remobilization. Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) from Argan (Argania spinosa) shells was prepared by chemical purification of cellulose, then mechanical disintegration via high pressure homogenization was performed to isolate fibrils of cellulose. Chemical characterization of raw argan shell (AS-R), purified cellulose (AS-C), and argan shell MFC (AS-MFC) included FT-IR, XRD and NMR. Morphological characterization of AS-MFC was assessed using TEM. Next, the use of AS-MFC as oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilizer was investigated. The particle concentration was observed to affect the long-term stability of the emulsions; high concentrations (0.5-1 % w/w) of AS-MFC resulted in emulsions that were thermodynamically stable during 15 days of storage, which was demonstrated by the droplet's size evolution. The suitable oil concentration for a maximum volume of emulsion using 1 % w/w AS-MFC was demonstrated. The results show that AS-MFC is able to stabilize 70 % w/w MCT oil without visual phase separation. Finally, CLSM shows the adsorption of AS-MFC at the oil-water interface and the formation of a 3D network surrounding oil droplets, confirming Pickering emulsion formation and stabilization., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, the effect of spraying method as an application technique for xanthan gum-based edible coatings was investigated, based on its barrier and microbial properties on fresh-cut lotus root. Xanthan gum solutions (0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%) were prepared and incorporated with 2% (w/w) citric acid as an anti-browning agent and 1% (w/w) glycerol as plasticizer. The coatings were then sprayed using a pilot spray system to 5 mm-thick slices of fresh-cut lotus root for 20 s, packed in polyethylene bags, stored for 16 d at 5 °C and analyzed for color, pH, morphology and microbial counts. It was found that spray-coated fresh-cut lotus root samples had significant reduction in the total color changes as compared to non-coated samples. The experimental results suggested that the spray coating treatments were effective in decreasing the enzymatic browning of fresh-cut lotus root during storage which could potentially increase its shelf-life in the market. In addition, we have also found that the xanthan gum-based spray coated treatments were also effective against inhibiting the growth of Bacillus subtilis during 24 h of incubation which were indicated by the lower microbial counts recorded as compared to non-coated fresh-cut lotus root samples. In this part of the work, the author highlighted the spray coating technique of xanthan gum-based edible coatings as a promising strategy in improving the storage stability of fresh-cut lotus root during post-harvest storage. Overall, the application of edible coatings is a promising strategy in extending the shelf life of fresh-cut lotus root. Introduction: This study investigated the association between preserved lower-limb muscle strength, dynamic and static postural stability, risk of falling, and fear of falling in polio survivors. We also investigated whether these clinical features differ between polio survivors and healthy controls. Methods: This quasi-experimental study enrolled 16 polio survivors (13 underwent a complete-case analysis) and 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Participants were assessed by the manual muscle test, Berg Balance Scale, force platform posturography, and Falls Efficacy Scale. Between-group mean differences with confidence intervals (MD, CI 95%) and Spearman's ρ are reported. Results: Compared to healthy controls, polio survivors presented reduced muscle strength (MD = -13, CI 95% -16 to -9 points), lower dynamic postural stability (MD = -14, CI 95% -19 to -8 points), and increased fear of falling (MD = 14, CI 95% 10-18 points) (all P  < 0.001). In polio survivors, lower-limb muscle strength was correlated with dynamic ( ρ  = 0.760) and static postural stability ( ρ  = 0.738-0.351), risk of falling ( ρ  = -0.746), and fear of falling ( ρ  = -0.432). Dynamic postural stability was correlated with risk of falling ( ρ  = -0.841), fear of falling ( ρ  = -0.277), and static postural stability ( ρ  = -0.869 to -0.435; ρ  = -0.361 to -0.200, respectively). Risk and fear of falling were also correlated ( ρ  = 0.464). Discussion: Polio survivors exhibited impaired dynamic postural stability but preserved static stability and increased risk of falling and fear of falling. Preserved lower-limb muscle strength, postural stability, fear of falling, and risk of falling are associated clinical features in this population.

