Several species of mammals in Connecticut (CT) including bobcats (Lynx rufus), coyotes (Canis latrans), and fishers (Pekania [=Martes] pennanti) have experienced drastic changes in distribution over the last few centuries caused by anthropogenic landscape changes and exploitation. Since the mid-1980's, populations of these three predators have been increasing and expanding locally, and could potentially have negative impacts on each other and on prey species whose populations are likewise recovering, including the New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis). I used automatically-triggered camera surveys to collect detection data on lagomorphs and their primary mammalian predators in early successional habitat. Covariate data collected in the field and from GIS was combined with detection data in single and multi-species models to estimate carnivore detectability (p) and occupancy ([psi]) probabilities. Combined occupancy in early successional habitat for all predators was 86%. Estimated site occupancy was greater than 55% for bobcats and coyotes, 34% for Mustela species, and less than 20% for red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and fishers. Site occupancy of coyotes did not appear to be influenced by the selected covariates. Local road densities had a positive effect on red fox [psi] and a negative effect on bobcat [psi], additionally early successional vegetation in western CT was more likely to be occupied by bobcats than eastern CT. Fisher [psi] may be influenced by the amount of early successional vegetation nearby and site proximity to water. Other carnivores were detected too infrequently to determine any relationships. The only species interaction found was that the probability of detecting bobcats increased when lagomorph activity was high during the sampling period. Occupancy estimation in this study has shown that the local carnivore community in CT differs geographically and based on local variables (e.g. road density), which could, in turn, influence local predation pressures on prey species like New England cottontails.

The eighteenth century is often considered the most important era in the history of childhood. Old Puritan conceptions of original sin and physical punishment gave way to Enlightenment concepts of childhood innocence and rationality. Jonathan Edwards was a central figure who stood in the midst of this intellectual change. Situated quite literally in the middle of the transitioning eighteenth century, Edwards’ attempted to bridge the gap between Puritan conceptions of childhood and new ideas made popular by John Locke. Sometimes the bridge held firmly, and other times it cracked widely. Edwards’ theological and philosophical understanding of childhood was at the heart of both his preaching and writing. An examination of Edwards’ rhetoric to children reveals a great deal about how he attempted to reconcile these two different ideologies. His ability to reason with children and redirect their wills to God was unique for his time. While Edwards’ view of childhood is far from modern, the ideas that he expressed had a large impact on American childhood conceptions throughout the following centuries and into today.

Sharks are important predators in marine ecosystems. In the past few decades, there has been a documented loss in abundance of sharks across the globe. Although the trends are clear, there has been no study of shark population decline specifically in New England. The goal of this project was to explore the historical abundances of sharks in New England from 1820-1930 and the historical context of sharks during that time period. I used historical documents concerning fisheries to catalog the number of references containing incidental sightings and captures of sharks. I coded historical anecdotes about sharks to determine changes in relative abundances sharks during the period from 1820- 1930. Ten species of large sharks were present in New England from 1820-1930. The abundances and distribution of sightings varied throughout New England, with the highest sighting abundance and in Massachusetts. From 1882-1924, there appeared to be a slight decline in the relative abundance of large sharks in New England. Further studies could be done to increase the amount of data describing historical shark abundances in New England.