Background: A recent survey reported a high risk of drowning in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. This study intended to assess PD patients' swimming ability and explore the disease-related characteristics that may affect this., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in idiopathic PD patients. The assessment included swimming in 2 different styles and the evaluation of isolated technical gestures. The primary outcome was the frequency of patients who were able to swim. Limb coordination, blockage episodes, and capacity to maintain the body in a horizontal position were also evaluated., Results: Thirteen patients were evaluated. Three patients were able to swim according to the predefined definition. The inability to maintain the horizontal position and floatability were the main reasons identified for the decrease in swimming performance., Conclusions: Swimming ability is compromised in some PD patients. Pterulaceae was formally proposed to group six coralloid and dimitic genera: Actiniceps (= Dimorphocystis) , Allantula , Deflexula , Parapterulicium , Pterula, and Pterulicium . Recent molecular studies have shown that some of the characters currently used in Pterulaceae do not distinguish the genera. Actiniceps and Parapterulicium have been removed, and a few other resupinate genera were added to the family. However, none of these studies intended to investigate the relationship between Pterulaceae genera. In this study, we generated 278 sequences from both newly collected and fungarium samples. Phylogenetic analyses supported with morphological data allowed a reclassification of Pterulaceae where we propose the introduction of Myrmecopterula gen. nov. and Radulomycetaceae fam. nov., the reintroduction of Phaeopterula , the synonymisation of Deflexula in Pterulicium, and 53 new combinations. Pterula is rendered polyphyletic requiring a reclassification; thus, it is split into Pterula , Myrmecopterula gen. nov., Pterulicium and Phaeopterula . Deflexula is recovered as paraphyletic alongside several Pterula species and Pterulicium, and is sunk into the latter genus. Phaeopterula is reintroduced to accommodate species with darker basidiomes. The neotropical Myrmecopterula gen. nov. forms a distinct clade adjacent to Pterula , and most members of this clade are associated with active or inactive attine ant nests. The resupinate genera Coronicium and Merulicium are recovered in a strongly supported clade close to Pterulicium . The other resupinate genera previously included in Pterulaceae , and which form basidiomes lacking cystidia and with monomitic hyphal structure ( Radulomyces , Radulotubus and Aphanobasidium ), are reclassified into Radulomycetaceae fam. nov. Allantula is still an enigmatic piece in this puzzle known only from the type specimen that requires molecular investigation. The effect of natural emulsifiers (whey protein isolate, WPI; modified lecithin, ML; and gum arabic, GA) on the formulation, stability, and bioaccessibility of fucoxanthin-loaded oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions was determined in this study. The fine emulsions were prepared under high-pressure homogenization at 100 MPa for 4 passes, using 2 wt % WPI, ML, and GA, resulting in emulsions with the droplet sizes of 136, 140, and 897 nm, respectively. The chemical stability of fucoxanthin in the emulsions after long-term storage at ambient temperature decreased in the following order: WPI > GA > ML. The release of free fatty acids of fucoxanthin, studied by in vitro digestion, decreased in the following order: WPI > ML > GA > bulk oil. The bioaccessibility of fucoxanthin in emulsions stabilized by WPI, ML, and GA after in vitro digestion were 92.5 ± 6.8%, 44.6 ± 0.4, and 36.8 ± 2.5, respectively. These results indicate that natural emulsifier type and concentration used significantly affects the formulation, stability, lipid digestion, and fucoxanthin bioaccessibility, which may be ascribed to the different properties of each emulsifier. Apigenin has attracted a great interest in the food industry due to the wide range of its biological activities including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. The encapsulation of apigenin in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions could overcome its low solubility and lead to the development of new functional food products. The aim of this study is to formulate food-grade O/W submicron emulsions loaded with apigenin using high-pressure homogenization. Supersaturated solutions of 0.1 wt% apigenin in ethyl oleate were heated at 100 °C for 30, 60, or 120 min and the supernant after centrifugation were used as to-be-dispersed phases. An aqueous solution containing 1 wt% tween 20 was used as the continuous phase. We examined the effect of heating process of the ethyl oleate prior to emulsification and the homogenization-pressure (60-150 MPa) on the physico-chemical characteristics of the O/W emulsions immediately after formulation and during storage. Submicron O/W emulsions were formulated and the lowest average droplet diameter (d av ) was 169 ± 2.082 nm with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.06 ± 0.002. After 30 days of storage at 4 °C, the O/W emulsion formulated remained physically stable with little change in their d av and PDI values. The preheat treatment of ethyl oleate, affected the initial loaded apigenin concentration but hardly affected the physico-chemical stability of O/W emulsions. However, HPLC analysis demonstrated that the emulsification pressure was a relevant parameter affecting apigenin retention during the storage of O/W emulsions. Apigenin degradation in ethyl oleate O/W emulsions followed zero order kinetics and about 91.5-93.5% of apigenin could be retained in O/W emulsions after 30 days of storage., (Copyright © 2018. The formulation, physicochemical stability and bioaccessibility of astaxanthin (AST) loaded oil-in-water nanoemulsions fabricated using gypenosides (GPs) as natural emulsifiers was investigated and compared with a synthetic emulsifier (Tween 20) that is commonly applied in food industry. GPs were capable of producing nanoemulsions with a small volume mean diameter (d 4,3  = 125 ± 2 nm), which was similar to those prepared using Tween 20 (d 4,3  = 145 ± 6 nm) under the same high-pressure homogenization conditions. GPs-stabilized nanoemulsions were stable against droplet growth over a range of pH (6-8) and thermal treatments (60-120 °C). Conversely, instability occurred under acidic (pH 3-5) and high ionic strength (25-100 mM CaCl 2 ) conditions. In comparison with Tween 20, GPs were more effective at inhibiting AST from degradation during 30 days of storage at both 5 and 25 °C. The genus Parapterulicium was first introduced to accommodate two Brazilian species of coralloid fungi with affinities to Pterulaceae (Agaricales). Despite the coralloid habit and the presence of skeletal hyphae, other features, notably the presence of gloeocystidia, dichophyses and papillate hyphal ends, differentiate this genus from Pterulaceae sensu stricto. Fieldwork in Brazil resulted in the rediscovery of two coralloid fungi identifiable as Parapterulicium , the first verified collections of this genus since Corner's original work in the 1950s. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nrITS and nrLSU sequences from these modern specimens revealed affinities with the /peniophorales clade in the Russulales, rather than Pterulaceae. The presence of distinctive hyphal elements, homologous to the defining features of /peniophorales, is consistent with the phylogenetic evidence and thus clearly distinguished Parapterulicium and its type species P.subarbusculum from Pterulaceae, placing this genus within /peniophorales. Parapterulicium was also found to be polyphyletic so Baltazaria gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate P.octopodites , Scytinostromagalactinum , S.neogalactinum and S.eurasiaticogalactinum also within /peniophorales.

In this study ginseng saponins (GS) were used as natural emulsifiers to formulate and stabilize O/W nanoemulsions loaded with astaxanthin (AST). GS were found to be highly effective at reducing the interfacial tension at the soybean oil-water interfaces, and were capable of producing nano-scaled droplets (d 4,3  ≈ 125 nm) using a high-pressure homogenizer. The droplet size of the nanoemulsions decreased with increasing emulsifier concentration and homogenization pressure. The nanoemulsions were stable without droplet coalescence against thermal treatment (30-90 °C, 30 min), and over a narrow range of pH values (7-9). GS-coated droplets were unstable in acidic conditions (pH 3-6) and in the presence of salt (>25 mM NaCl). The formulated nanoemulsions showed slight change in d 4,3 during 15 days of storage at 5, 25 and 40 °C. Betanin is the main pigment of the food color beetroot red (E162). Due to the fair heat and light stability of E162, this pigment is mainly used in minimally processed packaged food products. Encapsulation increases the stability of betanin, but detailing on the effect of different sources of betanin on the properties and stability of multiple emulsions are scarce. Here we describe the encapsulation of E162, spray-dried beetroot juice and betanin in a monodisperse food-grade water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions by using microchannel emulsification. We compare the tinctorial strength of the encapsulated pigments and investigate the effect of temperature, storage period and pigment concentration on emulsion stability and color. Betanin increases the overall stability of the W/O/W emulsion, reduce the oil droplet size and improve size distribution when compared to the negative control without pigment and to emulsions containing betanin from other sources., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11 th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN.
